Looking to bolster your games collection on your Windows Phone on the cheap? Today, Microsoft has <a href="http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_phone/b/windowsphone/archive/2011/08/10/they-re-classics-they-re-new-from-xbox-live-and-they-re-free.aspx">announced</a> that ad-supported versions of <em>Minesweeper </em>and <em>Sudoku </em>are available to download, free of charge, right now on your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/windows-phone-7">Windows Phone 7</a> device. There's only one stipulation: you've gotta be a US resident.<br />
<br />
Both titles feature Achievements and multiple modes of play -- in <em>Sudoku</em>, you've got Classic or Lightning mode, while <em>Minesweeper</em> boasts Classic and Speed modes. You can download each by following the links below.<br />

For just 200 DSi Points (that's $2), a whole world of digital sudoku can be yours -- plus DSi homebrew capabilities! The hacking troupe known as "Team Twiizers" has found a hole in EA's <em>Sudoku</em> DSiWare game -- exposed using a false save file -- through which homebrew games and applications can be run on a DSi without a flashcart. Notably, this exploit can <em>not</em> be used to play pirated games or applications, but only enables true homebrew software. <br />
<br />
Perhaps most exciting for homebrew developers, this <em>breakthrough</em> brings the DSi's hardware upgrades (over the original DS) into play. "In DSi mode, the DSi SD card slot is accessible, the whole 16MB RAM is available, and the CPU is clocked 2x higher than DS-mode," Twiizers notes in on post on <a href="http://hackmii.com/2011/01/sudokuhax-release/">HackMii</a>.<br />
<br />
As of publishing, [see below] <strike>the <em>Sudoku</em> game is still available in the North American DSiWare store</strike>, but has already been removed in Europe. At the very least, it would be an excuse to throw away that ratty copy of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Snakes-Sudoku-Francis-Heaney/dp/1402743432/"><em>Snakes on a Sudoku</em></a>, right?<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Looks like Nintendo has already removed the game from its DSiWare store in North America as well. Sorry homebrewers!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/28/sudoku-dsiware-exploit-enables-homebrew-on-dsi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sudoku DSiWare exploit enables homebrew on DSi [update: and it's gone!]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/28/sudoku-dsiware-exploit-enables-homebrew-on-dsi/">Sudoku DSiWare exploit enables homebrew on DSi [update: and it's gone!]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 13:30:00 EST. Nintendo's been on quite the roll recently, providing plenty of content in its weekly offerings -- and today is no different. There are ten new titles to check out, including high-profile downloads such as <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/castlevania-the-adventure-rebirth">Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/oregon-trail">Oregon Trail</a> </em>and -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/21/report-mario-kart-pilotwings-and-smash-bros-coming-to-virtual/">finally!</a> -- <em>Pilotwings</em> on the Virtual Console. Head past the break to check out the full list.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/28/nintendoware-weekly-castlevania-rebirth-pilotwings-oregon-tra/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NintendoWare Weekly: Castlevania ReBirth, Pilotwings, Oregon Trail</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/28/nintendoware-weekly-castlevania-rebirth-pilotwings-oregon-tra/">NintendoWare Weekly: Castlevania ReBirth, Pilotwings, Oregon Trail</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Dec 2009 11:00:00 EST. If you thought <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/nintendoware-weekly-bit-trip-void-super-mario-kart-a-boy-and/#continued">last week's NintendoWare Weekly update</a> was huge, well ... you'll probably think the same thing about this week's update! That's mostly because Nintendo provides quite the overweight offering this time, with a total of ten new titles available for your post-Thanksgiving download. Loosen that belt and make some room for more by heading past the break for the full list of this week's releases.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/30/nintendoware-weekly-tales-of-monkey-island-bookworm-the-comba/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NintendoWare Weekly: Tales of Monkey Island, Bookworm, The Combatribes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/30/nintendoware-weekly-tales-of-monkey-island-bookworm-the-comba/">NintendoWare Weekly: Tales of Monkey Island, Bookworm, The Combatribes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. We suppose it's timely, given that a new <em>Street Fighter</em> game is in the news now, but ... it's still <em>Fighting Street</em>. The continuation of <em>Tales of Monkey Island</em> should be a bit more welcome, as should the DSiWare <em>Bomberman Blitz</em>. <br />
<br />
<em>Manic Monkey Mayhem</em> on WiiWare sounds like it could be great (monkeys throw bananas to knock each other off of platforms), with online play -- but, of course, we always feel guarded about unknown WiiWare games. But <em>monkeys</em>! We look forward to hearing impressions. <br />
<br />
As for the rest, <em>Uno</em> sounds like <em>Uno</em> and <em>SUDOKU</em> sounds like sudoku, but louder.

