Quick! Somebody dig up the list of 2010 donors to the American Optometric Association -- and see if Nintendo's on there. The AOA, which represents America's "family eye doctors," has issued a press release to parents in part suggesting that Nintendo's 3DS handled "may actually help uncover subtle disorders" in children's vision when the newfangled three-dee-vice is released this year. "Difficulties with appreciating" 3DS (or other 3D devices and technology), the AOA warns, may suggest something is wrong with your kid -- like, really wrong.

These "subtle problems" could lead to "rapid fatigue of the eyes" and dreaded "loss of 3D viewing," and it could get much worse: "loss of place when reading or copying, reduced reading comprehension, poor grades and increased frustration at school" are all possible nightmares come true if your kids show signs of the "3Ds of 3D viewing" (no, really) -- discomfort, dizziness or lack of depth -- while playing 3DS. How else will you know, if you don't buy one for them immediately?

But what if your kids are too young? After all, Nintendo has warned that children under six shouldn't be playing the handheld in 3D mode. About that ... You see, "children younger than 6 can use the 3DS in 3D mode," the AOA assures, "if their visual system is developing normally." Listen to your family eye doctors, your kids could sure use a 3DS. "In moderation," of course.
Not 'appreciating' 3DS may be sign of vision disorders, eye doctors warn originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 19:30:00 EST.
If you're in the market for a 12 month Xbox Live subscription, then we recommend searching retailers for the Xbox Live Vision bundle because it has been clearance priced to $49 from its original $79 price tag.

The bundle - which comes with 12 months of Xbox Live, Vision camera, wired headset, two XBLA games and 200 Microsoft points - has been spotted at retailers including Best Buy, Circuit City and Gamestop at a low clearance price of $49. We can only speculate that the savings is due to the bundle being discontinued thanks to a newer, hipper and snazzier Live chatpad / PGR4 bundle. You know, those Trouble in Paradise cards that, once scanned, plop the card's character into your virtual garden space. Well, the first Piñata Vision card we're being treated to is Ryan, one of thirty pinata cards that Rare developers have created and (have selfishly) named after themselves. It's a crazy interesting idea that we can't wait to embrace. As long as the scanning process is more efficient then our local grocery store's self checkout lanes. Those wonky scanners are no fun.
First Pinata Vision card goes online originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Aug 2008 18:30:00 EST. But now, thanks to some Joystiq detective work, we know that the game will in fact be bundled with the Xbox 360's Vision camera peripheral for a B movie price of $60. That said, MS hasn't revealed any details for obtaining the game outside the Vision bundle or whether or not the $40 stand-alone Vision camera will still be available this Fall. "We imagine some future generation of [Nintendo's] Wii won't have hand controllers," Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner, told Business Week. "You just set up the cameras around the room and wave your hand like you're playing tennis."

It should be noted that there's nothing in the article to indicate that Rattner has any insider info on Nintendo's plans -- more than likely he was just theorizing about what he'd like to see in a future system. Still, the idea of a camera-based 3D motion-sensing setup has incredible potential for gaming. More than the simple video transposition of the Xbox Live Vision Camera or the PlayStation Eye, a multi-camera system could model your three-dimensional movements in real time, in effect placing a digital version of you in the game. The result could revolutionize the way we play games and even how they're made -- after all, why should developers use motion captured performances when the players can provide them for themselves?

Such a theoretical system would take quite a bit of processing power, though, which might explain why Intel is talking it up -- after all, they already have a chip that can perform one trillion calculations a second. The future's so bright, we're using our Wii remotes as makeshift shades.
Intel predicts camera-powered, controller-free game system originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 15:15:00 EST. European residents can enter the giveaway by answering a rather easy Pac-Man related question over on their site to win prizes galore. What prizes you ask. Well, good question. They're giving away five 12-Month XBL Vision Gold Packs, five XBLA retro tshirts, and fifteen codes to download the new Pac-Man Championship Edition game off the Arcade. So, head on over to their site and enter the giveaway before June 13th. Remember, you must be a European resident, North Americans need not apply.

