Recently, some Steam users reported issues with recently purchased copies of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 -- issues said to be caused by missing serial numbers required for online play that weren't included with digitally distributed copies of the game. EA today confirmed to Joystiq via Twitter that the issue had been "quickly resolved," further adding that "all is well back in Steam land." We've followed up with EA to find out the nature of the issue and for more information on its resolution, but until we hear back, you go enjoy dropping war bears into online matches. That's what they're there for, after all.
Steam users report that the downloaded copies of Red Alert 3 don't include serial numbers, which the game requires for online play.

A similar issue occurred recently through Steam with the digital sale of Spore. That problem seems to have been resolved, and at least one Red Alert 3 player has been able to rectify the current error, though the solution required the game to be re-downloaded directly from EA (complete with SecuROM DRM). Still, EA's eventual intervention in Steam's Spore issue is a possible sign that these Red Alert 3 woes will be alleviated in a more timely manner.

[Thanks, Reid]
Update: Reader Tom suggests verifying the game cache in Steam (right click in "My Games," and find it under Properties > Local Files), which apparently identifies the files that need to be replaced to enable the game to work properly. Maybe that will help!
Red Alert 3 currently unplayable online through Steam [updated] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 12:29:00 EST. Well, folks, it's not quite the Summer of Arcade anymore. Microsoft's Major Nelson has announced C&C Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge and Bubble Bobble Neo as this week's Xbox Live Arcade releases. Despite the inclusion of "C&C Red Alert 3" right there in the title, the former game is a standalone experience and can be played without the original Red Alert 3 game disc.

Each title will draw 800 ($10) from your account, assuming it doesn't go toward this week's Xbox Live deal, Lode Runner.
Listen, we know you're excited to finally get your hands on EA's standalone strategy spin-off, Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge. You'll be able to fulfill your desires for meticulous action this week; the game is set to launch on XBLA this Wednesday and on PSN the day after for 800 ($10). You can temporarily satiate yourself by checking out the game's latest trailer after the jump.

However, before hastily acquiring the title, heed this warning: Commander's Challenge is infused with such a large dosage of Ric Flair that other items in your respective console's hard drive may get totally pumped and begin stylishly pummeling one another. Update: To be clear, the Commander's Challenge content does not require a Red Alert 3 disc and will be sold as a standalone product. We're sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Though Command & Conquer Red Alert 3's Uprising expansion landed on PCs months ago, it seems a port of at least some of the expansion's content is heading to consoles this fall. The "Commander's Challenge" <strike>DLC</strike> standalone game is set to run you $10 and offers "50 intense challenges against a set of nine different commanders, including 16-time world champion "Nature Boy" Ric Flair." Sound familiar? That's because the ESRB let slip the first news of the DLC a little over a month ago.

EA's official confirmation of the <strike>DLC</strike> game also speaks of "giant Soviet war bears" and an "army of psionic Japanese school girls," but that's all old hat for you Red Alert 3 players out there. Given the price and relative lateness of it, we're curious if anyone other than the most hardcore of RA3 fans will bother picking it up. Well, casual Red Alert 3 players?

Red Alert 3 'Commander's Challenge' costs $10, coming to 360 / PS3 this fall [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 12:40:00 EST. The ESRB site has a listing for a potential new installment in the Command & Conquer franchise destined for the Xbox 360 and PS3 called Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge. There's also a brief description for the title on the site, though it's a blurb that could fit almost any Command & Conquer game.

The 'Commander's Challenge' could pertain to the Uprising expansion for Red Alert 3 on the PC, which featured a game mode of the same name, so it wouldn't surprise us if this turned out to be a console port of that PC expansion. As long as they don't cut back on the Ric Flair, we're good.
EA's perpetual joke -- on you -- comes to an ironic end on April Fools' Day with the release of de-authorization tools for each of its 19 PC games with SecuROM copy protection (full list and download links after the break). If you've been working on that class action lawsuit against EA for bundling SecuROM with The Sims 2: IKEA Home Stuff, you can drop it now -- your flat-pack furniture can finally be moved to a new machine.

In the spirit of generosity, EA's giving you two options for managing your authorizations:

Option 1: Download and install yet another "tool" in order to scan your computer for EA's SecuROM games and find out how many computer authorizations you have (or don't have) left for each title.

Option 2: Cut to the chase and download the game-specific de-authorization tool you need.

