Behind the scenes, EA is dropping licensing ties to real-life gun manufacturers, but on-screen it still intends to use branded guns in its games. Most recently, EA has worked with gun manufacturers such as McMillan Group International and gun magazine maker Magpul to promote <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor-warfighter"><em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter</em></a>, but now those deals are off - even though EA still plans to use name-brand guns in its shooters.<br />
<br />
"We're telling a story and we have a point of view," EA Labels President Frank Gibeau tells <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/07/videogames-guns-idUSL2N0CS2A220130507">Reuters</a>. "A book doesn't pay for saying the word 'Colt,' for example."<br />
<br />
EA spokesman Jeff Brown says branded weapons lend games "enhanced authenticity," which is why EA wants to keep them in its games. However, all official agreements between EA and gun companies are now severed. "The action games we will release this year will not include licensed images of weapons," Brown says.<br />
<br />
Following December's mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gun-violence/">NRA and a handful of politicians and pundits</a> blamed video games for encouraging gun violence. One week after the shooting, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said video games represented "a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people."<br />
<br />
Brown says that the NRA's comments have nothing to do with its decision: "The response from our audience was pretty clear: They feel the comments from the NRA were a simple attempt to change the subject."<br />
<br />
EA is currently involved in a lawsuit with Bell Helicopter, who argues that use of its helicopters in the Battlefield games goes beyond fair use and infringes on Bell's trademark. A jury trial is set for June to decide the issue, which could easily apply to EA's new gun-licensing theory.<br />
<br />
 <strong>Update:</strong> Jeff Brown tells <a href="http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/05/no-ea-wont-license-guns-in-its-2013-games-but-it-never-has/">Ars Technica</a> that EA has never paid a licensing fee to a gun manufacturer, nor has it been paid to use specific branded guns in its games. EA will simply continue this practice in the future.<br />
<br />
"No other EA game or service has used licensed gun images in a game," Brown says.<br />
<br />
EA did work with McMillan and Magpul for that <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter </em>campaign, a charity benefiting veterans that encouraged gun makers featured in the game to donate. Those that did were featured on a <em>Warfighter</em> sub-page as "authentic brands" in the game. All of the money went straight to the charity, Brown says.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/08/ea-kills-licensing-deals-with-gun-makers-keeps-those-guns-in-ga/">EA kills licensing deals with gun makers, keeps those guns in games [Update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 May 2013 13:45:00 EST. Following <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/26/medal-of-honor-warfighter-review/#review">poor commercial and critical reception</a> in October, EA is taking Medal of Honor out of commission.<br /><br />"The game was solid, but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers," EA COO Peter Moore said. "Critics were polarized and gave the game scores which were, frankly, lower than it deserved. This one is behind us now. We are taking Medal of Honor out of the rotation and have a plan to bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings."<br /><br />EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said EA missed the mark, and the marketplace, with Medal of Honor: "We're in a hit-driven business where it's about what you can build in a certain period of time and really deliver for the marketplace, and frankly we missed on Medal of Honor. And we take responsibility for that."<br /><br />Gibeau continued, "If you look at Medal of Honor as a specific case, it was really about a hit missing."<br /><br />EA's remaining shooter repertoire includes the Battlefield and Bad Company franchises, Army of Two and, err, Syndicate.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/30/ea-medal-of-honor-is-out-of-rotation-following-poor-warfighte/">EA: Medal of Honor is 'out of rotation' following poor Warfighter scores</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Jan 2013 17:35:00 EST. They show the country in a very poor light."<br /><br />The owner of Pakistan capital Islamabad's largest retail game store said that he hadn't heard about the ban and that both games were "hot sellers." <em>Black Ops 2</em> sold more than 5,000 copies since its launch and <em>Warfighter </em>sold 1,000 in Pakistan, the owner said. Pirated versions of both games were still available </span>in Pakistan<span>, some selling for less than $2, and these figures didn't contribute to official sales numbers.</span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/23/black-ops-2-warfighter-banned-in-pakistan-for-depicting-country/">Black Ops 2, Warfighter banned in Pakistan for depicting country in 'very poor light'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jan 2013 17:00:00 EST. The Chitral Compound and the Darra Gun Market are featured here again, and both maps will host the game's frantic multiplayer gameplay.