The wings! The weapons! The character-accurate bike shorts! The reflective tape to create a glowing effect when a camera flashes! (See after the break). Anyway, if we can't post impressive cosplay once in a while, what's the point of coming to PAX?<br /><br />Even though PikminLink is an "official" costumed character present at Nintendo's booth, Nintendo reps told us that she designed and created the costume herself. Nintendo helped her by providing design reference.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/nintendos-kid-icarus-uprising-cosplayer-is-pit-and-not-the-pi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo's Kid Icarus: Uprising cosplayer is Pit (and not the pits)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/nintendos-kid-icarus-uprising-cosplayer-is-pit-and-not-the-pi/">Nintendo's Kid Icarus: Uprising cosplayer is Pit (and not the pits)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Apr 2012 01:15:00 EST. It's almost Halloween, and it's likely you're pretty much set on what you're dressing up as this year. If you're thinking <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samus">Samus</a>, think again: Dan Cattell's sprite-based Samus and Chozo Statue costumes are without equal. In fact, they're even featured in the latest issue of <em>Nintendo Power</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/this-retro-metroid-cosplay-is-without-equal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>This retro Metroid cosplay is without equal</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/this-retro-metroid-cosplay-is-without-equal/">This retro Metroid cosplay is without equal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Oct 2011 00:00:00 EST. Every year, many of Japan's biggest game and anime fans put incredible time, effort and money into creating detailed costumes of their favorite characters. Then, in September, they don those costumes ... and cram themselves into the most crowded, humid place on Earth, a corridor between two halls of the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/tgs-2011">Tokyo Game Show</a>. Seriously, we were wearing regular non-costume clothes and we were sweating at all times.<br />
<br />
Join us in celebrating talent, commitment, and unhealthy zeal of these brave cosplayers by perusing our gallery of TGS 2011 cosplay. You'll see that, in Japan, people like the <em>Yakuza</em> games enough to dress up like its characters! Kind of amazing!<br />

<br />
After seeing something completely astounding, our first instinct is to rip it apart to see just how its innards work in such graceful harmony with each other. Thankfully, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/10/this-portal-2-wheatley-puppet-is-the-best-thing-youll-see-today/">the amazing Wheatley-puppet</a> creator Jennifer Sorrell is giving us an inside look at her personality sphere with in-progress photos, descriptions of materials and process, and humble assertions (lies) that her Wheatley didn't turn out to be <em>perfect</em>.<br />
<br />
Wheatley was Sorrell's first foray into puppetry, but we're guessing it's not her last. Check out the complete behind-the-scenes build on her <a href="http://furincosplay.blogspot.com/2011/07/wheatley.html">cosplay blog</a>, and request she make a 1-1-scale puppet of GLaDOS next. The office has been looking pretty bare recently.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/14/its-whats-inside-that-counts-wheatley-puppet-edition/">It's what's inside that counts: Wheatley puppet edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST. Even dogs took part in the cosplay activities at this year's Otakon convention, with Dante the dog here dressing in the divine garb of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/okami"><em>Okami's</em></a> heroine, the goddess Amaterasu.<br />
<br />
If you have a white dog you'd like to style as Amaterasu (and who is a <em>good boy </em>like Dante -- good boy!) his owners detailed the process of making the costume on their <a href="http://practicalevil.com/2011/08/amaterasu-build/">blog</a>. Happily, the whole thing was conceived from the perspective of what would be best for Dante; even the decision to bring him to Otakon in the first place was explained as "this was better for him than leaving him in a boarding place for five days." The whole post is full of tips and disclaimers about ensuring your dog's happiness and comfort while also making it look like a video game character.<br />
<br />
Basically, our hearts were warmed twice by this story. And then a third time when our eyes drifted back up to the picture.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/10/good-morning-heres-a-dog-dressed-as-amaterasu/">Good morning, here's a dog dressed as Amaterasu</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 09:30:00 EST. The importance of nerdom in public society has increased exponentially in the past decade, with the video game industry now producing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/esa-2011-essential-facts-note-rise-in-women-adult-gamers/">over $25 billion</a> in annual revenue alone. Ask any random group of cosplayers at San Diego Comic-Con what the above completely customized, electronic <em>Halo </em>MJOLNIR Assault Armor suit is worth, and they'd probably guess in the thousands. According to the experts at History Channel's <a href="http://www.history.com/shows/pawn-stars/videos/playlists/full-episodes#pawn-stars-off-the-wall"><em>Pawn Stars</em></a>, they'd be wrong.<br />
