The screenplay for Rovio's in-house Angry Birds film is being written by Jon Vitti, the Finnish developer has announced. A writer and producer, Vitti has worked on the screenplay for The Simpsons Movie and both 3D Alvin and the Chipmunks films, as well as two episodes of The Office, 25 episodes of The Simpsons and 20 episodes of late-80s Saturday Night Live.

Vitti's tenue on The Simpsons spanned 1990 through 2004, with his creative mark left on landmark episodes such as "When Flanders Failed," "Cape Feare" and "Mr. Plow," among others. As we learned last week, Angry Birds will be distributed by Sony Pictures and will arrive in theaters on July 1, 2016.

Rovio's intent on creating a feature film was made public late last year, when the studio tapped producers John Cohen and David Maisel from Despicable Me and Iron Man to lead the project. The Angry Birds movie is unique in that it's being completely done in-house - Rovio is funding and producing the film entirely on its own.

Rovio is entering the mobile publishing arena through its Rovio Stars initiative, which will cover the whole spectrum of publishing duties such as marketing and PR. Rovio will even consult with developers to help them optimize their games prior to launch.

Budding developers can already submit their mobile works to Rovio Stars through a handy application page, though all applicants must have a playable build to present. Screens, videos and other supplementary materials are also encouraged, as it provides Rovio with a better sense of the overall game.

As of now, Rovio Stars has recruited two games: Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage from Longdon-based Nitrome (based on the Flash version) and Tiny Thief from Barcelona indie outfit 5 Ants. The latter is due sometime this summer, while Icebreaker's mobile release is tentatively scheduled for "soon" on the official site.

The Rise and Swine update for Rovio's Bad Piggies adds 15 new levels and two fresh items, suction-cup tires and spring-loaded boxing gloves. The big, bad news in this update is the addition of a recording and sharing feature for iOS devices, allowing users to record moments on a whim and share to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The recording feature will come to Android later, Rovio says.

The Rise and Swine update also adds a new sandbox and the Road Hog Challenge. Rise and Swine is a free update, so get up and grab it now on your download service of choice. You know what they say - the early Bird gets Angry. We don't know what that has to do with Bad Piggies, but it's true regardless.

Rovio's latest financial report shows the company had a strong 2012, earning $195 million in revenue, with almost half of that coming from toy sales alone. The most recent Angry Birds game from Rovio is Angry Birds Friends, a free app on iOS and Android that integrates with Facebook.

Rovio attributes the growth to its new gaming franchises, such as Bad Piggies and Amazing Alex, and its consumer products, including all of those Angry Birds plushies, backpacks and clothes lining Target shelves. Consumer products in 2012 brought in three times the revenue as in 2011, accounting for 45 percent of Rovio's total.

Rovio games have been downloaded more than 1.7 billion times, and monthly active users across all platforms hit 263 million in December. Rovio notes that its main sources of revenue within gaming are paid titles, virtual goods and advertising.

Angry Birds Toons premiered in March and Rovio is working on an Angry Birds movie, using its own funds to make that thing happen outside of the standard studio system. Despicable Me producer John Cohen and Iron Man executive producer David Maisel are both on board for the film, which is set to launch in 2016.

DreamWorks' latest animated blockbuster, The Croods, is getting a tie-in iOS and Android game courtesy of Angry Birds developer Rovio. The game, due March 14, takes the film's prehistoric family and throws them into a caveman sim, apparently. You can hunt and gather, catch weird creatures, and cultivate your own little patch of the Paleolithic Age.

The Croods isn't Rovio's first movie tie-in, but it is the studio's first one outside of Angry Birds. Commercially speaking, that makes this game a whole different kettle of fish - or birds - or cave-birds. Maybe they should've gone with cave-birds.

Sure, it's a bit later than expected, but Rovio is preparing to finally unveil its Angry Birds cartoon series. Angry Birds Toons is set to premiere next month - "March 16/17" is listed in the trailer above. So what time is equidistant between March 16 and March 17? 12:01am? It'll debut sometime that weekend, the Angry Birds Twitter account says.

An Angry Birds movie is also in production, with a planned release of 2016. Currently the film project has two producers attached to oversee development: executive producer David Maisel, whose work includes Iron Man, and producer John Cohen, who is best known for his work on Despicable Me.

Curiouser, not one of the developers and publishers named on the previous list makes an appearance on the new roll call. A spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe confirmed to us the first list, sent out last week, was erroneous, and this new one is correct. There are no revisions for any other regions.

The new list removes a number of significant names, including Mojang (Minecraft), Rovio (Angry Birds), Frozenbyte, Criterion Games, and City Interactive. In their stead are some new noteworthy studios, such as CD Projekt, who've confirmed The Witcher 3 as a PS4 game. Also included are Bohemia Interactive, Deep Silver, Ninja Theory, IO Interactive, Codemasters, 2K Games, and Sumo Digital. The full list can be found after the break.

We've reached out to a number of studios for comment. Mojang's Daniel Kaplan reiterated to us the comments he gave to Gamasutra, saying his studio hasn't decided anything yet, and that the error is "confusion from Sony's side." Gamasutra's article also confirms Super Crate Box developer Vlambeer and Skulls of the Shogun creator 17-Bit, both included in the original list, as not currently working on anything for the PS4.