Today's highlight is no doubt <span style="font-style: italic;">Revenge of Shinobi</span>, the first <em>Shinobi</em> game on the Sega Genesis. What's funny about this is that the <span style="font-style: italic;">third</span> game in the series on that console, <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/vc-monday-madness-video-wrap-up-8-20-07/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master</span></a>, was released on the Wii way back in 2007. Two-thousand-and-<span style="font-style: italic;">freaking-seven</span>, people! How crazy is that? More after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/nintendoware-weekly-picturebook-games-revenge-of-shinobi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NintendoWare Weekly: Picturebook Games, Revenge of Shinobi</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/nintendoware-weekly-picturebook-games-revenge-of-shinobi/">NintendoWare Weekly: Picturebook Games, Revenge of Shinobi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 10:48:00 EST. You know what, I'm just gonna say it: I love <em>Drop7</em>. I've been evangelizing the game since I downloaded the free "Lite" version two weeks ago -- and subsequently bought the full version for $2.99 -- trying desperately to explain the game's "<em>Tetris</em> meets <em>Sudoku</em>" concept to anyone who'll listen. <br /><br />Forget about your <em>Super Monkey Balls</em> and <em>Metal Gear Solid Touches</em> -- <em>Drop7</em> feels built from the ground up with the iPhone (at least sort of) in mind, and easily warrants the same praise that games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/iphone-it-in-rolando/"><em>Rolando</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/09/iphone-it-in-word-fu/"><em>Word Fu</em></a> have earned. It's easy to jump into a game and play for as little (or as long) as you'd like, just the way I like my phone-based gaming.<br /><br /> Oh, and before you jump all over me for not playing the game earlier, I'm quite aware that the game came out all the way back in late January, which is like <em>ten thousand </em>internet years. It doesn't matter though, because <em>Drop7</em> is timeless.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/drop7/">Drop7</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/drop7/#2154866"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/img_0324_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/drop7/#2154865"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/img_0325_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/drop7/#2154864"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/img_0326_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/drop7/#2154863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/img_0323_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/21/iphone-it-in-drop7/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone It In: Drop7</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/21/iphone-it-in-drop7/">iPhone It In: Drop7</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 10:59:00 EST. Nintendo has cracked open the vault of upcoming titles due out later this year, and there's quite a few new titles mentioned for DSiWare. A few we already knew about (<a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/gameloft-and-mattel-team-up-to-bring-uno-to-wiiware/">Gameloft's <em>Uno</em></a> and <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/05/27/hudson-bringing-sudoku-to-dsiware-this-summer/">Hudson's Sudoku games</a> were expected), but <em>Prehistorik Man</em>, published by Interplay, is <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X7ap3t7RMw&amp;feature=PlayList&amp;p=7032778C6B294229&amp;index=0">an old SNES game</a> (so Virtual Console we guess?), and there's a working title for a DSiWare game called <span style="font-style: italic;">Six in One Translator</span>. Could you be translating between six different languages on your DSi sometime later this year? There are also quite a few "Domo" games planned -- we're guessing these are games that have to do with the popular Japanese Domo character, though<br /><br />The full list of publishers, games, and expected release dates is after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/new-dsiware-revealed-prehistorik-man-six-in-one-translator/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New DSiware revealed: Prehistorik Man, Six in One Translator</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/new-dsiware-revealed-prehistorik-man-six-in-one-translator/">New DSiware revealed: Prehistorik Man, Six in One Translator</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Jun 2009 14:45:00 EST. The games will each feature puzzles hand crafted by Nikoli, the Japanese puzzle company. <br /><br />It's unclear exactly what the differences are between the two titles, though the press release does mention that <em>Sudoku Master</em> features "a class certification mode, which tests advanced players' puzzle solving abilities and rates their skill levels." Sure, <em>Sudoku</em>'s getting a little bit tired nowadays, but with the puzzles coming to DSi there's now literally no way to escape them. May as well just give in.