GameStop will honor Duke Nukem Forever pre-orders from simpler times
55
This one goes out to Tommy (now "Tom") Meredith. In 1997, the then 17-year-old borrowed his parent's car and, with a big grin and five dollars, drove over to the local EB Games to pre-order Duke Nukem Forever. Now 31, with a receding hairline, three kids (only two of which he's sure are his), a defaulted mortgage, divorce and a vasectomy later, he will finally be able to redeem that receipt. A receipt that not only represents an innocent time, but all the hopes and dreams of his younger self.
GamePro checked in with GameStop regarding pre-orders made back in the twilight years of Babbage's. The retailer simply encourages customers who pre-ordered over a year ago to verify their reservation with a local store prior to launch. As long as the customer has a receipt the company will "honor even those pre-orders taken long ago." All pre-order customers will receive Duke's Big Package. And Tom Meredith will learn to smile again.

So, they don't have the records? How many people actually held on to such a small piece of paper? A few dozen maybe.
It's nice that they will honor it, even though I'm pretty sure they are legally inclined too, but I worry for those who merely left the preorders in the hands of EB games files.

@Arsenic13 I kept my receipt from when I preordered it back in 2001, but I kept it in my wallet. By 2002 it was a blank white piece of paper.

Oh man, I forgot about the old preorders. This is just crazy. Some kind of world record for the longest reservation held?

I've been told that I was given a reservation to Hell when I turned 2. Upon arrival I will be forced to play Custer's Revenge and E.T simultaneously while watching The Legend of Zelda TV series and Super Mario Bros Movie simultaneously.
It's not all bad, I'll also be given two more eyes (stereoscopic, no less!) and two more arms to meet that end.
Of course, if they lose the receipt the joke will be on them!

I'm sure both of these people will be happy. Of course they'll probably have to update their reservations from PC to 360 or PS3...

The first paragraph made me realize how long 14 years can actually be. I wonder how many of the bright-eyed kids that pre-ordered DNF so long ago are now world-weary adults?

I was 17 back in 1997 as well, waiting for DNF (instead we got those 3rd person Duke games for PS1). Now, I've been a lawyer for 5 years.

I usually don't have many nice things to say about gamestop, but this is an exception.
. I remember Babbage's at the mall, since I once bought One Unit Whole Blood there, and it became my favorite pc game of all time. I was only about 12 years old when I was balls deep into Duke Nukem 3D on my first home PC. Duke Nukem Forever was announced, but at that time I was entirely too young to pre-order it, but my best friend and I saved the issues of PC gamer and PC Accelerator that had brief paragraphs on it with absolutely no screenshots. I told myself that when the game came out, I would ask my dad to buy it for me. I'm 26, now and getting the game for myself on release date. Sill have the same best friend that mocked me all these years for waiting for this game, but I will be having the last laugh!
I briefly considered getting the "Balls Of Steel Edition" for PS3, but I decided against it on the grounds that my 12 year old self would kick my own ass for not playing the game on PC. But it's true. If anything, for the future mods alone...

Sadly my dad passed away about 3 years ago at the age of 49. I miss him very much, and even though I lived with my from 7-16 when they divorced, I got to see him enough, and he was the main supporter of my gaming habit, getting my brother a I a NES (with power pad), ps1 and ps2 (both with twisted metal FTW!), and my first PC.
I moved back in with him when I was 16, and didn't care for school at the time, but he kind of knocked responsibility into me and I'll always be grateful for that. He passed away while I was in community college, but in a way it increased my resolve to accomplish the things I know would make him proud. I'm in my final year of university about to get my BA in liberal studies and my teaching credential, and I attribute a lot of my success to the time I spent with him. He was just as badass as The Duke!
And Aquacharger, don't feel bad about the comment, if anything, it brings back the joy I got from the day the Diablo II: Lord Of Destruction expansion came out, and my friends picked me up to go get their copies from FRYS. I remember telling my dad while he was changing the oil on his truck, and like the true badass he was, pulled out sixty bucks on the promise that I helped him to work on the truck as soon as I got back! Total badass!!!

tom probably walked into Pre-Order aka"Game Stop" to buy some other game, when the sales rep threw him his or her sales pitch. tom politly rufused, but the the sale rep continued to tell tom about how the devs would not be able to feed their families and how the game would probably never be made . tom started feeling quilty and so he pre-ordered duke nukem forever.

The sad fact is that Gamestop employees risk losing their jobs if they don't make a quota of preorders. So if you actually like your local Gamestop employees, and want them to stick around, then for the love of Christ, preorder the games that you're planning on picking up anyway!
Plus, if you preorder an item far enough in advance, then you can use that like a layaway program. I preorder Bioshock Infinite the day it became available, and I've thrown down $10 per pay period since the initial down payment. As such, I'll have it paid off long before it ever comes out, and I'm not stuck with a lump sum payment on launch day.
Oh, and I happen to like the free stuff you usually get with preorders...

I worked at a Babbages that finally closed down in 2003.
The last 4 days I was with them, I must've made at least 2000 phone calls asking people to come pick up their $5 for ANY pre-order, or asking if they wanted it transferred to a nearby Gamestop.
I just took the refund. But we had pre-orders dating back to 1998.

I was into Duke Nukem back in the PS1 days, Duke Nukem Time to Kill was the first game I ever played from the series. I remember hearing alot about DNF after high school even it being canceled. I want to get it if it turns out to be good. My brother has it paid for got the Balls Edition waiting for him next month.

When DNF was announced, pre-order receipts were branded on a piece of cow hide. That was a lot more economical than etching them onto dragon scales like they were doing the year before.
