The best thing that could happen for Brink is releasing a demo. There's nothing like forming your own opinion on a game. But I would really like to know what Ludwig thinks. He's the one Joystiq staff member I tend to agree with the most.

I just tried playing this game for 3 hours and it was 2 hours and 59 minutes more than I needed to be completely baffled and horrified by this mess of a game. I even went with the PC version assuming it would be the safest best, but it seems incompetency is platform agnostic regardless of the developer; this game is an abject disaster. The movement is clunky and finicky, the new inappropriately SMART system doesn't really add anything to the experience, and if you're a heavy you can't even use it. The bot AI is by far an away the worst I've ever seen, which isn't to say it's the worst ever but from what I've played this is beyond the pale horrible AI. The controls are needlessly convoluted with too many radial menus. The challenges are bland, there's only eight maps and some of them have cut scenes in the middle of gameplay because I guess that part was just so important. It looks like hell, even on maxed settings only the characters look good, and it's terribly unoptimized, it runs even worse than it looks. There are loads of little bugs, the audio can cut out partially or entirely. Even the simple act of trying to find a server is agony because of some bug that reduces my FPS to the single digits whenever I search for one. I am so blasted angry I fell for this unfinished crap. I'm never buying a Splash Damage game again.

McElroy is commenting on balance aspects of the MP part of this game. To be able to judge these accurately even 6-12 hours wouldn't be enough. The balance of MP games is delicate and every single on of them needs several readjustments over the lifetime of the game. The criticisms that McElroy seems to be able to deduce from his short playtime make it pretty obvious that this is can't be a thorough review of the MP aspect of the game.

I am not stating that Brink is not a bad game, mind you (I don't actually know). What I am stating is that McElroy seems not to be in a position to make this call after such a short time actually playing the game.

@Mandor
And to add on this; don't forget that Splash Damage has a great system on working out balancing issues in Brink. The problems you might have today might not be a problem tomorrow.

Me 30 minutes ago after watching 15 minutes of Gameplay: "Looks cool, I'm so gonna buy this!"
Me after reading this and reconsidering what I saw: "Dammit, I don't want this anymore, they're right, it's so totally 2/5..."
Usually a review wouldn't change my liking of gameplay, however, this said specifically what they didn't like, and I was able to go back to the gameplay and see it, so now I don't want it, because gameplay is what sells me, and if I want stalemates like this one seems to enforce, I'd just go play some 2fort on TF2, which I already have.

I'm interested in how everyone is basing their slander of the reviewer based on his PERSONAL account's gameplay time. They've probably played this for hours and hours with preview builds, beginning to end. The only thing they needed to see with the retail build is to see what was fixed for release and whether any real changes were made.

Thus the point he makes about potential, they probably thought the preview builds showed potential, but they didn't polish or work on it enough for the final release.

And Most press members have "press accounts" on XBL so that they don't break NDA etc.

Why push live a review about a shooter designed mostly for online multiplayer without first putting in significant time actually playing the online multiplayer component?

The game's great. What baffles me is how it could get such a low review and manage to leave a bad taste in People's mouths before they even play it and see for themselves.

Bought it, played it, absolutely HATE IT. It was honestly generous to give this game the two stars it got in all honesty.

I'd argue that the game is strictly a multiplayer game by how it plays in the campaign and solo missions, but then we have to take into account the fail things like lack of a K/D and the awful camera movement. The game is glitchy at best as well when surrounding around things like game options, etc.

I give it two thumbs down and a sad face to boot (or maybe an angryface). Playing this game makes me feel like the creators were out to do one thing, make your gaming life miserable throughout the storyline. I honestly, won't even bother hooking up Xbox live and trying it there, it's not worth it. Between poor everything, it's a waste of money, to be frank, I honestly wish I could get a refund. I ain't trollin, I'm just sayin.

Brink is not perfect. But in my opinion it's a lot of fun. Once you get used to the fact that it doesn't play like Call of Duty or Bad Co. you realize how much fun you can have doing something different! And, yes, the AI can be a little wonky..but this is meant to be played with humans online. Bottom line Brink deserves a solid 3.5/5, 7/10, 70/100, however you do your reviewing. To give it 2/5 seems rather low considering I've played games that were absolutely horrible that got 2/5. This game may not be perfect, but it is FAR from absolutely horrible.

I see a lot of critique has been erased. Not for language reasons but for being overly critical of Griffins review.

Anyway, if you have a read at European sites, AI is being described as good. Griffins review seems all wrong to me in several ways (for whatever reason) and I do not trust it. Joystick has published the worst scoring review of all sites listed at Metacritic. Sure thing, someone has gotta be lowest, but it adds up in the end.