A spokesperson for Monsters (probably) Stole My Princess developer Mediatonic, included in the original list but not in the corrected one, told us he couldn't make any comment on his studio and PS4 development. Meanwhile, Sumo Digital's inclusion adds weight to the rumor the British studio is working on LittleBigPlanet 3, but for the PS4. When approached previously about LBP3, a studio representative told Joystiq, "No comment."

Update 1: A spokesperson for 505 Games tells us the Italian company is "definitely" planning to publish games on the PS4. 505 Games was in the original list of European/PAL PS4 developers and publishers, but not the revised list. The spokesperson noted the company's logo appears in the image showcasing PS4 partners, as shown during last week's event, as do many of the names in the revised list.

Update 2: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe informs us the list of European PS4 studios has been further revised. Two more studios are now present in the form of Criterion Games and Ghost Games (an EA studio) - both were in the original list of 53. That takes the tally of confirmed European studios up to 30.

Under his 'Experience' tab, Pulkkinen says he's also providing soundtracks for an iPad game and PSN game, both also unannounced.

While Pulkkinen's experience is diverse - he's composed soundtracks for several entries in the Angry Birds and Trine series - the majority of his PlayStation-based work has been for Housemarque. Pulkkinen provided the soundtracks for Super Stardust HD, Outland, Dead Nation, and Super Stardust Delta.

Earlier this month, Housemarque responded to a leak of concept art that included Dead Nation 2, as well as tie-ins to Superman and Walking Dead games. In an official statement, the studio said, "As for the artworks on display, they belong to a discarded batch and are not representative of projects we might or might not be working on."

Considering the series' crazy numbers on smaller screens, a million sales are maybe not surprising, but those games weren't going at $40 a pop, albeit ABT being a three-in-one release.

"It was certainly satisfying to see Angry Birds gameplay adapt so well to other platforms in 2012," said Petri Järvilehto, Executive Vice-president of Games at developer Rovio. "The features specific to the Wii U are very intriguing to us, so we're excited to release this version to fans."

Publisher Activision didn't say what those Wii U-specific features are, but given the games' iOS roots we'd be flappergasted if the game wasn't off-TV compatible.

While Angry Birds Trilogy encompasses Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio, some of the mobile levels didn't make the cut. Those are now available as DLC for an extra $5 (400 MSP).

The "Anger Management" DLC pack includes 130 levels from episodes like Ham 'O' Ween, Piglantis and more. It also introduces the orange bird, which can expand like a gigantic, feathery blowfish. He looks pretty uncomfortable in the trailer above, but in the life of a bird the brief flash of pain must make the conquest over pigs feel all the more satisfying.

Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on to produce, and Iron Man executive producer David Maisel is taking the same role in Rovio's feature film. The Angry Birds movie is set to hit theaters in summer 2016, and it's fully funded and produced by Rovio outside of the standard studio system.

"John's an exceptionally talented producer, and we're delighted to have him join the flock," says Mikael Hed, Rovio CEO. "With John's hands-on producer background and David's expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things."

Rovio held meetings with Hollywood advisers in 2010 and was rumored to have sought funding to the tune of $1.2 billion in 2011 to expand its entertainment offerings. As this film takes off, keep one thing in mind: Cohen is the guy who thought 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks was a good idea.

Angry Birds Star Wars just got a lot cooler, with Rovio adding 20 ice-ridden Hoth levels to the crossover game for free today. The update also sees Princess Leia and her three-way pink laser beams join in - you remember them from the films, right?

Developer Rovio notes Hoth is "just the beginning of the story from Episode V," indicating the game could receive at least one more (hopefully free) update based on The Empire Strikes Back. We know we're looking forward to some Angry Bird dismemberment.

Rovio catapulted Angry Birds Star Wars into hyper-availability today, the game now live on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 tablets, Kindle Fire, PC, and Mac. The developer promises over 80 levels of crossover larks, in which you guide the Rebel Birds through the trials and tribulations of deep-space physics as they flap their way towards, yup, the Pig Star.

Rovio also unveiled the above "cinematic" trailer, which offers an Angry Birds take on the iconic Mos Eisley Cantina scene from A New Hope. It's probably truer to the original than the digitally remastered re-release.

Titled Bad Piggies Best Egg Recipes, the app's regular price is $4.99. That's a significant leap from the promotional offer. However, compared to the $14.99 RRP of last year's physical version from which the app is adapted, it's a significant drop.

So, just in case you needed Angry Birds to invade some other part of your formerly Angry Birds-less culture, now there's an interactive cookbook. Although outside of sharing photos of your dishes on social media and setting an in-app egg timer, the interactivity is limited to pressing on the occasional illustration and seeing a brief animation. That's the same shtick early 90s CD-ROM games used, but at least it's better than just making a book digital.

The app contains 41 egg recipes, graded in difficulty, with simple step-by-step instructions. You may scoff, but when you consider how many people have downloaded the Angry Birds and Bad Piggies games, the potential success of this app really is no yolk. [You're in for a real beating over this line. - Ed.]

