The 3DS just got more competition. Not from Sony or another competitor, but from another, now impulse-buy-priced, DS. Nintendo just announced that the DS Lite has been officially dropped in price from $129.99 to $99.99, effective June 5. Perhaps the old SKU at the old price was what GameStop was clearing out?

The same month, six Mario games (New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!, and Mario Party DS) will be re-released in red boxes, to "

make it easy for [consumers] to find their favorite Mario titles." Not that anyone ever had trouble finding any of these -- Nintendo announced that more than 9.25 million copies of New Super Mario Bros. have been sold in the US.

No price drop was announced for the games. Just fancy new boxes.
DS Lite drops to $99 on June 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 May 2011 10:25:00 EST. Tales of counterfeit DS games are nothing new, but 1UP's Jeremy Parish believes he's come across a counterfeit DS Lite. With the news that the handheld will soon disappear from retail shelves, Parish set about procuring an Apple Green unit. Ordering what appeared to be a legitimate system from a reputable eBay seller, Parish received the unit weeks later only to discover several small but significant flaws ranging from misaligned text to a warped GBA slot.

The verdict: this was not a stock Nintendo DS Lite, though it does play DS and GBA games with no problems. While Parish believed it to be a complete counterfeit, some 1UP readers have pointed out that it could simply be a broken DS that someone repaired, outfitted with an aftermarket replacement shell and sold as new. Either way, let the story stand as a warning to anyone looking to procure a DS Lite as its lifespan comes to a close.
Something isn't rite with this DS lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 May 2011 00:00:00 EST. GameStop has confirmed to Joystiq that the mega retailer will no longer stock the Nintendo DS Lite. A company spokesperson informed us that in order to drive sales of the Nintendo 3DS and "take advantage of this unique product," along with the DSi and the DSi XL, the company will not restock the DS Lite.

We contacted Nintendo to ask if it's still manufacturing and shipping the DS Lite to other retailers. Charlie Scibetta, senior director of corporate communications at Nintendo of America told us, "Nintendo DS Lite is still available at most retail locations. Consumers will be able to find Nintendo DS Lite without much trouble."
GameStop no longer stocking Nintendo DS Lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Apr 2011 19:46:00 EST. This Sunday, the 3DS launches in the US and, to celebrate the occasion, US-based megastore Walmart is offering quite the deal for anyone who lives in one of a dozen states. When purchasing the new handheld, consumers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and South Carolina will have the option of trading in their used DS for a $100 credit towards their 3DS purchase. If they've got two old DS systems laying around, both can be traded in for $200 towards a 3DS, but that's as high as Walmart's willing to go.

The trade-in program will start this Sunday with the 3DS launch and continue through April 30. This promotion is in-store only -- sorry, no online orders.
Select Walmart stores offering $100 credit toward 3DS with old DS trade-in originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 19:10:00 EST. The retailer has discounted the ubiquitous handheld to $74.97 in-store, in Metallic Rose, Metallic Silver, Crimson/Black, and Cobalt/Black.

At that price, you can't expect every store to have a bunch of systems in stock, so be sure to check online using the "Find it in store" button on the website. Strangely, even the variants labeled "Not available in stores" on each product page did have units available in stores once we put our ZIP code in and checked.
DS Lites for $75 at Radio Shack stores originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 13:30:00 EST. We'd like to congratulate Devo, David Bowie and Marvin Gaye for reaching one of the highest highs in the music industry. That would be appearing in a game with no fewer than three Taylor Swift songs: Band Hero. The artists' featured hits are part of the latest batch of announced tracks -- all of which you can find after the break -- for the tweenybopper spin-off.

Also, do we have any volunteers to dive into the belly of Band Hero and rescue the totally awesome "In a Big Country" Saving Private Ryan-style? It ... it doesn't deserve this.
Continue reading David Bowie, Styx, Yellowcard & others join Band Hero

David Bowie, Styx, Yellowcard & others join Band Hero originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Oct 2009 10:44:00 EST. Rumor spread that everything would be region-locked -- that all Japanese games would be incompatible with an American DSi. That's not true. So far, only DSiWare has been proven region-locked, as a function of region-specific DSi Shops. In addition, Nintendo has said that DSi-exclusive games would be region-locked. But you can still play any normal DS game on any DS system, including the DSi.

