Sure it does, it kills resale values. Effectively you're stuck with the game you buy forever cause no one will want a game that lacks funtionality.

You mean all you get for your gaming dollars is....A GAME?!?!

Doesn't SONY know that they have to support our secondary market? We should be able to have our cake AND eat it, too! We deserve a big slice of their profits. Those greedy jerks. It's like they think they should get paid for creating games. The nerve of them!

I've three PS3's in my house. I actively game on each of them depending on my situation. That I'll only be able to play multiplayer on one of them is a pretty big f*ckin' annoyance.

I'm sure since you game on all three of them you can easily just download the file from PSN onto all 3 of them. Oh hey you can online MP on all of them, and all accounts on all of them.

@Zippon remove your tongue from Sony's ass for a second there fanboy.. Just because I buy something, doesn't mean I should have to choose to keep forever or throw it away, if a game isn't worth anything used, then it isn't worth much new. You buy a game brand spanking new, and you end up hating it, god forbid you sell it to someone else who might enjoy it, as well as make some money back.

I wont buy the sh*t anymore, it was a nightmare with MK9, guess I'll be buying multi-plats or an xbox.

@Haizeus you can share PSN account on up to five PS3s, thats what I do, just download the pass on the other account and play on whichever other account you use on that PS3. This is why I dont complain much about this. At least this is what I did with Mortal Kombat.

Actually game will be worth $10 less, so if you buy great game for $59.99 and use it for few weeks you can probably sell it for around $35-45. So it is fine.

That's the issue I have with it. Better yet, the Uncharted 3 beta had splitscreen functionality with multiple accounts. Ex: Mine and my son's accounts were both logged in playing the beta splitscreen simultaneously.

So how is that going to work now, or is that function now taken out?

Seriously dude, screw you, and screw these companies too. You can sit around and cry and whine and scream to the high heavens that these people deserve all this cash and whatnot. This also kicks other services in the rods too, like RENTALS. They're effectively trying to destroy the market of Rentals and Trade-Ins.

Besides, they're still charging you $60 a pop, rather than using this as an incentive to decrease prices, so they're having their cake and eating it too. I'm sick of people like you going on and on that the developer deserves all this money, when it's the producer that ends up getting all the money anyway. THE PEOPLE WHO CREATED THE GAME ARE THE LOWEST ON THE FOOD CHAIN.

Besides, did you know you can get online on the PC with Doom and play others? Yes, you can! That's the power of the community, and it's servers. With these updates, the games will likely lose servers and functionality in a few years, forcing you to buy the next game. But hey, if you want to ruin gaming for everyone, by all means, support this...

@Varia Suit you can't compare a car and video games , video games is a hobby , and a car is used to get you to point a to point b. dealerships add extra cost to every thing , power locks , power windows , cd player , everything. so why can't game developers add a 10$ online pass so people buy the game used they'll have to pay to use the online severs. you still have access to the whole game but the online part.

@Raffi256 Game companys make no money on secondary sales. So why should they support it? Maybe if they made a percentage off of trade ins, but the way it is right now, they have no real reason to care. I dont blame them really, some kid gets bored with a game after a week, trades it in for something new and then they sale it again at near full price, making nothing but profit off of something they had no part in making? Sounds pretty messed up to me.

I always love it when someone shows their massive ignorance by comparing used games (virtually unlimited lifetime) to something that wears down with each use (like a car).

Tell you what, how about they get rid of the $10 pass but build game discs so that they have a limited number of plays on them? And each time you play, the graphics get a little worse--less textures, more jaggies, etc. Certain levels disappear completely after a few more plays. And the ability to save or adjust options disappears after that.

THEN we can compare it to buying a used car. You maroon.

