The RealD update is included in today's <a href="http://www.udk.com/download">May 2012 UDK Beta</a> download.<br /><br />RealD allows developers to render PC and console games in stereoscopic 3D, with camera separation and 3D depth effects rendered in real-time, among other features. The first Unreal Engine 3 title to use RealD is Seamless Entertainment's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sol-exodus"><em>SOL: Exodus</em></a>, which received an update on Steam today to include 3D effects.<br /><br />Unreal Engine 3 first received stereoscopic 3D capabilities in 2010 with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/trioviz-3d-sdk-available-for-unreal-engine-3-next-month/">TriOviz</a>. A trademark for <em>Pac-Man Kart Rally</em> was first spotted in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/20/namco-registers-japanese-trademark-for-pac-man-kart-rally/">2010</a>, along with <em>Pac-Man Rally Kart</em>. We at Joystiq believe no one deserves to starve, and many indie developers are entitled to a fridge full of tasty, fulfilling media coverage, right here. This week, John Francis of Platronic Games is way too humble when discussing the outstanding 3D graphics of his hidden-object title, <a href="http://www.insidethesecretcastle.com/"><em>The Secret Castle</em></a>. Glasses-free 3D is hardly anything new (how are you guys digging the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/3ds/">3DS</a>?) but how about high-def 3D without the frames for your peepers? That's a bit more impressive, especially considering this isn't an expensive television set we're talking about. It's an expensive phone and tablet line from MasterImage 3D.<br />
<br />
The company's 4.3 inch smartphone and 10.1 inch tablet will be on display at this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ces-2012">Consumer Electronics Show</a> in Las Vegas, a representative told Joystiq earlier today. Each device will showcase full 720p high definition in 3D and utilizes MasterImage 3D's Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier Technology to produce "brighter images, reduced moir&eacute; effects (or rippled appearance) and the ability to work in any orientation -- portrait or landscape." We imagine it'll also play <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/angry-birds"><em>Angry Birds</em></a>.<br />
<br />
We've contacted MasterImage 3d for more information on the company's new tablet and smartphone.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/31/masterimage-3d-to-debut-glasses-free-720p-3d-tablet-and-smartpho/">MasterImage 3D to debut glasses-free 720p 3D tablet and smartphone at CES</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 31 Dec 2011 00:40:00 EST. Like a horseman of the apocalypse, Sony's undeniable spokesperson Kevin Butler has stormed the holiday shopping battlefield, riding a sale horse. <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/11/30/exclusive-best-buy-playstation-3d-display-offer/">The ad above</a> has the juicy details: At any Best Buy across the country, anyone who buys a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/sony-introduces-playstation-branded-3d-display-glasses/">PlayStation 3D Display</a> -- the Sony-branded, $499 bundle that comes with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/motorstorm-apocalypse"><em>MotorStorm Apocalypse</em></a> -- can attach a 160GB PS3 to their purchase for just $100.<br />
<br />
Think of it this way: For the original launch price of the PS3, you can buy the console, a game and a television which shoots pictures directly into your brain. The times, friends; they are a-changin'.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/30/buy-a-playstation-3d-display-at-best-buy-get-a-ps3-for-100/">Buy a PlayStation 3D Display at Best Buy, get a PS3 for $100</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 14:30:00 EST. The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment will host its first exhibit in Oakland starting December 3. Appropriately for its first foray into a physical exhibition space, the museum is highlighting "The History of Early 3D." That's 3D as in polygons, not glasses. Think <em>Star Fox</em> and <em>Doom</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/29/made-museum-delves-into-early-3d-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MADE museum delves into early 3D games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/29/made-museum-delves-into-early-3d-games/">MADE museum delves into early 3D games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 23:00:00 EST. Since the 3DS's launch, many gamers and reviewers have complained about the lack of titles that use the handheld's stereoscopic 3D features in a meaningful way capable of affecting or improving gameplay -- new experiences unavailable elsewhere, something to justify early adopters' expensive purchases.<br />
<br />
Some unaccommodating people would act as if 3DS games failing to meet this standard aren't worth their attention. The gimmick of an image that really looks like a dog's tongue is coming out of the screen to lick their face is not enough, not if the novelty ends there. "These puppy kisses mean nothing to me," they will sneer. "Take him away and drown this contemptible creature in a river."<br />
<br />
If there's a title that will please those demanding more depth to 3DS releases, as well as those puppy drowners, it's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/super-mario-3d-land"><em>Super Mario 3D Land</em></a>. This platforming masterpiece is the <em>Avatar</em> of 3DS games, proof that 3D in this medium isn't crap when it's thoughtfully planned and executed, evidence that it's worth the (potential) literal headaches because you just might see something you've never seen before.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/24/editorial-lay-of-the-3d-land/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Editorial: Lay of the 3D Land</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/24/editorial-lay-of-the-3d-land/">Editorial: Lay of the 3D Land</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Nov 2011 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/Joystiq/videos/7071/">This latest trailer</a> from Microsoft's 343 Industries goes behind the scenes on <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/halo-combat-evolved-anniversary"><em>Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary</em></a>'s campaign mode, which the team tells us has been carefully updated graphically and with extra features like online co-op mode, skull modifiers, 3D, and even <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/15/halo-anniversary-adding-analyze-mode-with-kinect/">that Kinect functionality</a> we learned about last weekend. And there's a lot of thought going into these features: Master Chief's retro armor, for example, was iterated on for a good six to seven months (including cues from fan feedback after its first appearance at E3) before the team arrived at the final version.<br />
