Blizzard 'working hard' to ship Diablo 3 this year, but no promises
46
Today's Activision Blizzard earnings release includes the following disclaimer: "Since Blizzard Entertainment has not confirmed a launch date for its next global release, the company's calendar year outlook at this time does not include a new game from Blizzard in 2011."
But before you go tweetbooking about how Diablo 3 is never coming out, allow Blizz prez and co-founder Mike Morhaime a chance to address your concerns. "We are still working hard to ship the game before the end of the year; however, we're not ready to commit to a release date at this time," Morhaime told investors during a call this afternoon.
While Morhaime may not be sure if the retail box will be in stores before 2012, he's more confident that you'll be playing it in some capacity. "Diablo 3 is still on track to go into external beta testing later this quarter," Morhaime said. "We are very much looking forward to getting the beta into the hands of our players and collecting their feedback for the final phase of development."
Unlike many public(ity) betas, Morhaime insists this feedback is significant for Diablo 3. "There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to putting out a complex release like Diablo 3," Morhaime said. "We talked about the new auction house technology which has not been fully tested. We're not yet in beta and really it's just going to come down to when the game is ready for prime-time."
In fact, it sounds like Blizzard is waiting on the feedback from the beta before it makes a final decision on whether or not to release D3 this year. "We'll know more when we hit beta and we'll know more when we put some of these new systems into test. It's a brand new infrastructure, with a lot of complex moving parts." If you want Diablo 3 sooner than later, our advice is to join the beta and leave effusively positive feedback. It's a fool-proof plan!

In other words, when people finally play their character all the way through Act 1 and have only made two decisions about their character (class and the 6 skills) and have not done anything else (spent stat or skill points since both are automatically spent for you) they're going to revamp their systems again, and again, and again instead of just going back to what works.
Either that or they'll say "WELL, YOU GUYS JUST WAIT FOR ACT 2 TO GET RUNES!" and the game will come out and not be as fun as it could have and then in the expansion they'll give us the ability to customize our characters how we choose.

@Credge After what i've learned about this game (permanent online connection required, in-game store that allows sale of items using real money, mod support is not just disabled, it's BANNED) and what they have said regarding the players (that we are no diffrent from gold farmers), Blizzard can take this game, and shove it up their collective asses.
Just in case people think i'm bullshitting:

Still buying it. I don't care about mods for a game like Diablo and the auction thing is a complete non-issue IMO. You could buy items off places like eBay in Diablo II, so in practice almost has really changed other than Blizzard takes a cut of the auction. I'm against DRM on principle, but in this case I'll never see it. If you're playing Diablo offline you're doing it wrong.

@Vidikron Some people want to play single player. Some don't have the greatest internet connection. Some people have a laptop and travel about. Just because you will stick online all the time does not mean all others will.
And if we are calling Ubisoft on their DRM, then we have to call Blizzard on it too. Otherwise, sure is doublestandard in here.

@Death Threat Except that's not entirely true, Ubisoft has said DRM in a game where the main draw is the single play (AC2: Brother Hood, From Dust). Blizzard puts it in a game where multiplayer is the main draw and where a real cash auction is in place. Do you see the difference yet? Offline game with crazy online restrictions, Online game with restrictions to prevent cheating.

Your argument makes sense, but I've never viewed the Diablo series as multiplayer focused. The first game had multiplayer almost as a bonus, mostly due to limited technology. The second's feature were much more robust, and there were spells and such designed to be more effective in a party, so there were some incentives for playing multiplayer, but it wasn't like you would never be able to finish the game going solo.
I've just never thought of multiplayer as the main focus of the series, because of how rich the single player experiences were. And maybe that's changed with D3. And even though there are many people out there who will buy the game... I won't be. Simply because my internet connection isn't stable enough for me to justify paying for a game I probably wouldn't be able to play consistently anyway. And that honestly makes me sad.

Rob Prado recently said the game was completely done all the way to Diablo and everyone that works at Blizzard can play it.
I just hope they don't release it on the same day as Skyrim or The Old Republic.

Anyway, I'm so desensitized to the Blizzard "soon" response that I'll just sit back and chill until I see a link for beta signups.

Awesome. Can't wait to read the future post where employees come out about the grinding for this title.
I know, I know...they treat their employees good, this is Blizzard after all. Not like Kodick has any kind of say.

The game is finished. They're just trying to cut it up cleanly in segments that they can release later as "expansions".

And please tell me how they're going to test the AH in a beta. Nobody is going to fork up real money in a beta to test the AH.

Exactly what I was thinking. Oh noes my money went down a black hole! Blizz: Sucks to be you. Put more money in.
And this game isnt as complicated as they are making it sound. Its just clicking on stuff with 4 player multiplayer. Its not a full on mmorpg. Sometimes they just shouldnt say anything.

Its still single player, always has been, always will be. There is co-op multiplayer and PVP too. There is no town with a million player characters running around like WoW. The only player characters you will see in your game are the ones you invite in.
From sticky FAQ
http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=27800569797&sid=3000
Q: Can all gear be obtained by solo playing?
A: Yes. All content is accessible in single player. This includes gear, skills, quests, and all other aspects of the game.
Q: What are the in-game benefits of playing in group?
A: There are no direct benefits from playing multiplayer. There are no items, quests, monsters, or anything else that is exclusive to multiplayer. The only real difference is getting to play the game with other people. There may be some indirect benefits like larger access to items since each player gets their only loot and can trade it with you. There is also the possibility of increased leveling speed by being able to kill harder monsters quicker.
Good info here too:

They aren't testing the real money auction house... They are testing the gold one. I'm sorry, but duh! It gets the same server-side testing across, but has none of the other issues.
It does mean the balancing of real money goes untested, but Blizzard will and does patch often so that'll be taken care of post-launch quickly.

I bet that the real money transaction part of the auction house has a big part to play about why the game is taking so long to get ready.
I would prefer that Blizz just scraped that idea so the game would take that much time less to get ready for retail.

Not quite sure what those dodgy looking sites are doing...trading items for money? Nah, can't be. But they look trustworthy. Most Certainly its all a lie and none of those sites exist, because trading items for money never happened in Diablo 2.

In other words they are going to coincide the release of Diablo 3 (Or its Open Beta) with the release of the biggest threat to WoW so far (The Old Republic). Oh Blizzard...u so evil!
They've done this many times before, releasing major updates and expansions to coincide with competing games like LOTRO.

You whiny douche bags will not be missed. For every vocally butthurt blog commenter, there are a hundred real diablo fans that can't wait to buy the game. No auction house, mods, or DRM is going to change that.

These days it seems like Devs think they can win 'rep' by not setting dates and making delays in the name of 'a better game' but seldom do they actually produce such a better game than what could have been released without a delay.
inb4 d/b-fb
What I'm saying is, I'm all for 'till it's ready' etc mantra but realize that each time you delay and every month extra it takes... I expect it to be 'that much better' so you better deliver because come launch day I will not pull punches nor will I sit and accept anything but a flawless-a few MINOR bugs-game.
Of course this is assuming I decide to buy D3 anymore, lately the news around it has been pushing me away more than getting me hyped.
