Nice! I've been looking forward to this for sometime now, it's going to be a bit awkward picking this up at a MW3 launch, but so worth it.

@JoeSway I'm pretty sure it will be awkward alright, but not for you. It'll be awkward for the armchair general manchildren lined up in the aisles to see someone who actually has good taste in games and is trying to save the industry from rehashed shooters.

I don't understand... myself. I love the so-called "Metroidvania" subgenre. I downloaded Cave Story some three years ago, "before it was cool", but I didn't quite get into the game. I've played for some 30 minutes, dropped it aside and never picked it up again. But recently, with the batch of remakes, rereleases, reharshes and remixes, all I hear is how awesome a game in my favorite 2D gameplay style, that I felt no connection with, is.

I can't help myself but wonder:
1) What am I missing?
2) Why I found it dull the first time around?
3) WTF IS WRONG WITH ME?!

Well, that's my rant, thanks for reading.

@TheShaper Wow, you're wondering why the first 30 minutes of a game is dull.

I'm sorry there is no hope for you, give me your gaming consoles and such.

I appreciate your sarcasm, but the first hour or so of a game is really important. It sets the tone. I don't have the patience to go through endless tutorials before jumping into the actual game anymore (not that this is the case), and hardly will give a game a chance when it's the case. Tutorials can be interesting (Fallout 3, Gears of War), plain dull (countless games) or inexistent (Limbo, Cave Story). Limbo was awesome from the get-go, so why can't Cave Story be the same?

I guess you failed to notice the quotation marks surroundingthe sentence, which sometimes, just sometimes, means that one is being sarcastic.

But I see where this is going, no one is taking my comment as I originally meant, so it's a lost battle.

I was really excited about this, before they decided to delay the release until smack in the middle of everything else (I mean, seriously: Uncharted 3, MW3, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, Halo:CE, Mario 3DS, MGS:HD, et. al.) I wish this game the best of luck, it looks great, but there's no way it's even going back on my radar until at least the middle of next spring.

I think it's just to quiet 3DS naysayers from wondering if there's anything to play in this onslaught of games coming out between now and February 2012.

Just pick it up again. 30 minutes isn't really giving it much of a chance. It's got a cool weapon system and bosses as well as a charming story and soundtrack, but it takes maybe an hour to kick off in full.

Wow, finally a considerative, intelligent reply. Thanks. I've been willing to do it, for a while, but was lacking the incentive.

@baby sea tuna
For some reason your comment got slashed but I got to read it. You know what's worse? I've been over 1up today and things over there are even worse. I don't know what happened, I used to like their featured articles so much, now it's just a bunch of biased, one-sided bullshit.

@TheShaper Same here man, I'd also recommend going further than that half-hour. It's one of those games that get better the better you get at it, and the better your character gets with time. Once you're halfway the point of becoming a powerhouse, the game achieves a perfect balance between fun and challenge that must be experienced.

I fully agree with this, I just can't bring myself to buy it on WiiWare...

I never played cave story, but when I saw they were remaking it I decided that this would be the first version I play. Looks like that was a good choice.

After months of my 3DS doing nothing, it's nice to know that I'll probably be playing it more than any other platform this month.

God damn it Joystiq, stop perpetuating these useless "casual" and "core/hardcore" labels! You're either a gamer or your not. End of story.

@tendoboy1984

And pixels have nothing to do with how "hardcore" a game is. It's just an artistic choice.

"Those new graphics are there to sell the game to non-"core" gamers who see 2D art as archaic"

According to JC, they do, which is tendoboy complaint. Some people are here just to try and "pwn" others, don't they?

I want to play this, but the 3D version is a bit pricier. Is it really worth the extra money for the new version or would I be okay with the old?

@NeuroOmega Cave Story is freeware on the PC. Honestly Cave Story in its pixelated glory is very easy on the eyes to begin with. I can't see how the 3D version could possibly be a better alternative unless you already are a fan of the game.

You have a few choices on playing this game now.

-Pixel's original version (free; on Windows then ported to OSX, Linux, PSP, etc)
-WiiWare ($12; has updated graphics and music as options, extra playable character, boss rush)
DSiWare ($10; lacking some bonuses from Wii version, but has a time attack mode)
-Cave Story+ ($10; now on Mac App Store for OSX and soon Steam for Windows. Has the Wii features plus a new stage)
-Cave Story 3D ($40; has new polygonal visuals, new areas, and possibly a playable Prinny)

Any way you go, you can't go wrong.

I was pretty excited that the 3DS will finally get a good ORIGINAL game, or so I thought, but this was just another remake =/

Oh well, since I never played the original i never knew of, I will pick this up since it looks great. But the 3DS seriously needs more NEW games and not remakes besides...Super Mario 3D land...

I wish the standard pricing for 3DS games was cheaper. I just can't bring myself to pay full price for the re-release, since I already spent $10 on the 2d version on DSiware.

Cave Story's original visual style has nothing to do with the Western "indie game scene." Like La-Mulana, it was just meant to be reminiscent of the games the developer enjoyed as a child. I don't want to nitpick but I'm just bothered by the indie this, indie that these days.
