Beyond all that, however, you'll also be fighting terrifying, wild bears, as the trailer above implies. Thankfully for you, we can confirm it: yes, you'll be fighting the bear seen in the above trailer.<br /><br />The gameplay trailer for <em>Assassin's Creed 3</em> - unlocked <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/07/assassins-creed-3-teaser-promises-to-make-this-redcoats-coat-r/">by the community</a> this morning - shows the first Connor-on-Bear action we've seen. Connor) isn't the smooth-talking debutant that kicked off <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-2"><em>Assassin's Creed 2</em></a>. Instead, he's a brutal hunter, stalking his targets from treetops before leaping down on them for the final blow (you may <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/assassins-creed-3-rebuilding-a-series-during-the-birth-of-a-na/">already know this stuff</a>).<br /><br />Moreover, he's a crack shot with a bow, as seen in the latest teaser for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-3"><em>Assassin's Creed 3</em></a>. Ubisoft is goading fans to do its viral advertising with promises of a lengthier trailer after reaching a certain level of buzz on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/assassinscreed/app_380199672019307">this Facebook page</a>, which we <em>totally do not support</em>. On the other hand, we're totally down to see what happens to the flailing Redcoat. From behind the smoke a group of four rebels emerge and open fire on an ammo depot I'm set on defending. Two of the invaders are felled in a hail of shots from my submachine gun. Two other foes scatter and leave me standing alone. The area is mine, and mine alone.<br /><br />I hole up, waiting for a flanking attack -- but nothing happens. Seconds later I hear a crack in the air. A blip registers on my radar. Then another crack and I fall to my feet, dead.<br /><br />What seems fairly standard turns into something new and interesting. Like <em>Call of Duty: Modern Warfare</em> before it, <em>Far Cry 3</em> reveals lethal enemy positions via a kill cam. Or something like that. "It's part of a bigger discussion. Obviously any setting is potentially awesome," he said in a brief PAX East show floor followup. "The point we were making was that some settings are more familiar in video games than other settings. And the two particular ones that were mentioned are very familiar video game settings."<br /><br />Hutchinson is referring to both the World War II and Feudal Japan ideas brought up during an interview with OXM recently. "The exciting thing is that the game can go anywhere," Hutchinson said. "We've had versions of the assassin ... people have thrown ideas around for probably literally any setting that people would think of. But when you get right down to it - when we're doing the actual nitty gritty of spending the time on it, spending a couple years making something - we wanna go to a setting that other games haven't gone to." As for the aforementioned pair of settings? "We're trying to find places that will surprise people."<br /><br />And Hutchinson doesn't want you to hate him, internet. He also spoke to his statements regarding net denizens coming up with "the most boring settings" for future AC games. "If people think they have the worst ideas, I apologize for that," he told us. "But really, they're very predictable. The internet is not the place for insight, unfortunately," Hutchinson added with a laugh.<br /><br />As for recent news that <em>AC3</em> will be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/assassins-creed-3-follows-desmond-more-than-ever/">Desmond's biggest outing yet</a>, Hutchinson said, "There's a big opportunity when the real timeline crosses the fictional timeline. Like, this is a fun idea. So there's stuff that we have to deal with. We feel like it's about time to pay off the people who've been sticking with the franchise for a long time." When asked if this would be Desmond's last appearance in the series, Ubisoft PR assassins jumped in and said, "I think people are gonna be entertained by it." For 2010's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-brotherhood"><em>Brotherhood</em></a>, four additional studios signed on for support: Singapore, Bucharest, Qu&eacute;bec City, and Annecy. For 2011's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations"><em>Revelations</em></a>, yet another was added (Ubisoft Massive), putting the total at <em>six</em>.<br /><br />For this year's <em>Assassin's Creed 3</em>, the army of studios has been restructured to four: Montreal, Annecy, Queb&eacute;c City, and Singapore.<br /><br />"Annecy is still doing an evolution of the multiplayer," Creative director Alex Hutchinson explained  to Joystiq. As <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/21/assassins-creed-3-multiplayer-comes-from-old-studio-new-lead-d/">we already know</a>, Ubisoft Annecy is working on some form of -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/assassins-creed-3-four-player-co-op-accidentally-revealed-by-xb/">potentially co-op</a> -- multiplayer."There're a few things that are being done in the Qu&eacute;bec studio. So there's an evolution there," he said. Despite prodding, he wouldn't reveal what specifically that tease meant. "We cannot talk about specifically what they are working on." The Qu&eacute;bec studio assisted with level design (among other things) in the past two <em>Assassin's Creed </em>titles.<br /><br />Even though an army is attached to <em>Assassin's Creed 3</em>, it's Montreal that has been focused on the project for the past two and a half years. "80 percent of our team have come through from <em>AC1</em>, <em>AC2</em>. A lot of them didn't do <em>ACB</em> or <em>ACR</em> 'cause they were working on <em>AC3</em>," Hutchinson said. "The turnover has actually been scarily low for a franchise that's been going for seven years. You still have the same lead writer who wrote the first words on <em>AC1</em>, you have the same guy doing the navigation that did <em>AC1</em>."<br /><br />"At its core," Hutchinson said, "it is a Ubisoft Montreal game." He told us, "The thing with other studios is that they have different skill sets. At the end of the day, it's what makes it sometimes harder to manage the game, but it also makes the game richer." It's a formula that, thus far, has worked astonishingly well for Ubisoft. Notoriously absent from that list is a city that I considered to be a lock in the Revolutionary War-based title - my beloved Philadelphia. Having spent six years of my life in Will Smith's place of birth, I hoped for a chance to explore its auspicious beginnings with a hidden blade. It also makes perfect sense for inclusion, given its history as the heart of the American Revolution. So why isn't it included?