Electronic Arts' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/20/ea-purchasing-mobile-publisher-chillingo/">purchase of publisher Chillingo</a> doesn't include the IP rights to <em>Angry Birds</em>. Speaking with <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/10/20/angry-birds-chillingo/">TechCrunch</a>, developer Rovio Mobile's Peter Vesterbacka said that its relationship with Chillingo never went past the iOS versions of the game. Vesterbacka explained, "We will not use Chillingo again." <br />
<br />
It would seem the company's need for a publisher has diminished since striking gold with <em>Angry Birds</em>, which has sold 6.5 million copies on the App Store. Rovio has self-published Android and Nokia versions of <em>Angry Birds, </em>as well as its latest iOS title: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/20/angry-birds-halloween-edition-spooks-ipad-iphone/"><em>Angry Birds Halloween</em></a>. Chillingo's rights to each of its published games would be on a per contract basis, but what EA definitely got for its ducats was the company's <a href="http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Crystal+SDK/news.asp?c=16352">Crystal gaming network</a> platform and all its data gathering potential.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/ea-gets-chillingo-but-not-angry-birds/">EA gets Chillingo, but not Angry Birds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 16:00:00 EST. From the <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=c29kR6nIcSYC&amp;pg=RA1-PA330&amp;lpg=RA1-PA330&amp;dq=%22Grand+Theft+Auto+IV%22+%22crystal+meth%22+bbfc&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=CdXDgxzrOG&amp;sig=wQ2lNZJ_V-qwmfzb4scCPkdu1kA&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=pqo_SuHiIIK0NfvmjbsO&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=2">obscure annals</a> of May 2008 comes the testimony of BBFC head David Cooke, who confirmed that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/16/pegi-becomes-uk-standard-for-ratings-other-organization-gains-p/">now irrelevant</a> UK ratings board had investigated the authenticity of "instructional information about how to make the drug crystal meth" in <em>Grand Theft Auto IV</em>. The incident was brought to light today in a <a href="http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article6550177.ece">Times Online</a> article examining <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pegi">PEGI's</a> recent appointment as the sole UK video games classification authority and allegations that the organization might not be as thorough as the BBFC had been in its review process; for example: testing out <em>GTA IV's</em> so-called meth recipe.<br /><br />We're not certain just how far the BBFC went in its drug trial, but "independent advice" was sought in order to deem that "crucial ingredients and techniques were missing" from the scrutinized game content. What does this mean for the rest of us? Well, one, if you're in the planning stages of a homebrewed meth lab, you should probably look beyond <em>GTA IV's </em>suggestions. And, two, if you've already got your lab up and running, you may want to contact your legal team and tell them that the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/georgia-teen-arsonists-allegedly-learned-from-gta/"><em>GTA</em> made me do it</a>" defense isn't going to work this time. That is, only if the coppers catch you <em>before</em> you blow yourself up.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/06/22/bbfc-says-it-investigated-crystal-meth-recipe-gta-iv">GamePolitics</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/baking-news-gta-iv-meth-recipe-flawed/">Baking news: GTA IV meth recipe flawed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 17:15:00 EST. Yesterday we showed you the <a href="http://www.redriderleglamps.com/"><em>major award</em></a> given to a <em>Smash Bros.</em> tournament winner: a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/16/a-crystal-brawl-for-a-tournament-winner/">Wii covered in Swarovski crystals</a>, which formed the images of Mario and Bowser. It was obviously worth a pile of money, and has value as a collectors' item on top of the value of all the crystals and the work put into it. But did it look <em>good?</em><br /><br />The comments on that post mostly tended toward calling it tacky, but we thought it would be worth <strike>blinging</strike> bringing it up in our daily discussion thread and officially soliciting your opinions. Can <a href="http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802697">adding sparkly stuff</a> to your console be an improvement? Is a crystal-covered system a conversation piece, or a ... behind-the-back conversation piece?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/wii-warm-up-to-bedazzle-or-not-to-bedazzle/">Wii Warm Up: To Bedazzle or not to Bedazzle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST. Daniel Jung probably already has a Wii, since he had enough interest in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl/"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> to attend, and then <em>win</em>, a tournament. But he's about to have another one -- this time, with <em>stuff glued to it.</em> <br /><br />As a prize for his victory in the New York City finals of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/play-brawl-early-and-maybe-win-stuff/">Nintendo's <em>Brawl</em> tournament</a>, Daniel will soon be awarded this crystal-bedazzled Wii, designed by <a href="http://www.crystalicing.com/">CrystalIcing.com</a>. It features Mario against a silver background on one side, and Bowser against a blue background on the other (picture after the break). <br /><br />It was somebody's <em>job </em>to form the shape of Bowser out of Swarovski crystals and glue that shape onto the side of a Wii. That strikes us as pretty surreal -- although our job is to <em>write about</em> the act of gluing a Bowser-shaped constellation of crystals onto a Wii.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/16/a-crystal-brawl-for-a-tournament-winner/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Crystal Brawl for a tournament winner</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/16/a-crystal-brawl-for-a-tournament-winner/">A Crystal Brawl for a tournament winner</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 16 Mar 2008 14:00:00 EST. <br />Our excitement levels for (deep breath) <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ringoffates/">Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates</a></em> are steadily rising -- not only did our ears prick up earlier this year at the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=famitsu&amp;searchsubmit=">Famitsu</a></em> score of 35/40, but this morning we got a release date for PAL territories (spring 2008, the same as the US release) and <em>pretty screens</em> (bizarrely in two different sizes).