<br />
As Franchise Development Director Frank O'Connor himself says, the updated game certainly seems like quite a <em>sm&ouml;rg&aring;sbord</em> for the <em>Halo</em> fan, all for just $40. <em>Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary</em> is due out on November 15.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/18/343-goes-behind-the-scenes-of-halo-anniversarys-campaign/">343 goes behind the scenes of Halo: Anniversary's campaign</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 07:00:00 EST. Want to see Ezio Auditore hookblade people in 3D? That's <em>sick</em>. You're sick.<br />
<br />
But you can totally do that, as Ubisoft has added 3D support to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations"><em>Assassin's Creed: Revelations</em></a>. You can enjoy the illusion of depth whether you have a 3D television or not: the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions use TriOviz's tech for normal TVs, and are also compatible with all 3DTVs. The PC version uses Nvidia's 3D Vision technology.<br />
<br />
Speaking of hookblades and sickness, have fun zipping over cities with 3D turned on. And by "have fun" we mean "keep a bucket handy."<br />

<a href="http://blogs.sega.com/2011/09/27/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-%E2%80%93-extended-cut-gets-modern-and-retro-3d/">Sega</a> has announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut</em></a> will not only feature stereoscopic 3D support for those with hoity-toity future TVs, but also anaglyph technology, for those of us with TVs older than we are. Check out the gallery below to see this ancient, polychromatic technique in action.<br />
<br />
Take note: European copies of the game will include the prerequisite red-cyan glasses, but North American versions will go without. Don't worry -- we're sure you've got a pair tucked into some errant copy of <em>The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3D</em>.<br />

We still don't really know what the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/mystery-move-game-in-development-courtesy-of-plastic-and-sony-s/">Move game</a> is that's being made by Plastic and Sony Santa Monica, but we can now see a <em>second</em> video of it at <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-26-fresh-details-on-new-santa-monica-game">Eurogamer</a>. Like the previous video, the latest release consists of off-screen footage, mostly of a forest environment with a mysterious floating hand. There's an equally mysterious door in the forest, not connected to anything.<br />
<br />
Other footage shows that floating hand in a car, gripping the steering wheel. We're sure the hand is supposed to be some kind of on-screen avatar representing the Move controls, but the effect of being in a car driven by Thing is terrifying. A double image in the video suggests that whatever this is, it will display in 3D.<br />
<br />
The video actually consists on two variations of the same scenes, one in which the player-controlled car drives by a pig, and another in which it collides with said pig. "Comparing them will give you all the answers about our upcoming title," Plastic told Eurogamer when it sent the footage. So ... the game is like <em>Quantum Leap</em>, but with a disembodied hand going back in time to save a pig. That's our official guess. Oh boy. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/26/additional-footage-from-plastics-move-game-deepens-the-mystery/">Additional footage from Plastic's Move game deepens the mystery</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 17:00:00 EST. Almost one-third of players think the 3DS's most prominent selling feature -- the 3D -- detracts from the gameplay experience, a survey from research firm Interpret LLC found. The survey asked 1,600 adults if they were aware the 3DS existed (60 percent), and then if they knew it didn't require glasses to view the 3D effects (28 percent). Of those who had played the 3DS, 28 percent said 3D detracted from the gaming experience, compared with 22 percent who thought 3D was an improvement. Thirteen percent played with the 3D turned completely off.<br />
<br />
Most respondents, 56 percent, preferred 3D gaming through a console-TV set-up, while only 7 percent said a handheld 3D device was their preference. Players who experienced dizziness or nausea from watching 3D entertainment rose seven percent points from the previous year, to 37 percent.<br />
<br />
We expect the 3DS to make a speech some time soon attempting to gain back bipartisan approval, push a new jobs bill and kiss some babies. Not that that always works, but <em>it's what's done</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/24/3d-gamings-approval-rating-low-blamed-on-inherited-wars-and-ec/">3D gaming's approval rating low, blamed on inherited wars and economy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Sep 2011 15:30:00 EST. Geordi LaForge ain't got nothin' on all them fly mothers in Japan -- once they start rockin' the HMZ-T1 3D display come November 11. The head-mounted duckbill features two 1280x720, 0.7-inch OLED screens that are meant to reproduce the sensation of watching a 750-inch screen in 3D from 20 meters away (ideal gaming conditions!) Oh yeah, and it's got 5.1 surround sound in the headphones.<br />
<br />
Price? Can you really put a price on having the 24th century right now?<br />
<br />
