Portal is free until Sept. 20
57
Good day, test subjects. Valve is currently offering its first physics-fracturing puzzler, Portal, for free until September 20. Valve was apparently inspired by the way educators are using Portal to teach mathematics, and is giving the game away to engage more students in the sciences ... and cake.
So, if for some reason you've missed out on one of the most praised games of this generation, here's your chance to pick it up on PC or Mac for free (you monsters).
[Thanks, Rahul.]

Oh man, I'm guessing this means we get our Portal 2 DLC on 9/20 as well. I am pumped.

While I love Portal and this whole "teaching with games" thing, I see absolutely no relevant educational value in this field trip. Just say you wanted the kids to have a fun time and don't try to tie it in with math somehow.
Anyways thanks for the free game!

I completely disagree with you. It teaches the kids about computer science and design which is an extremely fast expanding area of expertise since computers are fairly new, and anything to do with computers is still not taught in even high school yet. I think it was a quite informative trip.

I agree it's not a game with a big educational lesson, but neither was Oregon Trail (except that you do not want to get dysentery). Portal is good for learning spatial reasoning and thinking a bit. Certainly healthier than "point gun and shoot."

Portal 1 or 2? Because I got Portal 1 for free with Steam for Mac. That's when my first Portal experience begun. I've been hooked ever since.

@dylanspronck Do you see a 2 at the end of the title?

I get one of those domains for sale things. Even when I search it on Google. Oddly, google even says the site is about Valve and Portal, but when I click, it's just that dumb site.

I picked this game for free wayyyyyyyyy back in the day. I think it is really good. Even if you aren't interested in it, you should at least get it. It has good value in it.

I've played and beaten it, but I don't own it as I played it on a friend's 360. When I put my new computer together, back in May, I lamented not picking up The Orange Box for $10 at Best Buy when I picked up Portal 2. Now the two games that I wanted out of The Orange Box I can have, don't care much for Half-Life.

@pluupy So you're not even going to try it out, even though it's completely free? Or are you just too scared to leave your bubble?

@Faceless Troll Downloaded the trial way back when, disappointed that it was first person perspective, uninstalled. I can't play games where I can't zoom out to see everything going on around me. Might as well fight ninjas wearing horse blinders. :p

There has been a little bit of confusion on this because listings for Portal throughout Steam still show a price of $19.99 on some pages. If you go to the main Portal page though, you can click to download and install without going to the Cart and checking out.

Here's the link to the main Portal page. It should allow you to download for free.

Do you own it, or will it lock up at 20th???

Probably neither. Being as the button just says INSTALL, it's probably like Peggle Extreme and the other "free" games on steam. You can install it and play it all you want for free, but it's not actually tied to your account, so you wouldn't be able to download on any new systems past the 20th, but any system you downloaded it on before then will work just fine past that point. Just a guess, but that's how every single other item on steam works that just has an install button.

I'm pretty sure its a permanent, steam-activated license. I've already installed it on my home pc. I logged in from a machine without steam out of curiosity and when I go to the portal page it says 'You already own Portal' with a 'play now' and 'install steam' link, just like it does on my other retail games.

Dang you, Valve. I tried to stay away from the Steam store. I tried my hardest. Then you lure me in with the free Portal deal. And I end up buying KOTR with the midweek Star Wars deal. Grrr. My wallet hates you

It's difficult to stay away from the Steam Store with all the great deals they have all the time. I go on and plan to spend like $5 and end up spending like $30. Lol

Its funny what Portal (or other games) will do to a non gaming laptop, even one marketed as an "entertainment notebook" like I just got done playing on the one that I am typing this on right now. When I was done the cpu's temperature was up to 137 degrees F. Its a shame really.
@Warlock234 Also, Portal teaching computer science and design? No, abstract thought and how physics effect movement and how objects react to each other, yes. Computer science and design, no.

I love the writing on this site, but I'm confused about the "you monsters" comment. Is that referring to Mac users, anyone who would download Portal for free, or anyone reading the article? The former would be the funniest I suppose, but also the most offensive to me, due to my household's strong ties to Apple.
Still funny though.