NeoGAFfer t3nmilez provides an account that helps clarify the DSi region-locking situation. He imported The Idolm@ster Dearly Stars, which has extra camera features when used in a DSi, and it didn't register in his American DSi; though it worked in an American DS Lite and a Japanese DSi. From this, we can infer that (if his DSi isn't busted) DSi-enhanced games are regionally encoded just like DSi-only games. So if you want to play The Idolm@ster, make sure you have either a Japanese DSi or a DS Lite.

[Via GoNintendo]
DSi-enhanced Idolm@ster is region-locked originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Sep 2009 12:45:00 EST. Nintendo has "ceased" production of the Polar White and Metallic Silver models, which have been available since launch and October 2007, respectively. Looking to pick up a DSi at launch, but not sure what to do with your old DS Lite? Brits will be able to trade it in at their local GAME and pick up the new model for half price. That's £74.99, in case you're wondering. GAME's operations director, Robert Quinn, claims that the company will "have plenty of stock and some fantastic launch offers to give customers the best possible experience."

If you're not willing to part with your old DS Lite, the offer also extends to unwanted Xbox 360s, PSP-3000s and Wiis. To be honest, though, all of those are worth far more than the 75 quid you'd be getting in return. The DSi is released in Europe on April 3 and will retail for £150. That gives you plenty of time to hunt around the house for your old DS Lite box. You do still have it, right?
Half-price DSi when you trade in a console at GAME originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. If you're an environmentally conscious DS Lite owner with a proclivity for modding, you may want to check out a recent Instructable that shows how to craft a solar-powered DS "Light" using relatively inexpensive components. By attaching solar panels to the top and bottom of the system, you can get a sun-fueled trickle-charge which should keep you from ever needing to plug in your Gore-approved handheld ever again.

Unfortunately, you have to leave your system lying on its easily blemished belly for a bit in order to get an adequate amount of power, but such is the cost of Earth's climatological salvation.

[Via Engadget]
No charger required for the solar-powered DS 'Light' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 19:45:00 EST. The Wii has had a tough time in Korea, but the same cannot be said of the DS. The little handheld that could has sold over 2 million units in the region since it launched little over a year ago -- a surprise considering the company only passed the 1 million milestone last month.
Uh-oh, we've trotted out the "It Prints Money" image. That must mean DS Lite has sold well for the quadrillionth time; and it has. In this case, it beat its own record in the UK for single-week sales, set this time last year.

MCV reports that the DS Lite was the best-selling system for the week of November 29 to December 6, with UK shoppers snapping up more of the handheld than they have any other games machine in a seven-day period ever.

The site quotes GFK-ChartTrack director, Dorian Bloch, as divining, "We can now assume that if there is still some DS Lite stock in the land in the next couple of weeks, the record will go again." Go, DS Lite, go. In this case, the "D" in "DS" stands for "dangerous." BBC News reports that the British government is warning parents about the dangers of counterfeit Nintendo DS and DS Lite systems being imported into the UK. According to the BBC, these "fake" handhelds include power adapters prone to catching fire. Well, the DS' codename was Nitro ...

HM Revenue & Customs rep, Claire Merrills, told the BBC that there could be something more sinister going on here than mere crappy adapters errupting into flames. She cautioned parents, saying that "When you buy these goods, you're not funding our economy, you're actually funding criminals in these far off places and it could be linked to terrorism." Yes, she went there.

Her advice for avoiding these knockoff terror devices: Check to make sure they're real. Our advice: If it's half the price of a DS, advertised as "brand new," and called a "Nintando D-Light," pass on it, 'kay? We're dying (not by fire) to see one of these things, actually. UK readers: you have your mission. Pictures in comments if you can find one, por favor.

British gov't warns parents about 'fake' DS Lites originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 15:20:00 EST. Knockoff electronics must be a big issue in the UK, because the BBC is airing a public service advisary from Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs that takes extra care to show parents and other potential gaming consumers the warning signs of counterfeit goods. Not only is it a danger to shoppers because it's not what they intended to purchase, but because these counterfeit devices could pose a fire hazard or some other danger to the child or children the gift is intended for. They provide a handy little checklist that allows consumers to know if they're looking at a legit Nintendo handheld or some knockoff.

UK parents instructed about knockoff consoles originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 13:58:00 EST. Nintendo's DSi has sold 535,379 units in Japan since its November 1 launch, according to a report from Enterbrain. The latest cog in the company's perpetual money-making machine was reportedly short on supply for the first few weeks, which most readers should know by now is the modus operandi.