<br /><br />The Zero Dark Thirty pack is free if you picked up the Limited or Deluxe versions of <em>Warfighter</em>, and it'll be available during the week of December 17, just a few days before the movie arrives in theaters. The new update adds "initial support" for <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor-warfighter">Medal of Honor: Warfighter</a></em>, as well as support for the iPhone 5 according to the Battlelog Twitter account. The <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/app/ea-battlelog/id505311163">iTunes listing</a> for Battlelog also notes that the update packs in support for iOS 6 (though strangely doesn't mention the <em>Warfighter</em> support).<br /><br />Finally, Battlelog can put that extra screen real estate to use, giving you more space than ever for your friends' aggressive victory messages and lewd emoticons.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/01/battlelog-ios-app-gets-moh-warfighter-update-support-for-iphon/">Battlelog iOS app gets MoH: Warfighter update, support for iPhone 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 15:00:00 EST. No less than three times the pair of titles were mentioned in a negative manner, particularly when compared to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/30/battlefield-3-premium-sells-2m-subscriptions-fifa-13-sells-7-4m/">success of <em>Battlefield 3 Premium</em> and <em>FIFA 13</em></a>.<br /><br />"We are managing the ups and downs. Our Q1 and Q2 were better than expected. Our Q3 appears soft, due mostly to <em>Medal of Honor</em>," said EA CEO John Riccitiello. He went on that the company reduced its guidance for the year because of the "weakness in Q3 associated with <em>Medal of Honor</em>."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/31/ea-gets-a-new-cfo/">New CFO Blake Jorgensen</a> also mentioned <em>Medal of Honor</em>'s "weaker than expected performance" in his prepared remarks, also mentioning the decision to cancel the company's NBA title would also impact Q3 performance.<br /><br />"EA Sports is committed to basketball and we will publish a basketball game when we can match the quality of franchises like Madden NFL, NHL Hockey, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and FIFA soccer," remarked EA labels prez Frank Gibeau later. He went on to note that <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter</em>'s critical reception fell below expectations, but that the company feels it's a "good game with a receptive audience."<br /><br />EA plans to support <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter</em> with more marketing over the holidays, and, as Gibeau put it, going to school to improve NBA and meet EA Sports' standard of quality.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/30/ea-recognizes-q3-will-be-soft-due-to-medal-of-honor-warfighte/">EA recognizes Q3 will be 'soft' due to Medal of Honor: Warfighter, lack of NBA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Oct 2012 19:00:00 EST. Specifically, the "Global Warfighters" achievement, awarded for unlocking "a soldier from each unit, and the "Warchief" achievement, awarded for unlocking all soldiers in multiplayer, will not unlock when the requirements are met.<br /><br />The majority of the complaints seem to center around the Xbox 360 version of the game, though the problem has been reported on the PS3 version as well. For the moment, there doesn't appear to be a solution or workaround. We've contacted EA for comment.<br /><br />[Thanks, Brandon!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/29/some-medal-of-honor-warfighter-achievements-not-unlocking-prope/">Some Medal of Honor: Warfighter achievements not unlocking properly</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EST. This is either a sign of the media's impotence or a hat tip to the brilliance of publisher EA that it withheld review copies until launch. A similar situation occurred with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-6">Resident Evil 6</a></em> a few <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/08/fifa-13-still-on-top-in-uk-resident-evil-6-just-dance-4-debut/">weeks ago</a>, a game which still sits pretty at tenth place on this week's chart.<br /><br />Other new releases last week included portable games <em>Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask</em> and <em>Moshi Monsters: Moshlings Theme Park, </em>which debuted at eighth and ninth place, respectively.<br /><br />If you're wondering about <em>Just Dance 4</em> ('cause how can you not on the UK charts?), it may have slipped two spots from fourth to sixth, but sales were actually up one percent. <em>Dance Central 3</em> debuted in 39th place. Shimmy on past the break for the UK top ten.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/29/medal-of-honor-warfighter-unseats-fifa-on-uk-charts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter unseats FIFA on UK charts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/29/medal-of-honor-warfighter-unseats-fifa-on-uk-charts/">Medal of Honor: Warfighter unseats FIFA on UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Oct 2012 09:45:00 EST. If Danger Close keeps executing this poorly, this once-loved series may be dangerously close to being put in a casket."</li> <li> <a href="http://www.oxmonline.com/medal-honor-warfighter-review">OXM</a> <strong>(50/100</strong>): "You'll also roll your eyes at cloying cutscenes that never bother to introduce a worthwhile villain, and are instead crammed with insulting caricatures of unhappy military wives. In an attempt to build a bridge across <em>Battlefield 3</em> and <em>Call of Duty</em>, Danger Close has once again fallen into the hole between them."