We want everyone to be in the right frame of mind when watching this new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/red-dead-redemption"><em>Red Dead Redemption</em></a> trailer, so first we'd ask that you to watch this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QgjdRqr3Ik">gameplay clip from <em>Mad Dog McCree</em></a>. Now, had you told us back in 1990 that <em>this</em> is where we'd be in 20 years, we're not sure we could have handled it. A Western-themed game with <em>digital</em> characters, and not <em>real</em> FMV actors? Are you <em>insane</em>, sir?<br />
<br />
Alas, here we are, as the digital John Marston somehow finds himself embroiled in revolution. The trailer doesn't explain exactly <em>who</em> is revolting from <em>what</em> (it sounds a bit like the Mexican Revolution, which began around the time <em>Redemption</em> takes place), but it does look like train heists will be involved, so we're <em>completely</em> down.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/red-dead-redemption-looks-revolutionary-in-new-trailer/">Red Dead Redemption looks 'revolutionary' in new trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 May 2010 11:41:00 EST. The modern jazzification (<em>totally</em> not a made-up word) of retro adventure title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/beneath-a-steel-sky"><em>Beneath a Steel Sky</em></a> has been a fairly lucrative move on Revolution Software's part, as managing director Charles Cecil says (via <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/beneath-a-steel-sky-on-track-for-20k-sales-in-first-month">GI.biz</a>) iPhone remake <em>Beneath a Steel Sky Remastered</em> is on track to sell 20,000 copies in its first month -- and that's not including the first week of the month, as it wasn't available in the App store until October 8. <br />
<br />
But it's just a stepping stone to greater financial success, Cecil says. He anticipates the game will sell around 70,000 copies in its first year of release, eventually peaking at 100,000 copies sold in its lifetime. Cecil credits the Apple model (cheap, easy to use and easier to purchase content than it is to pirate) and Revolution's ability to exploit its own games "in a way that you could never do at a mainstream publisher." He also says that daily sacrifices to the almighty Lord Kromdor certainly didn't hurt.*<br />
<br />

Hot off the announcement this morning of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/molyneux-announces-fable-iii-at-gamescom/"><em>Fable 3</em> coming to Xbox 360 in 2010</a>, Microsoft Game Studios of Europe head <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/peter-molyneux">Peter Molyneux</a> sat down to discuss the franchise a bit with <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/peter-molyneux-part-two_4?page=1">GamesIndustry.biz</a>. Though the acutely over-promising developer kept tight-lipped about details on the upcoming sequel, he did let slip that <em>Fable 3</em> will question "some of the foundations that <em>Fable</em> [the franchise] is built on." <br /><br />We're not sure <em>exactly</em> what that means, but we already know that the gesture system has been given a major facelift. The moral choice aims to be a lot deeper than in <em>Fable 2</em> as well, with Molyneux saying promises you make in your rise to power will affect your position as the people's ruler. We'll be sure to remember these promises when the game releases next year (that's three promises so far, Molyneux!). <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fable-iii/">Fable 3</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fable-iii/#2218330"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/fable3logo1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fable-iii/#2702187"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/fable_iii_screenshot_bowerstone_industrial_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fable-iii/#2702188"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/fable_iii_screenshot_cave_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fable-iii/#2702189"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/fable_iii_screenshot_dragging_beggar_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fable-iii/#2218328"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/fable3art1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/fable-3-will-question-the-foundations-on-which-fable-is-built-s/">Fable 3 will question the foundations on which Fable is built, says Molyneux</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 15:57:00 EST. Revolution Software is stepping up efforts to bring back some of its classic adventure IPs. Founder Charles Cecil currently has two games in mind: <em>Beneath a Steel Sky</em> and <a href="http://www.nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/broken-sword"><em>Broken Sword</em></a>. The latter series is already undergoing a revival via next month's <em><a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/ubisoft-resurrecting-broken-sword-on-ds-and-wii-next-year/">Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templars (Director's Cut)</a></em>; however, Cecil tells <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/24-02-2009-10724.html">VideoGamer</a> this might only be the beginning.