Thank God for Steam sales... Otherwise I'd be broke.

A little patience and you can pick up 5-8 games @ $50.

Mind you, not Forza Motorsport, Dark Souls, Resistance, Gears or Uncharted...

I think part of the problem is that we had such a drought of worthwhile "must buy" games previously, that with this onslaught of Q3 and Q4 games being released almost week after week... well, it's a wonder I wasn't bank/card flagged for the frequent purchases!

As for FORZA4... there goes that upcoming weekend! XD

No one says you have to buy games the day and date they come out. If you've been sucked into that habit by the industry, then of course your wallet is taking a beating - and so is your free time. Not to mention, how many games can anyone actually complete, much less savor, if they buy them all by the release schedule?

I'm not bashing the game; this is just a general thing: Just because there isn't any major flaws in a game doesn't mean it's necessarily perfect-score worthy.

That's bound to be true for plenty of cases, but if there's something holding it back from being that perfect score it's generally reason enough to make at least some mention of it in the review.

When you get close to 100% for a review anything at all can cause it to not get that final % so it would make sense to point out why It didn't get it.

Same as with school; a 4 or 4.5 is for your good students, and the 5 is for your brilliant A+ top honors student. There are good games, there are great games, and then there are special games. I think 4.5 is good enough.

This is the entire reason Joystiq avoided scores for so long. It was a sad day when they finally succumbed to this practice.

Your example just reinforces the reasoning for my question.
If you get a 4.5/5 in school its because you didn't get a question right/didn't do something well enough/etc... which is shown to you.
There's nothing in the review which is written as a negative point to the game, hence there's reasoning for it not getting the full 5/5 which the review doesn't explain.

If we're continuing with the school analogy, some teachers will only award 100% to those who go above and beyond expectations. So perhaps while Forza 4 didn't do anything "wrong" perse, it also didn't provide that little bit of unknown extra special sauce that the reviewer was hoping for.

That may not be indicative of other 5 star reviews, but y'know the old saying about subjectivity and all

That's actually a ton less than I expected.

Don't get me wrong, I still can't wait to play it. But most of this is just Forza 3 again.

And I think it's lame if you can finish your entire career with one car. You should have to learn to drive different drivetrains (RWD, FWD, AWD) and different styles (momentum racing, etc.) to finish.

The review also doesn't really say anything about the computer AI, it doesn't talk about the breadth of races (which were very broad in Forza 3, I wouldn't expect any less in Forza 4).

Also, an Alfa Romeo Guileta isn't an "E-Class" car, it's an "E segment" car. An E-Class is a Mercedes model name.

Boy are we picky, aren't we?
But I actually agree with you about drivetrains though. The last racing sim I've played was GT4 on the PS2 (and boy do I suck at it) and changing cars and learning their differences played a major card in keeping me going back to the game.

First, its a 2 year update to a great game, adding more than enough to the table to make up for a release (hence nobody giving it a low score for being "more of the same")

Second, Being able to use the same car for the entirety of your career only proves how true to detail the game is. Have you ever seen a RWD or AWD honda civic at a meet? they do exist, and they intrigue a lot of people. This game doesnt give you artificial limitations. If hobbyists can do it in the real world, they should be able to do it in the game as well.

Third, people have been referring to the segments has both segments and classes since GT1, knowing that there is a Mercedes E-Class does not make you sound like you know cars. Thats like blurting out, "forza 3 wasn't part of the forza series because a 3 series is a type of BMW."

@SmilinGoat I agree it sounds like it brings enough to the table. That's what I said I can't wait to play it.

You talk about drivetrain swaps, first that's ridiculous. I know they exist in the game and in real life, but an RWD Civic isn't a Civic anymore. It's just a Civic body with other stuff under it. You'd have to change the entire drivetrain and all the suspension mounts, there's little left but a Civic badge.

And regardless of whether he did drivetrain swaps, it doesn't matter. You still should have to learn how to drive other kinds of cars, smaller cars. Prototype (Le Mans) or open wheel cars. If you can finish your racing career with a single car, it's not a very full experience in terms of racing.

Segments same as classes? You're talking nonsense.

They're segments.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_Car_Segment

An E segment car is never referred to as an E-Class car. Especially not in Forza where there is a separate concept of a car class based upon performance.

I'm still baffled by this review. He doesn't talk about the features of the game like rewind. We heard a few weeks ago about the car clubs. Nothing about that is mentioned.

I actually mostly agree. Based on the review, there doesn't seem like much to differentiate this from Forza 2 and 3. I'm sure it's still great, but I would have liked to read more about the improvements from 3, rather than the quality of the game overall, which as most Forza fans already know is pretty much a given.

Oh, and there's no way you can go through the *entire* career with the same car. I don't care what kind of upgrades you get, you won't be able to take a production car up to the level of R1-4.

@spin cycle I agree with you, Drive swaps aren't common place and cost way more that it's worth. It's silly to think you can just throw what ever Drive train you want in any given car and it's going to work. It just simply isn't. This is coming from a 10 year car builder. It's things like this that separate Sim racers from Arcade racers.

@spin cycle You're such an idiot. He's talking about the PI system! You know, the one that separates the cars in classes: F, E, D, C, B, A, S, R3, R2, R1, X.

The Giuletta is an E-class car in the game.

@(Unverified) I agree, a friend of mine who swore behind GT got into Forza 3 and just fell in love with the game. When GT5 came out, he put on his GT fan hat and went to town on it only to come to me and say that Forza 3 was ultimately the better of the two.

Although to be fair, he did say that GT5 did some things right but ultimately Forza 3 was just much more accessible and less frustrating than GT5, I think the rewind feature clutched that since he really hated that he'd be in a race and at the last minute goof up and just screw over what time he sunk into it.

@(Unverified) Yes, that's why Gtplanet exploded after spec II was detailed. Clearly no one gives a shit. Now if no one cared, GT wouldn't be brought up anymore. And that's just not true. Forza may be doing things right for Forza fans, but Gt fans not so much.

I feel the same way too about pit stops, in GT in my case. It irks me to pull up, just to see my car magically float and hear wrenching/wirring sound effects as my car is being repaired. A little animation clip of the car being fixed would be nice. :)