<br /><br />Though the oft-neglected city was planned early on for open world exploration in the game, creative director Alex Hutchinson told me it was eventually cut for gameplay reasons.<br /><br />"When we started out, Philly was one of the cities that we wanted to do. In the end, we decided against it, 'cause when we mocked it up - as you know, being from Philly, it's an architecturally designed city, so it's on a grid. Which at first we thought would be cool - the first city in AC to be designed on a grid - and then you realize ..." Hutchinson said. His colleague picked up after him.<br /><br />"Well it's on a grid and it's flat, and the avenues are super large. So that's like three things that made us say it doesn't work in an open world." Indeed, Philadelphia was architecturally laid out as a grid by Pennsylvania's first governor William Penn, modeled after European cities of the time.<br /><br />But even the large avenues and rigid layout couldn't keep <em>AC3</em> from Philly. "That said, there are key events that take place in Philadelphia," Hutchinson assured me. In those two years, the team rethought core elements of the series: cities, combat, and the franchise's signature "free running" mechanic. Even the engine, Anvil, was examined and updated (now dubbed "AnvilNext").<br /><br />But before all of that, Hutchinson needed a setting and a character. He wouldn't tell us why or how he settled on the American Revolution (nor would he say what other ideas came up), but he did explain why he believes it'll be a success. "We really believe this is the strongest setting so far in an AC game. Why? Because we think it's the most relevant setting," he said during a group presentation. "This is the birth of the nation. But even for other countries, especially in Europe, it's a key historical event."<br /><br />By the way, for all his U.S pride, Hutchinson is an Aussie <em>and</em> he lives in Canada. That's not quite the case, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat told <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/03/08/ubisoft-says-rainbow-6-patriots-is-still-on-track.aspx">Game Informer</a>.<br /><br />Sears' departure was a mutual decision, Mallat said, and Ubisoft is "evolving the vision that came from David's initial input." Sears, creative director David Sears, narrative director Richard Rouse III, lead designer Philippe Therien and animation director Brent George have left Team Rainbow, Mallat confirmed that Sears at least is still employed by Ubisoft Montreal. Early footage and our own experience with the game delved deep into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/28/the-darker-gray-of-rainbow-6-patriots/">a moral gray area</a>, putting the very real issue of civilian death directly into players' hands -- even to the point of asking players to eliminate civilians for the sake of the greater good.<br /><br />The new direction was undecidedly dark, possibly too dark for Ubisoft, according to a report from <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/03/07/ubisoft-montreal-decapitates-rainbow-6-patriots-development-team.aspx">Game Informer</a>. A GI source states that Ubisoft has all but gutted the development team at Ubisoft Montreal, pulling creative director David Sears, narrative director Richard Rouse III, lead designer Philippe Therien and animation director Brent George off of <em>Rainbow 6: Patriots</em>. It's not clear exactly what this means for the project going forward, but it would definitely seem to indicate a radical change in direction for the potentially controversial title.<br /><br />We've contacted Ubisoft for comment.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Ubisoft has responded to the matter, stating that David Sears has indeed been replaced as creative director. The new creative director is Jean-Sebastien Decant. The game, obviously, will be set during the time of the American Revolution. Weapons will include a bow, gun and tomahawk, with the hatchet blade carved like the assassin's crest. The latest droplet comes from Game Informer (since pulled), which appeared to be a banner ad for an upcoming hub. Those hubs are usually tied to cover reveals, so go ahead and take a wild stab at what next month's issue features.<br /><br />Posted on <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=35612528&amp;postcount=602">NeoGaf</a>, the image shows the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/rumor-assassins-creed-3-takes-place-during-american-revolution/">recently revealed protagonist</a> of <em>Assassin's Creed 3 </em>in the iconic painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware. The image looks quite legit. You know, as a piece of marketing, we doubt the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Crossing_the_Delaware">actual painting</a> has been changed. An elegant in-game display susses out the sweet spot between education and economy, making it an art that is often overlooked by design. And when games aim, claim or clamor to be cinematic, life bars and scores tend to be the first things tossed out as distracting clutter. The traditional HUD is fading from view.<br /><br /><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/ghost-recon-future-soldier"><em>Ghost Recon: Future Soldier</em></a> occupies the same fictional space as <em>Call of Duty</em>, adding a glossy veneer to war and sexing things up with tantalizing gadgets. But Ubisoft's take on modern warfare isn't about seeing -- it's about reading. Oh, there's no shortage of cover-based shooting and GET-TO-THE-RPG-ing in here, but those actions are informed throughout by a busy interface. In comparison to many "immersive" blockbusters, you're getting a library and not a pamphlet.<br /><br />In practice, this means <em>Ghost Recon</em> is about learning to decipher information quickly, and drafting attack blueprints on the fly. Despite being on the action-heavy -- pardon me, streamlined -- spectrum of console games, Future Soldier uses its hologram-heavy premise as an excuse to fill the screen with data. Alexandre Amancio has left Ubisoft in order to serve as Chief Creative Officer for Cossette, a marketing company located in Quebec City, Canada. Amancio leaves the developer seven years after joining in 2005. He was most recently credited as the creative director for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations">Assassin's Creed: Revelations</a></em> and also served as art director for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/far-cry-2"><em>Far Cry 2</em></a>. This marks the second time in as many years that the Assassin's Creed series' Creative Director has left Ubisoft Montreal, following  <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/13/assassins-creed-creative-director-patrice-desilets-leaves-ubiso/">Patrice D&eacute;silets' resignation in 2010</a><i>.</i><br />

