Been looking at this, but I still can't do the 3DS until the redesign. Short review, though. I guessing it was written as the handheld recharged to a playable state.

He's gonna hold out for the PSP Vita 3001 Go model that forces you to abandon the media format and repurchase all of your games.

Nice to see there are Joystiq readers with common sense, after all. I, too, will wait for the redesign with the second analog stick incorporated.

@PatientJ Good choice, I've had nothing but reget for my decision to get the 3DS after the price drop, and even a new Mario game won't make the feeling go away completely.

Maybe I'm just too in love with the DS Lite, but I just can't seem to get over the miserable battery life of the 3DS: the little sucker even briskly runs through juice when it's in sleep mode (with wirelss turned OFF).

@ALL ABOVE COMMENTS: Why downvote these comments? It is too bad to wait till a redesign? In all honesty neither the 3DS nor the VITA can replace at the moment my DSLite and my PSP 3000.

It's not so much that we downvote for people waiting for a redesign.
Some of us just honestly don't believe the 3DS will get a second analog redesign. ...for sure a new 3DS will come out, possibly one with a better battery, but some of us aren't sure that a second analog that's still just an OPTION for every game it'll be used for will be built-in with it.

...what happens if there never is a second analog built-in? Do you just not purchase it ever and stick with the Vita?

What if it gets redesigned to be sleeker and with better battery life? With no second analog sticks if Nintendo intends to push developers to use the touchscreen and gyroscope more?

I downvote as my opinion of: I doubt it'll get a second analog in a redesign, not downvoting for waiting. Waiting is fine.

But I swear if somehow enough of the gamer community were to not purchase a 3DS, discourage casual gamers from ever touching it, and sales show and Nintendo just asks "WTFhappened??" to their customers... all because of this constant talk of "INEVITABLE SECOND STICK BUILT-IN REMAKE" (that never comes): I'd be ticked off.

If a giant pile of great games come out even after a redesign, and people STILL hold off on buying a 3DS: That's messed up. That gets rid of the entire "Oh we'd buy it if it had more games" argument.

Well, if we're going to get "Internet Serious" over this, I just mention the second analog since it seems like a fairly obvious reason, but I plan on buying whatever the second model is. I was happy with the games available for the first PSP, so I didn't mind buying it right away, but that Slim was much nicer. I did wait on the DS lite, but only because the original DS was ugly as sin and I just didn't care enough at the time. I'm waiting for a few more games I want (such as a Zelda built from the ground up for the system) and, of course, a nicer looking model with (hopefully) better battery life. Whatever it is, I am buying the next model, and hopefully a Zelda edition one. Also waiting for the second version of the Vita.

I don't understand all the people complaining about the current 3DS design.
Yes, the battery life is relatively short but there are fairly cheap ways to increase it. And quite frankly, this would still only be an issue on a road trip or airplane.
The design to start is at least on par with the DS lite which was very nice. It's not like nintendo were assholes and make the screen really dark only so they could improve it on later systems.
My only complaint about it is the placement of the Dpad which is very difficult to use. Thankfully most of the 3DS games are using the analog, and I bought the system for 3DS games!!

Great review Joystiq but I think its time to up your ratings from 5 stars to 10. I have seen a ton of 4-1/2 star ranks in the past month alone. They are all good games but i would like to see a more distinguishable line

@shinjix2 I think the trap most reviewers fall into is comparing it to games of last gen or god forbid their youth. Most games are amazing compared to games 10 years ago and I believe most reviews tend to come from a place comparing the two.

@shinjix2 So comments under reviews can break out into fanboy fights when one game gets an 8.9 and another gets a 9.0? What's the point? 4.5 stars out of 5 means it's a great game. If it got a 4.3 or a 4.7, guess what — still a great game. That's the point of a review -- not to tell you whether a 3DS platformer is .2 points better than an FPS on the PS3. I hate that shit and wish the 10-point scales would go down to 4 or 5.

What they are saying is: "If you like this type of game at all, you'll want to play it."

Although, I do think that explanation should be the 5-star score, since we can all agree that saying everyone should play a certain game is completely ludicrous. Clearly not everyone likes certain genres, so the across-the-board "Yes." 5-star score is inherently false.

Anyway, excellent review JC. Looking forward to picking up this game next year when the price drops.

@shinjix2 Using half stars, it's already a ten point scale. A half point difference on a scale of one to ten shouldn't be significant to you.

@shinjix2 I hit "submit" too early. :P A ten point scale with half points is actually a twenty point scale. Do you really want to be the type of person who sees a significant difference between a game that gets 18/20 and one that gets 19/20? Game reviews are subjective, after all. The reviewer's score isn't your score anyway.

No that's not what he is saying. Joystiq should increase their review scores to 10, in increments of .5

1
1.5
2
2.5
3
3.5
4
4,5
6
6.5
7
7.5
8
8.5
9
9.5
10

Like that, see?

8/10 is the same as 4/5, and 9/10 is the same as 4.5/5.

I think they just mean that a game can only ever score 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 or 100. So there is no score possible between 80 & 90 or 90 & 100 etc and you end up with games being lumped together with the same score. I'd rather they pick 5 categories with a max of 20 points each and rate in each category accordingly.

@shinjix2 but most "out of 10" reviews never dare to go below a 7. It's a waste. What is the difference between a 5 and a 6 point review? 5 stars is the perfect rating system.

@LittleMofreaky: Mostly because we are conditioned, at least here in America, to see '70' as average because of our scoring system on tests in school and college. And most games really don't fall under the 'absolutely terrible' banner, so it's rare to see games get scored beneath that, as most games end up at least average.

That's what he's saying though. In most grading systems the numbers 1-6 are about equal, a bad game will get a six, or maybe even a five, and both would be considered, like you said, "absolutely terrible". That's the problem though! A five on a ten point scale is average, not bad.

Yep, along with the "the Boomerang Suit, whose utility is obvious (it plays clips from the 1992 Eddie Murphy movie)".

Kidding of course, but at least RPG is available through VC. It's part of my "damnit, justify your launch purchase of this thing" line-up to Nintendo naysayers.
