'Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition' koming to konsoles February 28

Warner Bros. has officially announced Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition, which will include all previously released downloadable content for the critically acclaimed fighter.
The bundle features all character DLC (including dream master Freddy Krueger), the Mortal Kombat: Songs Inspired by the Warriors album, and the 1995 Mortal Kombat film through PSN or Xbox Live Zune Marketplace. There are also 15 Klassic Skins and three Klassic Fatalities for Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Reptile.
The Komplete Edition was outed in early December, when the British rating board gave it a mid-February launch. Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition will be available February 28 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

So...let's take a look at this trend.
The bigger the initial release "Collector's edition" of a game (in this case a full arcade stick), the greater the content of the inevitable "GOTY edition" is later.
So...by this logic, games like Gears of War 3 and Skyrim will be seeing 4-disc GOTY editions by end of 2012 or early 2013.

That's it. Unless it's from Nintendo, Konami or Square-Enix... all big release games are going to be a wait-for-GOTY-edition affair for me.
No more day-1 purchases from Capcom, EA or Warner Bros Interactive, especially.
(Seems to be a western vs Japanese thing, though Capcom, a Japanese developer, is probably worse than all western devs in this regard.)

@EIranzer - Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't recall EA doing too many "complete" releases with DLC.
The only one I can think of is Bad Company 2 and even with that one, it just contained the minor DLC. It never got a release with the big expansion.
P.S. I don't count Mass Effect 2 because it only got the complete release on PS3 because it came to that platform, a year later.

@EIranzer i second that! i am absolutely done supporting any game at launch unless it's a game like Dark Souls which is all game at launch and gives you an incentive for getting it early. I'm sorry Street Fighter x Tekken but your going to have to wait till December or possibly 2013 for me to buy you.

Exactly I am done and done with day one purchases. Basically game companies counter used game sales with DLC. This in turns makes me counter the games DLC by waiting for their eventual "GoTY" version that includes all the DLC. I got myself a fine backlog that I can wait for the game for a year.

I would say that I regret having just picked the game up during the pre-Christmas sales, but considering that it was half price, is the best fighting game I've played in years, and isn't a Capcom product, honestly, I'm having a difficult time feeling offended.
Also, I happen to have 400 microsoft points left over from getting my Arkham City dlc, which new fighter should I buy? Or should I save it for something else?
Help my Joystiq, you're my only hope.

I have no regrets buying MK at launch and the Kombat Pass, and the Skins. It is an awesome game that deserved my money. If you haven't bought it this version deserves your money.

Agreed. I got the game around July or August for $30. Paying $15 for the fighters and $5 for the costumes (I KNOW that was a stupid purchase, paying for on disc DLC and all that, and I'll never do it again), but I got all that for $50 altogether. The Komplete edition will probably be $40 at best, if not $50. So, for the same price, I basically got the game earlier.
I guess missing out on the soundtrack sucks, but I've got both Mortal Kombat movies on DVD. I don't need/want a digital copy taking up my space.

It's not "Komplete" until it has playable bosses, a theater mode for the story cinematics, and Nekropoils entries for the DLC characters. Otherwise, I'll refer it to the "MK9: Paid-for, yet still half-assed edition"
NRS has an unending habit of "updating" their MK games with incomplete additions.

I concur, and I wholeheartedly agree with your complete wish list.
Looking back...
From MK3 to Ultimate MK3 we got:
-Scorpion, Jade, Kitana, and Reptile right off the bat (also Rain and Noob Saibot in the 16-bit versions)
-Ermac, Mileena, and Classic Sub-Zero as secret characters
-2 vs 2 player controlled matches (granted, I know available by default in the newer games, just stating for value-added purposes)
-New moves for some characters.
-New stages
-Brutalities
-Playable boss characters
MK 9 to MK9 Komplete we get:
-4 characters, whom we had to pay for in the vanilla version
-15 skins, some of which were free to begin with
- an unofficial soundtrack which isn't even used in the game
- a bargain bin movie (I still like the movie though. Conversely, I try to wipe Annihilation from my memory).
Blah!

@Ultima You made a few errors.
UMK3 (aside from the crappy 16-bit home versions) didn't have Brutalities or playable bosses. Those were introduced formally in Trilogy.
UMK3 was also incomplete in the sense that the new characters didn't even have complete finishing move lists. Ever try Classic Sub-Zero's 2nd fatality in UMK3? He didn't even have one!
The female ninja hit collision was so glitchy that you couldn't even start a combo from a jump-in punch against them. The 2nd hit would whiff.
Boon and crew are HORRIBLE when it comes to upgrading titles, as they create problems that weren't initially there. Don't EVEN get me started on the MK4>MK Gold transition.

Necropolis for the DLC characters would be cool but I guess there's always Youtube.
Playable bosses? Really? I don't even like fighting them in the arcade mode most of the time, I don't need to fight Shao Kahn EVERY SINGLE ONLINE MATCH!!! That's gotta be the worst idea I've heard in a while.

Judging from the info, the Komplete Edition should be kompatible with the original release, as it would only kontain DLCs and no new kombatants/arenas/etc.

This shouldn't surprise anyone. Most any game chock full of DLC will have a "Complete" or "Ultimate" or if it's lucky enough "Game of the Year" edition. Any Bethesda game usually receives one after all it's DLC has been released.
Likely this takes place once the main game sales decline to appease late-comers, as well as give people with shoddy or no internet connection a chance at the DLC.
In either case, I'm glad I waited. And it comes with the '95 Mortal Kombat film? Score!

Unlike something like Super Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter IV, this sounds like it doesn't fundamentally change some of the mechanics in the game (balancing, characters, mechanics, game content, online matchmaking), just packages all of the DLC in with the original.
Splitting the player base between the people who bought all the content separately already and those who buy this Komplete edition just doesn't make sense.

I agree with your points. Also, I think that even if NRS have made some balancing adjustments, they kan just release a patch for the 2011 version, to make the two versions kompatible.
Another thing that just kame to mind is that by releasing this version, NRS kould please some of the tournament players who like the DLC kombatants, because they were not allowed to be used at the major events, but now if the Komplete Edition is used at EVO 2012, they would be permitted.

I have kinda noticed that amazon foretells these kinds of releases. When the regular game hits that under 30/closer to 20 range then about a few weeks later a "complete edition" comes out. It happened with this and I think l.a. Noire as well as gta iv some time ago. Of course it's not a trend nor a 100 percent thing and I could just be a babbling idiot but it may be something to look at relative to releases.
