"Relating to the recent rumours, Crytek do not have any next generation hardware from Microsoft, nor do we know when Microsoft may announce future hardware or what that hardware will entail. Crytek are working at pushing the boundaries of what current technology can bring, including our focus on DX11 which will be released shortly as an update for Crysis 2, and we believe this work, added to our estimations of what the new hardware will provide, set up CryENGINE as a next generation engine for all consoles."Besides, it wouldn't make much sense for Microsoft to announce a new console when it's all gung-ho on Kinect right now -- unless the new console uses Kinect. You guys, we think we just figured it out!
Crytek denies it has new Xbox hardware
54
Earlier this week, Videogamer reported a rumor that the next generation of Microsoft hardware would be unveiled at E3 2012 and that Crytek already had its mitts on it, supposedly developing TimeSplitters 4 -- which would also be shown off at next year's annual trade show. However, according to the latest Crytek newsletter, it's all baloney.

@rambo8 I agree. People keep mentioning that they hit a wall, yet new games keep pushing both consoles further graphically. Unless a major change happens in a year, I am fine waiting 2-3 years for a new console.

Well you're right about the PS3 but I think the 360 is nearing the end of the line. I mean the software update kept it fresh for a while but with games getting more & more high end, the 360 is having trouble keeping up. I would love to hear about a new console.

@Prboi I agree, games are really looking good overall but in the end the PS3 exclusives still outshine pretty much everything else. Granted the 3rd party stuff like Rage and BF3 will look awesome on both consoles.

Actually, the current systems *are* more future-proof than their predecessors. Thanks to their online functionality, these PS3 and Xbox have been able to "upgrade" themselves over the years, expanding functionality, stability, usability, etc. I mean shit, Microsoft apparently found a way to unlock an extra GB of space on their DVDs. Sure, we can't upgrade the tech per se, but these systems have proven to be in the game for the long-haul and were built with that in mind, and now run more efficiently and are feature-rich. Also, we can pretty much say that developers now know these systems in/out, so I'm sure there are plenty of tools that have helped make their jobs more efficient, leading to a better final product.

The PS3 badly needs a new release just so they can build it with PSN in mind this time instead of tacking PSN onto architecture that wasn't built for it like they did with the PS3.
That's why there's no party chat on the PS3, the infastructure just isn't there. You can see it in their "cross game invites", which are really nothing more than message triggers for in-game invites. When you're in KZ3 and someone invites you to UC2 you're not actually getting a cross-game invite, you're getting an in-game UC2 invite and a separate message that basically says "hey go check out UC2 you have an invite there".
On the 360, all of the Live objects are built as exactly that...objects. And those objects are completely separate from the games and merely have hooks that the game can call. The PSN was not built like this, and as a result every new "feature" is really just a hack to get things to work right.
I think Sony was caught offguard by how big online networks and marketplaces would become this gen. Now that they know, and with a fresh start building the architecture to actually support that I'm confident that they can do a really good job that seriously forces Microsoft's hand into offering a cheaper service rather than just tickling it.

i disagree. as long as multiplatform games are more-or-less identical on both consoles, it's hard to agree with your statement. personally, i still think exclusives look great on the 360. just look at alan wake, gears of war 3, and halo reach. maybe they don't look as good as uncharted, but who really cares? the system came out a year before, and the fact that multiplatform games still look so similar is pretty amazing. i feel like there was a much larger divide last gen with the graphics of the ps2 and those of the original xbox.
the only thing at this point that i am concerned about is the disc space on dvds. as games get bigger, which is inevitably going to happen, there will be more titles that take up 2 or maybe even 3 dvds. however, i think the developers could put a little more thought into how they format the discs. for example, i see little reason why visceral/ea couldn't put the dead space 2 campaign on a single dvd while putting the multiplayer component (which i have still not played) on a separate disc. that just didn't make sense to me...

Separate the hardcore and casual by giving serious gamers a new console, and the casuals get a Kinect-enabled 360, given that they are probably not willing to buy another console.
I doubt MS will even consider an idea of that sort, being that they consider Kinect their new hardware for the moment, which is silly. Plus, their corporate mindset is seemingly "We believe that Kinect offers an immersive experience for everyone". Again, silly.

My own prediction is that MS is going to deny deny deny.....BUT I think they have a very big opportunity to launch a new console simultaneously with HALO 4 so I'm putting y money on that. This same time frame would of course have a Call of Duty slated to launch assumingly with a new engine since they have yet to build a new engine for their shitty game. So what better time then Holiday 2012.
This would put the current generation at a 7 year life with with a 2012 launch which is quite a long time without a hardware refresh so to stretch the xbox 360 beyond this to 8 years would be crazy in my opinion.