To date, the DS lineup has sold over 24 million in Japan since launching December 2004.
With the Nintendo DSi releasing to the public in Japan (and to some of us who wanted it too much to wait), we imagine many folk might still hold on to their DS Lite or Phat for homebrew or any other reason. It's not that there won't be DSi homebrew in the future, just, for now, the community isn't as diverse and robust as that for the original DS systems. And why get rid of such a sleek and sexy handheld?

With that in mind, will you be haning on to your DS when you inevitably break down and get your own DSi? Or will you trade in, sell, or pass on your DS when you get a DSi of your own? Made any plans?
DS Daily: What to do with you? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. In what has become a holiday tradition as beloved and predictable as your Uncle Jack tipping a few (or 17) back and daring you to punch him in the stomach, Nintendo is releasing two new DS bundles just in time for the shopping season.

Beginning on Black Friday, you can look for a red DS emblazoned with Mario's trademark "M" and packaged with New Super Mario Bros., as well as an Ice Blue model that's packing Brain Age and a custom carrying case. Well, you can look for the $149.99 bundles beginning on Black Friday, but don't be surprised if it's mid-February by the time a soccer mom decides against cutting your brake lines for buying one out from under her.
Nintendo adding Mario Red, Ice Blue DS bundles this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 08:30:00 EST. This one is a bit odd.

IGN recently published a kind of "What if?" story about connecting the DS and Wii versions of Guitar Hero together, to form some kind of Voltron-like super game. That's all well and good and we'll be the first to say that daydreaming is fun, but there was something curious tucked away within the three pages there.

"With a Wii channel already in the works that would output DS's audio from your TV speakers, it would be an impressive next step to sync the DS game with Wii, and use Guitar Hero Wii to truly interact with the pocket version." Wait a minute, there's a Channel in the works to output your DS's audio from your TV speakers? This is the first we've heard of anything like this (only the Speaker Channel comes to mind, but that's specifically for Band Brothers DX, so it doesn't fit).

What do you guys think? Error on IGN's part, or did they let something slip?

[Thanks, Sonic_13!]
New Wii Channel in the works? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Oct 2008 13:36:00 EST. While we normally hear about new DS Lite SKUs fairly far in advance, Amazon sneaked a new version of Nintendo's money-printing handheld onto their virtual shelves today -- a Polar White console adorned with the universal logo for breast cancer awareness, a pink ribbon. The handheld retails for the standard price of $129.99, though Nintendo has agreed to donate $5 from every purchase to a cancer research charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, promising a minimum donation of $100,000. Sure, it may not be the most stylish DS Lite model to date -- but it's certainly the most altruistic.

[Via DSF]
Nintendo fighting breast cancer with limited edition Pink Ribbon DS Lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Sep 2008 16:00:00 EST.
We must admit, we've got limited edition DS Lites on the brain recently. We're wondering, out of all of the wonderful handhelds to pick from, what exactly is your favorite limited edition Lite? Are you a fan of the black Pokemon handheld? Do you enjoy the simple beauty of the Triforce-wielding gold DS Lite? We imagine that you, like us, have a cupboard in your dwelling that contains a dozen or so different models and hues of Nintendo's latest handheld. Every morning, you peruse your collection, trying to decide which DS suits your mood for that day -- perhaps the triforce-branded DS Lite, or the classic gray brick? As your ponder, you realize your collection is incomplete without the Poké-flavored handheld that reared its head in Japan nearly two years ago. You then consider selling your kidneys on the black market to afford a plane ticket to Tokyo, until your pushy physician informs you that you might need those.

Good news -- your precious organs can remain part of your body, as North American Gamestops recently began promoting the special edition DS Lite, branded with the critters on Pokémon Diamond and Pearl's box art -- Dialga and Palkia. The paltry sum of $129.99 will net you the system, a matching case, a 22-minute Pokémon Dungeon DVD, a poster featuring fellow pocket-sized monster Grovyle, and a T-shirt. No release date was announced for the bundle, but if Nintendo wishes for the new model to be truly relevant, we suggest launching it sometime last year.
North American Gamestops to catch Palkia/Dialga DS Lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 09 Aug 2008 14:30:00 EST. In fact, we'd say we're too protective. We only clean our screens with a damp 2-ply toilet paper. The extra ply is for safety.

