Japan's insatiable hunger for <em>Monster Hunter</em> can only be cured with ... actual food, inspired by <em>Monster Hunter</em>. Chain restaurant Anrakun is preparing a <a href="http://www.capcom.co.jp/monsterhunter/topic_anrakutei.html">special menu</a> of four dishes inspired by Capcom's multiplayer hack 'n slash, including a "cow bone" (pictured left) and boney sausages (pictured right). These delicacies are not cheap, going for 609 yen each (~$7.38).<br />
<br />
These limited-time promotions are quite common in Japan, creating a niche kind of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/07/video-games-growing-local-japanese-tourism-thanks-monster-hunt/">tourism</a>. We're guilty of taking part as well, having gone so far as to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/17/review-monster-hunter-3-ramen/">review</a> <em>Monster Hunter</em>-branded ramen.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/oh-no-its-real-life-monster-hunter-food/">Oh no, it's real-life Monster Hunter food</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 00:00:00 EST. Starting next month, cartons of Meiji's coffee and fruit drinks, as well as its line of puddings, will bear Pac-Man imagery.<br />
<br />
<meta charset="utf-8">The enjoyment from these packages won't just be superficial. Each will come with a code allowing Japanese customers to download special Meiji/Pac-Man images for their cell phones. One on hand, we love this, but on the other hand, we can't help but think Namco Bandai's money would have been better spent on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/preview-pac-man-battle-royale/"><em>Pac-Man Battle Royale</em></a> machines. Last week, Capcom's amazing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/a-sports-drink-for-hard-working-robots/">E-Tank</a> beverages jumped off of the screen and into Japanese convenience stores. We totally want it, both to have in our small but meaningful <em>Mega Man</em> collection and to taste how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a> (and whichever food company they've partnered with) imagines the <em>flavor</em> of reserve energy. But even the flavor of robot fuel, were we ever daring enough to <em>open</em> a mint-condition can (we're not) wouldn't slake our thirst for food items that look like things in video games.<br /><br />But enough about our, uh, <em>tastes.</em> Is there one item from any game that you'd like to be made into a real consumable? Eager to try some Lon-Lon Milk? Want to crack open a nice, cold Super Missile refill? Or just something simple like an authentic Merv Burger?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/wii-warm-up-get-equipped-with/">Wii Warm Up: Get equipped with ...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Aug 2008 08:00:00 EST. Some people are just gifted, like the Japanese mother who is responsible for these brilliant <em>Pok&eacute;mon</em>-themed lunches. We've seen some neat <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/30/nin-bento-makes-us-happy-we-have-to-eat-food-to-live/">Nintendo-themed</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/26/ds-makes-for-a-lite-lunch/">bento</a> before, but comparing those to today's specimens is a bit like holding up a Monet next to the scuffed chalk drawings on the sidewalk out front. They're just in different leagues.<br /><br />Hit the break to see the tastiest Pikachu <em>ever</em>. There's another of these, and tons that aren't made of Pokemans, at the <a href="http://ameblo.jp/yukiko4-2/theme-10007033165.html">source</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/super-effective-pokemon-bento/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Super effective Pokemon bento</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/super-effective-pokemon-bento/">Super effective Pokemon bento</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 21:00:00 EST. <br />It was, we suppose, inevitable. Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cooking-guide"><em>Cooking Guide</em></a> released in Japan two years ago (as <em>Cooking Navi</em>), where it shifted a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/31/japanese-software-sales-august-21-august-27-omg-edition/">decent number</a> of units. It recently emerged in Europe, and did <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/12/another-week-in-europe/">pretty well</a> there, too (it'll be coming to the U.S. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-cooking-guide-headed-to-the-u-s/">this November</a>). And what happens each time Nintendo releases a successful non-game? Answer: as sure as night follows day, (usually inferior) third-party alternatives appear.<br /><br />That's what has happened here, with Atari following Nintendo into the cooking-with-your-DS arena. <em>What's Cooking? with Jamie Oliver</em> will feature 100 recipes (<em>Cooking Guide</em> has 245), space for 100 of your own, a shopping list mode, and competitive cooking games. It's very similar to Nintendo's game then (though apparently you can share recipes via WiFi), except you get to look at Jamie Oliver and his smug, squishy, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mockney">Mockney</a> face a whole lot more.