</li> <li> <a href="http://darkstation.com/reviews/xbox-360/medal-of-honor-warfighter/">DarkStation</a> <strong>(40/100</strong>): "Here's the aggravating truth: <em>Warfighter</em> is bad. After playing through <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter</em>'s campaign, it's clear Danger Close failed in its objective.<br /><br />Danger Close's promise manifests in a few brief cutscenes that show snippets of protagonist Preacher's life. Here's Preacher in a hospital bed, there's Preacher sitting in a cafe with his family. Now we see his wife having a terse, passive-aggressive phone conversation - presumably while he's out on a mission - as she sadly stares out the window of an empty motel room. There's clearly some strife, but we never get a glimpse at why this man does what he does. Does he just love to shoot bad guys? Is he in it to protect his country?<br /><br />Some men were just born to fight wars, I guess.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/">Medal of Honor: Warfighter (10/11/2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353847"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwnovagrand01wm-1349941968_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353848"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwnovagrand02wm-1349941970_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353849"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwsarajevostadium01wm_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353850"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwsarajevostadium02wm_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353851"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwshogorevalley01wm_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/26/medal-of-honor-warfighter-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Medal of Honor Warfighter review: The single shot</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/26/medal-of-honor-warfighter-review/">Medal of Honor Warfighter review: The single shot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 10:00:00 EST. The PS3 and PC patch are "already staged," while the Xbox patch is "on its way."<br /><br />Some changes seem to be fairly standard, adjusting weapon speed and damage and the like. Others seem to fix more fundamental issues, such as making sure players can't join private parties without first being invited, or ensuring that the team voice chat channel <em>can't</em> be heard by the opposing team.<br /><br />A handful of single-player issues have been rectified as well, though it's difficult to say how significant the issues were without a frame of reference. Among the changes are making the default difficulty normal instead of easy, fixing certain instances of unresponsive controls, improving single-player stability and fixing "progression stoppers."<br /><br />The <em>Warfighter</em> blog notes that the patch is designed to "ensure that your experience when the game ships is outstanding." However significant the changes are, it's apparent that EA found them important enough to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/23/psa-joystiqs-review-of-medal-of-honor-warfighter-coming-soon/">hold back press review copies</a> until the patch was deployed. Joystiq's review will be up as soon as possible.<br /><br />You can read the full patch notes <a href="http://battlelog.medalofhonor.com/mohw/news/view/2832654786849984138/">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/23/medal-of-honor-warfighter-day-one-patch-notes/">Medal of Honor: Warfighter day-one patch notes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 11:30:00 EST. Hopefully, these reviews help you to decide what's worth playing in this busy (and expensive!) season.<br /><br />To that end, we wanted to let our readers know that Joystiq's review of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor-warfighter"><em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter</em></a> will not be published today. EA has planned a day-one patch for <em>Warfighter</em> and has thus decided not to make review copies of the game available to media outlets until today, the day of its retail release.<br /><br />We should get our hands on the final version of the game today, and will publish our review as soon as we've had adequate time to construct a proper critique. In the meantime, you <em>probably</em> have enough new games to keep you busy as it is, and we appreciate your patience. If you decide to pick up <em>Warfighter</em> anyway, we'll see you online!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/23/psa-joystiqs-review-of-medal-of-honor-warfighter-coming-soon/">PSA: Joystiq's review of Medal of Honor: Warfighter coming soon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 10:40:00 EST. EA will deploy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/10/medal-of-honor-warfighter-promotes-zero-dark-thirty-film-with/">a $9.99 multiplayer map pack</a> in honor of the film, part of the proceeds of which will go to charity through EA's Project Honor program - all pre-orders will get the additional maps free of charge.<br /><br />The program was initiated with the goal of "raising awareness and generating charitable contributions for fallen warriors from the Special Operations Community." The Zero Dark Thirty map pack includes two multiplayer locales based on real locations where Osama Bin Laden was suspected of hiding in Pakistan: the Darra Gun Market and Chitral Compound. Feel free to gather intel on each in the video above.