<br />
This <em>Halo </em>fan is hoping to score a humble $2,000 for his spectacular suit, but the Pawn Stars won't go a cent over $200, crushing his dreams and possibly losing him a girlfriend. We salute you, <em>Halo </em>Hero, for testing the waters in popular society for nerds everywhere. We'll be sure to keep our fetishes in convention halls and caves -- for now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/29/selling-custom-halo-armor-to-the-pawn-stars-is-out-of-this-guys/">Selling custom Halo armor to the Pawn Stars is out of this guy's Reach</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 16:30:00 EST. Already lining up your established video game intellectual property-themed wardrobe for the upcoming festivities at PAX East 2011? You might want to throw a costume based on one of Twisted Pixels' creations into the mix, as the developer <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/twisted_pixel/status/25299006510866432">announced over Twitter</a> that one lucky <em>'Splosion Man</em>, <em>The Maw</em>, <em>Comic Jumper</em> or <em>Ms. 'Splosion Man</em> cosplayer who comes to the studio's booth on the show floor will have a character <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/twisted_pixel/status/25299290163253249">modeled after them</a> appear in an upcoming title of its choosing.<br />
<br />
"This will be a 'walk on role' for lack of a better term, as a character somewhere in the game. Background of this character will depend on where we feel they can fit in the story," a Twisted Pixel rep explained to Joystiq in more detail. "The winner will be updated on the status of their character and what game it will be when we get close to announcing the title."<br />
<br />
Everyone who stops by the booth in-costume will end up on Twisted Pixel's official website, while three runners-up will get their names in the credits of the unspecified game -- everyone, of course, has a chance to play those <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/12/ms-splosion-man-and-unannounced-twisted-pixel-title-playable-a/">unreleased games</a>.The studio <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/twisted_pixel/status/25300282543968256">also promises</a> a very special prize for folks who show up as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/12/twisted-pixel-ceo-we-wont-pursue-legal-action-over-maxplosion/">increasingly infamous MaXplosion</a> -- "a kick to the face." After five long years of careful manicuring, your hair is <em>finally,</em> perfectly coifed -- just like <em>Resident Evil 4's</em> Leon S. Kennedy. You've got that devil-may-care attitude down, ammo clips holstered around each thigh, and you're <em>all about</em> saving the president's daughter. The only thing left? <em>Fingerless gloves</em>. Oh, and also Leon's not-so-cheap, replica bomber jacket, now available to pre-order directly from Capcom's Japan-only online store -- though you'll have to go through a proxy service if you live outside Japan. (Game Swag has <a href="http://gameswag.com/help/buying-selling/#services">listed</a> some of them.)<br />
<br />
The e-Capcom store has dated the first shipments of the jacket for "early January," so you may want to start saving up the &yen;26,040 (about $315, plus the proxy fee), um, like, probably a few months ago. Or maybe just scour your neighborhood for treasure chests? That's what Leon would do.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/27/complete-your-leon-kennedy-cosplay-with-his-bomber-jacket/">Complete your Leon Kennedy cosplay with his bomber jacket</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Dec 2010 17:05:00 EST. So he and his dad set out to build a replica of Samus's <em>Metroid Prime</em>-era Varia Suit, starting with the arm cannon. The final cannon has a speaker and LED lights controlled by an <a href="http://www.arduino.cc/">Arduino</a> microcontroller, so it can be made to fire simulated Power Beam, Plasma Beam and charged shots. Joseph even has to correctly "log in" to use it!<br />
<br />
The rest of the costume is still incomplete, but at this point Joseph has a perfectly acceptable backup costume: "Guy With This Awesome Arm Cannon."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/22/father-and-son-create-elaborate-samus-arm-cannon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Father and son create elaborate Samus arm cannon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/22/father-and-son-create-elaborate-samus-arm-cannon/">Father and son create elaborate Samus arm cannon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 11:00:00 EST. There's something uniquely TGS-like about being stuck in a game demo line between two <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatsune_Miku">Hatsune Mikus</a>. We took our lives into our hands (leaving room for a camera, of course) and ventured into a raging sea of people to bring you pictures of those few folks dedicated enough to make and wear elaborate outfits in unseasonable heat.<br />