Okay, yes, because Sony is expected to charge &yen;60,000 ($783 US) for the experience. The helmet, which must remain tethered, comes with an HDMI input and output processor unit. No word yet on when Sony will bring the future overseas.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/sonys-hmz-t1-head-mounted-3d-display-available-in-japan-on-nov/">Sony's HMZ-T1 head-mounted 3D display available in Japan on Nov. 11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 10:00:00 EST. All this time, we've thought <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/26/walmart-includes-free-resistance-3-with-playstation-3d-display-p/">Walmart</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/amazon-also-bundling-resistance-3-pre-order-with-playstation-3dt/">Amazon</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/gamestop-bundling-resistance-3-with-playstation-3dtv-anyway-if/">GameStop</a> were stickin' it to the man by offering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resistance-3"><em>Resistance 3</em></a> as a pre-order bonus for Sony's 3D PlayStation Display, even after the bug-hunt simulator had been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/sony-replaces-resistance-3-with-motorstorm-apocalypse-in-3dtv-b/">officially replaced</a> by <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/motorstorm-apocalypse">MotorStorm: Apocalypse</a>.</em> It seems we were wrong.<br />
<br />
As it turns out, this was Sony's plan <em>the whole</em> <em>time</em>, for some completely inexplicable and incomprehensible reason. While still not officially part of the actual bundle, <em>Resistance 3</em> will be included with any 3D PlayStation Display pre-ordered before September 30. <em>MotorStorm: Apocalypse</em>'s inclusion is not dependent upon pre-ordering, however, so you've still got until the launch in November to decide if the features offered can justify $500.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/29/sony-officially-puts-resistance-3-back-in-ps3-3d-display-bundle/">Sony officially puts Resistance 3 back in PS3 3D Display bundle (if you pre-order)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 16:00:00 EST. Microsoft has announced that <em>Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary</em> will have a 3D display mode. This confirms another piece of information from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/04/halo-combat-evolved-hd/">the report</a> we gave you in February.<br />
<br />
Demonstrated to us at the recent <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2011">Gamescom</a> event in Germany, <em>Halo</em>'s 3D intensity is scalable and only works in the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/22/halo-anniversary-footage-shows-off-silent-cartographer/">updated graphics</a> mode. Producer Dan Ayoub claims the framerate will stay "consistent" with 3D activated, even when things get hectic.<br />
<br />
The 3D experience will not be available in splitscreen co-op, nor when shifting over to <em>Halo</em>'s original graphics engine. <em>Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary</em> will be available on November 15.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/26/halo-combat-evolved-anniversary-supports-3d-tvs/">Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary supports 3D TVs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. You won't have to wait for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/04/batman-arkham-asylum-goty-edition-includes-3d-glasses/">"Game of the Year" version</a> to play <em>Batman: Arkham City</em> in 3D. When the game ships in October, it'll have two varieties of 3D support built in. The Xbox and PS3 versions will be playable in stereoscopic 3D on compatible televisions, using active-shutter glasses. The PC version will include Nvidia 3D Vision tech to support 3D output on compatible TVs or monitors, if you happen to have a GeForce GPU.<br />
<br />
In addition, the game supports regular old anaglyph 3D when played on an HDTV with "3D glasses available for the video game." This is likely the same <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/trioviz">TriOviz</a> tech used in <em>Arkham Asylum</em>. So even if you don't have a fancy 3DTV (and <em>just</em> a fancy HDTV), you can see some cape virtually up in your face.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/batman-arkham-city-supports-3d-whether-you-have-a-3dtv-or-not/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Batman: Arkham City supports 3D whether you have a 3DTV or not</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/batman-arkham-city-supports-3d-whether-you-have-a-3dtv-or-not/">Batman: Arkham City supports 3D whether you have a 3DTV or not</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 09:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/gears-of-war-3-adds-3d-support-we-await-gears-of-war-3-d-re-tit/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/gears-3-3d.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></div>
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gears-of-war-3"><em>Gears of War 3</em></a> is the latest game to leverage its numerical modifier by adding 3D support (first pioneered by <em>classic</em> films like <em>Jaws 3-D</em> and <em>SpyKids 3-D)</em>, and joins other participants like <em>Killzone 3</em>, <em>Uncharted 3</em>, and <em>Resistance 3</em>. "It felt like something we wanted to have. It was a feature we didn't want to be deficient in," Gears producer Rod Fergusson told <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-15-gears-of-war-3-stereoscopic-3d-announced">Eurogamer</a>. "When you look at Gears 1, it was what people used to demo HD at the time."<br />
<br />
Ironically enough, the tradeoff for 3D support in <em>Gears 3</em> will be sub-HD resolutions. "Instead of 720p you're at five something," Fergusson said. "It's a little bit jaggier in certain areas." If it sounds weird to hear an Epic employee suggesting that an Epic game is anything less than a technology high-water mark, there's a reason for it: 3D support "was something that came in really late in our process," Fergusson explained. Instead of building in 3D support from the ground up, Epic instead opted for a post-processing effect that "generally works," he said. The technology is most likely TriOviz, which was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/trioviz-3d-sdk-available-for-unreal-engine-3-next-month/">accepted into Unreal Engine's Integrated Partners Program</a> last year. <br />
<br />
Fergusson says while 3D is still "a niche feature" we'll begin to see better support for it on the Xbox. "As you look forward, in the next [Xbox Development Kit] coming out of the Xbox, it'll have more support for 3D or more higher quality for native support for 3D," Fergusson said. "Moving forward, the Xbox will be able to take it further." And we're sure Epic and its ubiquitous Unreal Engine will be right alongside.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Epic just confirmed that <em>Gears 3</em> uses TriOviz. Here's the statement: <br />