[Thanks, eLiNeS]
Win Pac-Man, Live subscriptions and Vision cams originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jun 2007 14:00:00 EST. It's been some time since we've seen any Vision Camera shenanigans. This video, however, is special. It's not a video of some jackass on Command & Conquer 3, oh no, this video is not of this world. Gasp as his couch defies the laws of our universe. Feel your mind become one with another dimension as you stare through a man's solid flesh.

If you prefer to preserve the illusion, read no further. It turns out that the Vision camera used in this video was suffering from a case of burn in. It seems the camera has captured the couch in the background for so long that it is permanently within the frame. As it stands, the video teaches us two things. One, be careful using your Vision cam for prolonged amounts of time. Two, if you're not worried about your Vision's well-being, this should make for an interesting party trick.
The amazing invisible gamer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 19:00:00 EST. Today we found this picture taken from Rainbow Six Vegas created by frasermoo. Yes, that is the face of an infant. The face of an infant mounted onto a lethal terrorist killing machine to be specific. While we can't argue the hilarity of such a juxtaposition, we do have to question the logistics of such an endeavor. What had to be done to keep this child still enough to capture his face this accurately? What nefarious harnesses were put to use for the sole sake of creating a humorous avatar? Hopefully, this baby has a penchant for sitting perfectly still and looking cute all the time.

Any Vegas players spot any other freaky avatars out there?
Vision shenanigans: R6 Vegas baby originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Mar 2007 12:30:00 EST. Tests were conducted on two groups of non-gamers, one of which received 30 hours of "training" on fast-paced action games such as Lost Planet and Halo. This type of game pushes the human visual system to its limits, causing the brain to adapt and, well, level up your sense of spatial resolution, allowing you to see closely-packed objects more clearly.

Unfortunately, playing Gears of War won't help you lose the contact lenses. Most visual problems have to do with the eye itself, whereas video games only benefit neurologically-related conditions.

But hey, an excuse to play video games is an excuse to play video games.

[Thanks, NoHitHair]
Playing video games improves eyesight originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Mar 2007 09:27:00 EST. That being said, the Vision Camera, being a USB webcam, can work on a PC. You can add the Playstation 3 to the list, as the PS3 now accepts virtually all USB cameras, thanks to its 1.54 firmware update. While only one of our bloggers had the fiscal irresponsibility to pick up a PS3, does this affect any of you multi-platform readers. And if so, how would you feel using the Vision camera during a video chat on the other console?
Vision Cam works with PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Mar 2007 14:15:00 EST. A group of students played Unreal Tournament and another group played Tetris, which was selected because of its motor complexity but visual simplicity. After regular training with the respective games, the UT players more easily identified the orientation of a letter "T" among a jumble of other shapes in a crowding test. The Tetris group's responses didn't change.