"Video games and advertising have many common elements," Amancio said in a <a href="http://www.cossette.com/en/blog/2012/01/10/cossette-annonce-l-arrivee-d-un-nouveau-co-chef-de-la-creation-alexandre-amancio/">press release issued by Cossette</a>. "In both industries, we are always looking for new ways to engage the consumer to the brand." Sounds to us like Amancio will be right at home in the warm bosom of a marketing agency. <em>Assassin's Creed: Revelations</em> for PC has broken free from its sequestered state and is available now for your stabby pleasure. Before the sudden US release, the official word from Ubisoft indicated the game was being held in an undisclosed location until <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/29/assassins-creed-revelations-delayed-until-december-on-pc/">sometime in December</a>, following the console launch all the way back on November 15. It should be available through Steam on Dec. 1 if you're outside the US.<br />

For PC users concerned about Ubisoft's DRM: <em>Revelations</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/10/no-always-on-drm-for-assassins-creed-revelations/">does not feature</a> the company's "always-on" piracy protection. 	Haven't yet had enough of Rayman, despite the recent release of <em>Rayman Origins</em>, you horrible, insatiable glutton? We'll try to turn a blind eye to your avarice as we share with you this exciting news: Ubisoft just announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rayman-3-hoodlum-havoc-hd"><em>Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc</em></a> is being ported from its original Xbox and PS2 platforms to the XBLA and PSN during Spring 2012.</div>

The game will feature an "all-new high-definition makeover," and will be "updated to run at 60 frames per second and offers improved audio quality." Apart from that, it's the same Rayman you've come to know and love: Rewarding platforming, loveable characters and the constant, quiet unease of controlling a protagonist who has apparently been drawn and quartered.<br />

	<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations">Assassin's Creed: Revelations</a>, </em>a third sequel in as many years, is asking a lot. Ubisoft has been remarkably clear that another game is coming next year, and that it will advance the story of Desmond, the series' main character. This leaves <em>Revelations</em> in an awkward position, serving as a coda of sorts to the stories of Ezio Auditore de Firenze and his Crusades-era forbear Altair Ibn-La-Ahad, stories that seemed competently told already. It doesn't seem like <em>Assassin's Creed: Revelations</em> needs to exist -- but then, neither did <em>Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood</em>, which nonetheless turned out to be great.<br />

	Surprise or no, Ubisoft has managed it again. Taking place many years after the events of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations"><em>Assassin's Creed: Revelations</em></a>, this short film produced by Ubi Workshop shows Ezio as a much older dude with a family, retired from the assassination game. But when a young assassin suddenly asks for his help, Ezio must put down the cane and crossword puzzle, and once again pick up the blade. Ubisoft's always on-again, off-again relationship with its restrictive DRM policies is "off-again" for <em>Assassin's Creed: Revelations</em>. <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/11/10/oh-but-some-good-ass-rev-news-drm/">Rock Paper Shotgun</a> reports word from the publisher that it will activate an initial check the first time the game boots up -- and then players are good to go with offline play.<br />

