Earlier this year THQ shuttered the Australian studio most likely working on The Avengers: The Video Game, and until now we didn't know how far along the game was, or how awesome it was turning out to be. A freshly leaked video shows The Avengers in a pre-alpha build, highlighting the game's sweet FPS mechanics -- unfortunately THQ has pulled the footage from YouTube, meaning you'll never get to see how amazing this thing was. Your life sucks.
Not to rub it in your face, but we saw it and boy, was it good. The video showed the first-person perspectives of Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America, all using unique fighting styles to destroy their enemies -- or get obliterated by them, as was the case against the X-Men and Fantastic Four Super-Skrulls. The art style appeared sophisticated, especially for a pre-alpha build, and it contained just the right amount of superhero violence, including an active input scene where Hulk slowly snapped the neck of a Super-Skrull. Seriously, it's a shame you'll never see this footage. Ever.
Unless you see it here. We hope you appreciate it more this way.

If you missed it, don't worry about it. It wasn't anything special. In fact, some of it was kinda cringe worthy.

Personally I thought that was the most interesting video game footage based on Marvel characters I've EVER seen.
Maybe you think it's underwhelming compared to other first person RPG's, but as a huge fan of the Avengers and all things Marvel, this would have quite amazing.
As people said below, it's a crime that this was cancelled and every other superhero based games get to live.

The idea of a super hero FPS interests me, especially add in a versus component.
Hulk is your basic tank/brute force class.
Thor/Iron Man could be your mix-and-match multiple purpose classes.
Captain could be a strategic buffing class or something, shield could stun people for a second or two.
With tons of customization obviously.

what do you not get about the whole "pre-alpha build" thing? obviously what you see would have been fixed up and polished. i think it's pretty damn awesome for what it is. has anyone ever NOT wanted to be put in the shoes of a superhero so that you could kick ass from HIS perspective?

I think the reason was a legal one. I believe Sega has the console rights to the Marvel games now (or at least the movie tie-ins)

A bunch of horrible, shitty licensed games get released month after month and this gets canned? I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Derp, double post. Actually, Fox owns the film rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four, and that's why you haven't/won't see them in future Marvel Studios films. However, Marvel does own video game rights to these properties, so theres a chance you could see them pop up in an Avengers video game. Where it gets tricky is when you bring up something like a Super-Skrull.
The question is, does Fox also own the film rights to the iconic X-Men/Fantastic Four powers? I'm inclined to think not, so we may end up seeing a super-skrull or two in the Avengers film that have powers very similar to superheroes featured in other film franchises.

@DDMagnaS Actually this pre-alpha trailer is kind of a spoiler regarding the rumoured plot of the Avengers film. I'm going to say no more for fear of spoiling it further.

What is the videogame industry coming to when even superhero games have to be pitched as first person shooters?

I'm gonna go with Epoque on this, we shouldn't be so quick to judge. Also, I thought this was pretty unique, it had a L4D feel to it.

I didn't say it would be "just another first person shooter".
It would certainly seem different from current first person shooters, but if you are gonna tell me that anything Hulk does in first person with just 2 fists is as interesting as what you can do in Hulk Ultimate destruction then I will have nothing else to say because I would think you're crazy.
I don't think you can live up to the full potential of what these characters can do while playing in first person. And the video here doesn't show anything dramatically different from current FPS conventions. I'll give them the Iron Man flight, but that's about it.
They certainly gave it a good try. It's Interesting, but unnecessary because it limits the actions these characters were doing before.

Well considering the fact that it has a full on melee attack system in the first person perspective, it's not an FPS to start with.
Just because something is in the first person perspective does not make it an FPS.

This actually looked pretty awesome, it's a shame it got cancelled.
Or maybe it's a stunt to garner interest in the project to determine whether or not the game would do well.

So is this a publicity stunt that when the movie releases all of a sudden "it gets" picked back up and now that it has seeds planted the interest is easily revived?

Yeah. The top of the screen said "AI Player 1, 2, and 3" which I assume could be switched out with real players. FPS 4-player super-hero action? That would be so SICK!

Doubt it. Rise of Nightmares proved that, for now at least, the Kinect is far from capable of handling the finesse a game like this would require. You CAN'T have a game like this mistaking a shift or turn forwards with wanting to go a little extra more forwards and towards the right while having the rest working good enough. Otherwise as Hulk, you could end up punching off towards the side, or such.

I feel like this would've been a cool $30 title-just to dick around and play through the story mode with each Avenger a couple times...