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/27/hudson-bringing-sudoku-to-dsiware-this-summer/">Hudson bringing Sudoku to DSiWare this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 May 2009 22:00:00 EST. With game applications taking up nearly half the list (12 of 25), the rankings for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/iphone">iPhone</a> apps released this week by internet information company <a href="http://www.comscore.com">comScore</a> may be aimed at advertisers, but tells us a ton about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/sxsw-2009-iphone-the-new-gaming-platform/">the newest gaming platform</a>. For instance, of the 15 million iPhone users in the US, 32 percent (nearly one in every three) have installed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/the-joystiq-free-game-club-tap-tap-revenge/"><em>Tap Tap Revenge</em></a>, making it the most popular application by an <em>ice cold</em> five percent. <br /><br />Furthermore, of the 12 game applications listed, 75 percent of them were developed by small startup companies or, in one case, a single individual. Actually, aside from <em>Pac-Man</em>, <em>Hangman</em>, <em>Sudoku</em>, and a version of <em>Solitaire</em>, all the games are original IP, with number one title <em>Tap Tap Revenge</em> serving as the prime example. There's something hilarious about playing retro sports games, with their <em>archaic button controls,</em> on the Wii. Maybe it's just us.<br /><br />The other game is one of the many entries in Falcom's <a href="http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/xanadu/xanadu.htm"><em>Dragon Slayer </em>series</a>, <em>Legend of Xanadu</em>. It's a "ram into enemies" action-RPG like <em>Ys</em> -- and a side-scrolling RPG like <em>Ys III.</em><br />

WiiWare in Japan, like in the US, has a sudoku game, though it is a <em>different</em> one. <em>@Simple Series Vol. 2 THE Number Place Neo</em> is part of the super-budget WiiWare version of D3's famous <em>Simple</em> series. Milestone, developers of shooters like <em>Karous</em> and <em>Chaos Field</em>, contribute a poker-based falling-block puzzle game. But the most exciting release is no doubt <em>Kurohige Kiki Ippatsu Wii,</em> Takara Tomy's adaptation of the <em>Pop-up Pirate</em> toy that Chris <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/beloved-toy-of-our-youths-coming-to-wiiware/">raved about</a>.<br />

These, however, differ from other such products in one important way: the puzzles are <em>large.</em> All three collections feature larger playing fields than usual, which leads to things like the nightmarish multi-screen picross puzzle seen in the screenshot here.<br /><br />And speaking of nightmarish, coulrophobes will be <em>terrified</em> to see the mascot for this series, a clown drawn by <em>Famitsu</em> artist <a href="http://www.susumumatsushita.com/library/index.php">Susumu Matsushita</a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/1213141_1407.html">Read</a> - <em>Crossword Mate</em><br /><a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/1213146_1407.html">Read</a> - <em>Nanpure Mate<br /></em><a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/1213138_1407.html">Read</a> - <em>Oekaki Mate</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/compile-heart-goes-puzzle-crazy/">Compile Heart goes puzzle crazy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 11:15:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SuDoKu/">Sudoku</a> </em>is one of those cultural phenomena we just don't pretend to <em>get</em>. The seemingly innocuous brain teasers seemed to crop up overnight, reducing commuters the world over into savoring number crunchers. The casual puzzles have found a welcome home in books, newspapers, and even in video games, and publisher Merscom has now announced plans to bring the logic challenges to XBLA as well with <em>Buku Sudoku</em>.<br /><br />The game, a conversion of Merscom's <a href="http://www.merscom.com/arcade/game.php?prodid=merscomsudoku">PC title of the same name</a>, will boast such enhancements as "a very fast entry method" using the Xbox 360's thumb sticks, as well as support for multiplayer over Xbox Live. <em>Buku Sudoku</em> will also sport HD resolution, which to be honest seems wasted on a game about filling out numbers on a grid. That said, if Xbox Live Arcade can manage to make hardcore gamers fall in love with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/UNO/"><em>UNO</em></a>, don't be surprised if your <em>Halo </em>buddies have to cut out early in order to throw down with some serious number counting when <em>Buku Sudoku</em> is eventually released.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/merscom-to-bring-sudoku-puzzles-to-xbla/">Merscom to bring sudoku puzzles to XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 06:00:00 EST. TDK Core's <em>DS Puzzler Nanpure Fan &amp; Oekaki Logic Wi-Fi Taiou </em>(<em>DS Puzzler Sudoku and Picture Logic Wi-Fi Interaction)</em> is a pretty simple game design: <em>a bunch of sudoku and picross-type puzzles.