<br /><br />If, like this blogger, you regard Oliver as an affront to all that is decent about humankind, it might not be your thing. But it might be okay as a game.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/whats-cooking-with-jamie-oliver/">What's Cooking? with Jamie Oliver</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/whats-cooking-with-jamie-oliver/#926299"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wcjo0001__5_cg_jo_768768698_hgjg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/whats-cooking-with-jamie-oliver/#926298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wcjo0001__3__cg_jo_768768698_hgjg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/whats-cooking-with-jamie-oliver/#926297"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/jo_screen_14_cg_jo_768768698_hgjg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/whats-cooking-with-jamie-oliver/#926296"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/jo_screen_10_cg_jo_768768698_hgjg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/whats-cooking-with-jamie-oliver/#926295"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wcjo0001_cg_jo_768768698_hgjg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-atari-and-irritating-celebrity-chef-combine-for-cooking-ga/">E308: Atari and irritating celebrity chef combine for cooking game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 14:00:00 EST. Ahead of the training game's release in Europe <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/16/ds-releases-for-the-week-of-june-16th/">this week</a>, Nintendo grabbed its ladle and served up a generous helping of 35 new screens. Handily, these are all in English (as opposed to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/une-semaine-avec-my-french-coach-day-one/">French</a>, like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/cooking-navi-screens-fresh-from-the-oven/">last batch</a>), and we've picked up lots of new information as a result.<br /><br />For a start, it appears that the non-game will cater to the most fastidious of chefs. <em>Everything</em> can be filtered in <em>Cooking Guide</em>, so if you want to find a recipe which can be cooked in under 30 minutes, has meat as its main ingredient, is of average difficulty to prepare, and which comes in at under 300 calories, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-guide-cant-decide-what-to-eat/864922/">no problem</a>! You can also choose to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-guide-cant-decide-what-to-eat/864945/">exclude certain ingredients</a> that you don't like from your recipes, make your own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-guide-cant-decide-what-to-eat/864935/">shopping list</a>, or browse dishes from a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-guide-cant-decide-what-to-eat/864949/">particular country</a>.<br /><br />Best of all, a non-cook (such as this blogger) will find little in these screens that is intimidating, thanks to step-by-step instructions that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-guide-cant-decide-what-to-eat/864944/">aren't filled with jargon</a>, and a comprehensive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-guide-cant-decide-what-to-eat/864942/">glossary</a> for the overwhelmed. We never thought we'd say this about a training game, but we can't wait for this to find a home in our DSes.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/16/cooking-guide-caters-to-the-hungry-and-the-fussy/">Cooking Guide caters to the hungry and the fussy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST. After all, I'd quite like to live beyond forty, and my current repertoire in the kitchen (omelettes, toast, cereal) may prove an obstacle to that aim.<br /><br />These first nine screens of the localized western version are all in French (which feels appropriate, given that country's culinary reputation), but it's not hard to see that this non-game caters to a range of skill levels -- for example, I actually know what Spaghetti Carbonara <em>is</em>! There'll be 200 recipes in total, with each informing users of the calorie count and preparation time. Hit up our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-guide-cant-decide-what-to-eat/805332/full/">gallery</a> for more delicious screens.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/cooking-navi-screens-fresh-from-the-oven/">Cooking Navi screens, fresh from the oven</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 May 2008 15:00:00 EST. Okay, so this isn't true, blue <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/navigating-your-japanese-copy-of-tetris-ds/"><em>Tetris</em></a> (that would probably infringe on some copyrights), but these faux-<em>Tetris</em>-esque Meiji chocolates still look fun to us. If there's one thing we've learned from disobeying our parents, it's that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/02/eating-tetris-is-our-new-hobby/">playing with your food</a> is <em>fun</em>. The goal in this case is to put all the pieces together so that you completely fill in the rectangle board.