As expected, Electronic Arts and DICE's<em> Battlefield 3</em> got the drop on its competitors and came out victorious atop the UK Charts, becoming the tenth biggest (by units) UK All Formats week one seller ever. <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=1207&amp;s=1111">Chart-Track</a> notes that the game did double the sales of EA's <em>Medal of Honor</em> last year (which DICE also had a hand in), but here's the crazy stat: <em><a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=1207&amp;s=1111">Battlefield 3</a></em>'s first week sales were greater than those of the last 17 <em>Battlefield</em> (retail) game debuts combined since 2002.<br />
<br />
The rest of the top five is a case of making room for <em>Battlefield 3</em>, with <em>Batman: Arkham City </em>justifiably moving down one spot, then <em>FIFA 12</em> doing the same, and so on. Well, except for <em>Just Dance 3</em>, which maintains its spot in fifth, because it's protected by dark dance magic, provided by the power of the babe.<br />
<br />
Premieres this week include Namco Bandai's <em>Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi</em> at 23, also <em>Kinect Sports: Season Two</em> at 18. The original <em>Kinect Sports</em> was "by far the best-selling Kinect game in the UK," according to Chart-Track. <em>Dance Central 2</em> does a little better in its second week, electric sliding from 40 to 34. Check out the UK top ten after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/31/battlefield-3-secures-top-of-uk-charts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Battlefield 3 secures top of UK charts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/31/battlefield-3-secures-top-of-uk-charts/">Battlefield 3 secures top of UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Oct 2011 21:32:00 EST. The grim fates of <em>True Crime</em> and whatever installment of the <em>Guitar Hero</em> series that was in development <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">are known</a> -- but what about Activision's other perennial franchises? A few (equally grim) details surfaced during Activision's investor's call today, during which COO Thomas Tippl explained, "We will release no new music or skateboarding games" during the current calendar year.<br />
<br />
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg added some more insight into the company's shift away from the music genre, explaining that even though <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2">DJ Hero 2</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock">Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock</a></em> were well-received, "demand for peripheral-based music games declined at a dramatic pace." He continued, "Given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs associated with this genre, we simply cannot make these games profitably based on current economics and demand." However, Activision will continue to support its existing music games with DLC.<br />
<br />
We're still left with a lot of questions, though (and we're working on the answers). For instance, what does this mean for the 3DS-bound <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-3d"><em>DJ Hero 3D</em></a><em>?</em> What about the <em>Tony Hawk </em>series at large? Activision's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/activision-still-pushing-shred-believes-tony-hawk-the-man-has/">frequently spoken</a> about its staying power -- and if no <em>Hawk</em> title drops in 2011, it would be the first calendar year in the franchise's history without a new entry <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Hawk_%28series%29#List_of_games_in_the_series">since 1999</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/activision-no-new-music-or-skateboarding-games-this-year/">Activision: 'No new music or skateboarding games' this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 17:27:00 EST. Anxious to check out the sequel to 2006's big screen adaptation of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/21/joystiq-review-silent-hill-the-movie/"><em>Silent Hill</em></a>? Producer Don Carmody -- who is also working on the upcoming Paul W.S. Anderson film, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-afterlife"><em>Resident Evil: Afterlife</em></a> -- told <a href="http://www.fearnet.com/news/interviews/b19050_resident_evil_afterlife_set_visit.html">Fearnet</a> that he's "hoping to start [filming] it in late spring in Toronto." Carmody also reveals in the interview that the first film generated a lot of hate mail. Here's hoping the second go-round invokes a bit less vitriol.<br />
<br />
The sequel will once again feature actress Radha Mitchell, but, as we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/10/gans-not-directing-silent-hill-movie-sequel-actress-radha-mitch/">reported</a> last year, director Christophe Gans does not appear to be returning. Is that a good or bad thing? We'll let you decide.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/producer-hopes-to-start-filming-silent-hill-2-in-late-spring/">Producer hopes to start filming Silent Hill 2 in 'late spring'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 May 2010 16:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/trion">Trion World Network</a> has confirmed the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/trion-asks-president-and-cco-to-try-on-new-career/">rumors</a>: it will reveal its first game at E3 next month. Unfortunately, details of its debut offering, <em>Heroes of Telara</em>, are slim, but the press release for the announced MMORPG contained such carefully spun phrases as "limitless new content" and "unprecedented level of rich and dynamic gameplay." So, your guess is as good as ours.<br /><br />If the name Trion sounds familiar, but you can't think of a single game the company has made, don't feel bad. Trion drama has swept the internet for quite some time. In late 2008, it was revealed the server-based gaming company had raised over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/23/trion-surpasses-100m-in-fundraising-without-releasing-anyth/">$100 million</a> in capital but had yet to release a single title. In late April 2009, Joystiq received a rather inflammatory anonymous tip that Trion president and chief creative officer, Jon Van Canegham, had been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/trion-asks-president-and-cco-to-try-on-new-career/">removed from his position</a> -- but Trion reps maintain the split was a "natural evolution of the growing company."