<br />
As for our favorite cosplayer of the show: we're definitely fond of the guy in <em>Dragon Quest IX</em> "Gooey Gear" Slime armor, but <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUVdA9ABzpg">Airman can't be beaten</a>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tgs-cosplay-2010/">TGS cosplay 2010</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tgs-cosplay-2010/#3376753"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/tgscosplay91701_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tgs-cosplay-2010/#3376754"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/tgscosplay91702-1284783130_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tgs-cosplay-2010/#3376755"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/tgscosplay91703-1284783133_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tgs-cosplay-2010/#3376756"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/tgscosplay91704-1284783136_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tgs-cosplay-2010/#3376757"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/tgscosplay91705_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/21/tgs-2010-cosplay-goes-to-a-new-chapter/">TGS 2010: Cosplay goes to a new chapter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 16:05:00 EST. The very same mall we walked through to enter the inaugural <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2010">PAX East</a> this past March just saw a heavy influx of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lemmings"><em>Lemmings</em></a>, care of <a href="http://www.zug.com/live/85751/Real-Life-Lemmings.html">the folks at ZUG</a> and "a few dozen" of their "closest friends." And then ship yourself to Japan in it. Konami is holding a <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> cosplay contest next month, with the winner to be determined at the Tokyo Game Show.<br />
<br />
Interested Johnny Sasaki lookalikes (and other Metal Gear cosplayers) can submit pictures <a href="https://www.konami.co.jp/gs/mg_cosplay/">here</a> (warning: Japanese-language application!) Konami will select a few of the entries to appear at the publisher's TGS booth on September 18. There, they will be evaluated by a panel of guest judges to be announced later -- as well as the TGS attendees in general, who <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/26/tgs-2009-heres-our-obligatory-cosplay-gallery/">know a thing or two about dressing up</a>.<br />
<br />
The most difficult thing about <em>Metal Gear</em> cosplay is that if you're too accurate, you'll be too stealthy for the judges to notice.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/cosplayers-will-compete-at-tokyo-game-shows-metal-gear-cosplay/">Cosplayers will compete at Tokyo Game Show's 'Metal Gear Cosplay Camp'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 07:00:00 EST. Given the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/gamescom-2010-grows-to-254-000-attendees/">hundreds of thousands of people who turned out for Gamescom 2010</a>, the number of cosplayers in attendance was surprisingly small. Or maybe it wasn't surprising, given that this year's show didn't even encourage the costumed patrons with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/cosplay-record-attempt-fails-at-gamescom-guinness-believes-a-tg/">a feeble world record attempt</a> or anything.<br />

The <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/halo"><em>Halo</em></a> assault rifle has had a difficult time earning respect. It was totally outshined by the pistol in <em>Halo: CE</em>, ditched entirely for <em>Halo 2</em> and brought back again in <em>Halo 3</em> -- only to lose the spotlight to the battle rifle. Now, thanks to a creative <em>Halo </em>fan, the assault rifle has been <a href="http://405th.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=26372">brought to life</a> ... and completely <em>nerfed</em>. (Like, it's actually a Nerf gun -- get it?)<br />
<br />
Taking a stock Nerf rifle and an "infamous knock off dollar store assault rifle," a modder known as Moz cobbled together this <em>Halo </em>assault rifle, adding custom pieces and paint. The best part: It actually works; albeit with a <em>slightly</em> lower rate of fire than an actual assault rifle. See it in action after the break.<br />

Square Enix, apparently, is <em>all about</em> the cosplay. Just today, the publisher <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/pressreleases/55854/FINAL_FANTASY_XIII_OFFICIAL_UK_LAUNCH_EVENT_AT_HMV.php">announced</a> that it'll be rewarding the first 50 people dressed in "<em>Final Fantasy</em> costumes" who arrive at the March 9 launch event for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiii">Final Fantasy XIII</a></em> with a free copy of the game's soundtrack. Oh, and also, Square Enix producer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/yoshinori-kitase">Yoshinori Kitase</a> and art director Isamu Kamikokuryo will be there, signing <em>whatever you want</em>. <br />
