Well, that's another 150 million people that can now take the piss out of the concept of games being art.

@Esposch

No kidding, these "games" piss me off to no end, but it's been difficult to pin down why.

The best reason I could find is that they feel like charlatanry. The authors usually admit that these games have no specific meaning or message they want to convey and that it's the spectator's job to come up with one, but that feels like an excuse to make something vague and weird without much effort and get praise for it. A snake oil salesman gives vague promises and deceives people for money, an artist's currency is praise and they are willing to deceive people to get it too.

This is just my opinion, but I realize I feel exactly the same about the people who make these games and the people who praise them as I feel about cold readers who claim they can communicate with ghosts and the people who believe them.

I came here for some news for a "Tales of" game. I was disappointed. And I have a feeling even if this article was about a new Tales of game from Bandai Namco, I would still be disappointed because of localization.

Is this another Tales of Tales game like The Path that's barely a game and more of just a really pretentious sightseeing tour?

That is exactly what this is, yes. I did kind of like The Path, but then I bought this and Fatale during some Steam sale or other, and now I realize that Tale of Tales aren't really interested in fun gameplay, but rather in being pretentiously clever.

Games don't need to be "fun" to be enjoyed, i mean The Expendables was a fun film, but it wasn't better than The Shining, which isn't, The Halo novels are fun books, but they weren't better than say Orwell's 1984.

Also i was hoping to see the old lady die in the vid... does that mean there is something wrong with me?

@Garr

nothing wrong with you, you just got bored, like any person who pays for the garbage that tale tales do , of course "disguised" as art, or another way to say: "we have no idea of how to make a good game, but we create weird stuff and tell it as art because f**k it that´s why, somebody is going to pay for it and we the old art excuse don´t need to explain anything about a game that neither us know what´s about".

This looks very poor. I'll put my money on another game instead.

Wow, this is what I hate about videogames becoming "art". Don't get me wrong I can see how this can influence developers but, artsy games just sucks in mi opinion, they're dull and boring. People like it because they're pretty to look at.

@BlackRoyMustang Agreed, my problem with artistic games is that the actual game portion almost never adds anything to the experience. Unless the game mechanics serve any other purpose other than to classify it "a game" then it was probably better off being artwork/a movie etc.

People often wage the same arguments about legitimate art, but a great deal of "art" video games are far too enamored with themselves. They're like a 16 year old on Deviant Art that's certain their portfolio of "Furry US Presidents" belongs in the Louvre. They prey on everyone's resentment of the "establishment" (and the topic of video games & art is fertile ground for delusions of grandeur and charlatanism).

There are a handful of games that I do consider art, but not a single one of them made it their goal to BE art.

A good example of an "art" video game: Braid.
There are other examples, but I just love that game.

@Colorfuljosh

Tale Of Tales don't class what they make as games, in face they aim to remove as much of the game elements as they can from their work. The prefer the term 'not-game' for their work. While people might not like what they make I'm glad they do because they push at the boundaries of what is considered a 'good' experience. They annoy me greatly but I love them and think the Graveyard is a classic game which has influenced the development of games like Uncharted 2.

I think it is time to abandon the term 'art game' and start moving towards a deeper exploration of what movements are in the 'art game' scene. So things like 'not games' and the 'proceduralist' movement that Ian Bogost talks about in his latest book which includes games like Braid, Passage and The Marriage can be talked about in bigger terms than just 'Are Games Art?' - a question that has been answered many times. By moving beyond the term 'art game', the artform can truly grow.

The first two minutes of this video reminded me of that movie Stay Alive, the one where if you died in the video game you died in real life.