The previous news about Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3's demo appearing in a "few weeks" might have startled some. The game will arrive in stores next Tuesday on March 24, leaving most people wondering whether or not they'll be able to test drive the demo before the game's release. Well, better tell those people not to fret any longer, because EA has confirmed via its official website that RA3's PSN demo will be available this Thursday.

The demo is a single-player campaign containing the game's cinematic opening, two missions (one from both the Soviet and Allied sides) and an interactive tutorial. So prep up the war room and get ready for some RTS battles.

[Via VG247]
Red Alert 3 demo coming this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 14:30:00 EST.
Since changing its tune about "skipping" a PS3 release of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, citing the platform's "exotic and tough" development climes, EA Los Angeles actually says its time learning the ins-and-outs of the architecture has been for the best.

Speaking to 1UP, producer -- and former games journo -- Greg Kasavin claims the PS3 version (the "Ultimate Edition") is the best-looking of the bunch, sporting better water effects and more detailed units. In addition, the "general color palette" is somehow improved. As we've previously reported, the PS3 release of Red Alert 3 is launching with free DLC maps and includes a whole bunch'a bonus material (making-of clips, bloopers and other vignettes).

The moral of this story: Developers can make PS3 perform some neat tricks if they just take the time to get to know it. Sometimes simply over a cup of coffee; other times while tackling one of those team-building obstacle courses together.

How much more Ultimate can EA's upcoming PS3 version of Red Alert 3 get? Although the Blu-ray disc will be bursting with extras, EA is planning on offering even more through DLC. Multiple map packs will be released through the PlayStation Store. But guess what? The first map pack will be absolutely free and will be available "right about the time the game comes out in March."

We thoroughly approve of EA's handling of the late release of Red Alert 3. Unlike other late ports (BioShock comes to mind), EA has made a clear effort to make the PS3 version stand out from the crowd. The addition of free DLC also gets a thumbs up.
Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition to launch with free DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 12:15:00 EST. Manic combat? Got it. Creepy girl? Yeah, it's in there too. Cheese? Only if you consider the acting, which, like Kraft, is the cheesiest. Watch the chaos -- and camp -- unfold as we wait for The Nature Boy to teach us all about defeat. Wooo!

The video offers an early look at the download-only expansion's collection of new units and cast members, as well as a campaign centered around Empire faction head case, Yuriko Omega. Uprising is currently gathering resources, and is expected to deploy to PCs sometime in March.

One of the things we've always loved about the Red Alert series is its campy FMV sequences. The other thing we love is tesla coils. Man, those things really mess dudes up.

Back to our original point: EA is once again pulling out all the stops for the expansion to Red Alert 3. Returning cast members include sex bombs Gemma Atkinson and Ivana Milicevic, who will reprise their Red Alert 3 roles. Among the new faces making an appearance in Uprising are Jamie Chung (from the upcoming train wreck Dragonball: Evolution), Malcolm McDowell (from Heroes and many, many other things), Jodi Lyn O'Keefe (from the TV series Prison Break), Holly Valance (from one of the best worst movies ever, DOA), and Ric Flair (retired professional wrestler). Yes, the Nature Boy himself will be making an appearance in the game. If he doesn't give someone his patented backhand chop, we're going to be severely disappointed.

Just a week ago we learned that a PS3 version of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 was ready for pre-order, but now we know a bit more about when to expect the RTS mainstay to appear on our console. That date is "late March," and though we're a bit disappointed to be given a relatively vague date, it's comforting to know that RA3 is only two months away -- and pimping quite a hefty amount of exclusive goodies.

It also looks like PS3 gamers will also experience a unique way to play RA3 as the latest press release from EA points to the inclusion of a "Command Stick 2.0 interface." Whatever could that mean? Perhaps a quick look at this PS3-focused trailer located above would give us a clue.

Red Alert 3 brings RTS warfare to PS3 this March originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Jan 2009 13:00:00 EST. Electronic Arts has officially announced Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition for PlayStation 3. The additional features setting this one -- due to arrive in March -- apart from the Xbox 360 and PC versions were revealed last week, when the title was listed for pre-order on the EA Store.

The only thing that we're a little curious about is this tidbit: "PlayStation 3 gamers will navigate ... via the Command Stick 2.0 interface." This is allegedly an "intuitive control system" designed for players of various skills. We've contacted EA to find out more and will update if we hear anything. Sounds like a fancy term for, "This RTS is playable on your controller, we promise!"