Rented Brink last night and played through a couple campaign missions with 3 friends, and completed all of the 2 star challenges [and the Agility 3 star]. So far?

I like it. a lot.

the friendly AI pisses me off, but when you get a group of your friends with you [albeit that process is slightly annoying; i'll highlight it later] the amount of teamwork you pour into the game is actually pretty awesome. problem is, the friendly AI seems to be pretty terrible at actually taking advantage of their class abilities... but, that's why you play with friends.

I don't think Brink was ever really designed to stand out as a single player title, though. In the little bits i've played, communication has been key and you can't really direct the AI to do what you want, so while you can play by yourself, in Brink, just like in [mostly] everything else in life, it's better with friends.

However, getting in with your friends is kind of annoying... my friend invited me to his game and instead i was brought to another menu, where i had to press A to join the match i just accepted the invite for. Seems kind of counterintuitive to me, but i could see where it may come in handy later on. [friend sitreps you and you cater your character to what is needed in that given scenario]

The parkour/freerunning is very touchy. One wrong move and you're at the bottom, however, when mastered, it can help you navigate environments greatly. Tip: KNOW YOUR BODY TYPE. If you're a heavy, freerunning is not for you.

I want to spend a little more time with it before i give my final say, but so far i'm really enjoying Brink... Not a 5-star worthy game by any means but not worth the shitty score it got here either. it's a good 3.5/5.

2 out of 5 is a little ridiculous. Hopefully anyone interested in this game reads some other reviews or sees for themselves.

It sounds like the reviewer slammed the game because he didn't get enough "hero moments". Maybe he needs some practice.

Not ALL power-ups you purchase are class-related. You can purchase just as many generic "all purpose" power-ups that work great with any class.

You don't need power-ups installed to do the basic functions of each class, so in the event that you are playing with 7 other Medics and all you really need is a Soldier to blow the door, just change to soldier, blow the door and go back to being whatever class you like best. It's a feature to keep the game moving, not a flaw.

Choke points? I guess they can be a problem when all the noobs pile into one area because they don't know their way around to flank.

It's not COD, but that's no reason to give it a 2. COD junkies are starting to sound like sports dorks criticizing the latest Madden.

The dogpiling that Justin is referring to, I observed on the last legit mission of the single player campaign last night...I don't think the problem with be as bad in the MP context since hopefully other players won't be as illogical as the ally AI. Then again, that prime bottleneck on the last objective, no amount of parkour's going to bypass that, so it leaves the potential of lopsided, COD4 type TDM rounds.

That said, I didn't think the campaign was that awful. Yeah, no really coherent story, but then again kz2/kz3's was only slightly better. It only became a painful mess really on the last objective of the last main level (I still have the two "alt mission levels to play).

Should be fun when the PSN comes up for MP...

Did anybody get the whole parkour thing to work well, or does it only see the best advantage when using a light class? (I was spamming the default medium for most of the campaign).

Thanks Griffin, great review. I'm so disappointed, for myself and for Splash Damage. They did such a great job with Quake Wars (on the PC anyway, the less said about those horrible console ports the better). I really thought they were going to get it right this time but having read your review I can see that this is not going to scratch my Quake Wars itch. What I always found suspicious about this game during its production was how fantastic the screenshots looked, yet when you saw realtime gameplay it looked goddamn awful; now we know which is true. Well, maybe some other developer can steal the good ideas and make the game that Brink should have been. Guess I'm going to have to wait until Battlefield 3.

This review stinks with fail. Not on Brink's part but on the ability of the writer to actually write a review. This game has issues just like any other and shouldn't be compared to CoD so much. Since when did CoD become the standard of an FPS? Anyway to know whether or not it is truly good you need to play it. I have no personal complaints on it at all.

"It punishes players who invest in a single class that resonates with them."

Exactly, and don't forget to reset your points it actually costs you one level. So you end up loosing a point when you want to play a different class, unless you play without some of the abilities others will have. It's just amazingly stupid.

Such a shame, I've been looking forward to Brink for ages.

People at work keep asking me about BRINK and try to compare it to CoD. I straight up tell them. This game is NOTHING like CoD or Halo. If all you want to do is mindlessly run around shooting people for no reason...DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!! If you want to actually work as a team and have a role that you can be proud of to finish an objective.. you will enjoy this. CoD is the New MADDEN. Same game every year with a few new modes added and the same zombies walkin into the store buying the game calling it a STANDARD. BRINK is GREAT... you just have to have a brain to play it. NO ZOMBIES ALLOWED!!!!!!

Damn, I've never seen a flame war like this for a game. If you want to use ONE review to help you figure out which game to buy, fine. However, Gamespy gave this a 4/5, IGN gave it a 6/10, and the rest were the same or in the middle.