The publisher gave the <em>Assassin's Creed</em> series a break from its always-on DRM <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/ubisoft-explains-assassins-creed-2-pc-drm-restrictions/">after the first sequel</a>, with last year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/22/ac-brotherhood-murders-always-on-drm-stalks-pc-on-march-22/"><em>Brotherhood</em> spared the inconvenience</a>. Meanwhile, other Ubisoft products, like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/27/pc-version-of-driver-san-francisco-needs-permanent-internet-con/">Driver: San Francisco</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/psa-from-dust-patch-now-available-on-pc-removes-ubi-drm/">From Dust</a></em>, have been burdened with the internet-required protection at launch.<br />

Both the reports of an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/report-ubisofts-next-rainbow-six-to-focus-on-moral-dilemmas/">early concept video</a> leaked this past June and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/29/the-next-rainbow-six-game-is-probably-titled-patriots/">web domain acquisitions</a> which pointed at Ubisoft's next installment in the Rainbow Six franchise have proven authentic: <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/11/03/december-cover-revealed-rainbow-6-patriots.aspx">Game Informer</a> just announced its December issue will focus on <em>Rainbow 6: Patriots</em>. The title, which is tentatively scheduled to launch on 360, PS3 and PC in 2013, prominently features the compelling (and presumably controversial) moral dilemmas seen in the video from earlier this year.<br />

Creative director David Sears told Game Informer that in addition to that new "narrative direction," the game will feature "all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love." Video games, by design, are meant to impart fantasy; they let us make believe that we as people are more incredible than we actually are, or that there's more to the world around us than we realize. They're a way to bridge the gap between the possible and the impossible, and music games like <em>Rock Band</em> and <em>Guitar Hero</em> help the musically unskilled escape their lack of real-world training. Even though it's not <em>really</em> like playing a guitar, those games still require skill and concentration, and can be just as satisfying as a result.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rocksmith"><em>Rocksmith</em></a>'s approach to rhythm games is rather different, however, in that it subverts the illusion of musicianship found in its contemporaries in an effort to turn you into a <em>real musician</em>, capable of playing a real, honest to goodness guitar. Though Ubisoft's accounting and marketing departments probably have a greater say in the practice of annualizing Assassin's Creed (y'all keep buying it every year!), the people in charge of the franchise's elaborate fiction have their own impetus in the form of a ticking clock.<br />

With <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations">Assassin's Creed: Revelations</a></em> concluding Ezio's extended quest (and the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/25/assassins-creed-embers-trailer-is-out-of-time/">Embers</a>" animated short providing a dignified epilogue), the plot's modern component -- starring feeble hoodie-hermit Desmond -- is set to run its course by the end of 2012, just in time for next year's AC outing. Creative lead Alexandre Amancio explains it to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-03-first-details-on-2012s-assassins-creed">Eurogamer</a>: "In Assassin's Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012. That's fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point."<br />
<br />
Desmond's tale is far from being the final one in Assassin's Creed, but Amancio believes that having the current protagonist's dilemma linger after calendar 2013 would be "stupid," given the authors' efforts to run parallel to reality. "It would be stupid of us to be centring [sic] a game on a semi-reality and then have that conclusion happen after that date in real life," he says.<br />
<br />

Upon hearing about <a href="http://www.ujam.com/contests/acrevelations/introduction">Ubisoft's singing contest</a> for this November's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations"><em>Assassin's Creed: Revelations</em></a> launch, we've been furiously putting ink to paper in an effort to cage all of our wild lyrical genius. Apparently, that is all for naught, as the contest doesn't actually seek lyrics to go with our symphonic collective voice, but rather one especially melodious vocalist for non-lyrical singing. Rats!<br />
<br />
<em>AC: R</em> composer Lorne Balfe and general composer dude Hans Zimmer explain the contest in the video. They are looking for folks to put vocals to the game's theme song (<a href="http://www.ujam.com/contests/acrevelations/guidelines">available here</a>), and to then get on Facebook for some Marketing 2.0. After reaching the top 20 "Liked" versions of the theme on Facebook, you'll enter the second round, where a handful of musicians (including Zimmer and Balfe, among others) will pick the <em>creme de la creme</em>. Finally, if you're chosen, you get to record your version of the theme, get credits in the game and the soundtrack, and you'll be "awarded" a prize of $1,000. The only question we have now is this: How much would it cost to pay a professional vocalist to record the theme?<br />

Regardless, potential entrants have until 8:00PM PST on September 19 to enter, giving you just under two weeks to get crackin'.
