It is strange with the release of the 3DS, but Nintendo has sold close to 150 million (!) DS's and they're obviously still selling. If one isn't doing as well as the other, why not make bank on two platforms at once if you can?

I'm still trying to get my hand on a nice DS lite, I like the 3DS but DS lite is the best....

as for DSIXL the big screen is tempting but I heard it's not that portable...

I dropped my kid off at daycare yesterday and saw three other kids with DSi XLs all playing Mario Kart DS together. Clearly they sell and people are happy with them.

Ironically, all my portables are for home play. I never actually go OUT with them.

I really want an XL, but the price needs to go down. It's the same price as a 3DS. That's not awesome sauce.

@CaptainProtonX It's that rationale that's making me debate on what to get my girlfriend since she wants a DS. Should I get her the DSiXL, since she likes the older DS games I have anyways and likes the pictochat and camera, not to mention the bigger screens since she has some sight problems, or the 3DS which is a more powerful system, plays DS games anways, more portable, but has smaller screens and lack of said pictochat and camera swapping featues the DSi's had.

With this extremely feminine color, I might just get her the DSiXL after all. Though it would be nice to have someone else near me that had a 3DS :(

Same here, though its more due to where I live, Iowa. If I'm going out its generally with friends or family and I'd be talking to them rather than playing games anyway, unless its playing games with said friends. Other than that, I mainly go out when I'm traveling and there just isn't time for that if you're not in the privacy of your vehicle.

Same here.

I only used them on an airplane before but with all the crap you have to go through to fly, I'd sooner get fisted than go through all the "freedom searches" that have been credited to 0 explosives confiscations (to find explosives is the reason searches have gotten more unconstitutional) and actually let through test "terrorists" (government employees testing if the system works). Yes, I'm crazy for having principles even if they're vaguely being squashed in the name of security, but I never claimed to not be crazy or principled.

Also, playing in public tends to annoy me with eye leering and such. Still, when I do travel it's convenient in hotels and at the destination im staying.

Plus, the DS saved my dirty JRPG soul.

Why so much ire towards the DSi XL?

If I was going to replace my DS it would be with a DSi XL.

Why you ask?
Simply because I appreciate it having a larger screen (not that the smaller screen of the DS is an issue) and I don't suffer from today's crippling lack of pockets.

Seriously they add like a cm to a system (in this case quite a few) and people cry that it is some behemoth that won't fit in the back of their SUV let alone their pockets. I'm almost certain that people won't be happy until their game system of choice can be compressed down to a 1"x1" tattoo.

Super Mario Land 3D works on the DS.

like when we had "gameboy color only" games or GBC games that had color on the GBC but no color on the GB

That isn't Backwards Compatibility. Backwards Compatibility is being able to play games from a previous system on the new system. Also, the games you are thinking of are enhanced Gameboy games, and there were GBC that couldn't be played on the GB, though the last games that I can remember that did that were the LoZ: Oracle games on the GBA.

Also, you won't see stuff like Super Mario 3D Land on the DS because the 3DS from the DS is basically the equivalent of the Gamecube from the N64.

The Micro launched after the DS was released, and it was an entire new revision to the GBA. Nothing too surprising here.

Seriously, they need to release a 3DS XL with a 4.2" bottom and a 5" top......SCREENS!!! get your mind out of the gutter

I'm such a silly bitch. I was going to buy an XL after the 3DS because hey, I figured it would drop in price. Then they said how much the 3DS was going to be and I knew it was going to say.

But then I go back to being a Super Silly Bitch and think that after the 3DS price drop they'd surely drop the price of the XL to give the 3DS a sense of more value.

Ah, what it's like to be a Super Silly Bitch...

look at how the 3DS has all the warnings: 3D NOT FOR CHILDREN 6 & UNDER

Ok, so kids 7 years & older technically *can* look at 3D content (according to Nintendo) but why would the average parent take the risk that they're "safe" by 1 or 2 years? So most parents would see the DSi/DSiXL as being a safer console for kids. Yes, the 3D can be turned off using the slider, but again, why would they risk their kids in the first place when there's another DS console that doesn't have that "risk" at all???

Nintendo needs to redefine their safety parameters to be less scary if they expect 3DS adoption by their typical audience: kids.

@HandheldAddictblogspotcom They could add some kind of firmware to be a password-protected "3D lock" that disables the use of the slider.

Or... maybe Nintendo doesn't care if kids don't support the 3DS, hence they still sell DSi/DSi XL for them.

Sure. That may be a good idea. But honestly, for the average parent who wants to get a gaming system for their kids, they don't want to have ANY risk. The only reason they would take the chance would be if their kids specifically really wanted a 3DS, or if they wanted one for themselves & they also wanted to let their kids play it too.

If those aren't the cases, then it's much easier for them to just go with a DSi & be done with it.

Come on it's obvious that Nintendo is just the Japanese version of a video game company becoming a money mongrel. They aren't releasing anything new, it's the same games over and over again sometimes there's some innovation while the rest is plain the same games.

I would be over with Nintendo if it wasn't for Pokémon.

Moderation for all ages should be what the safety says. With that, can even do a cheap fine print of "6 years and younger should have time limit of X".

That said, don't think any warning will really matter that much, once Pokemon 3D hits, the kids will sell their souls to play the game in 3D "For just one more hour pleaseeee".

Also, think more attention will go to DS Lite/DSi/DS XL being cheaper rather than safety.