The study suggests that action games alter the way our minds process information even after playing; the researchers think that games could help combat certain visual disorders. We just hope that our improved ability to identify objects makes up for our blurred vision after marathon game nights.
University of Rochester: Action games improve vision originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 15:51:00 EST. This week at Circuit City or online you can get the Xbox Live Vision camera for $29.99 and the wireless controller for $39.99. That's a savings of $10 on each item! $30 is a great "try me" price for the Vision camera to see if you enjoy it. And it even comes with UNO in the package and TotemBall to download. Did you find any great Xbox 360 deals in this week's paper or online?
Save $10 on Vision and wireless controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 14 Jan 2007 18:40:00 EST. Since moving to Washington our friend Chris hasn't had much interaction with his family and this was his first holiday season without them. What else could he do except purchase his family a Vision camera, get one for himself, and open presents via Xbox Live. Technology bringing together a family, now that's priceless. Have you used your Vision camera to talk with family that lives far away, or newly found friends, or to do some video conferencing? Bringing people together this holiday season, the Vision camera saves the day!
A long distance Xbox 360 Vision X-mas originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Dec 2006 18:00:00 EST. Today we bring you the holy grail of face mapping evidence: video. It seems that the overall goal of face mapping, however, is not to map normal faces. If our previous commenters are to be believed, Vegas players have been trying all kinds of head gear, from sun glasses to Spiderman masks. It's fitting, then, that this video features a woman using the face mapping feature to give Xbox Live a permanent raspberry. How does it look? Pretty good actually. We mocked up his in game avatar next to his real life mug in the image above. Vegas fans out there may be wondering how Major Nelson came by those cool shades and hat in Vegas. Does he have access to special content because he works for Microsoft? Nope, he was actually wearing those things when he captured his face with the Vision camera. Knowing this, we can only imagine the lengths that some people might go to in order to really customize their character. You want pink and blue camouflage face paint (you know, for sneaking around a cotton candy machine)? Just paint yourself up and take a picture! In theory, you could add anything to your face before you take the picture: tattoos, fake scars, crazy contact lenses, the possibilities are endless.

Now that you've seen the results, will you try anything special to customize your character?
Vegas face mapping: Larry, meet Larry originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 15:30:00 EST. We've covered them selling wireless controls and Live headsets, and the Live Vision Gold bundle in the past. Now they're doing it again. The Live Vision Camera deal apparently sold so fast that Stootsi decided to offer it a second time for all the people who missed out. They are currently selling the Xbox Live Vision Camera Gold bundle for $54.99 plus $5 shipping. So, you can grab this for $59.99, $20 off the retail price. Just for a moment, let's peruse the contents of this pack:

Vision Camera

Live Headset

1 Year of Xbox Live Gold

200 MS Points

Two Live Arcade games (Totem Ball and Robotron 2084)

That's a lot of stuff for not a lot of scratch. If you've got the cash and you don't have a Vision cam, this is a hell of a deal. Anybody plan on getting it? You've got just over 22 hours to pick one up.

[Thanks, get over it]
2nd chance, Vision Gold pack for $59 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Nov 2006 13:30:00 EST. If you list your Xbox Live Arcade games by category, there is a section for Vision Camera enabled games. In that category, Texas Hold 'em -- or as I call it, Texas Hold Them -- is listed as Vision enabled. Granted, I don't play Hold 'em very much, so I fired it up just to be sure. Lo and behold, there is no Vision support. Does this mean that Hold 'em will have an upgrade in the near future, or did someone at 360 HQ make a mistake?
Texas Hold 'em to get Vision upgrade? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Oct 2006 15:30:00 EST. We all know that. We've been told that it's not going to be the fall dashboard update. Naturally, this has led many to speculate as to what the update actually is. Xbox.com simply states that we should expect some new My Xbox features. The last set of features delivered included things like the ability to check your Live messages from a computer, and send them as well. Considering the release of the Live Vision camera (finally got one myself), many are speculating that the new update will allow Live members to open picture messages from a PC.

Let's think about this. Before the PC entered the equation, pictures were bound to the 360, but should they be accessible on a PC, they could be saved, altered, redistributed, you name it. If the word in your mind right now isn't "porn" ... well, you're probably more well adjusted than I am, but I digress. Hell, just playing the Phantasy Star Universe beta last night, I saw several offers to the tune of "I'LL SEND U A PIC FOR $." Sure, technologically, it's nothing new, but you don't even have to leave the couch for crying out loud.

Long story short, if the new features turn out to include PC based picture messaging, it will be interesting to say the least. Scary? Titillating? What do you think?
Xbox Live update: possible pr0n expansion? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Oct 2006 13:55:00 EST. The catch: you need Microsoft's Xbox Live Vision camera to play the game.