<br />
The release further entices attendees with "high-profile DJ and TV presenter Alex Zane," who'll no doubt be spitting hot fire into a mic all evening. The event kicks off at 5:30PM at the Oxford Street HMV in London and runs until the sun comes up -- or 7:30PM, whichever comes first.<br />

While we're certain you <em>well-adjusted lotharios</em> spent your Valentine's Day basking in the adoration of your significant other, 99 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> fans spent the day breaking the most unapologetically dorky world record known to mankind: The most costumed Star Trek fans <a href="http://timesonline.typepad.com/technology/2010/02/star-trek-world-record-comes-to-london.html">ever gathered in a single place</a>. We imagine they also broke the "most depressing way to spend a Valentine's Day" record as well, but we don't have any way of empirically proving that.<br />
<br />
No, you know what? We take back that mean thing we just said. 99 people chose to dress up like their favorite Star Trek character, suffered crummy weather to gather on London's Millennium Bridge, and celebrated this thing that they love. Hell, if we'd known Atari representatives were going to be there to distribute free <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/15/star-trek-online-lifetime-12-month-subscription-deals/">lifetime subscriptions</a> to the game, we would've happily helped to bring the grand total of participants into the triple digits.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/star-trek-online-fans-set-nerdiest-world-record-ever/">Star Trek Online fans set nerdiest world record ever</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Feb 2010 18:30:00 EST. YouTube user <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ProfessorGigaton">ProfessorGigaton</a> has a pair of videos showing off his latest diabolical creation: a life-size model of <em>Fallout 3</em>'s Railway Rifle. If you're inclined to take on the project yourself, one of the videos features a full <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLZsd7WYVHg">tutorial</a> to help you create your very own non-working replica. Lazy, like us? The <em>supposed</em> professor -- we're waiting on his school transcripts -- is also selling the model featured in the videos on <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;item=330389058873&amp;ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT">eBay</a>. The starting bid is $45, and it's sure to look great with your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Fallout-3/"><em>Fallout 3</em></a>-inspired cosplay ... and will definitely come in handy in the post-apocalyptic world of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012">2012</a>.<br />

We may raise our snobby noses as we pass by cosplayers at conventions, but once a year it becomes socially acceptable for us to embrace our inner theater student and don a disguise. Being people who spend quite a bit of time writing about or playing video games, we tend to err on the side of nerdery when it comes to Halloween outfits (<em>shocking</em>, we know). The folks at <a href="http://fangamer.net/products/awesomeness">Fangamer</a> coax this urge all the more when they release a full outfit of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/earthbound"><em>Earthbound</em></a>'s hero, Ness, on their site. Considering the striped "Shirtness," the accompanying "Earth Bounder" (the yo-yo) and the guarantee that it'll arrive before Halloween, the $54.99 asking price seems almost acceptable. <em>Almost</em>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5390173/earthbound-inspired-shirtness-hatness-ups-your-nerdness">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/27/youre-bound-to-look-sharp-in-these-earthbound-duds/">You're bound to look sharp in these Earthbound duds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 13:45:00 EST. This is a just a warning to any zombies considering joining the New York City Halloween parade. Pictured above are some of the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/plants-vs-zombies">plants</a> that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/popcap">PopCap</a> will be <a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2886365&amp;id=57571168213">sending to march in said parade</a>. As you -- the zombies -- well know, these plants will most certainly assure your demise. Well, except the wall-nuts. They'll pretty much just stand there and let you eat them, but we love 'em anyway. Okay, sure, he may have looked ridiculous dressed up as Eddie Riggs at last night's MTV video Music Awards, what with that awful wig and foam arms that would have been laughed off the set of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umFzekMru2k"><em>Popeye</em></a>. And yeah, we know he's got a stake in the project's success, but you have to love Jack Black's commitment to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brutal-legend"><em>Br&uuml;tal Legend</em></a>, one that we wish all big-name celebrities could share when they appear in games of their own. <br /> <br /> Seriously though, Jack, let's have a talk about that wig.