<br /> <br />If the Director's Cut of <span style="font-style: italic;">Shadows of the Templars</span> for Wii and DS are successful, Revolution might consider doing more Director's Cuts for the other <span style="font-style: italic;">Broken Sword</span> titles. This might even entail completely overhauling the 3D <span style="font-style: italic;">Broken Swords</span> (numbers three and four in the series) into 2D versions for Nintendo's systems. A movie tie-in game could also be in the works, as Cecil reveals that Radar Pictures is interested in doing a <span style="font-style: italic;">Broken Sword </span>film. <br /><br /> In the case of <em>Beneath a Steel Sky </em> - another adventure title from the '90s - Cecil says it's "probably going to happen." He's just claiming everyone's too busy to work on it right now. Well, of course; with all those possible <span style="font-style: italic;">Broken Sword</span> projects, it sounds like Revolution will be busy for awhile.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/revolution-considering-new-beneath-a-steel-sky-broken-sword-gam/">Revolution considering new Beneath a Steel Sky, Broken Sword games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Feb 2009 22:00:00 EST. It's been well over two years since Nintendo unveiled its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/27/nintendo-revolution-now-called-wii/">"revolutionary" console name</a> (2 years, 3 months and 17 days to be precise). But, much like truthiness, it'd be silly to think it had been the first time the term had been used. Just ask Wii Yatani, a 26-year old New Yorker who experienced all the <em>oh-so clever</em> urine puns decades before the House of Mario. MTV's Stephen Totilo has a <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1592727/20080813/id_0.jhtml">profile on Yatani</a> and how the waggle-inducing name has changed his name's perspective. <br /><br />Additionally, according to Totilo, there were over 1900 pre-Nintendo Wii references in the newspaper and magazine database <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LexisNexis">Nexis</a>. From a Singaporean record-setting stair climber to a Papa New Guinea lieutenant, Wii has traveled the globe. And although Nintendo hasn't attributed an exact definition, Yatani's Wii is derived from two Kanji characters meaning "universe" and "willpower."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/wii-before-wii/">'Wii' before Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 22:40:00 EST. <br />Evidence of a <em>Broken Sword</em> game for the DS is mounting. First, there was <a href="http://www.revolution.co.uk/_forum.php?topic=4454&amp;open=1&amp;neuron=1&amp;page=0">a petition</a> posted by Revolution Software designer Tony Warriner to register player interest (which, predictably enough, was sky high). Then, a <em>Broken Sword</em> game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/gamestop-predicts-endwar-broken-sword/">cropped up</a> in the database of the rarely wrong GameStop. And now, Revolution Managing Director Charles Cecil has dropped some heavy-handed hints about such a title.<br /><br />Speaking to Videogamer.com, Cecil admitted that the petition was "really inspirational," and that the DS was "an ideal platform" for the point and click genre. His final comment on the matter was far more suggestive, however: "I just wish that we were having this interview in about a month's time," he told VideoGamer.com's Wesley Yin-Poole. "Then you'd be asking me much more direct questions!" Hmm.<br /><br />Even though <em>Broken Sword</em> for the DS remains a rumor, we're struggling to think of other ways in which Revolution can hint at the game without, you know, <em>announcing it</em>. Petition posted by developer? Check. Appearance of <em>Broken Sword</em> in GameStop records? Check. And now Cecil's comments? Frankly, you don't have to be a heavily pixellated, world-saving law graduate called George to figure out where this might be going.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/broken-sword-dev-continues-to-mercilessly-tease-us/">Broken Sword dev continues to mercilessly tease us</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 16:15:00 EST. Check out this janky image on the right; it's almost as if someone tried to mash together <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=fire+emblem&amp;searchsubmit=">Fire Emblem</a></em> with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ageofempires">Age of Empires: Age of Kings</a></em>, but somehow messed it up.<br /><br />Of course, no one plays <em>Civ</em> for its graphics, and, according to a recent interview with IGN, Firaxis made sure to leave in the strategy title's core mechanics. The DS release will, for the most part, have the same mechanics as the 360 and PS3 versions, except with a mostly 2D presentation. You'll still have 16 civilizations to choose from and a robust online multiplayer experience with two-player head-to-head, four-player free-for-all, and team battle modes. End your turn and head past the break for a couple more screenshots.