1490 games. One thousand four-hundred and ninety.

If you played one per week, it would take you 29 years to get through all of them.

Whoever wins that prize should go and have a super-massive gifting thread. Or even better, make a lottery and have 80% of the profit go to a charity.

It's more complicated than 'Here are some games for less money than usual' so I legitimately don't give a ****. I use my Holmes-like deductive reasoning for important things like work, turning buying games into another elaborate Valve-troll doesn't interest me.

What's so complicated? You click a link, it shows a list of things you can do to potentially earn free games, and you do them.

Or you could just buy games and ignore the potential to earn free shit from playing games...

You sound like you're complaining just to complain.

Yup, discounts are confusing.

Nobody is putting a gun to your head and making you earn the achievements to get bonus free shit, that's just for those who want to do it.

Yes, this would be great, but their servers are so overloaded at the moment it's mostly inaccessible.

Would have preferred that press held off on reporting the sale, since that will just had more congestion to Steam.

But what can you do.

I refuse to buy any games this year! I have enough unplayed games on my list to last nearly 3 years at the rate of one game per week.

Seriously. My Steam Library is full.

So now I'm faced with the choice of buying games for the computer I plan to buy in February, HOPING said plans don't fall through, or waiting and buying games later, after I have a new computer, but at almost certainly higher prices.

Dammit

Dear Steam,

Knowing that you'd be getting a flood of people popping over to check out the magnitude of your yearly sale, you decided to not prepare for the traffic because...?

@drewciferpike They know you will just be spamming F5 until you can get in? How do you think they could prepare for 5 mil+ people all spamming the same page at the same time? You have an hour long log in queue or somethin?

I'm pretty sure it's nearly impossible to economically prepare for such an event on such a high profile sale and service. Just the sheer amount of numbers and logistics to it all.

@drewciferpike I dig what you're all saying, but I find it hard to believe that the smart people at Valve responsible for cleaning and maintaining the pipes of the interwebs couldn't come up with something relatively inexpensive to help ease the first 6-8 hours of an event like this. I know cost is an issue, but it's also one of scale; it wouldn't have to be a permanent solution, just something to lube the first entrants, so to say.

Google still gets more traffic in an hour than Valve will get all day, so it's not "impossible" - they just need to buy more servers. After today, they should have the money for it.

I never said it was "impossible". I said "economically impossible". For goodness sakes people. Reading comprehension 101.

I love how you think buying servers is just easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Not to mention costs for maintaining additional servers. If they do have their own servers to begin with.

@Azurist I agree, I am enjoying the Codemasters pack I got in the Autumn sale (F1 2011 and Dirt 3 for $33.99) and was hoping to see that offer again to get for a friend for Christmas but both of those games combined would be $62 even with their sale prices.