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/14/jack-black-cosplays-as-eddie-riggs-at-vmas/">Jack Black cosplays as Eddie Riggs at VMAs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Sep 2009 08:30:00 EST. We've been too busy slapping on facemasks and hazmat suits to quell the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/psa-swine-flu-cases-confirmed-at-pax/">nerd flu outbreaks</a>. There weren't nearly as many people dressed up as last year, but we're hoping that Tycho and Gabe add a full-on costume contest to the mix next year for PAX East or West. <br /><br />Did you see that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/how-to-build-a-big-daddy-costume-in-many-complicated-steps/">Big Daddy</a> costume we posted about? Well, that guy wasn't at PAX ... but we wish he would have been. Still, there were some impressive efforts up in Seattle this year, and you can take a gander at them in the gallery below. And yes, we've included a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2009-the-costumes/2270025/full/">photo</a> of War's horse Ruin from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Darksiders">Darksiders</a></em>, because he was a mechanical bull who just <em>happened</em> to be wearing a giant, killer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/pax-2009-red-dead-redemption-lets-you-kill-everything/">horse skin</a>. Cheater. <br /><br />Anyhow, knock yourself out in the gallery below. After all, we braved a freakin' <em>virus</em> to get these pictures for you.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2009-the-costumes/">PAX 2009: The Costumes</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2009-the-costumes/#2270070"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/paxcos0914_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2009-the-costumes/#2270069"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/paxcos0929_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2009-the-costumes/#2270068"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/paxcos0919_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2009-the-costumes/#2270067"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/paxcos0918_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2009-the-costumes/#2270066"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/paxcos095_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/pax-2009-cosplaying-in-seattle/">PAX 2009: Cosplaying in Seattle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 01:45:00 EST. Yeah, okay, we are too. This <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/bioshock"><em>BioShock</em></a> Big Daddy costume built by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/how-to-make-a-portal-gun-replica-hint-its-not-easy/">master</a> game prop fabricator <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/joystiq-interview-harrison-krix-video-game-replica-designer/">Harrison Krix</a> is <em>just that great</em>.<br />
<br />
Krix thoughtfully provided <a href="http://volpinprops.blogspot.com/2009/09/big-daddy-bioshock.html">step-by-step instructions</a> so you can attempt to fabricate your own Big Daddy. It's mostly made from an insulation-foam and cardboard skeleton, covered with expanding foam, with one of those domes from a ceiling-mounted security camera for the head and custom-molded resin details. And then there's ... the articulated cardboard-and-PVC animatronic hand.<br />
<br />
Okay, maybe the fact that he's shown how <em>he</em> did this doesn't necessarily mean <em>we</em> can do it.<br />

If we had a "sad panda" costume, we'd put it on right now for this post. The <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2009">GamesCom</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/22/cosplayer-gathering-at-gamescom-attempts-to-break-guinness-recor/">attempt</a> to break the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/18/cosplayers-gathering-breaks-guinness-record-where-none-existed/">Guinness world record</a> for "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters" failed this weekend -- but it wasn't an "epic fail." Joystiq spoke with Gaz Deaves, Guinness' video games records manager, who told us 311 <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/cosplay">cosplayers</a> were present, which was 65 short of the record set at London MCM Expo on May 23 of this year.<br /> <br /> Deaves explained that once the line was cleared, organizers didn't think it would be fair to keep the folks waiting while they went looking for more people on the show floor -- a good thing, considering the heat already caused our pity meter to go into overdrive for the folks hotboxing inside the Tetris blocks and full Yoshi costumes. The organizer's eleventh-hour change of venue from the South Hall entrance to a random location between two halls in the enormous complex probably didn't help costumed revelers attend the event either.<br /> <br /> The next attempt to break the record will likely be London Games Festival or MCM Expo, which have applied the last two years, successfully breaking the record on both occasions. Deaves tells us, "However, the big competitor who has yet to apply is TGS. I expect Tokyo could smash this record; however, until they've been officially counted they can't claim it."<br />