</em> And that's fine! People like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/picross/">picross</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sudoku/">sudoku</a>.<br /><br />But <em>DS Puzzler</em> goes beyond the normal self-motivated challenge of these puzzle games by including online rankings for both. We're familiar with this kind of thing in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/ds-fanboy-review-picross-ds/">picross</a> setting, but we <em>certainly</em> wouldn't want anyone to see how, uh, <em>great</em> we are at sudoku. And we're pretty sure we'd embarrass ourselves with these more complicated, colorful picross puzzles too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/13/fail-at-puzzles-show-the-world/">Fail at puzzles, show the world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Nov 2007 13:10:00 EST. We don't know what caused our feelings about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/12/sudoku-for-the-wii/">sudoku</a> to change from "meh" to total enthusiasm, but our change of heart coincided almost exactly with the first time we learned about a sudoku game on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NES/">NES</a>. Weird how that works out, right?<br /><br />Only 90 grey-cartridge copies and five gold-cartridge copies of Al Bailey's homebrew NES <em>Sudoku</em> have been made, and all of the remaining copies will be at this weekend's <a href="http://www.cgexpo.com/">Classic Gaming Expo</a> in Las Vegas, where we would also like to be. The single unsold gold cartridge is going to be auctioned for charity, to someone who has a lot more money for NES games than we do.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2007/07/24/sudoku-remade-for-the-nes/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/25/we-have-spontaneously-decided-that-sudoku-is-awesome/">We have spontaneously decided that sudoku is awesome</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Jul 2007 10:40:00 EST. Nintendo never got around to announcing this new game at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e307">E3</a>: a crossword game tentatively called <em>Nintendo Crossword.</em> For <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sudoku">sudoku</a> fans, a "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossword">crossword puzzle</a>" is a grid puzzle much like sudoku, but with letters instead of numbers, and completely different rules in place of the sudoku rules.<br /><br />Nintendo's presentation is much more staid than that of its competition, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/28/ny-times-crossword-puzzler-lines-up-some-screens/">New York Times Crosswords</a>, </em>passing over odd color schemes and Comic Sans-alikes for a traditional newspaper-like display. It's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_People">boxy, but good</a>.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/e307-nintendo-crossword-kind-of-announced/">E307: Nintendo Crossword kind of announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 10:40:00 EST. Even if it is just <em>another</em> Sudoku game. For us, it doesn't matter much, as our backlog just grows larger by the week, so we're already knee-deep in games that need to be played.<br /><br />What about you? <br />Sometimes, a package doesn't really tell you what you need to know about a game -- and it can actually be misleading or off-putting. As tragic as the thought is, the box art for <em>Brain Buster Puzzle Pak</em> falls into that category. Up close, the art is rough, jagged, and looks like it might have been printed in someone's home office.<br /><br />So is the game also unfortunately bad? Not even a bit -- Agetec's <em>Brain Buster Puzzle Pak</em> lives up to its name and is packed, as promised, with an array of brain-busting puzzles. The puzzle standard, sudoku, is present, but BBPP brings in four other games as well, all presented by a professor who in no way resembles Dr. Kawashima. By that, we mean he actually has a <span style="font-style: italic;">body</span>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/ds-fanboy-review-brain-buster-puzzle-pak/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DS Fanboy Review: Brain Buster Puzzle Pak</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/ds-fanboy-review-brain-buster-puzzle-pak/">DS Fanboy Review: Brain Buster Puzzle Pak</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Jun 2007 09:55:00 EST. The grid-based logic puzzle has all the ingredients of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/zendoku-set-to-make-us-care-about-sudoku-again/">another hit</a> -- easy to learn, straightforward gameplay, and simple rules. Even though it doesn't have the broad appeal of Sudoku, Kaji says it could easily earn the title "son of <em>Sudoku</em>".