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	"Gears of War 3" uses Darkworks' TriOviz technology, which is integrated with Unreal Engine 3, for stereoscopic 3D support. All "Gears of War 3" gameplay and cinematics have S3D support, and this extends to split-screen play as well.</blockquote><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/gears-of-war-3-adds-3d-support-we-await-gears-of-war-3-d-re-tit/">Gears of War 3 adds 3D support, we await Gears of War 3-D re-titling</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 12:15:00 EST. We'll admit we initially felt a little bad for PS3 owners who have to wait yet another week for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/child-of-eden"><em>Child of Eden</em></a> (it's been delayed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/18/child-of-eden-dated-priced-for-ps3/">from Sept. 20</a> to Sept. 27). But all that evaporated when we saw in an <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Ubisoft/status/101940960501579778">Ubisoft tweet</a> that the game would feature not only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/child-of-eden-pushed-back-to-september-on-ps3-will-support-move/">Move controls</a> but full 3D support.<br />

Not only will PS3 <em>CoE</em> players be controlling infinitely powerful galactic forces in a staggeringly beautiful tapestry of sights and sounds, but they'll be <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLVZAoQB2fI">doing it in 3D</a>! You know, we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/soulja-boy-tells-em-about-braid/">scoffed last time</a>, but when Soulja Boy tells us that <em>Child of Eden</em> on the PS3 is for people that drink and get drunk or people who smoke and get high ... well, he'll be right.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/child-of-eden-ps3-delayed-a-week-getting-3d-support/">Child of Eden PS3 delayed a week, getting 3D support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 10:45:00 EST. It appears as though GameStop won't be the only retailer to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/gamestop-bundling-resistance-3-with-playstation-3dtv-anyway-if/">reject</a> Sony's new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/sony-replaces-resistance-3-with-motorstorm-apocalypse-in-3dtv-b/"><em>Motorstorm: Apocalypse-</em>only PlayStation 3DTV bundle</a>. Like its brick-and-mortar competitor, Amazon will <a href="http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3D-Display-3/dp/B00562O78S/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1312891107&amp;sr=1-1">also</a> toss in a copy of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/resistance-3"><em>Resistance 3</em></a>, which was originally slated to be the 3D display's pack-in title.<br />
<br />
So, just to recap, that's a 24" 3D television, 3D glasses, HDMI cable, <em>MotorStorm: Apocalypse</em> and <em>Resistance 3</em>, all for 500 smackers. Sure, it sounds like a good deal but, frankly, we're holding out until Amazon ponies up a free copy of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tangled-Four-Disc-Combo-Blu-ray-Digital/dp/B004G6009K/ref=sr_1_9?s=movies-tv&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1312917285&amp;sr=1-9"><em>Tangled</em></a>.<br />

	Like it or not, the world's biggest technology companies are convinced that active 3D (the kind that uses powered, liquid crystal glasses) is the next big thing; so much so that they're willing to put all of their techno-eggs into the same business-basket in order to prevent cross-manufacturer incompatibility killing the cause.</div>
<br />
One of the few universal truths of the technology world is that the key to a burgeoning format's success is <em>unification </em>and <em>compatibility</em>. Proprietary technologies breed platform fragmentation, and when products aren't compatible with each other, people don't use them, and the format dies. Take USB, for example: USB is successful as a standard because everyone uses the same connectors and licenses the same underlying technologies. You can take a USB keyboard made by one manufacturer and plug it into a motherboard built by another, and it <em>works</em>. The same cannot be said, however, for the majority of 3D glasses in the world, and that's a big problem for a lot of big companies.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/08/sony-and-others-looking-to-standardize-active-3d-glasses/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony and others looking to standardize active 3D glasses</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/08/sony-and-others-looking-to-standardize-active-3d-glasses/">Sony and others looking to standardize active 3D glasses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 23:30:00 EST. Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has plenty to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">worry</a> about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/ea-sees-dip-in-physical-sales-for-q1-2012-increase-in-digital/">at present</a>, but a future full of 3D displays isn't one of them. <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2011/07/28/ea-chief-stereoscopic-3d-gaming-is-a-dud-so-far/">VentureBeat</a> reports that at EA's recent shareholder meeting, the executive responded to an inquiry about stereoscopic 3D games by saying, "We have not seen a big uptake for 3D gaming. We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home. We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what consumers want."<br />
<br />
And consumers don't appear to be demanding the tech -- evidenced by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/nintendo-cuts-profit-forecast-by-82/">Nintendo's financial report</a> yesterday, accompanied by an announcement of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/3ds-price-drops-to-170-on-august-12/">significant price reduction of its 3D handheld</a>.<br />
<br />
Riccitiello said EA will continue focusing on mobile, social and online. Those are markets where they are seeing "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/10/ea-40-of-game-sales-digital-npd-becoming-less-relevant/">really high returns</a>," compared to the "very poor returns focusing on 3D."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/29/riccitiello-focusing-on-3d-makes-for-poor-returns/">Riccitiello: Focusing on 3D makes for 'poor returns'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 11:00:00 EST. <strong>Update</strong>: Just a scant eight hours later, Nintendo has clarified its promise of "