Update: EA answers our query after the break.
Continue reading Red Alert 3 'Ultimate Edition' marches to PS3 in ... The EA Store now has a listing for Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition for PS3. The publisher had previously announced that the PS3 version would utilize the "high-defness of Blu-ray" and now, comrades, we have a better idea of what that means.

The Ultimate Edition, which currently doesn't have a release date, features bloopers, new battleground maps, developer strategy videos and behind-the-scenes footage. The game's soundtrack will also be available, along with a "Unit Profiles video encyclopedia." The most titillating item on the disc is the "Girls of RA3" presented in full "HD Blu-ray with enhanced visuals." That's, like, twice the Blu-rays. Sadly, if the controls are anything like the Xbox 360 version, no amount of special videos will prevent you from begging for a keyboard and mouse.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Red Alert 3 'Ultimate Edition' coming to PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 18:56:00 EST. A few months ago, developers of the latest Command & Conquer game, revealed that the delayed PS3 version of the game would feature "really cool things" that take advantage of the "high-defness of Blu-Ray." Well, a listing on the EA Store reveals what those things will be.

Now dubbed the Ultimate Edition, the PS3 version will include a ton of new videos on the disc not found in previous versions. Find bloopers, behind the scenes, and developer strategy videos. There will also be brand new battleground maps. You'll be able to access the soundtrack from the game, and study with a built-in Unit Profiles video encyclopedia. To top it all, there's an exclusive HD version of a video feature, "Girls of RA3," which focuses on the women featured in the game.

With all this added content, the PS3 version of Red Alert indeed looks to be the ultimate version of the game. When this much content and effort is put into a port, we don't mind it coming a little later than on other platforms.

[Thanks, Andrew L.!]
PS3 to get 'Ultimate Edition' of Command & Conquer: Red Alert originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 14:30:00 EST. The Writers Guild of America has announced five nominees for best video game writing in 2008. This will be the Guild's second year giving out the award, with last year's nod going to Dead Head Fred. Hmm, well, this year's nominees are certainly an interesting group and are sure to generate some conversation about what constitutes good writing in a game ... provided said game was written by an eligible WGA member, that is.
Dead or Alive actress Holly Valance is trading in her sword (and vial of box office poison) for a pen and paper as journalist Brenda Snow in the recently announced Red Alert 3: Uprising. Valance will lend her live action camp to the upcoming expansion, which is earmarked for a digital-only release this March.

The Australian-born starlet describes her role in the game as "a camp, over-dramatised character," telling Eurogamer that "it was fun to go a little bit over the top." We're sure that's quite a change from DoA's Christie Allen. The four people who saw that movie tell us that she was the very picture of Hollywood grace.
Dead or Alive's Valance joins Red Alert 3: Uprising camp originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Jan 2009 22:05:00 EST. Don't count the filthy Reds out yet, as Electronic Arts has detailed Uprising, an upcoming expansion to Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. The add-on will send players back to the front lines with a new single-player campaign, new units and a greater quantity of live-action cutscenes, just in case the original's love affair with camp left you wanting more.

Uprising will also include a new mode, dubbed 'Commander's Challenge', which will allow players to test their strategic skills across 50 different stages with different rules and conditions. However, while Red Alert 3 is available for the Xbox 360 and a PS3 version should arrive ... someday ... only those playing on computers will be able to come away with bragging rights. Uprising will be a PC exclusive when it is released as a digital download in March.
Red Alert 3 expanding in March with 'Uprising' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 10:40:00 EST. European* Steam users can now join its American brethren in downloading Electronic Arts titles from Steam. The release schedule is mostly identical to that of the US and Canada, with Spore, Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack, Mass Effect, Need for Speed Undercover and FIFA Manager 2009 available now (notable exception: Warhammer Online) and Red Alert 3, Dead Space and Mirror's Edge coming in a few weeks.

... What's that, reader? What's the asterisk for? Turns out, the EA library is available on Steam only to "most of Europe," with the odd man out being the United Kingdom, according to both Eurogamer and independently verified by our mates at the Joystiq UK offices. We've extended an offer of Earl Grey and a scone to Valve for answers.