<br /><br />In <em>Slitherlink</em> you stare at a grid made up of dots and the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3 scattered about. Your goal is to join the dots around the numbers using the same number of lines as the number they are next to. The line snakes around the grid like ... a snake. Hudson published <em>Puzzle Series Vol. 5: Slitherlink</em> in Japan earlier this year and the game has received high marks from reviewers, including a <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=74357">10/10 from Eurogamer</a>.<br /><br />It isn't known if <em>Slitherlink DS</em> will make its way out of Japan, but thanks to the world wide web and the humans that populate it, a <em>Slitherlink</em>-inspired game has been crafted in Flash, cleverly titled <em><a href="http://www.vgreality.com/alphaex/flashloader.php?f=flash/slither_demo_v13c.swf&amp;w=430&amp;h=510&amp;n=Slither%20Link">Slither Link</a></em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/father-of-sudoku-says-slitherlink-is-the-next-big-thing/">Father of Sudoku says Slitherlink is the next big thing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 18:56:00 EST. The point is, we're all about putting a little action in the middle of our puzzles, so long as it doesn't slow down the act of puzzling. Pretty pictures, neat backgrounds, weird SRPG motifs ... we're okay with these elements. But we're not quite sure about <em>Zendoku</em>. While we're in favor of the idea, the execution leaves us a little, well, <em>puzzled</em>. In the <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/ffv">short video</a> after the jump, we get a chance to check out the mechanics in action, and it seems like everything just takes a long time -- and that takes away from our actual purpose in playing. Maybe it's just us, though. Give it a look and tell us what you think.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/friday-video-checking-out-zendoku/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Friday Video: Checking out Zendoku</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/friday-video-checking-out-zendoku/">Friday Video: Checking out Zendoku</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 19:00:00 EST. It kind of feels like <em>Minesweeper </em>at times but kind of feels like <em>Suduko</em> at other times. As you can see from the screenshots below, you are given a grid with numbers on the outside edge. You have to figure out from the numbers what pattern of squares should be filled in on the grid, with mistakes costing you big penalties on your overall time score. Once you've completed the puzzle, you reveal a picture in the pattern on the grid. The larger the grid, the more complex the picture.<br /><br />You can also make your own puzzles easily; all you have to do is draw an image and the game will turn it into a puzzle for you. If you want more control, you can also create a puzzle by hand. You can even trade puzzles with friends over the wireless connection and Nintendo promises additional puzzles will be made available for download for free, which is always a nice plus.<br /><br />The game was a lot of fun and the ability to draw your own puzzles was a nice touch. Puzzle fans, look for this game when it comes out on July 30th.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/picross/">Picross</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/picross/#252628"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/picross_050907_14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/picross/#252629"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/picross_050907_15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/picross/#252630"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/picross_050907_16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/picross/#252631"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/picross_050907_19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/picross/#252622"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/picross_050907_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/nintendo-media-summit-picross-hands-on-ds/">Nintendo Media Summit: Picross hands-on (DS)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 May 2007 17:40:00 EST. Dress them up with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/10/toon-doku-threatens-to-break-our-brains/">mini-cakes</a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/09/everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-zendoku/">martial arts</a> if you want to, but it's getting harder and harder for these games to keep us interested with each passing week.<br /><br />Leave it to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/homebrew">homebrew</a> superstar Mollusk to add some life to the number puzzle. As its name implies, <em>Skinz Sudoku</em> allows you to customize almost every visual detail of its interface. Dropping a PNG template into the game's included PAFS.bat file spits out a unique <em>Skinz Sudoku</em> ROM with your graphics. Jump past the post break for some examples of the different themes.<br /><br />Think of the possibilities! Design your screens with lightning bolts! Replace all of the numbers with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon">Pok&eacute;mon</a> heads! Scan in a photo of your secret crush with a word balloon that says, "I luv u! Plz date me!" Just don't let anyone catch you locking lips with your DS after staring into his or her eyes for too long. Seriously guys, that's weird.