During development, his conversations with religious employees at Irrational created a major shift for one of Infinite's characters.

"One of the characters in the game was highly altered based upon some very interesting conversations I had with people on the team who came from a very religious background, and I was able to understand they were kind of upset about something," Levine tells OPM.

"What I said to them was, 'I'm not going to change anything to get your approval, but I think I understand what you're saying and I think I can do something that's going to make the story better, based on what you said.' So I did that, and I'm grateful for them bringing in their perspective. The last thing I wanted to do was change something because it offends somebody, but the thing they pointed out was making it a lesser story."

Infinite offers an intriguing blend of religion, philosophy and science, as we discovered last year. The city of Columbia is presented as a real-world heaven and its founder is a God-like prophet. The entire game hinges on the philosophy of objectivism and it addresses the pseudo-science of "the ether" and resurrection. That leaves plenty to talk about, religious or not.

The religion conversation for Infinite mirrors one Levine remembers during the original BioShock's development. "I think that we had a similar conversation about Bioshock 1," Levine says. "It involves infanticide, I don't think there's a larger taboo in the world. There were people who were very nervous about that. We didn't have that because we thought it would be cool. My feeling was if it's not just there to be exploitative, if it's true to the story and you're telling something that you think is honest, then everything has a place."
BioShock Infinite character 'highly altered' after the religion talk originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Jan 2013 19:45:00 EST. Instead, there's lots of text, and some stuff about God and his homeboys. There is some neat functionality, though -- the searching was easy enough and navigating the Bible was a fairly painless experience here. Ultimately, we failed to find any reason why somebody would go this route over just buying a regular Bible. Besides, statistically speaking, you probably already have one in your home, even if you don't exactly know where it is right now.
Also: Who was the person who came up with these themes? If there's anything that's going to teach the kids to respect the bible, it's a version with virtual stains all over it, amirite?
After staging a protest/publicity stunt outside of E3 last week against upcoming EA game Dante's Inferno, the company is catching heat from Christian bloggers. InsideCatholic says on its website, "It's been clear for a while now that the entertainment industry views Christians on the whole as priggish, thin-skinned fun-killers," further wondering if "anyone at EA even read the Inferno."

Catholic Video Gamers fires an even more direct shot at EA's Dante's Inferno, saying, "Instead of engaging in a shamelessly anti-Christian stunt to promote your poor excuse of a product, maybe you ought to work on making this game, you know, something better than a blatant God of War rip-off." Wait, isn't Christianity all about forgiving? Oh well! Hopefully EA will think twice next time it decides to fake a protest and instead choose protesters without any major religious affiliation.

[Via GameSpot]
Christian bloggers protesting fake EA protest originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 13 Jun 2009 02:00:00 EST. Yesterday, the media suddenly and unexpectedly went temporarily insane following UK Metro's coverage of Faith Fighter, a year-old Flash title that pits various deities against one another in Immortal Kombat. The backlash to the title from religious leaders was about as feverish as you might expect -- in fact, following protests from the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the title's Italian developer Molleindustria pulled the game from its site.

The page where the site was once hosted now holds a message from the game's developers, blaming the Metro UK article for dredging up controversy and inciting protests over a game that has been "played by millions of players on the Internet" and "been exhibited in several artistic venues around the world." Of course, as Molleindustria was quick to point out, its pulling of the game is merely a symbolic gesture -- it's pretty tough to completely remove things from the internet.

[Via GamePolitics]
Faith Fighter shut down over Islamic protest originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 17:30:00 EST. Metro.co.uk has dug up some religious outrage over an aging, online game called Faith Fighter. The Flash-based title, released in January 2008, allows players to control various deities battling for ... "intolerance" of one another. In the "censored" version of the game, Muhammad's face is covered by a black circle. The Metro piece gives voice to certain representatives of various religions who are offended by the game, which does pre-load with this (perhaps sarcastic) disclaimer:

"This game is not intended to be offensive towards any religion in particular. Its aim is to push the gamers to reflect on how the religions and sacred representations are often instrumentally used to fuel or justify conflicts between nations and people ... If you feel that such a depiction [of Muhammad] would be offensive ... don't play the game at all."

Interestingly, Adult Swim's Bible Fight is essentially based on the same concept and has been playable since May 2, 2007. Granted, that game only picks on Judeo-Christian icons. Still, if we were a religious group expressing outrage (hint, hint), we'd at least direct our disgust at a mega-corporation (see The Church of England vs. Sony), you know, uh, to recoup some damages. Seriously, how do you expect little old Molleindustria.org to respond to the Faith Fighter backlash? Our best guess: a sequel starring new challenger Haile Selassie I.

[Via GamePolitics]
Year-old religious fighting game angering the religious originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 01:31:00 EST. It turns out that what Spore creator Will Wright refers to as "militant atheists" seem to be the most bent out of shape by the inclusion of a religion mechanic in his latest opus.