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/civilization-revolution-has-no-alibi-its-ugly/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Civilization Revolution has no alibi (it's ugly)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/civilization-revolution-has-no-alibi-its-ugly/">Civilization Revolution has no alibi (it's ugly)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 10:30:00 EST. Well, we're probably not alone, since it's a big seller, but we mean <em>here</em>. We've played console versions before and have been less than impressed, but we can't help but hope that this time, it'll be as smooth as, say, <em>snot on glass</em>. <div align="left">Konami has released some screens of their new Wii-style <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em>, entitled <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/ddr-hottest-party-site-launches/">Dance Dance Revolution HOTTEST PARTY</a>. </em>And it mostly looks like a DDR game, with some small adjustments. <em>Hottest Party </em>(we're going to stop with the caps, if that's all right) includes the same Free Play and Diet Modes as other <em>DDR </em>games, but also includes simultaneous four-player mode for people with really big living rooms.<br /><br />The most noticeable adjustment is head size. That's funny, and a little weird, but totally cosmetic and won't get in the way of anyone's Dance Dance Revolving. What's a little more interesting than cranial embiggening is the Wiimote/Nunchuk usage. There seem to be special arrows that instruct players to point their hands in a certain direction, much like <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samba_De_Amigo">Samba de Amigo</a>.</em> Sometimes even the on-screen characters hold Wiimotes and Nunchuks.<br /><br />The dance pad has made it to the Wii pretty much unscathed, with no <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/the-wii-guitar-hero-controller-first-image/">Wiimote-shaped cavities</a> or anything. It's a basic dance pad in a Wii color scheme. It appears to be wired, probably USB. We didn't need more-- with the extra waggling, this game seems complicated enough!<br /><br /></div>

<span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Five_of_the_worst_handheld_accessories_ever_PICS'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span>Portable game systems are completely self-contained. Unlike home systems, which require a TV, multiple outlets, and a separate controller unit, handhelds contain everything you need to play games, built right in to the unit. They are self-reliant. They are also-- and this goes without saying-- portable. They're designed to be <span style="font-style: italic;">small</span> so you can carry them around.<br /><br />Why, then, do jackasses feel the need to make accessories for handhelds? Accessories needlessly add bulk to Game Boys, effectively exiling them from casual pocket-drops. Here are five of the most pointless things you could ever graft onto a handheld system. We're giving a lot of attention to the Game Boy Color, as it turned out to be a focal point for idiotic doodads. Hopefully, these companies are still tired from their furious crap-assembling, and will largely pass over the DS.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/five-handheld-accessories-you-should-continue-living-without/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Five handheld accessories you should continue to live without</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/five-handheld-accessories-you-should-continue-living-without/">Five handheld accessories you should continue to live without</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 18:16:00 EST. The resulting Level Up article highlights some of Nintendo's recent examples of this strategy, including the unfortunate news this week regarding <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/new-e3-to-not-have-playable-smash-bros-on-display/">Super Smash Bros.</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/no-metroid-prime-3-wi-fi-for-you/">Metroid Prime 3</a>.</em> Did anyone else think it was weird whenever a big announcement like this would come out <em>before E3</em>?<br /><br />It makes sense, though, to let <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum">us all</a> exhaust ourselves talking about bad news before the show starts. Then we can start being impressed by the <em>actual show content.</em><br /><br />One interesting note: this implies that Nintendo knew how their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/27/confirmed-revolution-now-called-wii/">choice of console name</a> was going to be received. We still have trouble with the name, and we're ... you know.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/05/nintendos-annual-pre-e3-bummer/">Nintendo's annual pre-E3 bummer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Jul 2007 13:35:00 EST. If we <em>really</em> wanted to arouse some vitriol, we'd say it's not worth having even then, but that would really just be flame-baiting for its own sake. We don't even <em>actually</em> feel that way.