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-zero-dark-thirty-dlc/">Medal of Honor Warfighter (Zero Dark Thirty DLC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-zero-dark-thirty-dlc/#5271200"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/moh9101_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-zero-dark-thirty-dlc/#5271201"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/moh9102_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/20/medal-of-honor-warfighter-trailer-tours-zero-dark-thirty-maps/">Medal of Honor: Warfighter trailer tours Zero Dark Thirty maps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 20 Oct 2012 15:00:00 EST. At the heart of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor-warfighter"><em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter</em></a> is an interesting co-op dynamic, where two players are paired together into a fire team.<br /><br />There are six different classes in total that can pair up to form interesting compliments to each other; however, from the first moments of <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter </em>multiplayer, Danger Close oddly chose to have one class unlocked. It takes a few hours before you have them all unlocked, as I experienced during a recent private multiplayer event. (You can sample the multiplayer now in an exclusive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/05/psa-medal-of-honor-warfighter-in-open-beta-on-xbox-live/">Xbox Live beta</a>.)<br /><br />The initial barriers to other classes is a very odd design decision, meant to ease you into the experience. For someone like myself who has played tons of shooters and is well-versed in class-based multiplayer, it was an unnecessary stopgap and only served to invalidate the single best feature in multiplayer: fire teams.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/">Medal of Honor: Warfighter (10/11/2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353847"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwnovagrand01wm-1349941968_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353848"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwnovagrand02wm-1349941970_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353849"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwsarajevostadium01wm_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353850"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwsarajevostadium02wm_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-10-11-2012/#5353851"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/mohwshogorevalley01wm_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/11/getting-friendly-in-medal-of-honor-warfighters-multiplayer-mod/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Getting friendly in Medal of Honor: Warfighter's multiplayer mode</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/11/getting-friendly-in-medal-of-honor-warfighters-multiplayer-mod/">Getting friendly in Medal of Honor: Warfighter's multiplayer mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Oct 2012 09:45:00 EST. The mission opens up with a beach siege by boat while our stalwart crew of Stumps and company are under heavy fire.<br /><br />This particular mission features a diverse array of set pieces and gameplay scenarios that keep things from stagnating and falling into the usual shooter doldrums. What starts as the usual cover-based shootouts eventually segues into breaching heavily defended rooms full of Somali pirates, leading to a portion where you must control a heavily-outfitted drone to clear the debris of a recently bombarded building full of errant pirates.<br /><br />Shore Leave ultimately culminates in a particularly tense sniper segment where the Tier 1s must clear distant rooftops of RPG-wielding baddies so that a chopper convoy can come in and clean up the town. And by clean up the town I mean shoot every single guy who doesn't have a ZZ Top beard.<br /><br />In addition to Shore Leave, another single-player mission was available: Hot Pursuit. This mission places players behind the wheel as they chase down a suspect through the streets of Karachi, a massive city in Pakistan.<br /><br />Danger Close Games tapped talent from EA Canada to help develop this driving mission, which sees a Tier 1 operator tear through vendors and shacks with reckless abandon. Honestly, I felt like kind of a jerk just plowing through peoples' lives like that.<br /><br />Hot Pursuit has a lot of the same principles seen in Shore Leave - spectacle and large set-piece moments. I was impressed with the mission and the driving felt very solid, not the heavy tank-on-ice vehicle I expected from a driving mission in a shooter. Even though Hot Pursuit is quite the juxtaposition, the mission didn't feel out of place in the slightest. See a trailer of the Hot Pursuit mission after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/04/medal-of-honor-warfighter-heads-to-somalia-for-shore-leave/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter heads to Somalia for 'Shore Leave'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/04/medal-of-honor-warfighter-heads-to-somalia-for-shore-leave/">Medal of Honor: Warfighter heads to Somalia for 'Shore Leave'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Oct 2012 10:30:00 EST. Beyond testing out the game, participants will also receive 60 minutes of double XP when the full game launches. The beta features a new multiplayer mode called "HotSpot," in which players play king of the hill on a Sarajevo Stadium map in Bosnia.