<br /><br />These Meiji chocolate bar puzzles come in different difficulties, too -- as the chocolate flavor gets more bitter (white, to milk, to dark), the piece placement gets harder. Of course, the hardest part would be the test in willpower. It's not easy to play the puzzle after you <em>eat all the pieces</em>, we're sure. <br /><br />These might stale by the time you import them, but if you'd like some anyway for the novelty they cost 730 JPY (about $7 USD) each at <a href="http://www.strapya-world.com/products/22376.html">Strapya World</a>, sans shipping. As of posting this, there were only four units in stock, so you might want to get on that quickly if you covet such treats.<br /><br />We just hope there's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/12/everyone-hates-the-zigzag/">not too many zigzags</a>.<br /><br />[Update: I just found out that the chocolate isn't actually edible! (Hear that? It's the sound of my heart breaking.) Sorry if I got any of your hopes up, too!]<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.aboutcolonblank.com/2008/04/17/tetris-chocolate-bar-puzzle/">About:Blank</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/tetris-like-chocolates-make-our-mouths-water/">Tetris-like chocolates make our mouths water [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Apr 2008 22:30:00 EST. <br />We'll be honest -- as charming as it was, we found ourselves struggling to understand how the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda">Zelda</a> universe was an appropriate choice of subject for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/its-dangerous-to-put-your-teapot-on-the-table-alone-take-this/">themed, crochet teapot mat</a>. Eventually, we concluded that, hey, Link does <em>occasionally drink potions</em> in his games, right? And you can also drink ... what? Yes! <em>Tea</em>! Ahem.<br /><br />Anyway, this Triforce-branded cutting board from Etsy user <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5733374">1337motif</a> ... we're stumped. Totally at a loss. There's just no reasonable connection between <em>Zelda </em>games and cutting boards. Then again, we're yet to find a more awesome way to chop vegetables, so we'll roll with it. Cough up $125 (yes) and it's yours.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://hawtymcbloggy.com/2008/04/08/link-needs-a-good-home-cooked-meal/">HawtyMcBloggy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/its-dangerous-to-chop-vegetables-on-an-unprotected-surface-alon/">It's dangerous to chop vegetables on an unprotected surface alone! It's a question we've all pondered at least once in our lifetimes: in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon"><em>Pok&eacute;mon</em></a> universe, is everyone a vegetarian, or do people actually eat Pok&eacute;mon? Are certain Pok&eacute;mon bred for mass consumption? And, perhaps more importantly, which Pok&eacute;mon are the most delicious?<br /><br />We're elated that GameDaily has actually put some time into this twisted, wonderful thought process, and come up with a <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/galleries/top-ten-pokemom-wed-like-to-eat/?page=1">list of the ten Pocket Monsters that they'd most like to cook up</a>. Some of these tasty critters are easier to come by than others; we personally see Magikarp as the salmon of the <em>Pok&eacute;mon</em> world, while preparing a Peking-style Psyduck may be a bit more difficult. Actually, we're getting a bit hungry just thinking about this. Maybe we'll head out to the grocery store and pick up some fried Torchics for lunch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/which-pokemon-would-you-eat/">Which Pokémon would you eat?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 11:40:00 EST. Among the few guaranteed assurances that come with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gdc08/">GDC</a>, one is perhaps the most constant: in the precious minutes you have to eat -- assuming you have any minutes at all -- you will cherish whatever sustenance you can cram down your gullet. It is with this in mind that we decided to snap <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-as-retold-through-food/">pictures</a> of (almost) everything we managed to eat this week, thus bringing the masses one step closer to really being there. Without further ado, enjoy the various foodstuffs (and the many, many sandwiches) of GDC.