The justifications here are laughable. "What if I hate the game?' "Developers don't make any of this money!" etc. The simple fact is that games last pretty much forever. We can resell a product indefinitely and provide new users with an experience that is IDENTICAL to a new product. This is why used games sales (and yes, rentals) are such a problem. And why publishers are taking steps to curb things. If you are so worried about whether you will like a game, read one of the DOZENS of reviews, watch the HUNDREDS of gameplay videos on youtube, or try the DEMO. B*tching and whining about how you have to buy it or rent it first is ridiculous. You have so many other options to research your purchase.

No, no! Don't tell them that. I've got a used car I wanted to sell to the Joystiq commenters. It's just as good as new, I swear, and I only want 90% of the value that I initially paid. What a great deal for you!

In all seriousness, we can't know the actual machinations behind the scenes here. Yes it sucks that prices are going up, but if it's a $10 online pass instead of $70 new game, I'd rather that $10 comes out of the second-hand buyer's wallet than mine (I buy almost all my games new). I can't say for sure that this is what's happening, but it's definitely plausible.

A $60 game today is cheaper (in absolute value) than a $60 game 5 years ago even, and costs have only gone up, so it's not surprising that publishers need more money. I know that not all profits go to the developers, but not all money spent on developers turns into profit. I doubt these companies are trying to completely alienate their fans by0 just arbitrarily raising prices, as they no don't understand the Laffer curve pretty well.

+1 for you, sir! Exactly so! :-)

People are playing games, identical to new ones, and giving their profits to used resellers rather than companies that MAKE games. Whether or not additional profits go to publishers or developers is debatable. Whether the profits that go to Gamestop go anywhere else is a fact (they DON'T).

Even if the publisher makes all the extra money and developers don't have some kind of profit share (unlikely), it's the publishers who then go on to publish NEW titles. They put the money out there for another game, maybe by the same studio. Maybe by a different studio. But the money still goes into GAMES, not into paying the rent for your local strip mall reseller.

TRUTH!

@Kbb81tn I'm ASSUMING they aren't idiots and the main account has the online pass, while another guest account can play and enjoy it split screen. It's like what Xbox does with live. I don't own an Xbox, but I can play on live with my friends as long as I'm split screen.

People want to play games. Companies need to make money. I understand the sentiment that if you're in college and work part-time, sometimes you gotta buy used and this kind of thing sucks for you. I also understand the idea that that's not Sony's problem.

Well it is Sony's problem when customers with lower sources of income decide not to buy their games. And with rumors of new consoles being developed and PC gaming being so far ahead of current-gen, this is just one more line on the list of reasons to not roll with Sony next gen.

There is also adds the issue with each game having a single online tag now. This damages renting games, borrowing games, even siblings having games.

For instance game A for PS3 seemed interesting but you wanted to rent it and try out the online experience before purchasing the game. This is no longer an option. Another point where friends loaned each other games its now isolated to just one gamer tag. And with siblings if two brothers wanted to play a game online with their gametag they both would need to purchase the game now.

Companies yearn to make a profit and now customers will have to pay that price in one form or another for it.

I'm just not convinced by that argument. It's the same argument as "I'm just gonna pirate this and if I like it I'll buy it" and "We need abortion because of rape and incest". Sure, it may be valid in 1/1000 of one percent of cases but it's not something that you should establish precedent or base policy around.

I understand the idea behind that people want to share games with friends, but again, Sony just lost a game sale. It seems like a smarter business decision to me that your friend borrows the game, loves the single player, and is so enamored of the experience that he buys the game to play multiplayer with you. Why does Sony have an obligation to provide for any other scenario?

For the people who dont want to spend THOUSANDS on a gaming rig - and more each year to keep it 'next-gen', consoles are their only way.

Most people who enjoy their games, buy them on release anyway, so whats the big deal?

Reading comprehension is your friend. The point is that I don't know many people that rent games to decide if they're going to buy them. None, actually. I don't even know of those people except in hypothetical arguments. I'm sure that it happens every once in a while. But obviously not enough to have any bearing on Sony's decision to have an online pass.