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/give-the-sudoku-grid-a-new-look/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Give the Sudoku grid a new look</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/give-the-sudoku-grid-a-new-look/">Give the Sudoku grid a new look</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 17:00:00 EST. <p>Think <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudoku">sudoku</a> is for chumps? Well, <em>Zendoku</em> is trying to change all of that. The game takes the classic numbers-on-a-grid gameplay of sudoku and spices it up with ninjas (and other generic, stereotypical characters)! <em>Zendoku</em> is trying to do to sudoku what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/puzzlequest"><em>Puzzle Quest</em></a> did to <em>Bejeweled</em>. Is this action-oriented approach to sudoku necessary? Or does it add too many distracting elements in what should be a much simpler game?</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/zendoku-offers-sudoku-battle-action/">Zendoku offers Sudoku battle action</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Apr 2007 20:30:00 EST. We know that, conceptually, you can use any nine <a href="javascript:void(0);/*1176226699375*/">symbols</a> instead of numbers to play the game, but we never wanted to try that because it sounds pretty confusing. It's a lot easier to glance at a line and see that 4 and 9 are missing than it is to see that <em>walrus</em> is missing.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/majesco">Majesco</a>'s <em>Toon-Doku</em>, then, is a puzzle <em>weapon</em> that can be used to melt our unfortunate psyches. Not only does it have picture-based sudoku, where you line up rows, columns, and squares of <em>little dessert icons,</em> but it has custom "distractors" that block the screen with a drawing of your choice. We feel our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brainage">Brain Age</a> approaching infinity.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/10/toon-doku-threatens-to-break-our-brains/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toon-Doku threatens to break our brains</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/10/toon-doku-threatens-to-break-our-brains/">Toon-Doku threatens to break our brains</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 14:00:00 EST. We don't blame you; on the face, it certainly seems like an unusual combination, but Pocket Gamer's interview with <em>Zendoku</em> creator Martin Hollis reveals the inspiration behind this unusual puzzler, and much more as well. So what's the story? It's simple, really. "Sudoku needed some ninjas," Hollis said. Frankly, what <em>doesn't</em> need a ninja or six?<br /><br />Now that the question of inspiration is out of the way, the next logical question is: how does one mix puzzles and action? In <em>Zendoku</em> -- which uses symbols, not numbers -- the puzzle board, if you will, is the field of combat. Completing a row, section, or column initiates an attack -- and those attacks are played out in microgames. It all sounds good on paper, but we'll have to give it a try to see if it's any fun in action. It may be promising, but sometimes you just want to finish the puzzle, you know?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/09/everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-zendoku/">Everything you ever wanted to know about Zendoku</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Apr 2007 16:45:00 EST. <div align="left">We'll admit it -- when we first saw Sudoku in our local paper, we were a little taken with the simple logic puzzle. When we found a decent touch-screen version included with our copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/30/u-s-brain-training-to-begin-this-april-and-may/"><em>Brain Age</em></a>, we thought it was a nice little bonus. Now, however, when <a href="http://www.ubi.com/US/Games/Info.aspx?pId=4350">it</a> <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/ds/puzzle/sudokugridmaster/">seems</a> <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Essential-Sudoku-DS-Nintendo/dp/B000G3JWVY">everybody</a> <a href="http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/681/681060p1.html">and</a> <a href="http://www.gamecrazy.com/games/game.aspx?id=11486">their</a> <a href="http://www.n-philes.com/database.php?id=2286">brother</a> is trying to cash in with a video game version of the little time waster, we find it harder and harder to care about those little grids of numbers.<br /></div>