How do you keep your precious looking pristine? Do you use screen protectors? Will there be a new DS? A new handheld altogether? A new array of DS Lite colors instead? Nearly anything is possible, and while we wait, bouncing up and down on our toes and struggling to remember to breathe through the excitement, it's a good time to look back at the history of Nintendo's handhelds. From the extensive Game & Watch collection to a few portables you may have forgotten, Nintendo has a rich and storied handheld history, and it's one we celebrate every day -- just not like this.

It's been awhile since we asked you, and what with our community growing all the time, we figured it was time we discussed what model DS Lite you've gone with. Were you there for the first handhelds to release locally, or could you not simply wait and just had to import one like, say, the Enamel Navy model? Are you still rocking the Phat? How's your handheld situation?

DS Daily: What color do you bleed? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 08:00:00 EST. Yesterday, we talked a bit about limited edition DS Lites. Sure, most of them are only available in Japan, but that doesn't keep us from drooling all over them anyway. Did you check them out? What do you think?

When looking them over, it's hard for us to choose a favorite. With so many great handhelds in one place, you can understand the difficulty we're having in choosing one. So, why don't you? What's your favorite limited edition DS Lite? Fan of the Zelda-themed handheld, or more for the simple style of the metallic blends? Which is your favorite?
DS Daily: Choosing a favorite originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 08:00:00 EST. Think of the things our generation of handheld companions could have taught us! Geometry from Tetris! Microbiology from Dr. Mario! Animal husbandry from Pokémon!

To be fair, the program (which was recently examined in a Reuters write-up) requires students at Japan's Joshi Gakuen all-girl junior high school to use special English-instructing software with the handhelds, which are collected at the end of each class to prevent any unsavory Pokédueling during recess. The program is just barely into its one-year trial period, though the school's vice principal is very optimistic -- if only he knew he was actually transforming his pupils into rot-brained, knife-wielding miscreants!
Japanese classrooms using Nintendo DS to teach English originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 28 Jun 2008 20:00:00 EST. Some puns take time to take root and mature, like a fine vine.

Okay, but seriously, the news: Nintendo has announced that the "Metallic Rose" DS Lite, a pinkish sort of model that many may feel compelled to bury in the garden, will become available at retailers "later this month." The model was previously attainable only as part of a Nintendogs bundle.

As of May 19th, you'll be able to see the Rose shown off in commercials which star "celebrity spokespeople" like Carrie Underwood and America Ferrera. Another commercial will feature Liv Tyler, the odd one out with a Crimson/Black DS and a name that doesn't sound completely made up.

[Via DS Fanboy]
Nintendo to start petal-ing 'Metallic Rose' DS Lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 May 2008 21:30:00 EST. While we all think it would be totally rad if Nintendo issued either another redesigned DS model or a whole new handheld unit altogether, certain things must be considered first. Like, will it make Nintendo some money? Also, is there a demand? And, finally, is the DS as it is now outdated and no longer a viable option for the consumer?

Let's look at the facts, folks:

The original Game Boy released in 1989 and saw several revisions, including a color change in 1995, a smaller system in the Game Boy Pocket in 1996, the Game Boy Light in 1997 and the Game Boy Color in 1998

The Game Boy Advance released in 2001 and saw 2 revisions before it was officially retired, with the Game Boy Advance SP releasing in 2003 and the Game Boy Advance Micro releasing in 2005

The original DS was released in 2004 and since has received one revision, in the DS Lite, which released in 2006

But, this is not all that needs be considered. For one, the DS Lite is still selling incredibly well, and Nintendo might think to adopt the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" plan of attack on this one, choosing to sit back and let the thing sell as long as it possibly can. However, due to the lowering manufacturing costs and Nintendo's profit on each unit sold, a revision with newer features might be manufactured for the same, or a very similar, price. This would allow Nintendo to sell the new unit at a higher price than the DS Lite and make even more money on each handheld sold. There goes the answer to the first question.

What about demand? Well, the demand for the existing DS Lite is there, but we'll be the first to tell you that, while we love the handheld , it's not perfect. Alterations in the best interest of the handheld may still be made, including generic improvements such as improving battery life and the like.If the people still love the DS Lite, we find little reason for them not to upgrade and froth at the mouth for something like a DS Liter.