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-as-retold-through-food/">GDC08 as retold through food</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-as-retold-through-food/#661877"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/gdc08-food-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Lunch: Tuesday, Feb 19" title="Lunch: Tuesday, Feb 19" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-as-retold-through-food/#661887"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/gdc08-food-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Lunch: Wendsday, February 20" title="Lunch: Wendsday, February 20" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-as-retold-through-food/#662032"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/gdc08-food-25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Dinner: Wednesday, February 20" title="Dinner: Wednesday, February 20" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-as-retold-through-food/#661885"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/gdc08-food-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Breakfast: Thursday, February 21" title="Breakfast: Thursday, February 21" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-as-retold-through-food/#661882"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/gdc08-food-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Breakfast: Thursday, February 21" title="Breakfast: Thursday, February 21" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/gdc08-as-retold-through-food/">GDC08 as retold through food</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 15:15:00 EST. It used to be that just getting a <a href="http://www.twin-galaxies.com">high score</a> was the be all and end all of game accomplishments. More recently, amassing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/how-a-681-day-achievement-streak-comes-to-an-end/">Achievement points</a> became the all-consuming passion of gamers. Now even that seems pass&eacute; as a new Japanese cell phone game rewards played with <a href="http://www.pinktentacle.com/2008/02/ippon-tsuri-catch-and-eat-fishing-by-phone/">real, raw fish</a> delivered right to their door.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.1turi.com/">Ippon Zuri</a> ("pole-and-line fishing" in English) lets DoCoMo users in Japan's Fukuoka area set bait, cast their lines and wait for the virtual fish to bite. When they do, a slot machine game appears and, if all three numbers match up, the fish is caught and, as Pink Tentacle <a href="http://www.pinktentacle.com/2008/02/ippon-tsuri-catch-and-eat-fishing-by-phone/">describes</a> it, "a message is then relayed to the wholesaler, who picks up the real-world equivalent from the local seafood market and delivers it, whole and raw, to the player's doorstep." Kind of reminds us of <a href="http://www.atariage.com/2600/archives/activision_patches.html">Activision's Atari 2600 badge program</a>, except updated for the new millennium ... and with raw fish!<br /><br />We think this is a great idea, and can't wait for the concept to be applied across the gaming world. Win a real trophy for success at virtual sports games! Win real cash for success at virtual game shows! Win a real disembodied skull for success at a first-person shooter! Er ... scratch that last one.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/02/14/for-reel-japanese-ph.html">BB Gadgets</a>]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/japanese-mobile-game-rewards-players-with-real-fish/">Japanese mobile game rewards players with real fish</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2008 18:00:00 EST. If you eat food, which is a given, and you aren't a vegan or lactose intolerant, you probably know that cheese is the best food ever. (The previous statement is a well-known fact, and is not up for debate.) Of course, cheese-based foods (well, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/were-sorry-but-your-princess-is-on-another-cupcake/">all foods</a>, for that matter) are always better when they relate to video games.<br /><br />Today's spotlight food relates to <em>Pac-Man</em>. No, we're not talking about <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sirber/299716153/">Babybel cheese</a> ... that would be too obvious. Instead, Jocelyn from Snack-or-Die found <a href="http://www.snackordie.com/2008/01/cheddar_pacman_crackers.html">this</a> neat recipe, which details how to make Pac-Man and pellet-shaped crackers. In case you're wondering what they taste like, think <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldfish_%28snack%29">Goldfish snacks</a>.<br /><br />If you have even the least bit of culinary skill and own the proper hardware, you owe it to yourself to make these crackers. The recipe makes the process seem pretty easy, and they look mighty tasty. <br /><em><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cookingmama">Cooking Mama</a></em>, eat your heart out.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/karmic-retribution-pac-man-gets-eaten-diy/">Karmic retribution: Pac-Man gets eaten (DIY)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 22:32:00 EST. Naturally then, combining the two results in the perfect lazy afternoon for us, but you have to be <em>careful</em>. As the DS involves rather a lot of touching, greasy foods such as pizza are automatically out, particularly as dirt and grime <em>loves</em> to accumulate on the edge of the touchscreen. This writer also prefers to avoid stuff that can drip easily -- as much as it saddens us, Coke and technology will never be BFF.