"I didn't expect to hit hot buttons on the atheist side as much; I expected it on the religious side," Wright said in an interview with Eurogamer. "What we had was a good, sizable group of players that we might call 'militant atheists,' and the rest of the players seemed very tolerant, including all of the religious players."

If anything, we'd expect Spore to be an equal-opportunity offender. After all, it implies that the biological material giving rise to its in-game life came from another world, but also has players acting in a "God" role to influence its evolution. "We didn't want to go too far down that path," Wright explained, adding, "We leave the whole creation of the universe question open." Open ... to debate, it seems.
What is new, however, is using the holy caricature in an advertisement for Easter services.

In a (successful [and adorable]) attempt to capitalize on the continued popularity of the Nintendo Wii, the Mission Bay Community Church in San Francisco has adorned their ads for holy week with the pint-sized Jesus Mii.

Christened with the tagline "Come and Follow Mii," and including a very confused bunny, the ad is surprisingly well put-together, and definitely gives the impression that the church knows their audience.
When we first embarked on our blogging careers, fresh-faced and full of hope, there were titles that we never expected to use. "Christina Aguilera's blasphemous Donkey Kong art," it's fair to say, was one such example.

Yet the world moves in mysterious ways, and so here we are, blogging about how pop songstress Christina Aguilera has hung the original version of the above artwork on the wall of her baby's nursery. That's right, folks: while Michael dangles his kids from balconies, and Britney has hers taken away, Christina surrounds her offspring with awesome Nintendo artwork. Titled "The Last Supper," this particular piece is by the artist Misha, and was created for the 2006 I Am 8-Bit Show.

Incidentally, if you want to be just like Christina -- and with an attitude to child-rearing like hers, who wouldn't harbor such aspirations? -- then great news! Prints of the above piece are available now at the Gallery1988 website for $75. That's ... actually tempting.
Christina Aguilera's blasphemous Donkey Kong art originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 22:30:00 EST. It's no secret that religious messageware Left Behind: Eternal Forces failed to find an audience amongst gamers (we think it's the whole "prayer is more powerful than guns" thing) so it's with a raised eyebrow and a quizzical look - and maybe even a Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor huhhh - that we greet news of Left Behind Games' "Million Game FREE Giveaway." It's simple: just stop by this website, make your order, and "increase [their] installed base of users to benefit future sales and expand distribution."

We should warn you though that it's not free free; there's a digital delivery or shipping surcharge of $5 or $6 respectively. Can't say we're filled with optimism for the plan, but apparently they know what they're doing ...

[Thanks, jc]
Left Behind: Eternal Forces now free (Hurry! The recent buzz may be about Halo, but the idea behind the campaign isn't new: we've reported on other examples of churches using the gaming angle, and many of us have seen or experienced it in our daily lives. This is one issue we figure will result in some pretty distinctly drawn lines, so it certainly makes for a perfect morning discussion topic -- how do you feel about games in the church? -- but we do encourage everyone to keep things respectful. Religion is a sensitive and often personal topic, after all, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss the implications of gaming and churches over our morning coffees.
Wii Warm Up: Gaming and (at?) church originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Oct 2007 09:00:00 EST. The article focuses on Protestant youth groups using the game to get young people through the door, then giving them the church spiel so that it'll be "hard for [the] teenagers to go to hell."

Critics say that allowing young people to play a game like Halo -- that they should not be able to buy on their own because it's rated M -- is actually a corroding influence. One critic put it succinctly when he said, "If you want to connect with young teenage boys and drag them into church, free alcohol and pornographic movies would do it."

As this blogger can clearly remember wanting to join the "troubled youth" program in elementary school because they got to play Nintendo and talk about their feelings while the rest of us were learning, it's pretty understandable how the allure of video games would get kids to do things they wouldn't necessarily want to do.

[Thanks Anonymous]
Religion of Halo helps churches find young congregants originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 07 Oct 2007 11:08:00 EST. You've got Bibleman, Biblegirl, and Cypher making this Superfriends-style team that thumps enemies. The OSU web site describes the game's inclusion as "just one more way OSU Tour can be a conduit in changing a soul forever."

While the group is affiliated with the Pentagon's America Supports You program, it's unclear just how much official support they have has from the military. The group does have the backing of "celebrities" including Stephen Baldwin, Evander Holyfield and, according to sources close to the group, God.
Religious group sending Left Behind game to troops in Iraq originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Aug 2007 12:04:00 EST. The Church had issues with Resistance's use of guns in the virtual cathedral and called the whole thing "highly irresponsible." Sony went ahead and finally issued a statement stating that they take the matter seriously: "Whilst we believe that we have sought and received all permissions necessary for the creation of the game, we will be contacting the Cathedral authorities in order to better understand their concerns in more detail."