<meta charset="utf-8" />
an additional library of select 3D movies" for the 3DS. The clarification in short? "Nah."<br />
<br />
"The press release announcing the new Netflix service for Nintendo 3DS also references the system's upcoming short-form video service," Big N said in a written statement. "Nintendo 3DS owners soon will be able to enjoy free, specially selected video content that includes 3D movie trailers, comedy clips and music videos." This is, of course, the short form video service we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/netflix-and-short-form-video-service-coming-to-nintendo-3ds/">learned of in March</a>.<br />
<br />
Just to be clear, by "an additional library of select movies," Nintendo meant "the new Bruno Mars video and the trailer for <em>Big Momma Goes to the Big House.</em>"<br />

Unless it comes out on Blu-ray. But anyway!<br />
<br />
The one-night-only US showing will pre-date the Japanese release by a little over a month, and will be immediately followed by 20 minutes of interviews with various <em>Tekken</em> staff, including <em>Cowboy Bebop</em> alumni and screenwriter <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dai_Sat%C5%8D">Dai Satō</a>. If you just paid attention to the marketing for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/child-of-eden"><em>Child of Eden</em></a>, you'd think it was an Xbox 360 exclusive. But there's totally a PS3 version <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/child-of-eden-pushed-back-to-september-on-ps3-will-support-move/">coming out in September</a>. According to Q? Entertainment producer James Mielke, the delay had nothing to do with Microsoft moneyhats, and everything to do with the fact that Q? is making each version on its own, with a staff of about 30 people.<br />
<br />
"We're doing everything in-house, we're not farming anything out," he told the <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/minisite?cId=3181465">8-4 Play podcast</a>. Mielke didn't outright confirm any special features in the PS3 version, but said "it will definitely be worth the couple months that people have to wait for the PS3 version to get finished. People with PS3s, people with nice TVs, people with all kinds of control options... it's going to be really cool."<br />

The reference to fancy TVs suggests 3D support, and "control options" would suggest Move support -- something that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/child-of-eden-pushed-back-to-september-on-ps3-will-support-move/">Ubisoft has told us</a> to expect.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/child-of-eden-on-ps3-will-have-really-cool-extras/">Child of Eden on PS3 will have 'really cool' extras</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 14:15:00 EST. If you run to your PS3 now and fire up <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/tetris-psn"><em>Tetris</em></a>, you'll be presented with the option to update. Download that 75MB file and -- just like that! -- you'll be playing in 3D. Oh, also, you have to have a 3D television and be wearing your glasses. We should really have told you about that part first.<br />
<br />
In other 3D <em>Tetris</em> news, right before E3 the Tetris Company announced <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43307000">plans</a> to localize Hudson's <em>Tetris Axis</em> for 3DS this October, claiming that it "will allow fans to experience the game like never before - in 3D!" Now, by the time that comes out, fans will already have experienced it through the PS3 version, rendering that hyperbolic press release statement inaccurate.<br />
<br />
To be fair, though, it was already inaccurate, because the Virtual Boy's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-Tetris"><em>V-Tetris</em></a> got there first, in <em>1995</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/14/tetris-goes-3d-on-psn-today-3ds-in-october/">Tetris goes 3D on PSN today, 3DS in October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 12:15:00 EST. Jack Tretton revealed a new piece of hardware: A TV. And some 3D glasses. Available in one $499 bundle this fall, the 3D-enabled 24-inch television includes a pair of PlayStation-branded 3D glasses (extra glasses are available for $69.99 separately), a six foot HDMI cable and a copy of <em>Resistance 3</em>. Best of all, the screen includes some clever technology which allows two players looking at the display at two different angles to see separate images, effectively eschewing traditional split-screen multiplayer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/sony-introduces-playstation-branded-3d-display-glasses/">Sony introduces PlayStation-branded 3D display, glasses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 20:49:00 EST. Finally, Sega has something for those of you who love both the PlayStation Move and the f-word. Today, the publisher announced a new PS3 version of the Wii's utterly vulgar <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>, which adds ... you know, the usual PS3 stuff: Move support and 3D.<br />
<br />
It also adds "two brand-new scenarios," offering even more opportunities for Agent G, Detective Washington and pretty much everyone else to scream obscenities at you as they shoot at zombies in a B-movie version of Louisiana. Maybe it can reclaim the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/20/mafia-2-takes-guinness-f-bomb-record-hotd-overkill-effing-deth/">record</a>!<br />
<br />