Over 400 cosplayers are expected to gather and break the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/18/cosplayers-gathering-breaks-guinness-record-where-none-existed/">Guinness record</a> for "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters" today at <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2009">GamesCom</a>. We were looking forward to telling you if they broke the <a href="http://www.londonexpo.com/">MCM London</a> record of 376 characters ... but we forgot one little detail: Um, all those people need to be officially counted and that seems to take a <em>really long time</em>.<br /><br />With a couple Guinness representatives on hand, each cosplayer has to write down the name of their character and respective game. Following that, a photo gets taken and then they get to bake in the summer sun -- waiting for everyone else to be counted. We felt really bad for the Tetris pieces! <strike>We'll update when we get the official count.</strike><br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/cosplay-record-attempt-fails-at-gamescom-guinness-believes-a-tg/">It failed</a>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/">GamesCom cosplay (Guinness attempt)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227832"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0557_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227831"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0554_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227830"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0549_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227829"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0562_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227828"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0561_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/22/cosplayer-gathering-at-gamescom-attempts-to-break-guinness-recor/">Cosplayer gathering at GamesCom attempts to break Guinness record</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 22 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. During Preview Night at Comic-Con, we spotted two of the best video game costumes so far: <em>Half-Life's</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/comic-con-2009-costumes/2161438/full/">Gordon Freeman</a>, complete with Gravity Gun, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/comic-con-2009-costumes/2161437/full">Ezio from <em>Assassin's Creed</em> <em>2</em></a>. For a minute we thought we'd miraculously spotted former Joystiq blogger (and amateur Gordon Freeman lookalike) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/ross-bio-photo.jpg">Ross Miller</a>, and were set to pounce on him, but thankfully we noticed at the last minute and averted disaster. Click Gordon for a larger version, which includes his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/sdccgordonbadge.jpg?=5768">employee ID</a>, and head beyond the break for Ezio.<br /><br /> There's more cosplay going on here than at a LARP convention, and we'll be bringing you a lot more. Click through for Ezio and his blades, and stay tuned.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/comic-con-2009-costumes/">Comic-Con 2009: Costumes</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/comic-con-2009-costumes/#2161479"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/sdccgordonbadge_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/comic-con-2009-costumes/#2161438"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/sdccgordonfreeman1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/comic-con-2009-costumes/#2161437"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/sdccezio_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/comic-con-2009-gordon-freeman-and-ezio-cosplay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comic-Con 2009: Gordon Freeman and Ezio cosplay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/comic-con-2009-gordon-freeman-and-ezio-cosplay/">Comic-Con 2009: Gordon Freeman and Ezio cosplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Jul 2009 01:00:00 EST. Flickr user <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/29796748@N06/sets/72157619134116749/">deficientatlife</a> has some great shots of a cosplaying duo, featuring the Big Daddy and Little Sister from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bioshock">Bioshock</a> </em>you see above. The photostream even includes some step-by-step photos of how it all came together. Turns out, work is involved. We thought they just cut off your hand, put a big drill on it, and sent you on your way. OK, we're sure this has been floating around the tubes for a bit, but we're more than happy to devote some attention to the very cool Brotherhood of Steel costume you see above. Made out of awesome and love (probably some foam and paint in there too), the beautiful homage to <em>Fallout 3</em> was apparently completed back in March.