It's about the <em>big picture</em>, and now there's an actual big picture to help put the figurative one in perspective.<br /><br />The above infographic (available in its entirety <a href="http://venturebeat.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/statista-portable-console-sales-chart.jpg">here</a>) was compiled by <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2012/03/04/ps-vita-sales-vs-psp-3ds-ds/">VentureBeat</a> using information provided by <a href="http://www.statista.com/statistics/219739/global-first-week-sales-of-the-playstation-vita-and-other-handhelds/">Statista</a>. It shows how the Vita's first week of sales compares to the those seen by the DS, 3DS and PSP in different regions, as well as globally. For some <em>bonus</em> relevancy, it also ranks the best-selling handheld consoles of all time.<br /><br />If anything, it proves that tastes vary widely by region, and that relatively low first-week sales (see: PSP sales in Japan) don't necessarily translate to poor lifetime performance. It also reaffirms that infographics are <em>the coolest</em> way to display statistical data.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/04/see-how-the-vitas-first-week-sales-stack-up-in-this-handy-infog/">See how the Vita's first-week sales stack up in this handy infographic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 04 Mar 2012 21:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-xiii-2"><em>Final Fantasy XIII-2</em></a>, the latest sequel-sequel from the <strike>androgyny</strike> JRPG veterans at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a>, has closed its first week of sales in the land of the rising sun, with somewhat mixed results. The PS3 version of the title has sold 524,000 units according to <a href="http://andriasang.com/comzh1/ffxiii2_sellthrough/">Andriasang's translation</a> of Media Create's extremely Japanese sales data, making it the number 1 selling title for the period. This is in stark contrast to the 360 version of the game, which entered the charts at number 48 with a comparatively minuscule 10,000 units sold.<br />
<br />
Having the number 1 game in Japan is definitely nothing to be ashamed of, but the accomplishment seems somewhat less impressive when compared to <em>Final Fantasy XIII</em>'s combined first-week sales of 1,502,000 copies, nearly three times <em>XIII-2</em>'s combined 525,000. Media Create attributes the drop in sales to a drop in interest among Japanese female gamers: 22.2 percent of women surveyed were interested in <em>XIII-2</em>, down nearly ten points from <em>XIII</em>'s 31.3 percent Japanese female interest rate.<br />
<br />
It's also possible that the interest decline among Japanese women was negligible at best, considering that the game was <em>the best selling release in the country</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/26/ffxiii-2-first-week-sales-roughly-a-third-of-ffxiiis-first-week/">FFXIII-2 first week sales roughly a third of FFXIII's first week sales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Dec 2011 19:30:00 EST. The PlayStation Vita has sold 321,407 units in its first week at Japanese retail, reports Famitsu. The "first week" may be a little misleading, given the handheld's launch date and Enterbrain's reporting deadline, as it only covers two days: December 17 and 18.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://andriasang.com/comzfc/ps_vita_sales/">Andriasang</a> pulled the "first week" sales for the 3DS and PSP as well, which sold 371,326 units (covering 2/26/2011 and 2/27/2011) and 166,074 units (covering just 12/12/2004), respectively.<br />
<br />
The Vita begins its international wanderlust on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/18/playstation-vita-to-launch-in-north-america-on-february-22/">February 22, 2012</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/20/ps-vita-moves-321k-in-first-week-at-japanese-retail/">PS Vita moves 321K in first week at Japanese retail</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 09:05:00 EST.