The Extended Cut will be out in North America on October effing 25, and in Europe three effing days later, just in time for Halloween! Play it nice and loud, and keep those kids away from your house.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut-ps3/">The House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut (PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut-ps3/#4168865"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/23082hotdhospitalexterior01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut-ps3/#4168866"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/23083hotdhospitalinterior01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut-ps3/#4168867"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/23084hotdhospitalinterior02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut-ps3/#4168868"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/23085hotdhospitalscreamer01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut-ps3/#4168863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/5803hotdec4colwht_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut-brings-3d-cussin-t/">The House of the Dead: Overkill Extended Cut brings 3D cussin' to PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 May 2011 12:00:00 EST. Perhaps all that "playing" of your favorite Ubisoft games was getting tiresome? The French game publisher's film arm, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ubisoft-motion-pictures">Ubisoft Motion Pictures</a>, told <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118037076">Variety</a> this week that it's working to adapt three of Ubisoft's biggest properties -- <em>Assassin's Creed</em>, <em>Splinter Cell</em> and <em>Ghost Recon</em> -- into "3D features," confirming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/ubisoft-survey-gauges-interest-in-assassins-creed-ghost-recon/">speculative plans</a> that appeared in a consumer survey last month. UMP head Jean-Julien Baronnet explained that his division "has been working with the games' producers and Ubisoft's marketing team to identify the DNA of each game and come up with storylines that are consistent." He also noted that the group's plans have garnered plenty of interest "from US studios and screenwriters."<br />
<br />
Further, senior VP of international marketing and distribution Jean de Rivieres promises a script for at least one of the projects "by the end of the year." He and two other UMP execs will be taking a trip to Los Angeles next month in order to broker deals with studios and agents, Rivieres added.<br />
<br />
In addition to the trio of feature projects, the studio is reportedly developing a 3D, CGI animated series based on the <em>Rabbids</em> property and named after the <em>Raving Rabbids</em> game series. It's said to comprise 78 episodes, at seven minutes apiece, and negotiations are apparently underway to distribute the series in France and the US.<br />

You'll be able to see the next <em>Tekken</em> release in 3D, making the act of a mohawked robot punching a bear more immersive than ever. You just won't be able to play it. <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/news/201105/11043464.html">Announced</a> at a Namco Bandai event in Dubai, <em>Tekken: Blood Vengeance</em> is a new CG movie scripted by <em>Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex</em> and <em>Cowboy Bebop</em> writer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dai_Sat%C5%8D">Dai Sato</a>, with animation by <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-degeneration">Resident Evil: Degeneration's</a></em> <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/05/11/tekken_blood_vengeance_trailer/">Digital Frontier</a>.<br />
<br />
You can see the first trailer (and its brief scene of panda riding) after the break. It'll be out in Japanese theaters this summer.<br />
<br />
In other <em>Tekken</em> movie news, Anchor Bay Films announced a North American release for last year's live-action <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tekken,movie"><em>Tekken</em> film</a>, which will hit Blu-ray and DVD on July 19.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/tekken-blood-vengeance-movie-rides-a-panda-in-3d-this-summer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tekken: Blood Vengeance movie rides a panda in 3D this summer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/tekken-blood-vengeance-movie-rides-a-panda-in-3d-this-summer/">Tekken: Blood Vengeance movie rides a panda in 3D this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 May 2011 10:00:00 EST. Speaking at the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters conference, director <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/james-cameron">James Cameron</a> had a lot to say about 3D display technology. After announcing the founding of his own 3D tech company, the Cameron-Pace Group, Cameron talked about gaming's role in the industry's growth. In an interview with <a href="http://blog.games.yahoo.com/blog/626-james-cameron-sees-the-future-of-3d-in-nintendo;_ylt=AoM4snjsJ_NOydXKEEeTZDZfzssh">Yahoo</a>, Cameron sung the praises of the 3DS, saying, "Video games are going to help propel the autostereoscopic (glasses-free) play because that's going to be the entry level for most people."<br />
<br />
Cameron seems to think that the 3DS is a kind of gateway drug to harder 3D displays. He added, "These single-viewing devices that are engaging the person to play these video games will drive a lot of investment in autostereoscopic displays for that very reason." Wow, Mr. Cameron's just chock-full of good ideas! In fact, later in the interview, he said, "I'd love to do an MMORPG experience inside the <em>Avatar</em> universe and I would like to see it authored in 3D." Oh, no. <em>Oh</em>. <em>No</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/25/james-cameron-says-3d-being-propelled-by-video-games/">James Cameron says 3D being propelled by video games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Apr 2011 15:00:00 EST. Sega is planning two demos for its upcoming <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/virtua-tennis-4">Virtua Tennis 4</a>.</em> As Sega's Mie Kumagai notes on <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/04/06/virtua-tennis-4-demos-are-only-on-ps3/">PlayStation Blog Europe</a>, both demos will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3. The first demo will be released on April 13 in Europe -- April 19 in the US, Sega tells Joystiq -- and will show off the game's new World Tour mode. The newly revised globetrotting mode uses a board game layout, which you can glimpse in a trailer after the break. The demo will allow players to try out a small portion of the mode's first season.<br />
<br />