<br /><br />After seeing this, we don't feel so bad about losing that auction for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/fallout-3-brotherhood-of-steel-statue-sold-for-2-507/">7'10" Brotherhood of Steel statue</a>. We'd go to work wearing this costume if we could.<br /><br />[Thanks, Gawk]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/we-want-this-fallout-3-brotherhood-of-steel-costume/">We want this Fallout 3 Brotherhood of Steel costume</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 23:59:00 EST. Turkish website <a href="http://www.nintendocu.com/index.php?subaction=showfull&amp;id=1245886804&amp;archive=&amp;start_from=&amp;ucat=17&amp;">Nintendocu.com</a> has a gallery of fantastic <em>Legend of Zelda</em> cosplay compiled from various photography websites and gaming events. The primary character in action is Princess Zelda herself, with cameo appearances from Link. In one of the images (above) Zelda and Link can be seen locking lips, which we're pretty sure jumps the shark from "dress playing" lore to "blue" fan fiction. It's especially "blue" if you've got a thing for plastic ears.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GoNintendo/">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/those-ears-totally-look-fake-a-collection-of-zelda-cosplay/">Those ears look totally fake: a collection of Zelda cosplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 18:15:00 EST. The word "disturbing" is not often far removed from the word "cosplay." You'll frequently find them situated together in very close proximity, as in: "Look at that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-cosplay/1007338/">grown man dressed as Captain Falcon</a>; that's kind of disturbing." Fairly innocent, right? The connotation we would associate with the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/judithstephens/tags/silenthill/"><em>Silent Hill</em> costumes</a> pictured above is a little more direct, as in: "Those <em>Silent Hill</em> costumes are disturbing." Given the arc of the franchise though, we suppose that's the point.<br /><br />Seen at <a href="http://www.acen.org/">Anime Central 2009</a> (photos by <a href="http://thedreamerworld.com/">Judith Stephens</a>) the costumes are frighteningly accurate recreations of the both Pyramid Head and a nurse from the <em>Silent Hill</em> series (and are based on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/21/joystiq-review-silent-hill-the-movie/">the film</a> versions of those characters by the looks of things). Hit the source link for lots more pictures, and possibly a few nightmares.<br /><br />Those with weaker stomachs would probably be better served by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/today-in-joystiq-march-20-2008/">Pyramid Head snowman</a>, which is <em>almost</em> cute.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2009/05/scarier_than_pyramid_head_sile.php">GameSetWatch</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/19/silent-hill-not-your-mothers-cosplay/">Silent Hill: Not your mother's cosplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 May 2009 00:01:00 EST. Cosplay is a double-edged sword. There's the scary edge, of course, with some less than savvy design work and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-cosplay/1010621/">implementation</a> (if you care to put it so kindly). Then there's the awesome side, the side where we see things like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/how-to-make-a-portal-gun-replica-hint-its-not-easy/">this</a>. Add this blog post to the second category. Frankly, this Samus Aran costume is about as awesome as it gets. We mean that in the true sense of awesome too, as in "to inspire awe." Seriously, if you look at some of <a href="http://www.yukicosplay.com/cosplays/samus/samus.htm">these pictures</a>, you'd think they were screenshots from a new <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/metroid"><em>Metroid</em></a> game.<br /><br />The costume was made by Tha&iacute;s Jussim, a Brazillian cosplayer who goes by the alias Yuki. She's created plenty of costumes -- which can be viewed at her <a href="http://www.yukicosplay.com/">website</a> -- but this one takes the cake. It weighs about 23 pounds and contains 73 LEDs. Add a Nerf blaster into the arm cannon and it would be perfect.