<br />That was until we stumbled across the website for <a href="http://www.zendokugame.com">Zendoku</a>, an Eidos-produced version of the familiar puzzle for the DS. Zendoku spices up the basic Sudoku gameplay with an RPG-style quest-mode, a two-player wireless battle mode (complete with blockable attacks) and super-deformed martial arts stereotype characters. Sounds a bit like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puzzle_Fighter"><em>Super Puzzle Fighter II: Turbo</em></a> to us, and it looks like it has the same potential to spice up an overdone puzzle genre. We'll let you know if it does when it comes out June 1.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/zendoku-set-to-make-us-care-about-sudoku-again/">Zendoku set to make us care about Sudoku again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 06:30:00 EST. This is an easy choice for the DS -- that's why there's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sudoku">so much</a> of it -- but we're uncertain about the potential fun of Wii-based sudoku. Maybe as part of something else, but as its own game ... we'll see. Not sure how it'll be played out? Never fear, developer Hudson Soft prepared a <a href="http://www.hudson.co.jp/wii/sudoku/howto/howto.html">movie</a> that should serve to answer all those questions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/12/sudoku-for-the-wii/">Sudoku ... for the Wii?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 18:13:00 EST. <p>We're back with our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/importrelease">weekly</a> import release list, After the lack of import games last week, we strike back this week with a slightly less anemic import game release week. Since your PSP plays import games, you might want to pay attention! Onto the week's releases ....</p>

Maybe some of us are just a little slower at solving them, but apparently there is some gaping void of <em>demand</em> for brain-crunching number puzzles. If you've already devoured all available Sudoku like a ravenous beast and are desperate for any puzzle fix, one <a href="http://palib.info/forum/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?forum=9&amp;post_id=13387#forumpost13387">homebrew artist</a> whipped up a fresh batch over the holidays just for you. Yeah, between pinched cheeks and presents, this guy programmed a (mostly) working homebrew Sudoku game. And here we thought we were doing well not to just pass out on the sofa on our off days. Maybe we need to aim a little higher. That <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/02/diy-make-your-own-phoenix-wright-shirt/">t-shirt project</a> sounds a little easier, though. <br /><br />Forgive the digression. <em>DSudoku</em>, by Crescent Moon, the homebrew solution for your raging number puzzle needs.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/02/because-there-can-never-be-enough-sudoku/">Because there can never be enough Sudoku</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Jan 2007 18:30:00 EST. Sudoku</em>. These aren't exactly huge blips on the radar, but it's good to see Sony adding content, even if it's a sporadic effort.<br /><br />The updated version of <em>Lemmings</em>, trying players' leadership skills across 50+ levels, is being offered for <strike>$2.99</strike> $5.99; the basic <em>Sudoku</em> package tops that. It's free. Additional puzzle packs (bundled by difficulty) are $2.99 a pop. The number of puzzles per pack has not yet been verified, but Sony hopes to offer roughly 1,000 grid variations in all.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/08/lemmings-sudoku-appear-on-ps3-store/">Lemmings &amp; Sudoku appear on PS3 store</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Dec 2006 23:15:00 EST. Other details on the title have yet to be revealed, however the press release does confirm wireless multiplayer without elaborating whether said support will include Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connect service or not.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/27/zoonami-announces-zendoku-for-the-ds/">Zoonami announces Zendoku for the DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Oct 2006 10:55:00 EST. We're not. President Bush turns a whole sixty years old tomorrow, and Nintendo of America felt fit to send him a birthday package of their own creation: a white DS Lite, a copy of <em>Brain Age: Train Your Brain For Minutes A Day</em>, and a nice congratulatory letter (read it after the break).<br /><br />Aside from being absolutely ridiculous (guy at Nintendo who thought to do this, I love you), one must wonder if President Bush will receive the package personally and actually attempt to play a round. Just think! With rigorous training, President Bush may usher in a new era of world peace! Sudoku transcends all cultural barriers.<br /><br />Marketing genius, Nintendo. I wonder what his initial Brain Age would be... (watches as the commenters rush to post the largest number they know)<br /><br />Once again, the full letter from Nintendo after the break.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=3498">GoNintendo</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/05/nintendo-sends-president-bush-ds-lite-brain-age/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo sends President Bush DS Lite, Brain Age</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/05/nintendo-sends-president-bush-ds-lite-brain-age/">Nintendo sends President Bush DS Lite, Brain Age</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Jul 2006 20:03:00 EST.