Another demo is also planned for later this year. The second demo will include PlayStation Move support and will also let players test out the game's 3D functionality.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/06/psn-serving-up-exclusive-virtua-tennis-4-demos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSN serving up exclusive Virtua Tennis 4 demos</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/06/psn-serving-up-exclusive-virtua-tennis-4-demos/">PSN serving up exclusive Virtua Tennis 4 demos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 21:30:00 EST. Insomniac has just announced at its Community Day event here in Los Angeles that when <em>Resistance 3</em> finally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/11/resistance-3-coming-september-6-2011/">arrives on September 6</a>, it will bring with it support for 3D televisions, as well as compatibility with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/sharp-shooter-attachment-for-playstation-move-new-dualshock-col/">PlayStation Move and its Sharp Shooter attachment</a>. The studio said during a public panel that it was encouraged by the Move functionality in <em>Killzone 3</em> and plans to implement <em>Resistance 3</em> in a similar way.<br />

This is all good news, because, let us tell you: If you've never died in a Chimera attack, holding a model gun with a motion controller attached while wearing 3D glasses, well ... you haven't really <em>lived</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/29/resistance-3-to-feature-move-and-sharpshooter-support-along-wit/">Resistance 3 to support PlayStation Move and Sharp Shooter, along with 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 23:00:00 EST. Nintendo believes <em>strongly</em> in glasses-free 3D. The company wouldn't be able to achieve this feat on a home console, short of shipping an innovative TV in the box, so ... it's probably not going to do that.<br />
<br />
"I think at Nintendo, we realize that any sort of goggle-type 3D technology was not going to work," 3DS hardware producer Hideki Konno told <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2011/TECH/gaming.gadgets/03/25/nintendo.3ds/">CNN</a>. "In order to make 3D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3D." Konno and his team at Nintendo did <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/3ds-producer-reveals-wii-based-arts-and-crafts-3d-prototype/">experiment</a> with a 3D display tethered to a Wii before development of the 3DS began, but purely as a proof-of-concept for glasses-free 3D.<br />
<br />
Echoing Konno's remarls, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told CNN, "Glasses-free is a big deal. We've not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we've learned on 3D, likely, that won't be it." It probably won't be 4D either -- that's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/15/kutaragi-live-and-unhinged/">been done</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/29/reggie-nintendos-next-home-console-unlikely-to-feature-3d/">Reggie: Nintendo's next home console unlikely to feature 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 18:00:00 EST. Nintendo UK Head of Communications Robert Saunders recently <a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content.php?45324-Nintendo-responds-to-3DS-headache-complaints">responded</a> to a post on <a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content.php?45283-Hundreds-of-gamers-complain-of-horrible-3DS-headaches">MaxConsole</a>, which corralled a number of Twitter users complaining that their time with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a> was causing headaches and dizziness. Saunders explained, "When viewing any kind of 3D images (TV, movies etc.), some people might experience minor discomfort." He added, "The effects are short term and have no lasting effect, in fact most players can continue after taking a short break." Click past the jump for his full statement.<br />
<br />
For those who find Saunders' response a little too <em>corporate</em>, <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/3/28/">Penny Arcade</a> also released its response to 3DS discomfort earlier today. Sure, it's a <em>smidge</em> exaggerated, but we find it to be a tad more entertaining than the company line.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/28/nintendo-responds-to-3ds-headache-complaints/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo responds to 3DS headache complaints</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/28/nintendo-responds-to-3ds-headache-complaints/">Nintendo responds to 3DS headache complaints</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 14:00:00 EST. "In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware -- holy crap! A bunch of missiles and fighter jets just flew right past me! I bet that if someone were watching my every action from an over-the-shoulder perspective on some sort of three-dimensional display unit, that would have looked really, really awesome!" -<em>Green Lantern Vol. 2, #76, 1970</em><br />
	<br />
	DC Comics and Warner Bros. Interactive have announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/green-lantern-rise-of-the-manhunters"><em>Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters</em></a> is now slated for a release on the 3DS, joining the standard DS and console versions. Additionally, the game -- which drops June 7 and ties into the events of the Green Lantern film (which hits theaters June 17) -- will feature a 3D option on PS3 and 360, provided you own the necessary accoutrements. We can only imagine how rad flying around and shooting stuff out of power rings is going to look in a stereoscopic context.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/24/green-lantern-rise-of-the-manhunters-will-shine-in-3d/">Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters will shine in 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 14:00:00 EST. Originally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/splinter-cell-and-prince-of-persia-hd-trilogies-coming-march-22/">due to be released today</a> on both Blu-ray disc and PSN, the HD-ified <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/splinter-cell-trilogy-hd-collection"><em>Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy</em></a> has slipped off the radar and into the shadows. <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/115/1157109p1.html">IGN</a> reports that it'll wait there, for undisclosed reasons, until resurfacing on June 21. It's not alone -- the retail release of the <em>Prince of Persia HD </em>trilogy, also expected today, has been pushed to April 19.<br />
<br />
