Diablo 3 to launch in early 2012, beta period extended
67
"While this news might not be a complete surprise, I know that many of you were hopeful that Diablo III would ship this year," writes Blizzard president Mike Morhaime. "We were too."
This means, for a brief period in time, Diablo's fans and creators were united in convincing themselves that a Blizzard game might come out on time. Neither party had fully committed to an official release date, however, and the Irvine, California-based developer had only said that it was "aiming to launch by the end of 2011." Luckily, the only thing more steadfast than Blizzard's lengthy development times is its proclaimed commitment to quality.
"Ultimately, we feel that to deliver an awesome Diablo sequel that lives up to our expectations and yours as well," Morhaime said, "we should take a little more time and add further polish to a few different elements of the game." To aid the extended endeavor, Diablo 3's beta will run longer and accomodate more invitees.
If your gaming tastes incorporate more than highly anticipated role-playing games, you'll likely find some relief in this delay. Now there's more time for Batman, Drake, Ezio, two kinds of modern warfare, Skyrim and -- wait, there's still not enough time, is there?

@b3n I'm sick to death of you people who decide to spout out that you're going to pass on a game because of a stupid internet connection. It could be worse -- consider something atrocious like Games for Windows, or even Ubisoft, but it doesn't change the fact that PEOPLE ARE STILL GOING TO BUY THE GAME.
You're nothing but a drop in the ocean, pal. If you don't like it, move along. Have fun with Torchlight 2, it looks like a great game. If you're intentionally trolling, congratulations, it worked, but it just makes me hate you even more.

I really don't get the hangup with this. The only people who should really have a problem are people who don't have access to fast enough internet, such as those whose only choice for "high speed" is satellite. In Diablo 2, playing single player locked away some items and runewords and there were some items you were virtually never going to see due to the abysmally low drop rates that were designed around multiplayer, for instance the Zod rune has anywhere between a 1:~2.5 million - 1:~6 million drop rate.
The games, at least Diablo 2 and 3, were designed around multiplayer.

Funny that you were downvoted because you stated something that's true. It's dumb to pass on this game because it's an online only game. Online only is the way of the future AND it lets them monitor the game better to prevent cheating. So whatever skip on a game that is going to be a million times better than Torchlight 2.
I played Torchlight and all it did was make me go roll a new character in Diablo 2. It was neat to play a different dungeon crawler but it lacked the polish and refinement of Diablo. I'll prolly pick up Torchlight 2 to hopefully get my mind off D3 a bit but imo there's no way it will compare.

Actually, people will be able to pirate this game anyway, because pirates always find a way. All DRM does is punish people who buy the game, thereby encouraging piracy; Diablo III will be all over Bittorrent a week after release, just wait and see.
I'm almost always connected to the internet, but I'm not buying this game based on principle. If a company is so greedy that it's willing to punish its customers in a vain attempt to increase its already ridiculous profits, I'd be a complete tool to give them my money. All of you who buy this game are telling Blizzactivision that it's ok for them to walk all over you because you aren't going to bother standing up for yourself.

@b3n I agree, actually I have Comcast, and it goes down randomly from 2 minutes to several hours at least 2 times a week. I've had the technicians here several times - new lines in and out - yet it is still a persistent problem. I too will have to miss out on Diablo 3, very hard to enjoy a game when you will be randomly cut off from playing it because your ISP fails.
Yesterday I was replying here on joystick when my internet went down, I called Comcast and the network was busy, after about 20 minutes I got through, I was on the phone on hold back and forth while the were "finding my account" (something about system refreshes on there end) for 27 minutes. When they found my account, they finally 'let me know' that the service in my area was down (as if I didn't know) - They said the problem was being addressed in my area, but was at 0% completion.
2 hours down - That's BS that I cannot play a game offline. DRM wont stop cheating and hackers, look at WoW and the gold sellers that floated around in SW and Org during wotlk ~
This is why I must miss out on one of my favorite games, sad...

I'm going to do you guys a great big favor and answer why having no offline component is a bad idea. After this, I likely won't post on this topic again, as I'll be too busy giggling over the fact that Diablo 3 has been postponed AGAIN. Your tears are delicious by the way. Ahem.
If anything, ANYTHING, happens to Blizzard at all, you will never be able to play your game again. That "masterpiece" you were talking about? Yeah. Gone. Yes, I know Battle.net is still running, you can still get on Diablo 1 and duke it out for cripes sake. However, this also leaves another problem: Should you EVER lose internet for ANY REASON, you will not be able to play your game. Worse yet, they might take on a subscription with this game. Just to make the rage that much stronger.
Honestly, I don't trust Blizzard anymore. I was hyped about the game 2 years ago, and really... well, I just don't care anymore. I've got Torchlight 2 coming out, Dungeon Defenders, and if I ever get REALLY bored, I have plenty of console games to play that I can put in, and, GASP, always have them work so long as I have my console. That's a very novel feature. Like how the PSO servers are dead, yet I can play Ep 1 and 2 on my Gamecube/Wii. Imagine THAT!
There is no reason it should lack a single player. Some people don't WANT to go online and play. Some actually don't play online. I'm sorry that you do and you think it's the only way people should play. You howling, braying, snarling Blizzard fanboys can go shove it. Your game is not perfect, it's going to be an overhyped game that will never live up to the golden pedestal you've put it on, and just like Diablo 2, I'll likely grab the game when it and it's expansions come out in a nice little Battle Chest deal at a much more affordable price.

Seriously, what is with the fricken sense of entitlement that people on the Internet seem to have? Yes, Blizzard makes money. Yes, they will make more money when Diablo 3 comes out. They are a BUSINESS. By definition they are there to make profits. I'm sure whatever you do for a living is charity work for you, and you don't make any money for doing it, right?
If you don't want to play the game, don't. But don't act like you're doing it because you have some kind of moral high-ground to protect.

Meh, people need to calm down and realize that this is likely not the release date for the console version so there is nothing worth getting excited about.

I guess it can still come out "on time", since a date has not been finalized and thus it can't be late.

Hmm, it appears that signing up for battle.net isn't enough to access the Diablo 3 beta. While I knew it would be granted to random users I was unaware that you have to own a game by Blizzard in order to opt in for the Diablo 3 beta. :-(
Considering the only games on their site I see are WoW and Starcraft both of which I have zero interest in I guess I just have to wait for the release.
Does anyone know if the games in the legacy section apply toward getting to opt in? I'll buy Diablo 2 in order to be able to opt in. I always wanted to play it anyway.