<br /><br />What we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wwu">want to know</a> is, is it okay in your mind to have a game like this that <em>absolutely</em> depends on another game to be fun? Among them:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/nms-multiplayer-mayhem-with-mario-party-8/"><em>Mario Party 8</em></a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/nms-scoring-goals-in-mario-strikers-charged/"><em>Super Mario Strikers: Charged</em></a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/nms-big-brain-academy-hands-on/"><em>Big Brain Academy</em></a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/nms-pokemon-battle-revolution-impressions/"><em>Pokemon Battle Revolution</em></a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/nms-up-close-and-personal-with-the-bigs/"><em>The Bigs</em></a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/nms-cutting-a-rug-in-boogie/"><em>Boogie</em></a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/23/my-word-coach-lets-you-be-like-us-plus-ds-to-wii-connectivity/"><em>My Word Coach</em></a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/24/more-rabbid-stuff/"><em>Rayman: Raving Rabbids 2</em></a></li>
</ul>
We're most jazzed for <em>Strikers</em>, especially after reading such effulgent impressions from <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/">Penny Arcade</a>. But which game shown at NMS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wwu">excited you</a> the most? If you were stuck on an island and could only have one game ... you know, assuming you had a Wii and a couple Wiimotes, and a nice TV ... maybe some nunchuks, oh, and the sensor bar, and I guess you'd need a standard 120 W outlet somewhere in the sand ... and a decent supply of food and water, or you wouldn't spend your time playing the Wii ... you know what, never mind.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/26/wii-warm-up-nms-excitement/">Wii Warm Up: NMS excitement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 May 2007 10:00:00 EST. If you weren't "lucky" enough to have a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/18/bubble-bobble-bursts-onto-retail-shelves-with-busted-cartridges/">glitched copy</a> of <em>Bubble Bobble Revolution </em>and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/codemasters-fixes-bubble-bobble-hands-out-swag/">free <em>Rainbow Islands</em></a> that came with the replacement, you can get <em>Rainbow Islands</em> now for a very reasonable price. Gamestop is offering Codemasters' sequel for $9.99 new, no broken <em>Bobbles</em> included. It's backordered on the website (which has happened <em>since we started writing the story</em>) but it may be available in a local store or following a restock online.<br /><br />$10 is just about the right price for a game with a <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/rainbowislandsrevolution?q=rainbow%20islands%20revolution">Metascore of 54</a>. The original <em>Rainbow Islands</em> is worth like 500 million imaginary Metascore points, and if playing this one even evokes the arcade game a little, it's worth it. Also, $10 is like 1/6 of a copy of <em><a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/mobilesuitgundam?q=gundam">Gundam: Crossfire</a>. </em>When you think of it that way, it's quite the bargain!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.cheapassgamer.com/">CAG</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/rainbow-islands-revolution-for-10/">Rainbow Islands Revolution for $10</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 May 2007 17:05:00 EST. We thought the <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/ffv">weekly video spotlight</a> might offer a good chance to look back at some of the videos, from the Wii's first ad to some fanmade videos both for and against the name switch.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/friday-video-we-said-we-wanted-a-revolution/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Friday Video: We said we wanted a revolution ....</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/friday-video-we-said-we-wanted-a-revolution/">Friday Video: We said we wanted a revolution ....</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 19:00:00 EST. <br />It may seem like we've been talking about it forever, but it was just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/27/nintendo-revolution-now-called-wii/">a year ago today</a> that Nintendo revealed the console formerly known as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/09/15/its-its-its-the-revolution/">Revolution</a> would henceforth be called the Wii. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/28/poll-results-tepid-reaction-to-the-wii-naming/">Immediate</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/28/real-people-speak-out-about-wii/">reactions</a> ranged from <a href="http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-23,GGGL:en&amp;q=wii+name+site%3Ajoystiq.com">derisive</a> and <a href="http://dsrevolution.com/article.php?articleid=1051">disbelieving</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/29/nintendo-invokes-good-names-to-defend-a-bad-one/">defensive</a> on the part of Nintendo itself, but by the time <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/engadget-and-joystiqs-live-coverage-of-nintendos-wii-e3-event/">Nintendo's E3 press conference</a> rolled around the initial furor had already subsided into a gentle buzz of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/01/the-wii-zeitgeist-via-ytmnd/">Internet jokes</a>.<br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/27/nintendo-revolution-now-called-wii/"><br />At the time</a>, we confidently predicted that, eventually, "this new name will seem as nifty, familiar and as comfortable as that silly controller once it's all said and done." Well, were we right? Are you able to mention the Wii without snickering like a schoolgirl, or do you still feel vaguely uncomfortable talking about Nintendo's latest console. It's an exhaustive Pokedex of the new creatures, and includes name, type, abilities, location, and information about evolution. <br /><br />What strikes us as we look at this list is how weird the names of Pokemon have gotten. Maybe it's because we've had ten years or so to get used to the older names, but the new ones are jarringly nonsensical. And lo did the <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=97127">voices</a> of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/27/confirmed-revolution-now-called-wii/">million gamers</a> rise in a chorus of, "WTF?! Wii?? OMG, it's so over for Nintendo!"<br /><br />Obviously, we were wrong. Oh, sure, not everyone thought the name was a bad idea, but it was such an overwhelming majority that the dissenters hardly mattered. A year later, however, it's become apparent that the name that curled so many lips was actually a brilliant move, marketing-wise. But no harm, no foul; we all <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/26/wii-warm-up-so-how-is-the-name/">already admitted</a> that we overreacted. But this strange anniversary still seems a good time to look back at not just the name change, but everything about the Wii. These days, analysts are predicting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/25/analyst-predicts-two-more-years-of-wii-shortages/">epic Wii shortages</a>, whereas eight months ago, it was far more popular to predict the Wii to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/17/analyst-downplays-wii-gets-eaten-by-nintendo-fans/">lag behind</a> both the PS3 and the 360. How has your overall attitude changed in the past year? Is there anything <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wwu">you think</a> or predict now that runs counter to your mindset last April?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/wii-warm-up-its-been-a-year/">Wii Warm Up: It's been a year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 09:00:00 EST. In Japan, obviously, since there are no arcades in the US.<br /><br />Here's how (it looks like) it works: you buy random packs of coins, each one corresponding to a Pokemon. Then you set them down on the machine, the machine "senses" your coins, and then they appear, ready for battling! Then some older kids run by and steal your coins.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/remember-pokemon-theyre-back-in-pog-form/">Remember Pokemon? Then Nintendo <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/27/confirmed-revolution-now-called-wii/">announced</a> that the console's real name would be Wii, and the backlash rocked the media and gaming community. <br /><br />Also, there were a lot of anatomical jokes.<br /><br />But here we are, not quite a year later, basking in the success of the new system ... when we can stop <em>playing</em> it, that is. We've had a little time to get used to the new name, but we <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wwu">have to ask</a> -- how is it? Do you like "Wii" now? Does it suit the system? Or has the Wii succeeded thus far in <em>spite</em> of the name?<br /><br />We also recommend going back and looking at the comments on that old post, as they're certain to make interesting reading alongside what is said here today.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/26/wii-warm-up-so-how-is-the-name/">Wii Warm Up: So how is the name?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Jan 2007 09:00:00 EST. We've been waiting so long that it hardly seems real, but there's no time to waste. We have to make plans for the penultimate event: the act of obtaining the Wii. The <em>ultimate</em> event is, of course, getting it home safely and plugging it all in. But first ... parties! Camping! Meteor showers! The popping of champagne bottles (if you're doing this, can we come over?)! Where will you be come midnight, November 19? We want to know.