[Via BigDownload]
EA gets Steamed in Europe, except for UK originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Dec 2008 14:00:00 EST. Sister site Big Download contacted EA to find out if older PC games would become available, but the publisher wouldn't comment. In the rare and somewhat disturbing event that Tim Curry's illustrious presence doesn't result in an automatic purchase from you, you might want to test your real-time strateeh-gery in EA's Red Alert 3 demo. It's up on the Xbox Live Marketplace right now, says Major Nelson, who also lists "the game's cinematic opening, 1 campaign mission from both the Soviet and Allied campaigns, and an interactive tutorial" as part of the downloadable snippet.

But seriously, Tim Curry is in there. It seems the folks at EA have slapped on some shades and a gratuitous amount of SPF 15+ lotion in an attempt to brave the "exotic and tough" development climate of the PlayStation 3. Red Alert 3 producer David Silverman told VideoGamer that the alternate history, real-time strategy romp is back in development for Sony's system, after having been placed on hold in July.

Silverman assures that there are "definitely people working" on it (sea otters just weren't getting the job done) and that the PS3 version would benefit from the "the high-defness of Blu-Ray." Though his other comments seemed to imply a release as soon as December, EA confirmed to Eurogamer that there "are no plans for a PS3 release of Red Alert 3 anytime before Christmas." As for when exactly armchair generals can join Tim Curry, J.K. Simmons and the gang ... time will tell. While the system may deserve the "DelayStation" moniker that many give it, delays have had some genuinely good effects on games arriving on the challenging PS3. For example, Oblivion arrived on PS3 with extra content, and better stability. BioShock made the transition to PS3 with added content and exclusive DLC. Eternal Sonata also received additional content. The upcoming Alone in the Dark features an extra chapter and bonus PS3-exclusive features like "controls." The list goes on and on.

Red Alert 3 is now completed for Xbox 360 and PC. With these two projects out of the way, EA can now focus on a PS3 version, according to Videogamer.com. "If you're a PS3 owner and you don't own a PC and you don't have an Xbox 360 you don't have to write on your Christmas or Hanukkah list that you want to have an Xbox," David Silvermann said. "You can play Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, bide your time and you'll be very pleased. We're looking at doing some really cool things with the PS3 version. Since it is shipping later we're putting in a lot of cool content and really taking advantage of both the 1080p nature and the high-defness of Blu-Ray and also the fact that it can hold just so much more space."

It sounds like PS3 owners will get added content if they're truly taking advantage of Blu-ray. But let's hope that the devs at EA don't forget an oft-forgotten PS3 feature: the ability to plug in a mouse and keyboard.

[Thanks, Kspraydad!]
Red Alert 3 back on PS3, with 1080p and other 'really cool' PS3 features originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 11:05:00 EST. EA ran into two separate, yet equally important, serial key problems with the release of Red Alert 3. The first issue was that the serial key pinged back as being "invalid," while the other involved a missing digit in the 20-digit code. Here are the solutions from the EA site:

Invalid key issue: EA says the issue should be resolved by now. It involved a "small amount" of keys not being pre-loaded to the company's "backend." Coincidentally, the same place where customers probably felt like they were kicked.

Manual has 19 digits instead of 20: Either click here to contact customer service, or resolve the issue by trial and error. The only thing missing is the last digit, which is either "a number from 0 - 9 or a letter from A - Z." That leaves only 36 possibilities.

EA apologizes for the inconvenience. In Soviet Russia, inconvenience apologizes to EA!

[Thanks, Nut Man]
EA details fixes for Red Alert 3's broken serial keys originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 12:45:00 EST. There are a few things that are wrong about the trailer you just watched, if you haven't watched it yet we'll wait. The montage of female actors taking on roles in Red Alert 3 is criminally short with a disclaimer that players can witness more by purchasing the special edition of the game. Now, we're not saying it's criminally short because we just want to look at beautiful women but can these actors get a name card?

Quick blurry images of female actors and not one mentions them by name but the male actor portion of the video is complete with multiple shots of each actor, their credits and spends so much time showing off one actor we could have read their biography if included. We know Electronic Arts wants to hype up the anticipated sequel and the Collector's Edition but let's use a little tact, shall we? You can put down that syringe full of bear hormones - EA's got a much easier (and more affordable!) way of transforming yourself into that most noble of Mother Nature's creatures: simply don Korssar's Helm. You see, the "magical Kislevite helm is imbued with the spirit of the wild North and will magically transform the wearer into a ferocious bear."

