Report: Square Enix to expand Eidos Montreal, add 350 employees by 2015
47
Do you still find it difficult to reconcile the critically adored, Western-developed Deus Ex: Human Revolution with the Square Enix logo on the game's packaging? You'll get over it in the coming years, as La Presse Affaires reports that Eidos Montréal aims to double in size and accomodate 350 additional employees by 2015.
Though Square Enix has yet to officially announce such plans, the report states that a tentative agreement has been made between the Japanese company (which acquired Eidos in 2009) and financier Investissement Québec. The deal, when solidified, will grant tax credits and a $2 million subsidy to Square.
Earlier reports suggested that Square would establish a new studio once talks with several Canadian provincial governments had concluded. According to La Presse, it has opted to boost its existing Eidos location from 330 to 680 employees over the next four years. Square will reportedly increase staff count by 100 toward the end of 2012.
This news bodes well for Eidos Montréal's two current projects, particularly for Th14f. One of those 680 employees should be able to come up with a proper logo.
[Thanks, Phillipe.]

I will be about 60 by the time FF27 comes out, maybe older if they keep doing sequels (FF13-2). And by that time FF27 will be a phone game. *shudder*

Edios is a great asset to SE than SE is. Batman, Just cause 2, Dues Ex...they keep knocking it out of the park.
SE/Eidos merger was the best one to happen by far in terms of games quality. So happy for Montreal their success is well earned.

Edios' games never achieve the ultra high ratings developers like Naughty Dog and Bioware do, but they make consistently satisfying games that are darn fun to play.

Yea because square-enix a company which is one of of top 10 grossing video game companies needs eidos more then it itself, a company which filed for bankruptcy as enix bought them. **rolls eyes**
I however agree that dues ex was major success.

@(Unverified) Since the merger both companies have gotten stronger in my opinion. But the Eidos side has been far stronger. That is all I am saying.

I figured it was worth pointing out that Eidos was only the publisher for Akham Asylum, Rock Steady were the actual developers.

Oh, man, I had no idea Eidos Montreal was doing Thief 4.
I am so impressed with their work on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I hope Thief 4 is just as good.

Give them Final Fantasy XV or even an offshoot.
Get new blood, a new perspective into the franchise.

@Alexisonfire don't take valuable resources off the team. put them to work on the next deus ex hr 2 instead. final fantasy series is very, very dull/linear/boring. just let that series die.

Funny how you say the best course of action is to let a tired, old, over sequel-ized series die and instead immediately force a rejuvenized series into a cycle of sequels.
Best course of action is for Square Enix is for Eidos Montreal to make a new series and for Final Fantasy to stop after Versus 13.
But we all know that SE would never let FF die, so why not let a talented western developer at least give the franchise a new vision, much like they did with Deus Ex?

Fantastic news!
With all the stories of studios closing left and right it's great to hear one is actually getting BIGGER for a change.

Wow. That's great! When I was skimming through titles on my RSS reader I thought it said Squeenix let 350 people go. I'm glad the studio is doing well enough to expand, unlike many others that are closing down.

please allow non-lethal boss take downs in the next deus ex hr 2. please also allow more freedom between location. let me travel between them whenever i want. please allow more choices and ramification ala the witcher 2. also, please release an sdk/editor so that fans can mod the game (i.e. remove lethal-only boss kills).
i can't wait for thief 4. i want my water arrow! :D
bring out system shock 3 next and we'll be peachy. ;)

Its good to hear they are getting a transfusion they have had a good run of solid titles.
One thing I do find amusing is that when they fire X number of employees or lay off a full division..... they can have it done no later than Tuesday. However when they are slated to hire a decent number of new employees it takes the better part of 4 years.
I will admit it is a lot easier to put 1k people out of work to ensure you get your end of the year Porsche than it is to double up on the right talent to ensure the new studio isn't end of the year Porsche fodder.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that they don't slip up ^^ tho that looks unlikely at least for the immediate future.

Seems like Enix didn't watch the Making Of documentary for Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Eidos Montreal deliberately had a smaller team as it had the benefit of allowing the developers and designers more time to make the game, as well as giving the employees a working environment that felt more personal and was actually enjoyed.
There's not many people who actively enjoy working with 200+ people. Having over 300 employees honestly means nothing to me.
The games might be released faster but at what cost?

@(Unverified) Or Montreal could be working on several Projects at once. I doubt SE signed off on the new hires without consulting E Montreal. They are moving into the big leagues.

@(Unverified) I'm desapointed for this expansion because it goes against the philosophy Eidos Montreal was promoting since the start of the studio. They wanted a small studio and was getting a good vibe from them. I'v visited the studio before they start working on thief 4 and I was feeling like they where a family. But from what I herd from other, it was not really like this.
But since I'm from montreal and work in the video game industry, i'm happy.

There's no way they'd be on Final Fantasy 27 by 2027. Maybe 22 tops.

i wish I could join in with all the love people are giving to Eidos Montreal for DXHR. But the game makes me physically ill due to the head bobbing/camera shaking that occurs while moving around the game. This was my most anticipated game of the past 10 years... and it makes me physically ill.
FML!
Also, not a knock on Eidos but on Square Enix North America... please don't put the soundtrack MP3s on a Blu-ray disc next time. Probably less than 5% of your customers have a Blu-ray drive on their PCs or Macs, which is required to access the MP3s.