<br /><br />The Wii Fanboy staff will be positioned hither and yon, jockeying for our own sainted items, and will we provide as much live and almost-live coverage as we can cram onto the site from various wifi hotspots. At least one of our minions (don't you wish you knew who?) will be on the ground in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/12/t-minus-seven-days-times-square-coverage/">Times Square</a>. But enough about us. We want to know about you, dear reader. Where will you be at the moment of truth? Tell us, tell each other, network and plan to meet up. Remember: it's harder to trample new friends, so make nice and try not to stampede when the clock slides on over to midnight on Sunday.<br /><br />It's been fun, anticipating the Wii with everyone. We've talked about our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/01/wii-anticipation-preparing-a-room/">homes</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/08/wii-anticipation-show-us-those-miis/">ourselves</a>, and our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/20/wii-anticipation-the-games-edition/">plans for games</a>. Now that we're on the brink of fulfilling our motion-sensing dreams, we feel a little ... empty. It's been a long road from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/15/the-revolution-begins/">beginning</a> until now, and yet it all feels somehow like a rehearsal. The real show doesn't begin until Sunday, and what a show it's going to be.<br /><br />But before we look ahead, let's recap where we've been.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/wii-anticipation-preparing-for-launch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii anticipation: preparing for launch</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/wii-anticipation-preparing-for-launch/">Wii anticipation: preparing for launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 15:13:00 EST. While all of the updates are media-related, they still manage to reveal some secrets the game was hiding. We've done the responsible thing and busted out the bullet points because, frankly, there are a lot of updates.<br />

Now, the page mentions a need for software on the DS, yet does not tell if this software will be included with the Wii game, downloadable from the Wii, one of the DS games, or need to be separately purchased. Personally, we're assuming it'll be downloadable, but the article does make mention of it acting much in the way Wi-Fi does in <em>Pokemon Diamond &amp; Pearl</em>. <br /><br />The site also mentions that you can bring some of your Pokemon from <em>Pokemon Diamond &amp; Pearl</em> into the Wii game through the use of '<a href="http://www.pokemon.co.jp/game/ds/pbr_sp/pass.html">coliseum mode</a>.' This allows you to bring 6 of those Pokemon into the game and persistently record their battle information through <em>Pokemon Battle Revolution</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/30/pokemon-battle-revolution-site-gets-plenty-of-updates/">Pokemon Battle Revolution site gets plenty of updates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 12:55:00 EST. The DS is to be used as controller, it turns out, allowing players to choose actions and view stats on pertinent Pokemon while the battle plays out on their television set. Sounds good to us, but we'd like to see some more features utilized between the handheld and console. The game is to release during the Japanese launch window for the Wii and is scheduled for a 2007 release in North America.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/19/ds-controls-pokemon-battle-revolution/">DS controls Pokemon Battle Revolution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Oct 2006 11:45:00 EST. For instance, on the heels of the <em>SmackDown</em> "cancellation" news, certain outlets would love to make people believe that all of the developers are just throwing in the towel and pulling support. In reality though, nothing was cancelled at all!<br /><br />Like <a href="http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/2006/07/26/ps3_doubters_get_desperate.html">this</a> write-up suggests, the summer is slow and Sony's next-gen console is an easy target for quick publicity (or just malicious take-downs). We're not advocating that anything critical which is said about the PS3 is unfounded, but use your head next time you read something about the console and if you feel like it's blown out of proportion, dismiss it as such.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/27/detractors-of-the-ps3-reach-out-grab-nothing/">Detractors of the PS3 reach out, grab nothing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jul 2006 12:45:00 EST. After Nintendo's powerful showing at E3, most people seem to have gotten used to saying the new name without breaking a sweat or breaking into laughter, content in knowing that the name means little in the face of a game like <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em>. The folks at CNET must not have played it, then.<br /><br />In their "<a href="http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11524_7-6548835-1.html?tag=txt">Worst Tech of Q2 2006</a>" article, CNET reserves the ninth spot for the Wii, awarding it with "Worst name change." Their justification is short, noting that "'Nintendo Revolution' sounds cool. 