After doing work-for-hire projects with their new company in the mid '90s, they finally released a passion project, called Carmageddon, which featured goofy and gory, over-the-top vehicular carnage, and still claims a place in the heart of older PC gamers everywhere. In order to get published, they sold rights for the title to SCI, which co-published the game with Interplay.

The title was followed up with a sequel in 1998 (it was called Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now, back when games could be called things like that), but when the sequel didn't do as well, the worst happened: Buckland and Barnden lost their own creation. They've spent years since then trying to get the rights back.

Gallery: Carmageddon Reincarnation (PC)

Continue reading Carmageddon earns Reincarnation as a Kickstarter project

Carmageddon earns Reincarnation as a Kickstarter project originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 May 2012 11:00:00 EST.

We get so jealous of the professional oval-navigators in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing -- their rides get all the sweet paint jobs. What, you think our Toyota Matrix wouldn't look sweet decked out in Home Depot stickers, with a large, arbitrary number plastered on our driver's side door? That's automotive bigotry.

Speaking of, GameStop-sponsored NASCAR racer Joey Logano's latest whip was revealed during yesterday's Sprint Cup practice races: The Big Daddy-branded car seen above. That's actually a pretty great strategy -- can you imagine being one of the other drivers on the track, and seeing a massive drillmonster approaching from behind?
Nothing says 'BioShock' like stock car racing originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 14 Feb 2010 16:00:00 EST. A Dutch auto insurance company called VrijVerzekerd recently thought outside the box of flatulence simulators and gem-swapping puzzle games to come up with a truly brilliant iPhone offering. Titled Endless Racing Game (clever!), the application allows two or more users to sync their iPhones up via Bluetooth, then watch as a car drives between their mobile devices as they generate a continuous racing course.

If that explanation made little to no sense to you, check out the video demo after the jump. It's such a neat concept -- unfortunately, we don't think the iPhone has the install base needed to support that kind of multiplayer experience. Seriously, nobody has those things.
Continue reading Endless Racing Game demo is on the right track

Endless Racing Game demo is on the right track originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 22:00:00 EST. Yet another enormous corporation is dipping its toes into the advertising-friendly waters of PlayStation Home -- later this year, Audi is releasing a Home space with a whole slew of new features beyond "televisions that show commercials all day long." Well, they have those too (of course), but the space will also grant access to an Audi-driving minigame. Those who perform well in said game can unlock apartments in a massive housing complex in the middle of Audi square. We assume if you lose your ranking, you get evicted. Such is life in the high-stakes, no-mercy Home racing circuit.

Audi opening sleek Home space, apartments originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 10:15:00 EST. This video dropped earlier this month, so we offer our humblest apologies if you've already seen it -- actually, scratch that. You could do with seeing it again. Watching a single man go all Ong-Bak on an unsuspecting sedan is damn near the most inspirational thing we've ever seen. Oh, and it closely resembles the bonus stage from Street Fighter II, which is why its relevant for our gaming-centric news establishment. Oh, and it features a song by Rage Against The Machine, which we understand is quite the popular band with the kids nowadays.

The reverse vehicular manslaughter demonstration is posted after the jump.
Continue reading Iron-fisted man recreates Street Fighter bonus stage

Iron-fisted man recreates Street Fighter bonus stage originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 13:15:00 EST. The car is equipped with a camera that feeds video back to the PSP. One possible application: "a user may control the car... so as to spy on their friends... then upload the stored video images to a website."

In addition, the patent application states that the car could be used for an "augmented reality" racing game in which the game recognizes real objects as elements in the racing game. Basically, you build your own track from stuff around the house.

The only thing we can't figure out about this patent is why it's not a real product yet. Why is nobody selling us this right now? If Sony really wants the PSP to succeed, here's how to do it. A pink PSP and a Hannah Montana game aren't going to be any significant competition for the DS. But a remote-controlled spy car is, because that is awesome.
Sony patents tiny PSP-controlled spy car originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 12:40:00 EST.

Portable screens for home consoles, we will never understand you. Playing Wii Sports in the car? Did nobody learn anything about the serious dangers of bowling in confined spaces from the Japanese Wii safety manual? And all on a tinier screen than you'd ever use at home?

Clearly, not everybody is so indifferent. This clip-on LCD 16:9 panel from Thinkgeek isn't the first of its kind, and we're willing to bet it won't be the last. It's an eye-straining seven inches from corner to corner, but at $109.99 is the cheapest option we've seen to date for those who can't bear to leave their console behind when they step outdoors. $109.99? Hey, what else can you buy for almost that amount? Oh, yes. More shots past the break.

With the Wii being the hottest item on the planet, this is sure to bring some folks in, with the hopes that they'll hit some homers and knock the price of their car down.

Of course, to take advantage of this offer, you first need to desire to drive around in a Nissan or Hyundai, since that's what kind of dealerships these are. In fact, one of us even went so far as to enjoy playing Puzzle Quest at red lights while behind the wheel. It's a dangerous obsession that not only threatens our own lives, but those of everyone else in the world. It's the nature of the beast, we suppose.

So imagine our surprise when we read this little piece and totally realized we could output our DS's sound to our car speakers, almost providing a surround sound experience. Sure, we have headphones for when we're trying to get our dual-screen on out in the wild, but sometimes they're uncomfortable. This just seems like an incredibly obvious thing we never thought of ourselves. We can totally picture playing Ouendan or Elite Beat Agents in this manner.
Rock your DS's sound through the car stereo originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 12:45:00 EST. You select games by flashing your lights at the screen, and control gameplay by messing around with stuff on your dashboard. The system broadcasts the games' sound to your car stereo.