So, that's that, until dialog begins between Sony and Church of England; however, while the two groups work out their issues, CNN's headline writer is having a field day with this story. The best example is the first story they ran about the Church's issues. The headline reads: Cathedral shootout game under fire. Who knew that Resistance was all about a cathedral shootout? Then their latest story had the headline: Church wants cash for 'sick' game. Funny thing is that the word "sick" never shows up once in a quote, it's merely a word supposedly used by the church to describe the situation, but there's no attribution. Get ready kids, the mainstream media might spin this story off its axis.
Sony vs. Church of England, meanwhile CNN has field day originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 15:59:00 EST. Later, he said that media talk about games creating violent killers is overblown. "Whenever you see those stories in the news, it's just for the sake of getting some news," Abanes said.

Living the Life fixture Dr. Linda Mintle was up next, talking about the potential addictiveness of video games. Her professional opinion? "Is it really physically addicting. Probably not. Do the chemicals rise and you get into it? Yes." Still, Mintle warned parents to watch out for children using games excessively as an escape from social problems. Both guests recommended parents play games with their children and warned of potential desensitizing effects of prolonged play -- good advice that thankfully avoids the sensationalist fearmongering of some other media outlets.

Of course, the program did touch on some explicitly Christian issues. Abanes said that Christian games are not yet "hip enough" for kids, but that Christian games could eventually serve as "ministry points" to connect with hard-to-reach children. Mintle warned that parents should consider whether they want their kids "dabbling in the occult" through games. So, in summary, keep your kids away from The Witcher and you should be OK.

Watch - Living the Life 4/18/07 (WMV Link)
Religious broadcaster takes balanced look at games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 15:27:00 EST. The Campaign to Defend the Constitution and the Christian Alliance for Progress are working to get the critically panned game pulled from Wal-mart shelves because of its "message of religious intolerance." Apparently some people think that gunning down the forces of the Antichrist, which include Muslims, rock stars and a sexy Secretary-General of the U.N., is un-Christian. Who knew?

To be fair, the game does let you convert non-believers instead of killing them, but it's hard to argue with the campaign's message that the game promotes "violent, divisive and hateful scenarios." Still, it seems a bit opportunistic to single out Wal-mart, which only sells the game in 200 of its 3,800 locations, while other equally culpable retailers get a free pass. Is an intolerant message enough to justify restricting a game's sale?
Political groups angry over Left Behind game originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Dec 2006 15:55:00 EST. During the game, you could acquire the siddhis of clairvoyance, levitation, invisibility, shrinking and strength. Your aim was to achieve pure consciousness by cleansing your six chakras in ascending order. But your current karma (depicted as a gray pall over your character's silhouette), if it covered any chakras, prevented you from cleansing them. So you had to remove karma by completing quests before you could purify yourself."

The only way to actually win the game would have been to complete it without harming or killing any other living creature. You could die and be reincarnated in a number of different forms like a human, a pig, a dog, or a worm -- but whatever form you came back as would limit the way in which you could interact with other characters in the game.

They had licensed the Unreal Warfare engine for use in the game, but eventually things began to fall apart because the graphics looked sub-par, and the producer had to face the facts that the development was beyond the team's ability to create.

Still, at least they tried to do something new that wasn't another standard shooter clone and featured some true innovation. It's refreshing when someone takes a risk every now and then and puts something truly unique on the map.
A non-violent first person Hindu shooter using the Unreal engine? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Oct 2006 15:58:00 EST. Ryan Stone of North Greenville College thinks so, and he points to Halo as a title on which Jesus mightearn a few frags. In his words, "I think He, being the almighty Creator, understands that He built into men thewant to be a hero. I want to save the world and fly through the galaxy shooting the bad guys and coming out unscathedwith a smoking pistol in each hand." We could not say it any better.

Stone's article derives from hisexperiences trying to set up a Halo tournament through his church in order to raise money for Relay for Life, which aids the American Cancer Society. However, some of the chuchmembers complained, citing not personal experience but "many articles from Focus on the Family and other highlyconservative publications" that associated Halo with non-Christian values. But Stone reminds readers howJesus "fought the conservative and religious people of the day, how he bucked the system."

Stonebelieves Jesus would have played some Halo, and probably rock at it, too. "He'd probably even beat me terribly andmake me look like I'd never played. I'd even hope for a little humorous religious smack talking." We agree thatmany M-rated games could be seen (and rightfully so) contrary to Christian ideals of morality (e.g. every Rockstar gamenot revolving around table tennis), but as a government soldier who fights to save humanity against an evil alien raceor two, Master Chief is a hero. So, to relay his final question, what would Jesus play?

[via GamePolitics]
Jesus the hardcore gamer originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Apr 2006 18:03:00 EST.