What about its use to the consumer? Does it still remain a great choice for the general consumer? Sure, but in technology years, the thing is like a Brontosauras with Jesus resting comfortably on top of it. What we're saying is, the thing is old. While its appeal may never go away thanks to the easy control scheme and mountains of amazing titles available for it, one cannot ignore the competition. As new features are released everyday for Sony's PSP system, the DS Lite is increasingly dwarfed by the technological wizardry capable with Sony's handheld. If Nintendo went with a new version of the DS, we'd like to see them implement some of the more standard technological features that exist in other handheld devices on the market.

So will Nintendo release a revision to the DS? Sure, whether it's a new handheld entirely or a new DS, Nintendo would be crazy not to build on what they have with the DS Lite. Will we see it at E3 this year? This blogger thinks so, because, to be honest, what other megatons could they possibly drop on us?

You know, the kind of juice you can jack on with.

So do you have a special place set aside for charging? In the latest issue of Japanese gaming rag Famitsu, publisher Hirokazu Hamamura speculates that a new version of Nintendo's best-selling handheld may be revealed at this summer's E3 trade show.

As detailed in a Bloomberg Japan report (sketchy machine translation), Hamamura's comments seem based on nothing more than industry chatter and pure conjecture on his part -- Nintendo predictably offered up a no comment. The timing does seem about right, though -- going back to the Game Boy days, Nintendo has released a new portable hardware revision roughly every two years since 1996's Game Boy Pocket (1998: Game Boy Color; 2001: Game Boy Advance; 2003: GBASP; 2004: Nintendo DS; 2005: Game Boy Micro; 2006: DS Lite). We have to admit that the first time we saw the elegant, though not particularly guitar-like peripheral Activision had created for the DS' Guitar Hero: On Tour, we were concerned. It wasn't the missing orange button (we're fans of anything getting easier, whether it's fake guitar playing or cutting things), no, we were more worried that owners of the original DS (the DS Phat, on the streets) would be excluded from the fun by their system's girth.

But now, Activision has dispelled our fears with the announcement that the Guitar Grip will work with both of the models. Now, Phatties, as for actually being able to see the notes in anything but perfect lighting, we're afraid you're on your own on that one.

Just by looking at a handful of recent hardware sales charts, the Big N's dominance over the land of the rising sun is explicitly clear -- the Wii always sold like hotcakes, and the DS Lite consistently took the top spot on the list. Over the holiday sales season, however, the DS earned its most notable bragging right to date, breaking the PS2 Japanese lifetime sales record by the skin of its teeth.

According to recent Media Create sales numbers (as crunched and compiled by NeoGAF), the DS has sold 20,954,157 units to date in Japan, compared to the PS2's 20,901,468. Though Nintendo's touchable handheld hasn't yet approached the worldwide console sales record (an honor which the PS2 still holds by a considerable margin), being the highest selling console in one of the most-gaming centric nations in the world is still a pretty sizable victory. It seems that Black Friday was very, very, very good to Nintendo, as both the DS Lite and the Wii performed quite impressively in the U.S. over the holiday week.

Nintendo has announced that it sold 653,000 DS Lites over the week of November 18-24, setting a new record for the portable, for Nintendo, and for the entire industry. The number of units moved is record-breaking, exceeding the industry's previous record, also held by Nintendo with the Game Boy Advance's sales during Thanksgiving 2005.

The Wii also performed quite admirably, selling 350,000 units, a number topped only by the console's launch week. No word on how these sales figures compare to Sony or Microsoft's, but it's not like it's a competition or anything, right?

Update: Specified sales figures as pertaining to the U.S., and clarified the record as industry-wide.

Read -- Nintendo Sales Go Through the Roof During Thanksgiving Week [GameDaily]
Read -- Nintendo Has Its Biggest Week Of Sales... Hideous name, and less-than-hideous hardware. CYBER Gadget's "Familator Lite" plugs into a DS Lite's GBA slot, allowing users to insert their Famicom cartridges and re-live their favorite Nintendo classics in portable form.

Would rather re-live the classics on television? The device allows for TV out. Would rather play with the original Famicom controllers? Well... the device doesn't do that, actually. But it does that other stuff!

The Familator Lite is due out in Japan in December, but no price has been set. Sadly, the device's form factor means it's only compatible with the DS Lite, and not its phatter older brother.

[Via DS Fanboy]
Play Famicom games on your DS Lite with 'Familator' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Nov 2007 14:00:00 EST.