What a novel design! Finally, someone has conquered the problem of how to play video games inside a car. The next step will be to create a mobile version of this device, with a tiny car dashboard, or some kind of simplified representation of the controls on a dashboard, that allows you to interact with the system while outside of the car.

[Via MAKE: Blog]
Play Tetris ... in your car originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 16:40:00 EST. It's time to get away from the body in our special week-long presentation of Show and Tell, and get into something fun. Being a dedicated Zelda fan isn't just about clothes and tattoos -- it's about what you do with the rest of your existence. This means toys, electronics, and even art can hold up your love as a banner for the world to see, and that's what we're looking at in today's edition. Jaunt on past the break to see what what we mean.

Do you have some awesome Zelda gear? Anything from t-shirts to tattoos, to statues and standees, if it features Link, we want to help you show it off. Snap some pics and send 'em to showmeit [at] dsfanboy [dot] com. If we don't get to your stuff this week, we can always show you off in a later edition!
Continue reading Show and Tell: Zelda week, day four

Show and Tell: Zelda week, day four originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Oct 2007 15:50:00 EST. Some of us (including me) have experienced the dreaded red lights and have had to deal with Microsoft's semi-helpful customer service to send off a broken 360. CoolNumber9 is having the same red ring of death problems and has been using the "towel trick" to keep it running long enough to make a ring of death inspired Forza 2 car. The coveted buzzword adds a Hemi-like boost to Project Gotham Racing 4's newly announced gameplay element: a weather system -- a dynamic weather system. Wipe out as you power around a corner into a rare Shanghai snow storm, or get pounded by a sudden downpour on your last lap through St. Petersburg. Expect the unexpected. That's next-gen, er, dynamic.

Of course, the stakes are higher while competing in the new career mode. As you act a fool, earning Kudos and dedicated fans along the way, you'll have to balance an addiction to flair with the unsettling fear that a freak weather occurrence could cut short your days of thunder-less glory. That or the "new" AI (the "dynamic" adjective was already taken) will just own your ass -- in style. We weren't specifically trying to win this car, which was the actual grand prize, but we would have happily taken it.

... and put it on eBay, which is what the actual winner of the Thanxgiveaway Wiikend has done. Now, we love the Wii, and we love to let everyone around us know it, but having a car with the logo of a popular electronic device painted on the side in giant letters is like extending an invitation to any rogue or highwayman to come on in and help themselves to our Devo CD's.

At least, that was the reasoning we came up with when we were daydreaming about how awesome it would be to win that contest. This morning, tipster David Phillips pointed us to this interesting Craigslist listing offering a PS3 and two games for "a car or parts and labor on my jeep." A quick search finds a couple of other listings offering up a PS3 in exchange for a new ride or money to fix an existing ride. There are also some postings going the other way, offering a 1987 Volkswagon Golf, a 1991 Mazda Protege and even a 1968 Ford Falcon in exchange for a PS3 or other electronics.

Apparently entertainment is more important than mobility for some traders, which got us wondering what else people would be willing to give up for Sony's super-system. Food? Shelter? Warmth? First born? Not that we're raggin' on Excite Truck, but this latest Wiimote mod is pretty nifty. This Austrian fellow took a cue from some of the Bluetooth documentation at WiiLi.org and springboarded from that to turning an RC car into a WC car -- Wiimote controlled, that is. It's all in the video after the jump.

Some people are already crying fake, but from what the guy says, he's been working on it for a little while and the principles seem sound. Either way, we're starting to think the Wii itself is just icing ... thanks to the mod community, these days it's all about the Wiimote!
Continue reading Taking the Wiimote for a ride outside

Taking the Wiimote for a ride outside originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Dec 2006 14:30:00 EST. Nintendo wants to bring a sort of Virtual Console to your trunk, a game server that can download new content and games that can be enjoyed from any passenger seat in the vehicle.

In filing for the patent, Nintendo refers to the systems already in place in hotels (and elsewhere), LodgeNet, the systems with the cheap, clunky controllers. Here's hoping Nintendo slims those down a bit for this idea, but there's nothing like playing a few rounds of your favorite old school games when on the go. And it's not like we can't do this already; after all, it's not that complicated to install a game system in a vehicle, or there's always the trusty DS. But Nintendo wants to make it easy. Why worry about collecting games and passing them around? Just get in, buckle up, and pick up your controller.

The documents also make specific mention that the 'car area network' can pipe into the vehicle's stereo system, just in case you have the urge to bump the Zelda theme at stoplights. Macsimum News (an Apple news site) covers the patent Nintendo filed in August to bring an in-car gaming system via installed hardware and a "Car Area Network" that can supposedly beam game information from the server to the game console. Although they say the wireless network could be between your game server (in the trunk) and the game console (in your backseat), they do mention that the system could possibly download new games and updates wirelessly.

The controller looks a lot like the Virtual Console Controller, which in turn resembles the generic crapware that you find in hotels and on airplanes which play the absolute worst games imaginable. Seriously, if you're stuck on an international flight for something like 21 hours, you'll have more fun playing "count the seat threads" than you will using the in-flight game systems. If you're thinking about pimping out your ride, pick up a cheap GameCube, PS2, or Xbox and stick that in your car rather than waiting on this car game system to hit the market.

Next up: Nintendo in your bathroom (no Wii jokes, please).

[Thanks, metalliska]

[Update: we meant PS2, not PS3. If indeed there were cheap PS3s to be had, we'd be letting you know.