<br /><br />If three million people download the beta, EA will unlock a Linkin Park "Castle of Glass" music video early, instead of the intended five days after the beta commences. Free will dictates how humanity feels about that.<br /><br />EA recently announced (on Sept. 10, no less) that those who purchase the game early will also receive some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/10/medal-of-honor-warfighter-promotes-zero-dark-thirty-film-with/">hunt for Osama Bin Laden-inspired DLC</a>. Wait, what?<br /><br />The vaguely uncomfortable statement above is true: EA and Sony Pictures have partnered to make a map pack featuring two new multiplayer maps, Darra Gun Market and Chitral, inspired by the movie's take on the real locations, which were thought to be potential hideouts of the infamous terrorist. It'll be released in North America "the week of December 17" to coincide with the release of the movie.<br /><br />$1 of the $9.99 will be earmarked to charity through EA's Project HONOR program. Those who buy the "limited edition" (basically just the first printing) in North America will get the DLC for free.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-zero-dark-thirty-dlc/">Medal of Honor Warfighter (Zero Dark Thirty DLC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-zero-dark-thirty-dlc/#5271200"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/moh9101_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-zero-dark-thirty-dlc/#5271201"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/09/moh9102_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/10/medal-of-honor-warfighter-promotes-zero-dark-thirty-film-with/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Medal of Honor Warfighter promotes 'Zero Dark Thirty' film with multiplayer DLC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/10/medal-of-honor-warfighter-promotes-zero-dark-thirty-film-with/">Medal of Honor Warfighter promotes 'Zero Dark Thirty' film with multiplayer DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 11:00:00 EST. Beyond that, however, no one's saying a peep about the game. Lest you forget, three more DLC packs are planned for DICE's last game, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-3">Battlefield 3</a>,</em> and that apparently means DICE isn't ready to talk <em>Battlefield 4</em> just yet.<br /><br />"There is no further <em>Battlefield 4</em> news at this point," reads a post from DICE <a href="http://www.battlefield.com/battlefield4">on the <em>Battlefield 4</em> subpage</a>. "With the Back to Karkand and Close Quarters expansion packs already out, Armored Kill around the corner, and End Game and Aftermath still on the horizon, we're looking forward to many more hours of gameplay with you, and can't wait to see the stories you will tell through Battlelog and player created videos."<br /><br />With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor-2010"><em>Medal of Honor's </em>2010 reboot</a>, EA set out to match its competition's annual shooter, Call of Duty. EA's Los Angeles-based Danger Close studio is in charge of EA's Medal of Honor franchise, apparently trading off years with DICE and the Battlefield franchise. The two franchises currently share DICE's Frostbite 2.0 game engine, and Danger Close's next MoH employs DICE's Battlelog system as well. Thus far, EA has yet to best Activision's Call of Duty powerhouse (in terms of sales and critical reception) with its two shooter franchises.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/17/dice-vows-continued-support-to-battlefield-3-in-light-of-battlef/">DICE vows continued support for Battlefield 3 in light of Battlefield 4 announcement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 11:00:00 EST. According to the publisher, pre-orders of Warfighter's "limited edition" get direct access "to the exclusive Battlefield 4 beta" - of course, we've never actually seen or heard of <em>Battlefield 4</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/14/rumor-battlefield-4-outed-by-medal-of-honor-warfighter-pre-ord/">outside of a leaked image</a> revealing its existence a few days ago.<br /><br />EA's Danger Close studio is responsible for the Medal of Honor series, though Battlefield developer DICE assisted with the first MoH reboot. DICE created the Battlefield series, and it stands to reason that the Swedish studio will also be behind <em>Battlefield 4</em>. We've reached out to EA for more info.<br /><br />It seems unlikely that this reveal was unintentional, as EA UK marketing man Dan Sheridan <a href="https://twitter.com/EA_ActionMan/status/225205110685442049">tweeted</a>, "Pre-order ‪#MOH‬ Warfighter &amp; get access to ‪#BF4Beta‬" with a link to the video and <a href="http://www.medalofhonor.com/en_GB/blog/2012/07/fire-team-multiplayer-developer-commentary">preview page</a>. EA's US reps have yet to say a word.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/17/battlefield-4-announced-in-medal-of-honor-warfighter-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Battlefield 4 announced, beta arrives fall 2013</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/17/battlefield-4-announced-in-medal-of-honor-warfighter-trailer/">Battlefield 4 announced, beta arrives fall 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 08:44:00 EST. Interesting, since <em>Battlefield 4</em> doesn't really <em>exist</em> or anything yet, at least not in any sort of publicly official capacity.