Angry Birds Star Wars is kicking into hyperdrive on November 8, Rovio today revealed. According to USA Today, the game is coming to iOS, Android, and Windows 8 PCs. Along with the above video, Lucasfilm and Rovio released the below promotional image.

According to Lucasfilm licensing and consumer products marketing VP Paul Southern, the above characters aren't just "Angry Birds dressed up as Star Wars characters," but they do have "personalities which are kind of similar" to their counterparts. We can already imagine the names: Luke Skysquawker, Chewpecker... actually, that's all we've got.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the game uses the physics of Angry Birds Space, but is set on recognizable locations from the Star Wars series. We may well learn more details after the Times Square reveal later today.

Update: Rovio lets us know the game is coming to iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC (including Windows 8), and Windows Phone.

The folks behind Angry Birds and Star Wars license holders have apparently been talking: Rovio has tweeted an image of what appears to be a rotund Angry Bird in classic Star Wars robes, saying "Who could this be?"

Additionally, an unknown official tumblr has surfaced with an animated version of the image that literally sheds a bit more light on the bird, but unfortunately not on the situation. We've reached out to Rovio for more information, but for now just sit back and think about the first time you ever saw The Empire Strikes Back. Remember all the weird space birds attacking the Millennium Falcon inside the worm's stomach? Yeah.

Update: Rovio has tweeted a link directly to the Angry Birds tumblr mentioned, confirming its legitimacy. We've replaced this article's original header image with the animated version for maximum lightsaber-ness.

Angry Birds is iOS gaming's juggernaut; even now, it regularly tops the App Store charts in both money earned and time played. Rovio, the Finnish company who created Angry Birds, put together dozens of mobile games before its first iOS release, and has seemingly hesitated to release anything else after it. The studio doesn't want to cannibalize its own success, so all we've seen from Rovio since Angry Birds' 2009 iOS release is a series of rebrands (including Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Space), and one licensed remake of a sandbox contraption game called Amazing Alex.

Bad Piggies, then, is the first original title we've seen from Rovio in years, but even it doesn't go too far off the multibillion-dollar reservation. It's a game set in the Angry Birds universe, that follows the green pigs and their goal of grabbing eggs rather than the frustrated fowl trying to demolish them. But instead of unleashing furious destruction by catapult, Bad Piggies asks the player to create modular vehicles that will cart the pigs across a level, reaching a map piece goal at the end.

Yet the victims seem oddly content about having their windows smashed and barbecues ruined. Wow, Rovio's next game is not an Angry Birds game - though, of course, it does take place within the deep Angry Birds Universe. Bad Piggies stars the hated pig spheres from Angry Birds, and features "all new, never-before-seen gameplay - and not a slingshot in sight!"

The teaser video doesn't show exactly what the new gameplay is, but we'll find out by September 27 at the latest, when Bad Piggies launches on iOS, Android, and Mac. Other versions coming afterward include Windows Phone, Windows 8 and PC. And though specific announcements haven't been made after those platforms, expect to see Bad Piggies in the plush toy, t-shirt, and fruit snack formats soon.

Liu will be filling the role of Creative Director at Rovio's Stockholm studio.

The announcement was made early this morning by Rovio Stockholm general manager Oskar Burman, who himself is also a Battlefield alumni, albeit a slightly different one.

During his five-year tenure at DICE, Liu filled various producer roles on Battlefield: Bad Company, Battlefield 1943, Medal of Honor and Battlefield 3. His work history also includes serving as Associate Producer on The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena before joining DICE.

Current speculation is that the green porcine will receive a spin-off game of some kind, but given that Rovio has to maintain the cash cow of the Angry Birds franchise, this could just boil down to simply more branding.

We flung a raven Rovio's way for a comment, but the company has yet to respond.

Desperately avoiding the use of the words "dookie" or "american idiot," Angry Birds developer Rovio announced a new Angry Birds Friends this morning featuring the band Green Day. Angry Birds Friends is the free Facebook version of the fowl franchise. The episode contains 10 new levels, with the members of band reimagined as some bad pigs (allegory goes here).

The crossover also includes Green Day's latest single "Oh Love," as well as "exclusive song 'Troublemaker.'" There's more Green Day episodes of Angry Birds Friends coming this fall.

Now if we could only get a Rihanna version of Angry Birds Friends with Chris Brown as all the pigs.

"Super excited to let you know I'm the new GM of Rovio Stockholm, opening up shop today," Burman announced. He left EA's "Easy Company" studio just last month, having served as the GM at Easy ahead of that.

Burman's certainly excited about the move, saying, "IMHO Rovio is one of the most exciting devs in the world, perfectly positioned for the future, [with] focus on digital, mobile, and thinking big." He added, "Have to admit I was also growing tired of creating violent games. From now on I'll only inflict violence on cartoon pigs."

Rovio says it's "delighted to welcome Oskar to the flock," and that he'll be working on "bringing Sweden's best talent together to work for the world's fastest growing and most innovative entertainment company." The Stockholm studio is "focused on supporting Rovio in both current and upcoming game projects," but no other info is given about what specifically the studio is working on.
