Now that Penny Arcade Adventures has finally landed, Joystiq got to sit down with Jerry Holkins (better known by his alter-ego Tycho Brahe) and discuss the creation of the game and how it has impacted the folks behind Penny Arcade. To call it an "in depth" interview would be a disservice to the term. There are literally pages and pages of information to be absorbed here, and frankly we won't attempt to encapsulate them. Rather, we suggest you simply head over to Joystiq and ingest it all for yourself. Seriously, go forth. Ingest.
Joystiq talks with Tycho about Penny Arcade Adventures originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 May 2008 14:00:00 EST. The boyfriend, Harve Johnson, reportedly used a video game controller.

We've received numerous tips and followed various developments about this horrific story over the past few days. We've decided to post about it now, in part, to open up a space for shared discussion through which we may experience relief. However base it may seem in light of the real tragedy, many of us are particularly concerned about the opportunity for mainstream media and those ignorant persons who target our industry to sensationalize a trivial fact about Darisabel's death. That Johnson had in his hand a game controller is no evidence that the game controller and, specifically, the games he likely played with the controller were in any way a catalyst for his heinous crime. But that's a message we fear might be spread.

In our struggle to comprehend the merciless death of an innocent 2-year-old we might grasp at understandings that are wrong. The best you can do is to know and uphold that video games did not cause this unimaginable expression of violence. Please feel free to share your own respectful thoughts and feelings in the comments below.
Editorial: 2-year-old dies after beating originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 11:30:00 EST. This past week had all three of Penny Arcade's comic had to do with 360 titles, namely Stranglehold's demo, BioShock's demo and street date breakery. Soft Targets gives insight into the Precision Tequila Bomb, and Gabe's definition of "headshot," and the Achievement that should be awarded for proficiency therein. Our Continuing Series is a public service announcement to parents and the dangers of their kids splicing with plasmids. Finally, A Dark Recipe goes to show the lengths at which Tycho would go to secure a copy of Bioshock before the street date, obviously he didn't hear about our contest.

Read: Soft Targets
Read: Our Continuing Series
Read: A Dark Recipe
A week's worth of 360 related Penny Arcade comics originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 18 Aug 2007 13:00:00 EST. Apparently, putting together a videogame based on a tortilla chip is pushing the envelope for ridiculous ideas, intense experiences notwithstanding. While the idea of getting your Arcade title's concept published on Xbox Live Marketplace is definitely a cool one, the necessity to incorporate some Doritos branding into the gameplay does seem a little cheesy. Do you mind the product placement suggested for submissions to the contest, or do you think the opportunity is too good to complain about such details?
Penny Arcade questions Doritos Unlock Xbox contest originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2007 08:00:00 EST. Perhaps the source material actually adds to the game, the straightforward Achievements, or maybe it's the almost non existent learning curve that has pick up and play accessibility. The one thing we can learn from Gabe, though, is that just because you can have fun playing "kids games", we wouldn't recommend trying to find other kids to play with.
PA: Surf's Up not just for kids. originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 13:15:00 EST. Retro titles from our "mispent youth", as Peter Moore so elegantly put it, are usually somewhere in the neighbourhood of 15 to 25 years old. Sure, they may get reskinned with some extra pixels per sprite, but the vast majority are the same game they were when they were on early consoles or in cabinets. Should they be treated the same by reviewers as retail games, or should the fact that these are pieces of gaming history give them a little grace? After all, if you don't like retro titles, haven't played the original game, or didn't enjoy the title, you could always not buy it.
Tycho: Retro games shouldn't be reviewed originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 23:45:00 EST. Unfortunately, other types gaming don't have this, and when you start blurring the line between such forms of entertainment, there's bound to be a clash, right? Well, the guys at PA seem to think so with the recent announcement of Halo Clix. HBO community member turned Bungie employee KP seems pretty convinced about their source material. In particular, the Troll, and the potential hazards that the RNA Corporation has to take into account when employing such a metahuman. In Tycho's post, he gives his take on the game's party system and gameplay and continues to support and recommend the title in spite of mediocre reviews. Either way, he reminds us that the demo is coming out tomorrow. Speaking of, are any of you still on the fence going to download the demo and give it a shot? We know that some of us here and Fanboy Towers made promises in regards to giving the demo the attention it deserves.
Penny Arcade takes on Shadowrun's races originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 10:30:00 EST. The first comic dealt with their unexpected enjoyment of playing the beta and the adverse affects found therein. The second one takes a look at an X3F favorite, the Spartan Laser, and the hijinks that will inevitably occur upon acquisition. Tycho's news posts for both give insight into some of the highlights of the game to them. Obviously, that's slightly out of character, although it is revealed in the accompanying podcast that Mike actually has played the real life counterpart, and much to everyone's surprise, hated the game.

