My brain almost exploded until I read and understood the context of "retirement".

Make those projects you want, good Sir!

I had a heart attack where I saw retiring in the title and Miyamoto as the header picture.

I was about to be one sad ass panda when I initially saw the headline with Miyamoto and retiring. I can say for many of us gamers here on Joystiq Miyamoto is like a father of gaming for us.

Here's hoping you can shine once more with your abstract creative mind Miyamoto-san

So basically he's done managing development and is now just straight up developing?

I can live with that.

This is fantastic news! It sounds as though he will be taking on a role in the company to stimulate his imagination, rather than getting burned out in the role he is retiring from.

The end of an era. No doubt I'll like his new projects, but it just won't be the same not having him in the lead of Nintendo's best games. Hopefully whoever steps up to fill his shoes will really fill his shoes, although those are some BIG shoes to fill.

If Wikipedia is accurate, Steel Diver was the last one he designed, though he's produced several others since Wii Music and has had some say in even more.

He's passing Zelda on to Aonuma, who's already stated he wants to change core aspects of the franchise in the future and make it different from current Zelda games.

Change core concepts?!

It better be freaking amazing, or Skyward Sword may be my last Zelda game ever. D:

The "core concepts" have already been changed. Aonuma's had Zelda since Majora's Mask. Capcom was outsourced for a good number of the later Zeldas, too.

Ocarina of Time was the last Miyamoto Zelda.

@EIranzer

He only made small changes since then he said. In the GI interview he says he wants to look at making bigger changes now. He wants to really make it into his own Zelda. I guess he wants to design the game his way from the ground up instead of trying to follow in the footsteps of others.

He's done such a great job shaping the current development landscape at Nintendo and teaching many of the current producers and directors how it's done. His influence will live on for years, even as he's working on the smaller projects and leaving things like Mario and Zelda to others.

Thank God. I want both Miyamoto and Koji Kondo to contribute more actual work and less telling people what to do. I remember him saying that he was going to take a more active role in the development of the next Zelda, and I was estastic; he hasn't been as involved with development since Ocarina of Time. A little worried now that he doesn't want a big project through (which Zelda is).

Miyamoto can almost single handedly be credited with saving the gaming industry. He is a legend, and we all hope that he continues making great games.

Keep it up, Shiggy.

When he was directing games (1981-1998) as a true game developer, he pretty much schooled the industry on how to make a platformer (donkey kong), sidecrolling platformer (super mario), action rpg (zelda), 3d platformer (mario 64), and 3d action adventure (zelda:oot). After each of those games, there was about a 2+ year wait before the other developers integrated the mechanics (usually not as well) into their own games.

If you actually look at the competition for these games at the time of release, it's hilarious how much better his games were than the competition. For example, what was the most popular game of the same 3d adventure genre when Zelda:OoT came out? Tomb Raider. try controlling that game right now and see how you like it.

If he's "retiring" to go back to that, then this is some of the best news I've heard in a while. I hope Kondo takes the cue.

@aaron barton Kondo did a few songs in skyward sword. but the OST from other composers is amazing as well. The older Zelda songs are so catchy because of nostalgia, and because they're far simpler. simpler songs are easier to get stuck in the head so people automatically call them "Better". "Friday" is a good example...most people hate it but it actually sold very well...