<br /><br />Most of all however, we're looking forward to wirelessly questing with chums on our handhelds. For many, getting four players together for a co-op game of <em>Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles</em> on the GameCube was an almighty headache, if only because the Cube itself was just <em>so damn sparse</em>. Fortunately, DS ownership is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/22/fun-fact-1-ds-for-every-7-people-in-japan/">somewhat more common</a>, which should make assembling parties of warriors in <em>Ring of Fates</em> -- dubbed "the most accessible <em>Final Fantasy</em> ever" in this morning's press release -- a piece of cake.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/ring-of-fates-hits-pal-regions-next-spring/">Ring of Fates hits PAL regions next spring</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 18:40:00 EST. <br />After weeks of teasing us with screen captures from its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=crystal+bearers"><em>Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers</em></a> trailer, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/squareenix">Square Enix</a> made the 55-second video public early this morning. Though a third of it is taken up by an animated, spinning crystal, the movie still manages to pack in plenty of airship shots, city scenes, and even a tender, tearful moment with the RPG's blonde-haired protagonist. Jump past the post break for the clip and some skydiving action.<br /><br />[Update 1: We mixed up our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ffcc"><em>Ring of Fates</em></a> with our <em>Crystal Bearers</em>, citing this trailer as belonging to <em>The Ring Bearers</em>. Resident blogger Alisha has officially declared today, April 25th, "Super JRPG Screenshot Day," in commemoration of not only <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/2007/04/18/104,1176905243,70441,0,0.html">these great screens</a> but also <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/25/dragon-quest-ix-screenshots-fly-into-view/">these</a>, from an equally desirable title.<br /><br />The vote is pretty much unanimous that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/finalfantasyiii"><em>Final Fantasy III</em></a> is the best-looking DS title to date, but it looks like Square-Enix whipped their programmers into making their games even prettier. Which means those men have whip marks <em>everywhere</em>. The problem with the original <em>Crystal Chronicles</em> was the amazingly intense hardware requirement, but if the new multiplayer cooperative system is easy to use, we might have yet another Squeenix bajillion-seller on our hands.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/25/crystal-chronicles-ring-of-fates-screenshot-love/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates screenshot love</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/25/crystal-chronicles-ring-of-fates-screenshot-love/">Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates screenshot love</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 19:30:00 EST. Maybe it's a modern interpretation of the kind of character art found in the NES <em>Final Fantasy </em>games, but whatever the reason, we definitely appreciate <em>toddling</em> in our world-ending crises.<br /><br />Like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamecube">Gamecube</a> version, you'll have to have friends nearby to play in multiplayer. However, unlike the Gamecube, pretty much <span style="font-style: italic;">everyone</span> has a DS these days. Check out some screens after the break-- you'll want to e-pinch the characters' little virtual cheeks.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/23/final-fantasy-crystal-chronicles-new-fun-size-screens/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: new fun-size screens</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/23/final-fantasy-crystal-chronicles-new-fun-size-screens/">Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: new fun-size screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Mar 2007 15:34:00 EST. There's some shiny text, and then a long, confusing sequence in which one tries to focus on five different scenes in the picture at once. Leave it to SE to try and simply overwhelm your senses ... they're rather good at that.<br /><br />The original <em>Crystal Chronicles</em> was a bit of a let-down, but this title can hopefully bring FF:CC out of the "crappy <em>Final Fantasy</em> spin-offs" category. Oh, and for a slightly higher quality version of the trailer, click <a href="http://www.square-enix.co.jp/ffcc/movie/">here</a> for the official movie from Square-Enix's website.<br /><br />(And did anyone check out what appeared to be a stylus-based fire spell around 1:41? The screens (the top two are from single-player, with the bottom two providing a glimpse into the game's multiplayer) show some in-game sections of the title, but don't really reveal much. Aside from that, any online translation aid we've tried online has spit back indecipherable code. So, we're stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment in trying to gain any further information than the game stars twins.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/18/ff-cc-screens-show-off-single-player-and-multiplayer-screens/">FF: CC screens show off single player and multiplayer screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Dec 2006 11:25:00 EST. If you're allergic to money and have to desperately get rid of as much as you can right now, you might be interested in picking up these crystal PSPs from German mail-order store OTTO. We've been paying attention to the numbers and when we saw <a href="http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2006/09/07/nintendo_ds_sales_2006/">this</a> story where market research firm In-Stat is projecting that the DS will out-ship the PSP by almost 30% this year, we figured that was about right. Number of units shipped does not have as much weight as number of units sold, obviously, but it's another feather we'll gladly place in our cap.<br /><br />Considering the rampant obsession the DS enjoys in Japan, its cost-effective price tag, and large library of incredible games, Sony is in dire straits to find a viable way to present their handheld to consumers in such a way as to generate as much appeal as the DS. They've already cut the price once and even given another cut, we can't see them breaking through the impenetrable force field of popularity the DS has erected over Japan. <em>Game over man, game over!</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/08/ds-expected-to-outship-psp-by-almost-30-percent-this-year/">DS expected to outship PSP by almost 30% percent this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Sep 2006 12:25:00 EST.
