<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/brink/">Brink</a></em>, the frantic first-person shooter being brought to us by Splash Damage, has so much going on that at first I struggled to stay alive. During my hour-long playthrough I had a game developer over my shoulder helping me along the way and, by the end, I almost couldn't leave. For anyone who has played <em>Team Fortress 2</em>, <em>Brink</em> will feel very familiar.<br />
<br />
This isn't surprising as Paul Wedgwood -- the CEO of Splash Damage and the game's director -- ran a <em>Team Fortress</em> clan for years. Other Splash Damage games such as <em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory</em> and <em>Enemy Territory: Quake Wars</em> have followed the same class-based combat of <em>Team Fortress</em>. <em>Brink</em> is set up much in the same manner with four classes: a soldier, medic, engineer and operative. But <em>Brink</em> takes that formula a step further than <em>TF2</em>. And then 10 more.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-bfg-2011/">Brink (BFG 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-bfg-2011/#4063601"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/cleaningup_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-bfg-2011/#4063602"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/disguisedescort_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-bfg-2011/#4063603"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/fixerupper_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-bfg-2011/#4063604"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/herecomethefuzz_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-bfg-2011/#4063605"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/viewtoakill_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/20/brink-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Brink preview: Team Floatress</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/20/brink-preview/">Brink preview: Team Floatress</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Apr 2011 19:15:00 EST. Are you one of these folks who don't even realize there's a "multiplayer button" in your first-person shooters? After spending hours with the single-player campaign, you shelve the game and press onward, eschewing time with multiplayer for other, more solitary experiences? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/splash-damage">Splash Damage</a> head Paul Wedgwood wants to change your attitude, telling <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/splash-damage-paul-wedgwood-interview">Eurogamer</a> in an interview that his studio's upcoming FPS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brink"><em>Brink</em></a> will do just that. <br /> <br /> "It's our goal from the outset to incidentally teach people to be good at multiplayer shooters while they're playing our single-player shooter," he says. Apparently, <em>Brink</em> will offer in-game rewards (double XP, for instance) to players willing to take their game online. "At a certain point in the game we say to them, 'Why don't you just try co-op and see how you go? For this next mission we're going to give you twice the number of experience points if you play co-operatively with somebody else.'" Thankfully though, he assures the internet-less among us (how are you reading this?!) that there's plenty of game in <em>Brink</em> without having to go online. "Your experience through it, imagining you have no internet connection should, for us to have achieved our goal, be as compelling as any other triple-A shooter." We'll find out if his plan works when <em>Brink</em> arrives sometime next year.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-xbox-360-ps3-pc/">Brink</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-xbox-360-ps3-pc/#2052576"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/founders_tower_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Concept art ? Container City" title="Concept art ? Container City" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-xbox-360-ps3-pc/#2052577"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/mantle_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-xbox-360-ps3-pc/#2052578"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/nothing_to_declare_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-xbox-360-ps3-pc/#2052579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/robot_escort_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/brink-xbox-360-ps3-pc/#2220300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/2009-08-19_15-20-59_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/27/splash-damages-brink-wants-to-change-your-mind-on-multiplayer/">Splash Damage's Brink wants to change your mind on multiplayer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Nov 2009 22:00:00 EST.