Today's strip is a continuation of the storyline, but no longer relates to Catan anymore, for obvious reasons. We spent the better part of our weekend trading wool for ore, what about you? Expect a full X3F review on Catan to come later this week.
Gabe plays Catan ... at least, we think it's Gabe originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 May 2007 10:00:00 EST. While, on the other hand, the guys over at Penny Arcade told their account of running into someone who was just downright creepy. To their credit, they did show a good idea on a feature that should be added to a future dash update when filing a complaint just doesn't cut. So, make the jump, have a laugh, and maybe shed a tear for those who run into people like this daily. That all being said, if this really weirded you out, don't worry, we got something lined up for you that'll brighten your day.
PA shows the less-than-sexy side of Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 15:30:00 EST. The California teen's father subsequently contacted the FBI. The middle schooler was later arrested and several items were confiscated from his home, including a pistol and his Xbox 360. Some find the claim that the 360 is "evidence" to be rather dubious, and that is the subject of today's comic. Oh, and in case you're wondering why the man on the right is devouring what appears to be a necktie, it is in fact Fruit by the Foot. The idea: to make gamers more aware of the ratings system in a hope that this knowledge will somehow be transferred -- through some kind of filial osmosis -- unto their guileless parents.

ESRB president Patricia Vance gushes, "In order for the campaign to resonate with the gamer audience, we sought to have a little 'edge' to the creative and let's face it, Penny Arcade comics give a whole new meaning to the term 'comic mischief!'" Indeed. That's why we're hopeful a certain fruit-processing character assumes his rightful throne educating the masses on the finer points of M-rated behavior. In the meantime, we have Sarah here and the Andersons after the break representin' the letter E, with no mention of the additional characters in their press release (PDF).

(Update: added new, higher-res screens that are -- get this -- actually legible. Thanks go to Gabe at PA for uploading them. I'll let him say it: "I was disappointed at the resolution of the images they released. Like I said everyone here is extremely proud of these ads and so I'll go ahead and post some better versions. These are designed to be read in a magazine. The idea is that kids will actually be turning the page around in order to read the text. Don't have themag, then check out the "Director's Cut"version at their website. So, what is revealed in this tell-all, gut-spilling, interview?

They talk abouttheir spat with Harlan Ellison ("... his audience there erupted and he glared at me like he wanted to choke meonstage."); their feud with Scott McCloud ("We're best friends. He came to my birthday party."); gamesthey're playing ("... what I've been doing at night lately is playing Marble Blast Ultra."); theirsecret fantasies ("You had to punch guys until their clothes came off. Every time you'd punch them, like, theirpants would fly off."); their Bioware module; their favoritecomic ("They Hail From Canidon"); PAX ("Wewanted to make a show where gamers could get the same kind of experience we got at E3."); and Child's Play.

If this is the stuff that didn't make it into the magazine, that means the rest of the interview must haveencompassed the sum total of their collective life experiences; a dump of their consciousness, ready and waiting for apost-human existence.
Penny Arcade guys reveal all originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Apr 2006 13:57:00 EST.