<br /><br />With these ground rules in mind, I find there's nothing quite like Cool Ranch Doritos and Medium Salsa dip to complement a marathon DS session, while white seedless grapes provide a healthier, almost-as-good alternative. As part of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/30/nin-bento-makes-us-happy-we-have-to-eat-food-to-live/">bento challenge</a>, Livejournal, uh, "bentochallenge" community member mushmo made this awesome rice representation of a pink DS. Technically, it's a Phat, but we couldn't resist the pun in the title.<br /><br />The DS onigiri folds up to fit in its bento box, and is joined by shrimp, broccoli, carrots, and a hard-boiled egg to make a delicious meal for mushmo's lucky son. Honestly, we don't know if we'd be able to eat such a meticulously <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/crafts">crafted</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/zelda-week-possibly-the-best-gaming-cake-ever/">food item</a>. We're not sure if this is a good thing, per se, but the August issue of Wired magazine features a "Martha Stewart blowout" (never thought we'd write those words in the same sentence) with the queen of gracious living giving tips on a number of geek-related topics.<br /><br />In the spotlight: Martha shows us how to bake a Wii cake. Sounds ... yummy? Who cares, it's cake, and it looks like a Wii. We'll eat it. Hopefully <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/31/fortune-nintendo-is-beating-microsoft-and-sony/">another magazine</a> will catch on to this trend and get <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Lowell">Christopher Lowell</a> to show us how to make a Wii-shaped entrance to our verandah.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.infendo.com/wii/martha-stewart-makes-a-wii-cake-with-wired-magazine/">Infendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/21/martha-stewart-makes-an-edible-wii/">Martha Stewart makes an edible Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Jul 2007 10:26:00 EST. A little known fact: in the game industry, everything gets equated to food. Nintendo's Satoru Iwata <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/02/iwata-tackles-virtual-console-prices-wii-connect24/">did it</a>, as did <em>Metal Gear Solid </em>creator <a href="http://playstation3.joystiq.com/2005/05/31/hideo-kojima-talks-next-gen-steak-dinners/">Hideo Kojima</a> (though, later, he gave <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/19/from-steak-to-dvd-kojima-talks-next-gen/">new analogies</a>). Our newest public food statement comes from Sony's Jack Tretton in an interview <a href="http://gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/games/features/122988.shtml">with GamePro</a>, who unsurprisingly relates the PlayStation 3 to a Surf n' Turf (i.e. steak and lobster).<br /><br />The PS2 is "your favorite burger restaurant," and as for the rest? The Wii is "a lollipop, and I'm too old for lollipops," he said. "The other one [Xbox 360] I get sick from once in a while because the cook isn't always reliable." Red ring of burn! Su-Yin from <a href="http://cookingismypassion.blogspot.com/2007/05/geek-ful-cake.html">The Journal of a Girl who Loves To Cook</a> has crafted the most breathtaking Mario cake we've ever seen. The inspiration came when a friend spotted the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/19/three-tiered-mario-mushroom-cake-amazes/">Super Mario wedding cake</a> and said "Su Yin could do better than that!". So ... she did. As with any serious art project, the design began with a sketch and took several days to complete. The results, as you can see, are beyond stunning. Check out the gallery below and marvel at Su-Yin's ability to blend food, art, and geekery into one delicious dessert.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/su-yins-mario-cake/">Su-Yin's Mario cake</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/su-yins-mario-cake/#256540"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/img_8950_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/su-yins-mario-cake/#256539"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/img_8923_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/su-yins-mario-cake/#256538"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/img_8918_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/su-yins-mario-cake/#256537"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/img_8966_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/su-yins-mario-cake/#256536"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/collage2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/29/the-most-impressive-mario-cake-ever/">The most impressive Mario cake ... <div align="left">Talk about a supportive fiance, Flickr user <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cakecraft/sets/72157600080736777/">Cakecraft</a> baked a massive Alliance cake for her soon-to-be husband in honor of his new guild. It took her over 20 hours of grinding to get this sucker finished, and "is the equivalent of seven 9"x13" cakes." Wow, indeed.<br /><br />She does give a shoutout to the makers of the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/87916288@N00/403813216/in/photostream/">Horde cake</a>, which inspired her. Don't bother checking the taverns around Ironforge for this one, although she might make you one for enough gold.<br /></div>