There are some caveats however: your ability to live your life as a bear will be limited to the virtual confines of EA Mythic's Warhammer Online MMO (a deal breaker for some, to be sure) and those willing to confine their bearness to WAR will still need to preorder Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 on PC to access the magical helm. Preorder cross-promotion? Clever move, EA. Great to see publishers further incentivizing preorders ... but we're sure there's at least a handful of WAR-heads eager to play as a bear (a bear!) but uninterested in picking up Red Alert 3. In other words: don't throw away those bear hormones just yet.
Don't be bear naked in Warhammer Online; preorder Red Alert 3! originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 14:58:00 EST. Apparently convinced that it can no longer make loads of cash from a 13-year-old PC game, publisher EA has combined motivated marketing with measured magnanimity and released real-time strategy classic Command & Conquer: Red Alert for free. Where? Right at the bottom of this Red Alert 3 promotional page, which also dangles a free copy of Red Alert 2 in front of your nose. To get it, all you need to do is pre-order the game's third, deliciously cheesy installment.

And hey, if you're not sure what all this Conquer and Command stuff is, now's as good a time as any to shake Hitler by the hand and irrevocably wreck the timeline.

[Thanks, WiNG]
Download Red Alert for free (also legally) originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 17:30:00 EST. The thing about camp, i.e. the utter failure of seriousness, is that it's often difficult to judge whether it's intentional or not. The live-action cutscenes populating EA's (and Westwood's before that) Command & Conquer games have always had an aura of sincere goofiness about them, the source of which can be traced to somewhat respected actors playing all-too-silly roles all too seriously. But is this done on purpose, or did the director read about "tongue-in-cheek storytelling" in a review somewhere and just decide to go with that?

Either way, we're more than happy to see EA unveil a "star studded" cast (complete list after the break) for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, which includes George Takei, Tim Curry and J.K. Simmons, who plays the "anti-communist U.S. President." Simmons, who doesn't give a wooden nickel about your legacy, thinks video games "are one of the new frontiers for actors" and thought of the role as a "great opportunity for a character actor like me to have some fun."

Also allowed to open her mouth in the press release: Jenny McCarthy, who plays Allied commando Tanya. "What I realized is Red Alert 3 is not just a video game, it's absolutely an interactive movie. This is where the people at home get to move the story forward, and where seeing the plot thicken is a reward for a job well done." In case you weren't aware, "that's really cool."

Red Alert 3 is out on Xbox 360 and PC this fall in both regular and Premier editions.

Continue reading GC 2008: Red Alert 3 cast not likely to be taken seriously

GC 2008: Red Alert 3 cast not likely to be taken seriously originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 08:05:00 EST. When PS3 owners are left out of EA's Red Alert 3, they won't just be left wanting for the game's exotically tough real-time strategy. They'll also miss out on the video game acting debut of English actress/model/singer Gemma Atkinson, who will exchange her flimsy lingerie for something a little more formal as Allied communications officer Lt. Eva McKenna.

EA's PR machine tells us that Atkinson is best recognized for her work on the British soap Hollyoaks, as well as one of the region's most recognized models, though to be fair we're just going to have to take their word for it. The company also notes that she'll be on hand at the UK's M Festival gaming event this Friday, just make sure that when she talks you look into her eyes, and not upon her huge ... tracts of land.
British model Gemma Atkinson to suit up for Red Alert 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Aug 2008 06:00:00 EST. Apparently, developing games for the PlayStation 3 is roughly comparable to that one time we pushed a wheelbarrow full of lovely, scantily clad ladies up and down the beach -- "exotic and tough." Speaking to VideoGamer.com, EALA producer Amer Ajami used those words to elaborate on the decision to halt PS3 development of the Hitler-free real-time strategy romp, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.

"We actually announced a PS3 version early on but that was when we were still doing a lot of technical exploration of the architecture," explained Ajami. "PS3 is a very powerful system but as you guys know it's very exotic and tough to develop for and our engine really at the time wasn't designed for PS3." Couch commanders need not give up all hope, though, as Ajami notes EA "might go back and do something with the PS3 later on." Also just like that time we pushed a wheelbarrow full of lovely, scantily clad ladies up and down the beach.*

*We went back to apologize.