Both trilogies will retail for $40 when they finally arrive on Blu-ray. The three high-res <em>Prince of Persia</em> games are already available via PSN at $15 a pop.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/23/splinter-cell-classic-trilogy-sneaks-to-june-21-prince-of-persi/">Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy sneaks to June 21, Prince of Persia HD on Blu-ray also delayed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 15:20:00 EST. When it comes to <em>BioShock Infinite,</em> Irrational Games is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/21/bioshock-infinite-wont-be-a-port-on-ps3-all-versions-developed/">committed</a> to delivering parity across platforms. Unlike the PS3 port of the original <em>BioShock,</em> the PS3 version of <em>Infinite</em> is being developed in house alongside the other versions. The PS3 game won't be adding any trivial, platform-specific gimmicks either.<br />
<br />
Creative director Ken Levine told <a href="http://www.play-mag.co.uk/general/ken-levine-bioshock-move-will-be-cheating-gamers/">Play</a> that <em>Infinite</em> won't feature <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move/">PlayStation Move</a> integration, explaining that he'd "never want to throw in Move support just because it's going to make some first party happy." Levine suggested that Irrational simply doesn't see a novel use for the motion controller within the game.<br />
<br />
"[It's] like, 'Okay, do you want to harvest or save Little Sister? Waggle left to harvest, waggle right to save!'" he imagined if Move was applied to the first <em>BioShock</em>. "You can have Move support on your box, but people are going to know you're cheating them," he said, noting that "you have to be able to say you're doing something special with it."<br />
<br />
Levine, however, hasn't made a decision about a possible <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@ps3,3d">3D display option</a> in <em>Infinite</em> (which wouldn't necessarily be exclusive to the PS3 version). "It's something I'd be more open to," he admitted. "I'm not saying whether we're doing that or not, but it's sort of a passive integration."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/22/bioshock-infinite-wont-support-move-levine-open-to-3d/">BioShock Infinite won't support Move, Levine 'open to' 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 11:00:00 EST. Sega is showing the <em>Thor</em> and <em>Captain America</em> games at an event for both Marvel properties, and is also tweeting news snippets out of said event. First off, games based on both Marvel movies will be <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/SEGA/status/48502950842204160">released on 3DS</a>.<br />
<br />
Second -- and this dovetails nicely -- the Xbox and PS3 versions will also be <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/SEGA/status/48504780049481728">playable in 3D</a>. No word yet about whether this will require a 3D television or if it'll be something like TriOviz that works on everything. <em>Thor</em> is currently slated for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/11/thor-god-of-thunder-coming-to-consoles-on-may-3rd-2011/">May 11</a> release, with <em>Captain America</em> following sometime this <a href="http://www.sega.com/games/?g=7005">summer</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/17/thor-and-captain-america-to-avenge-in-3d-on-ps3-xbox-and-of-c/">Thor and Captain America to avenge in 3D on PS3, Xbox and (of course) 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 19:10:00 EST. During a <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/sxsw-2011">SXSW Interactive</a> demo event, Sony let us know that Insomniac's co-op action platformer <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/ratchet-and-clank-all-4-one"><em>Ratchet &amp; Clank: All 4 One</em></a>, will add new depth to its Lombax-tossing action by featuring stereoscopic 3D visuals. You know, as first-party Sony games tend to do. It's like your eyes are playing in co-op! <br />
<br />
The announcement was actually first made by Sony's Jack Tretton on CNBC. You can see that presentation <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232/?video=3000010053&amp;play=1">here</a>. We got a chance to play <em>All 4 One</em> during SXSW (in 2D, however), and we'll bring you our impressions soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/13/ratchet-and-clank-all-4-one-features-3d/">Ratchet &amp; Clank All 4 One features 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 13 Mar 2011 16:50:00 EST. 	<img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/drake-balancing_530x330.jpg" style="width: 530px; height: 330px; " /></div>
When I say <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/uncharted-3-drakes-deception"><em>Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception</em></a> has the best stereoscopic 3D presentation I've seen so far, I don't mean to imply that I'll shut my laptop after I complete this sentence and dash out the door to buy a 3DTV (an inconsiderate and fatal idea, given that I'm writing this from inside an airplane). The work done by Naughty Dog, with 3D incorporated from an early stage of development, is not an effective sales pitch for the technology -- and that's why it's good. The effect is subtle, unobtrusive, useful, and very distant from the eye-blasting nonsense of what you would derisively label a "sales pitch."<br />
<br />
Kneeling on the floor in front of a large 3D television, Naughty Dog co-founder Evan Wells appears childlike and completely involved as he marches Nathan Drake through the burning chateau, a now-familiar venue for <em>Uncharted 3</em> gameplay demos. As Drake and stubborn sidekick Sully attempt to escape, the heat of the flames racing them to the top of the building, they're forced across a wooden beam that's fallen between the crumbling remnants of a floor. "This an inner ear thing?! Let's go!" Drake yells from the other side, firing at thugs as Sully slowly -- like, <em>slowly</em> -- walks and wobbles to the end of the beam. This is an interesting, tense scene regardless of your television, and in 3D it's very easy to gauge Sully's distance at a glance. That's not exactly mind blowing, I know, but I'd rather take a sliver of contextual usefulness over an in-your-face cheese slap.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/uncharted-3-d-preview-drake-drop-distance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Uncharted 3(D) preview: Drake Drop Distance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/uncharted-3-d-preview-drake-drop-distance/">Uncharted 3(D) preview: Drake Drop Distance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST.