This particular sequel, however, is somewhat of a surprise. <em>Shaberu! DS O-Ryouri Navi Marugoto Teikoku Hotel (Talking DS Cooking Navi Marugoto Teikoku Hotel)</em> is a new version of the game containing recipes from the chefs who cook in the prestigious Japanese hotel.<br /><br />We're thinking about picking up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/koei">Koei</a>'s latest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nongame">nongame</a>, since we'd love to try some gourmet Japanese cuisine. But we have a concern: isn't <em>Cooking Navi</em> supposed to be about basic recipes and helping regular people make them? Seriously, look at those <em>seven chefs</em> on the box. This interactive cookbook has the potential to be the hardest game on the system.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/05/cooking-navi-goes-high-end/">Cooking Navi goes high-end</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Apr 2007 12:00:00 EST. Some of them look like they're going to eat <em>you</em>! The set includes instructions on making your very own (somewhat creepy) rabbid cupcakes, and features pictures of the best efforts, and some of the not-so-successful. The secret? Bunny-themed cake pans for Easter cakes. Creative, we must admit ....<br /><br /><strong>See also:<br /></strong>

A recent <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5398230.stm">Electronic Arts study</a> concluded that commercial games can be effective teaching tools in the classroom. Last week, researchers at the University of Sydney <a href="http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2006Oct/gee20061002039054.htm">found</a> that automated dietary advice, similar to Amazon recommendations, reduced the amount of saturated fats in the goods purchased by the participants.<br /><br /> The two studies are not necessarily mutually exclusive: imagine a 3D platformer where your enemies all shared a common thread of containing copious amounts of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_fructose_corn_syrup#Health_effect_controversy">high fructose corn syrup</a>. Would you subconscious start avoiding foods that contain HFCS, or at least check the nutrition labels?<br /><br /><em>Yoshi's Fruit Cake?</em> <em>Veggie Burger Time?</em> <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=scrumdiddlyumptious">Scrumdiddly-umptious</a>.<br /><br /><strong>See Also:<br /></strong><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/25/w-virginia-to-put-ddr-in-all-765-public-schools/">W. His bride-to-be planned the cake, keeping it a secret until just before its unveiling. The entire creation -- short of the cake toppers -- was entirely edible. That means piranha plants, mushroom, everything. While the cake toppers weren't edible, they weren't easy to come by. They're part of the "Mario Family" series from Club Nintendo in Japan, only available by redeeming <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_Nintendo#Club_Nintendo_Japan">points</a> from Japanese Nintendo products.<br /><br />If they knew about our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/16/win-a-copy-of-limited-edition-gears-of-war-book/"><em>Gears of War</em> contest</a>, we're pretty sure the cake's <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/alttext/sets/72157594289496628/">Flickr entry</a> would take the, uh ... you know. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.boingboing.net/2006/09/18/super_mario_wedding_.html">Boing Boing</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/19/three-tiered-mario-mushroom-cake-amazes/">Three-tiered Mario mushroom cake amazes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Sep 2006 01:00:00 EST. The cataclysmic combination of gaming and gourmet yields some absolutely ingenious (even <em>delicious</em>) results and should easily satiate your appetite for a good laugh. From <em>Metal Gear Salads</em> and organized crime omelettes to the frightening discovery of an obtuse vending machine in one of the ages of <em>Myst</em>, the selection is well worth sampling. <br /><br />[Image by Overbite. After comparing the three next-gen systems to food in a rather famous <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=119580&amp;skip=yes">quote</a> a year ago, Hideo now has a new view on the subject.<br /><strong></strong><br /><em>"Now, the PlayStation 3 is like a movie theater for people who want to see this movie on the big screen with THX and 5.1 audio, even if they have to pay a high price. The Xbox 360 is DVD. Basically, you don't know what movie you want to see, so you go to the store and see if you can pick up a good one. The Wii is like a TV for when you're home and you don't know what you want to watch but you [want to] have that variety."<br /><br /></em>Yeahhhhh. Not really sure what that means, but Hideo has shown some major love for the Wii in the past, so it must be good.