'Nintendo Wii' sounds dumb. That's about all there is to say." Well, fair enough ... coming from a website that sounds like something you catch fish with! ZING!<br /><br />On a more serious note, we also preferred the Revolution, but to put the name mame on the same list as Segway Polo and iPod imitations is just <em>mean</em>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://wii.vggen.com/news/news.php?id=1645">VGGEN</a>, thanks AssemblyLineHuman!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/11/cnet-still-not-over-it/">CNET still not over it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Jul 2006 21:07:00 EST. The details involve a fully-fledged IM system featuring buddy icons, in-game messaging (via text or voice chat), and web-based storage of the user profile (i.e. Nintendo's servers). All the details can be viewed within the patent's claims.<br /><br />You can see the similarities between Nintendo's patent and Microsoft's Xbox Live service, but there are two things you should take from this patent:<br />
<ol>
    <li><em>It does not mean Microsoft copied Nintendo.</em> While Nintendo filed this patent before the Xbox was even launched, chances are Microsoft also filed a patent just as long ago, if not longer.<br /></li>
    <li><em>It does not guarantee these services will be included in the Wii.</em> While Nintendo now has patent protection on such services, given the company the option to incorporate all these features into Wii Connect24, that does not guarantee Nintendo's willingness to implement every aspect of the patent into its service, although it is likely we will see a very similar (if not exact) system implemented by the time the Wii launches.</li>
</ol>
Nintendo, we can now confirm, has the ability to launch a fully-fledged online service on par with Microsoft, providing almost the exact same features (fully-fledged messaging, downloadable content). To what extent will Nintendo beef up the Wii's online component?<br /><br />[Thanks, Ianc02]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/08/nintendo-granted-messaging-patent-wii-im/">Nintendo granted messaging patent -- Wii IM?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jun 2006 14:55:00 EST. Iwata stated that the DS would be able to act as a touchscreen controller for the console, which we assume would work when navigating the unit's menus outside of playing games, although one game is making it possible for the DS to control gameplay so far. <br /><br />The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/08/you-knew-it-pokemon-coming-to-wii/">recent announcement</a> of <em>Pokemon Battle Revolution</em> promises that the player will be able to use the Wi-Fi capabilities of the DS to perform a number of actions. Being the first game to implement features with the DS, we're hopeful that many more developers will take advantage of this properly.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/08/ds-and-wii-so-happy-together/">DS and Wii: so happy together</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jun 2006 09:42:00 EST. Unless Nintendo's going for a cataclysmic surprise launch strategy (see: Sega Saturn), a release period of late October to early November seems to be a fair guess.<br /><br />And that's all it is -- a fair guess. The Game Critics Awards, an independent group of journalists from 37 different media outlets, have deemed Nintendo's Wii <em>Best of Show</em>, praising its unique controller and "different" approach to gaming. <br /><br />Nintendo also grabbed the <em>Best Hardware</em> and <em>Best Sports Game</em> gongs, the latter one being awarded for the very energetic <em>Wii Sports</em> collection. Other big winners were Will Wright's <em>Spore</em>, Microsoft's <em>Gears of War</em>, Ubisoft's <em>Assassin's Creed. </em>The shockingly innovative PS3 controller was mysteriously overlooked.<br /><br />With the Wii receiving this sort of vindication, both as a concept and as a console, we hope that critics and gamers alike don't forget that, like any other system, the games are what will make or break it. The Wii was a success at E3 due to games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/10/wii-impressions-super-mario-galaxy/"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a>. Games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/10/wii-impressions-final-furlong/"><em>Final Furlong</em></a>, on the other hand, remind us that the hardware alone, weird controller and all, can't guarantee an enjoyable experience.<br /><br />[Thanks AssemblyLineHuman!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/01/e3-game-critics-wii-won/">E3 game critics: Wii won</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Jun 2006 17:30:00 EST. As the image suggests, it may be a long while before Wii becomes a common name -- the mainstream public has not yet been completely exposed to the Wii.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/29/wii-bashing-is-over-claims-nintendo-uk-boss/">"Wii-bashing is over" claims Nintendo UK boss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 May 2006 19:25:00 EST.
