Zynga's trick is to pull out hit after hit. They've managed to turn the *ville series into a recognizable brand in itself. And the way they make money is through addiction, this isn't something that people just drop, it becomes habit.

Zynga have been clever with their acquisitions, branching out into other casual genres and general mobile gaming, diversifying and reducing their risk.

Because EA's been sleeping, more people are familiar with Cityville then they are with SimCity. Heck, Zynga might even get out a Sims clone before The Sims comes out.

With another billion dollars in funding, they could build an FPS if they wanted. The valuation at $20B may be overpriced, but unlike recent IPOs such as Pandora, LinkedIn and (upcoming) Groupon, these guys are printing money and their margin is unbelievable. This is a safe bet.

@Fire Walk With Me
You are aware they are the largest third-party video game publisher on earth now right? They aren't going to last forever, nothing does, but they aren't going away tomorrow nor are they going to stop making money any time soon. Casual games are by FAR the biggest section of the market now. Let's review: this week alone the CEO of Marvel Studios, during a peak time, left to become a "special consultant" to rovio, who have basically made ONE GAME. It's just a game that has been downloaded 100 MILLION times. This might seem absurb (and it is), but not as much as you would think. When I was at TRU yesterday, the woman in front of me was buying over $100 (I kid you not) of stuffed angry birds. Apparently, this is not rare. They very commonly sell out of all of them as quick as they get them in. Short version: the world is insane and I guarantee you zynga will continue to make absurd amounts of money for at least a few years.

@ShadowXIII I wouldn't hold your breath. As much as I'd like to see them fail their fundamentals actually seem pretty strong, so don't count on them to drop like a rock on day one of their IPO. On the other hand their success depends on maintaining a good relationship with Facebook. So if something happens to Facebook . . .

Ask me that again if this takes off and the release list on next gen systems is a hard choice between titles that you normally would see on facebook.

Want to see the latest Activision game? Here have a look:

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze When a company is little more than a glorified ponzi scheme, I will gladly cheer for its demise. I'm not saying Zynga is one, but there's plenty of circumstances that I'd hope for a company to fail. If you're smart you can even make money off of a company's failure.

@ShadowXIII I don't get angry when G rated movies that I wont see are released so Zynga doesn't threaten me. I do think the sudden proliferation of cash shops in games is disturbing though.

@chocobox Except that Google invested like $100 million in Zynga last year, so they HAVE hired the corrupt power of Zynga... probably to make games for Google+

@ShadowXIII I agree wholeheartedly, it's just too bad there are too many n00-I mean average people out there who don't know better and think Farmville and Cityville and such are the best games ever. Zynga will be making money for a very long time, and most of us gaers will be raging at them for just as long.

@DJ Kenneth A Except Zynga actually has a positive cash flow and a reasonable level of debt. I won't say they're a good or bad investment, but I wouldn't say it's another dotcom bust.

@Faceless Troll - I'd go so far as to say that they are a good short term investment. They are likely to go up, long before they go down, and there is money to be made there. Facebook is a Goliath, and despite reports of them losing users, they are still the only game in town. I can't see the people addicted to Zynga games going anywhere either.

(Warning: This is not stock buying advice. I don't have the expertise to offer that. Buy Zynga stock only at your own peril. Don't blame BananaBoat or BananaCO (his Fijian subsidiary) if you lose your ass.)