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=75379">GoNintendo</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://mdb.classicgaming.gamespy.com/?g=features&amp;p=cosplay">Source</a> - Metroid Database interview with Thais Jussim<br /><a href="http://www.yukicosplay.com/">Source</a> - YukiCosplay.com<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/watch-your-socks-this-samus-cosplay-will-knock-them-off/">Watch your socks, this Samus cosplay will knock them off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 13:30:00 EST. <div align="left">Harrison Krix describes himself as a "dork," but we consider him very, very cool. He's the graphic designer who created the astonishingly accurate ASHPD (Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device) we first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/21/the-amazing-fan-made-portal-gun/">showed you</a> a couple weeks back. Krix built the mock Portal gun for his cosplayer girlfriend -- if that's not devotion, we don't know what is -- and has now revealed the entire process to <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/games/half-life-2-portal/pc/game-features/portal-gun-in-depth/">GameDaily</a>. <br />
<br />
The build is detailed in more than 100 steps, should you, ya know, want to try it yourself. There's even a gallery of a very happy Emily (above) showing off the finished gun. Speaking of which, our pals at Engadget recently posted a hands-on video of this most drool-worthy creation. You can <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/27/video-portal-gun-replica-hands-on/">check it out here</a>.<br />

Rest assured: when we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/wii-fanboy-review-castlevania-judgment/">reviewed</a> Konami's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/fanswag-castlevania-judgment/"><em>Castlevania Judgment</em></a>, we did so completely free of influence from external factors like whip-wielding producers in cowboy hats or vampire hunter cosplayers. Had there been somebody in our office whipping at us and cosplaying at us, we'd <em>like</em> to think the score would have remained firm, but we have yet to be tested in such a way to find out. Mostly we'd have been happy to suddenly have an office!<br /><br />That's right, the time-altering ability of Aeon brought Simon Belmont into the modern age, specifically the day of <em>Castlevania Judgment</em>'s Japanese release. The legendary vampire hunter joined forces with <em>Castlevania</em> series producer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/igarashi-wiiware-castlevania-might-be-the-right-approach/">Koji Igarashi</a> to bother <em>Dengeki</em> staffers, with a truly amusing set of photos as a result. Will it <em>sell Castlevania?</em> No idea.<br /><br />We thought there was no way to make the outfits Takeshi Obata designed for the characters look any more ridiculous, but Konami found a way: putting them on real people.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/koji-igarashi-and-simon-belmont-team-up-to-sell-castlevania-judg/">Koji Igarashi and Simon Belmont team up to sell Castlevania Judgment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 17:19:00 EST. Hopefully, even if you don't, you can at least give the creators their due. We sure like to, because some really dedicated fans can put together wonderful costumes ... costumes so wonderful we have no choice but to appreciate their cosplay!<br /><br />But we see lots of Mario and Link and the usual suspects, so during these special community spotlights, we like to shy away from the typical. In our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/02/show-and-tell-dress-from-the-best/">last look at cosplay</a>, we saw characters from some of the best DS games represented, but this time, we just looked for more unusual selections. If someone suggested the notion of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/twilight-princess">Link and Midna</a> cosplay to you -- wolf Link, that is -- you'd probably think Midna would be the more lifelike one of the pair, yes? Not this time, buddy. No, while this little Midna is great, down to the details and the little legs, it's the wolf who really shines ... especially when you get to the video after the break.<br /><br />But we'll give you a hint: there's a person in there. <em>Wolf Link is made of people</em>.<br /><br />deviantARTist LilleahWest calls this pair of costumes a work in progress, but if it gets much more accurate, we're not sure we can handle it. Also? This wolfsuit was made in only twelve days. That's dedication.<br /><br />

<div align="left">Late last night (and well into this morning), Activision, Blizzard, and GameStop turned a slice of San Francisco's Powell Street into a "Lunar Festival" for the launch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>World of WarCraft: Wrath of the Lich King</em></a>. There were cosplayers; there were dancers; there were face painters; there were ... lots of people eager to get their mitts on the expansion.<br /><br />Several hundred fans turned out, including yours truly. We went, we saw, we ... Liched some King? Okay, so we didn't do that - and no, it doesn't even make any sense - but we did take a whole bunch of photos ensuring that, if you weren't there, it would be sort of like you were. Only without the crazy lady from upstairs threatening to have <em>everyone </em>charged with misdemeanors if the event didn't get quieter.