<br /><br />While we didn't see the advertisement on Origin with our very own eyes, it was reportedly live and functional as a promotion, if lacking specific <em>Battlefield 4</em> details, according to a corroborating report from <a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/07/14/battlefield-4-beta-advertised-on-origin">IGN</a>. It's possible that this was an accidental admission of <em>BF4</em>'s existence, but it's <em>also</em> possible that someone at EA has learned an important lesson about letting the interns near Photoshop. We've got out ears to the ground and will update with any new information.<br /><br /><small>[Thanks, Steve!]</small><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/14/rumor-battlefield-4-outed-by-medal-of-honor-warfighter-pre-ord/">Rumor: Battlefield 4 outed by Medal of Honor: Warfighter pre-order promotion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 14 Jul 2012 12:04:00 EST. My time with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor-warfighter">Medal of Honor: Warfighter</a></em> during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2012">E3 2012</a> featured as much bombastic action as expected from a war-based shooter, but it also featured another bit of confusion. I was confused as to why I would only get to play one match, but had to watch a 15 minute presentation explaining each class first. And the variety between each class - different damage models and weapon loadouts, and different bonus killstreaks for each - meant for a sharp learning curve once we finally did get into a match. It wasn't the ideal situation, a complex demo on a very tight timetable.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-e3-2012/">Medal of Honor: Warfighter (E3 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-e3-2012/#5071239"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/mohwe3screen001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-e3-2012/#5071240"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/mohwe3screen002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-e3-2012/#5071241"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/mohwe3screen003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-e3-2012/#5071242"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/mohwe3screen004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/medal-of-honor-warfighter-e3-2012/#5071243"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/mohwe3screen005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/15/confusion-of-war-in-medal-of-honor-warfighters-multiplayer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Confusion of war in Medal of Honor: Warfighter's multiplayer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/15/confusion-of-war-in-medal-of-honor-warfighters-multiplayer/">Confusion of war in Medal of Honor: Warfighter's multiplayer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jun 2012 18:00:00 EST. A new EA initiative called Project Honor aims to honor fallen vets and their families by basically putting a bunch of licensed stuff into <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor-warfighter">Medal of Honor: Warfighter</a></em>, and by selling exclusive <em>Medal of Honor</em>-branded items. Proceeds from these specific items will go to "the Navy SEAL Foundation, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and other charities."<br /><br />In addition to selling special goods, EA will also issue a special "military edition" of <em>Medal of Honor: Warfighter</em>, exclusive to active, reserve and veteran US military. This "military edition" will be sold exclusively through GovX, Inc., and will include special in-game unlocks exclusive to this special edition. You can <a href="http://www.govx.com/mohw">pre-order it right now</a> ahead of <em>Warfighter</em>'s October 23 launch date.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/14/medal-of-honor-warfighter-gets-military-only-special-edition/">Medal of Honor: Warfighter gets military-only special edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2012 06:00:00 EST. This marks the second use of Frostbite 2.0 outside of its origin studio, following last year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a>.<br /><br />After a brief on-stage presentation of the game in action, Goodrich spoke to us about how Danger Close is attempting to distinguish the game visually, despite it being built in the same engine that powers EA's <em>other</em> big shooter. To us, the game didn't look dramatically different from what we've seen in DICE's work with Frostbite 2.0, via <em>BF3</em>.<br /><br />"I don't think the engine dictates on what it's gonna look like," Goodrich said. "We have a wonderful art director who has a very clear vision of the type of lens he wants to tell our story through. The multiplayer mode features elite soldiers from 12 nations, "including the Australian SASR, British SAS, German KSK and Polish GROM among others." They'll be able to compete in head-to-head multiplayer. Pre-orders of the <a href="http://www.medalofhonor.com/limited-edition-details">limited edition version</a> will get an extra operator, the US Navy Seal Tier 1 Sniper.<br /><br />EA also detailed the story of the single-player mode, written by real US Tier 1 Operators. Warfighter stars "Preacher," whose home life is in a shambles due to frequent deployment. "But when a deadly explosive known as PETN penetrates civilian borders and his two worlds collide, Preacher and his fellow teammates are sent in to do what they do best - solve the problem."