<br /><br />Trion World Network is also collaborating with the Sci-Fi Channel (soon to be SyFy) on an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/sci-fi-channel-creating-an-mmo-tv-show-hybrid/">MMO/TV hybrid project</a> and recently announced plans to work with developer Petroglyph (of <em>Star Wars: Empire at War</em> fame) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/trion-asks-president-and-cco-to-try-on-new-career/">on an unnamed MMORTS</a> title.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/05/06/trion-world-networkl-to-reveal-first-game-at-e3/">BigDownload</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/trion-to-debut-heroes-of-telara-at-e3/">Trion to debut 'Heroes of Telara' at E3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 May 2009 21:30:00 EST. Seriously, she only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/2008s-biggest-blips-jake-hunter-detective-chronicles/">brought it on herself</a>. <div align="left">All the crows you see above are actually players. A bunch of Druids in crow form (as part of the Penny Arcade Alliance on <em>WoW</em>'s Dark Iron server) decided to <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/04/29/shifting-perspectives-druids-just-wanna-have-fun/">recreate "The Birds" in the game</a> You'd think this is pretty awesome (and it is), but really, this is just another story on Joystiq's sister site <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com">WoW Insider</a>. If something cool happens in the game of <em>Warcraft</em> (like, oh I don't know, controlling the game <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/05/06/control-wow-with-your-eyes/"><em>with your eyeballs</em></a>), we're there every day to cover it. During the Prime Minister's questions (which is fantastic television viewing BTW) the MP for Manchester Central asked, "Would the Prime Minister agree with me then that when Sony used images of Manchester Cathedral as part a game which extols gun violence, this was not only in bad taste but also very, very insulting to not simply the Church of England, but people across the land who think it's inappropriate that big corporations behave in this way?"<br /><br />Mr. Blair's response? Quite "meh" in tone and execution. Blair said, "I agree with my honourable friend. I think it's important that any of the companies engaged in promoting these types of goods have some sense of responsibility and also some sensitivity to the feelings of others ... I think it is important that people understand there is a wider social responsibility as well as an interior responsibility for profits." So, that means what exactly?<br /><br />We wish we could get a better idea oh how this kerfuffle is really going down in England. Any Brits want to comment? So far, what we know is that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/sony-vs-church-of-england-meanwhile-cnn-has-field-day/">Sony is handling the situation through their Europe branch quietly</a>. Meanwhile, developer of <em>Resistance</em>, Insomniac Games, is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/12/insomniac-staying-out-of-church-vs-sony-scandal/">keeping their mouth shut</a> and not saying anything either. This whole situation is becoming very <em>Alice in Wonderland</em>. Alice might say, "If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?"<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Changed Blair from PM of England to PM of United Kingdom. Please pardon our oversight citizens of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Eastern Bavaria.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/13/tony-blair-comments-on-church-of-englands-sony-issue/">Tony Blair comments on Church of England's Sony issue</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 18:55:00 EST. Also, if you're familiar with our site, you should have no problem guessing what game it promotes. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Gyakuten/"><em>Gyakuten Saiban 4</em></a>, the latest entry in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phoenix"><em>Phoenix Wright</em></a>/<em>Ace Attorney</em> series, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/26/gyakuten-saiban-4-is-huge/">doesn't really need any more marketing</a>, but we aren't complaining. Later, the solution will appear on the <em>Gyakuten Saiban 4</em> <a href="http://www.capcom.co.jp/saiban4/">website</a>. If any of our Fanboy friends are located in Japan, we hope they'll watch next week and tell us about it!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/capcom-to-japanese-tv-take-that/">Capcom to Japanese TV: "Take that!"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 17:15:00 EST. As suspected, "S" is for "<a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snatcher"><em>Snatcher</em></a>," Kojima's 1988 cyberpunk adventure, which was eventually translated and released for Sega CD in 1994. During this past weekend's '<a target="_blank" href="http://xbox360.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/mizuguchi-working-on-al-gore-environmentalism-project/">Snake vs Zombie Vol. 2</a>' event, Suda confessed that <em>Snatcher</em> was his favorite Kojima effort, prompting a few snickers between the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nomoreheroes"><em>No More Heroes</em></a> creator and Kojima, who joined Suda on stage. While the pair alluded to Project S's presumed connection to <em>Snatcher</em>, it wasn't until this week's article that the link was openly confirmed.<br /><br />Project S is apparently a series of works based on the <em>Snatcher</em> property. The first, a radio drama (yeah, you read that right, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_drama" target="_blank"><em>radio drama</em></a>), will be written by Suda 51, who will also star as one of the voice actors. "I think I will call it '<em>Snatchers</em>.' I can't talk about the details of the story at this point," he told <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/famitsu"><em>Famitsu</em></a>. Any chance it'll make it to satellite?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/suda-51-and-kojimas-project-s-based-on-snatcher-radio-drama-an/">Suda 51 &amp; Kojima's 'Project S' based on Snatcher, radio drama announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 12:28:00 EST. Currently, Metacritic has posted 14
reviews, which average out to a <strong>29/100</strong>. For the record, this is the last time we will ever -
<em>EVER</em> - get our hopes up for a movie adaptation of a video game.<br /><br />Choice quotes:<br />