Why are so many people willing to wait a few more years for new consoles? Consoles typically last 4-5 years on the market, eg. Xbox from 2001-2005, Gamecube from 2001-2006, PS2 from 2000-2006, etc.
The 360/PS3 are outdated and nearing or already at the end of their life cycle. And you guys want to wait a few more years? Would you have been happy with developers still trying to milk out the PS2 and not having the PS3 launch until 2008-2009?
Is it the poor economy? Do gamers have less money from buying tons of DLC and Rock Band peripherals for their games when in last generations, they just bought games in addition to the system at first?

I think part of the problem is that this generation of consoles launched at such a high price point and has stayed pretty high, especially with the inclusion of expensive accessories. People just aren't ready to drop another $399+games+controllers+online access yet.

@SisypheanLife Your right, there's a lot more things this gen to make our wallets lighter. Pay for Xbox Live, pay for a larger hard drive, pay for DLC in addition to the games and controllers and systems.
Previous generations didn't pay for online gaming, DLC and larger hard drives to store their content.
I still want new consoles to come out ASAP, especially with me being a PC gamer, so the industry can move forward. Its frustrating when you have a high-end rig and have outdated consoles the star of the show for developers. But I am in the minority. : (

I love PC gaming, but I flip back and forth. I'm a PC gamer early in the console gen, until about three years into it, when hardware is stable, prices come down, and there's a huge backlog of games. Then, I play through those for a couple of years and go back to PC gaming for a couple years. It reduces my expenses for consoles, games, and PC parts that way.

@nerdydesi1 I think that there are a number of factors that play into this console cycle being far longer than longer. As stated above me, the extra costs that came along with this generation along with the high price point are causing, I believe, people to want a longer time period on their investment.
Added to these factors IMO is that graphical fidelity has come to the stage where any jump will be of a more incremental nature and as such it'll take a while for people to feel the need to move on. Plus, we're still in a global recession and the cost for developing games is huge as it is, I doubt many developers will desparately want to jump onto a new generation.
And I disagree that this generation is coming to an end. In the near future we'll have Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3 and a slew of other big name games right into 2012 and beyond. I'm happy enough with what's coming to not need a new generation!

It would be suicide for MS to announce the next Xbox at E3 2012. It's sales this year have been higher than any previous year's and will probably maintain the same momentum coming into the holiday season in which MW3 & BF3 will continue to push consoles out the door.
It makes no sense for them (or Sony who is also doing really well) to announce a new console in 2012.
I assume it'd be a E3 '13 for holidays 2014 release or a E3 '14 announcement for holidays 2014 release.
Just my $0.02

Money doesn't matter to me on the console price. I'd still get one. The thing is like most people said...there isn't much farther to go with it for now. They can basically just upgrade the graphics at this point and it'd be not even worth it as the PC would trump it by the time the system released again anyway.
I mean, now these consoles are doing our TV, or music and our browsing. They're full on media machines which they never TRULY have been before.
It's a new age and in this age consoles probably really do last 8-10 years.

I think the popular missconception is that the present slim 360 uses the same specification hardware as the launch console, it would be like shopping to get a exact replacement for the processor for your 5 year old PC. The slim 360 has new hardware but it is locked to a speed specification to keep each console running at the same processing speed as all the others, otherwise online gaming would be near imposable at the diffing speeds each edition console would run at. What MS need to invest in is an intelligent program to place in games to detect the model and tailor the graphics and processing rate available for the game in an offline game making it better looking and lag free, much like auto-detect in older PC games that sets stuff up based on your PC specs.

Updates aside, you're still talking about 2004 silicon in there - no software will help that.

"The Wii U specs are much higher than the 360, games like LA Noire are on 3 DVD's... Microsoft will have to respond somehow."
I would wait untill we actually see the specs confirmed before you jump on the bandwagon. If all the sources are correct and the GPU in the Wii U is RV770 and the silicon confirmed to be used for the CPU in the Wii U is 45 nm which of course is 2008 silicon. So for a new console coming out in 2012 it will be using a 4 year old GPU and 4 year old silicon base.
This takes me on to your second comment....
"Updates aside, you're still talking about 2004 silicon in there "
I love the fact that out of the 2 different nodes used in the 360 you got the year wrong but then your entire comment just drips with stupidity. For the record the 360 first shipped with a 90nm which was 2002 silicon and the current models use 65nm which is 2006 silicon.
