Always find the element of "completely changing a series" and "we're totally fans of the original, like wow man" occurring way too often to be true.

"We're huge fans of the series, we loved UFO: Enemy Unknown, so as such our original design idea was to throw EVERYTHING about it out and instead make it about a blob that steals people's bodies."

@Copybass Ah jeez zombies
-various hotspots occur and you have to choose which to attempt
-you hand-pick a team of agents
-agents level up and can be equipped for various roles
-combat has tactical, time-based elements
-you have to balance completing a main objective quickly/safely against taking risks to acquire tech
-tech is used to research long-term weapon/equipment gains back at your base
-etc, etc

Yeah, it sure sounds like they threw "EVERYTHING" out from UFO Defense...

If you want a carbon copy of the original game....play the original game. It's available on Steam. Cheers, Mr. Troll. :-)

@Zippon I think he was referring to when the game was first revealed, where they basically said it was going to be a first person shooter with self chosen missions.

I agree that this seems a lot more in line with the x-com of old.

Nah, you're giving these two jokers too much credit. They're directly quoting this current article, with the current details, using the same trollish tone that's polluted almost every XCOM discussion I've seen.

A lot of the elements they are fleshing out were there from the start, too. They're just hitting them harder in the new interviews, to combat all the nerd rage. Some folks simply won't be happy until they have another TBS X-COM set in the same year as the original with the same exact enemies. Then again, if they gave us a graphically updated version of UFO Defense, then all the nerd rage would be about how, "They're ripping us off! This is just like the original! BOOOring!" Can't win. Just can't win.

It's got my attention after hearing about it in the past week. Stuff like building up your agents, going out to capture technology, researching new equipment etc sounds appealing to me.

Sigh. As if this year wasn't jam packed enough already.

@Ample Salty Don't worry, this game will probably not be worth your time unless they spend a significant amount more time making combat dynamic and giving the world anything other than superficial lore.

@Epoque I really doubt they would release on the same day, although it is slated. That just screams brazen stupidity, and not because XCOM will amount to nothing or ME3 will appeal to "everyone" either. Just poor timing over all regarding competition.

Still wish it kept the original setting of X-com as well.
Not a fan of the 60's setting personally.

Let me get this straight...

The first build last year was going to be a "true successor" because they were big fans of the series.

Now they've radically changed it to make it a "true successor" because they're big fans of the series.

Too bad being a "big fan" has nothing to do with whether you can design a game well or not.

Having seen the same press demo at E3, I will let you all know right now this game is mediocrity incarnate.

Yes, it obviously took some Mass Effect influence, but only at a superficial level. The voice acting is middling, the combat looks uninteresting, and the graphics are disappointing.

The enemies are bland "shapeshifters" which is a copout way of saying "it's easier to model enemies that share the bodies of the protagonists from the neck down."

Essentially, they took the soul out of XCOM, put it into an ungainly FPS, and are now trying to serve it to gamers who are too easily influenced by press releases to know the difference.

AUGH. Now not only have they stuck an FPS in my turn based game, they also stuck an MMORPG style abilities in there too? :(

I've been keeping an eye on this game for some time now. Having never played the original, I luckily have no hang ups over changes made to the series and look forward to seeing how it turns out. This preview is sounding rather good IMO

@Cleric They are negative for a reason. They took the soul out of X-COM as a brazen milking attempt to play off nostalgia of fans while raking in FPS fans. The game is not actually promising, and the demo shows by the developers at E3 was disappointing.

How's it cashing off nostalgia? It's been upfront about what it is. It's not like they're showing Psi Power off or anything.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. No X-COM sequel so far has been faithful to the original (Well, except maybe for Terror from the Deep, but that was the Lost Levels of X-COM saga) nor very good.

This game at least might get the latter part right.

It won't be a true XCOM game without a cruise-ship mission where you're constantly being flanked for several floors by crab-men, utterly lacking in ammo, and missing every other crucial shot you fire.

Oh, and throw in some random bugs where you lose all your equipment for no reason.

I'm not sure what to think. As someone who played the original turn-based strategy games, this doesn't feel even remotely like that. I know it's an FPS and all, but the universe just feels off.
Hope there's the research and autopsies and stuff like that at least.

Well, I'm less worried about it being a complete cluster eff and just ripping off a name while trying to cater to dude bros with mindless alien shooting.

But XCom is my favorite game ever and I'm still pretty worried that this is going to completely miss the soul of it's name sake.

I think what worries me most here is that I'm seeing writing and not video to prove what they're talking about.

I get the impression that they created a Bioshock clone (which was in itself a System Shock clone - but without as good a villain) and then realised that the very people they were trying to sell the product to - the UFO Enemy Unknown fans - were mostly scratching their heads and saying 'but it's a story FPS and not a global strategy and unfolding mystery game'.

The original UFO had a key certain aspect - you had NO idea what was going on. These FPS's tend towards showing you way too much too early and you can extrapolate 95% of what is going to happen before it does.

But I digress. I feel they panicked, realised that the fans were not all that interested - especially after being burned too many times by companies like EA (C&C4) and Lionhead (Fable 3) - and that they weren't going to buy it until it made it into the bargain bin - and then decided to start tacking in extra functions. The problem is that to change the game THAT much requires a huge redesign or you just end up with a team-based 'tactical' game which you start playing properly and then eventually say 'screw it, screw the team bit, I can do this all myself' - and then you do.

I admit I'm not a fan of the historical time either. I had old junk in Bioshock. I want current day that steadily becomes more futuristic as I research and develop new parts into my weaponry (and ammo), armour, devices, robots (can't have UFO without the big robots), aircraft and base facilities...

If you're just going to show me another 50's-styled 'lightning gun' then GTFO and show me the plasma rifles, cannons, etc.