Totem Ball was announced as a free download for all camera purchases but, considering the device hit retail a little early and the game's release is a little late, the retail box came with no Totem Ball registration key. No worries, that's why they stuck it up on Live as a free download (you need the camera either way). The first gesture-based XBLA game proves that the Vision camera is capable of being using as an input device, but is it more than a simple proof of concept?
Totem Ball gesticulates onto Xbox Live Arcade originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Oct 2006 11:00:00 EST. That's a shame because right now it's the best reason to pick up a Vision. I'm not an expert when it comes to poker (either the real or video game variety) but this game is a worthy upgrade from the bare bones XBLA version that most people downloaded for free, if only for the chance to...um... play with yourself.

Point blank, the Digimask tech just works. You snap a pic from the front and side profile and the game takes a couple minutes to map your face over a 3D frame. I tried it under mediocre lighting conditions and it worked on the first try. Speaking as a geek who spent hours painstakingly building my virtual doppelganger in the last Tiger Woods (long the Cadillac of create-a-character modes), poor, forgotten WSoP presented me with most accurate representation of my own handsome face I've ever seen in a game, It does warp your lower face a bit, but the eyes, ears and nose were spot on. I've only slept about 6 hours over the past couple days and it was awesome to see the same black under eye circles I saw in the mirror on my newly created me. The 3D modeling is a vast improvement over previous attempts at this sort of thing. In fact, the detail was so good that my wife refused to give it a shot without doing her make-up. I tried it again sporting a Mr. T "Pity the fool" scowl to see if it could handle a little emotion and the results were equally impressive.
Continue reading World Series of Poker: First Impressions

World Series of Poker: First Impressions originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Sep 2006 22:30:00 EST.

Bankshot Billiards 2

Hardwood Hearts

Hardwood Spades

Hardwood Backgammon

The press release also reminds parents to check their family settings. Good idea.

Speaking of adult-oriented action, Activision's World Series of Poker: Tournament of Champions, the first game to take advantage of the Digimask facial mapping stuff, hits store shelves today.

So Microsoft has camera support covered as far as pool sharking and problem gambling are concerned. Now where are the gesture-based games, starting with Totem Ball? I have read that the Vision is supposed to come with a download code for that flailing effort, but the $40 SKU I picked up at Toys R Us included only Uno and one month of XBL Gold (There are no titles mentioned on the packaging).

I'll try out the facial mapping feature in WSoP tonight and let you know if it does my handsome mug justice.
Vision library expands beyond Uno originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Sep 2006 05:00:00 EST. After a weekend spent playing Uno under the watchful gaze of complete strangers (at the expense of this blog I'm afraid), I can report that the camera is a worthy purchase based on that cool watery dashboard effect alone. Webcams have been around forever, but it still feels strange to have to check your boxers for complete scrotal coverage while playing a console. Just pray the guy on the other side does the same. I talked to a couple girl gamers who had already witnessed Uno hands that devolved into a sordid game-within-a-game of "show me yours, I'll show you mine" to the shrieking glee of the zit-faced participants (and presumably, the horror of the ESRB). Wild Cards never had so much economic clout. Expect this type of seedy peep show bartering to take off as the Vision makes its way into more sweaty palms this week. It will probably take a couple months before the novelty of pimping out your girlfriend for color changes wears off, or at least settles to a tolerable level. In the mean time, YouTube should prepare for a flood of poorly lit softcore with the same soundtrack.
Vision Camera: Uno uncensored originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Sep 2006 00:00:00 EST. Big deal, you say. But wait, there's more! This video podcast is all about the new Vision camera, which comes out tomorrow (assuming you couldn't snag one early from Toys R Us). The video -- weighing in at over twenty minutes long -- outlines all the super nifty great features of the peripheral. And, did we hear that Rainbow Six: Vegas will feature face mapping? We're pretty sure we did.

Those of you interested in the camera (vibration functions and all) should definitely check it out.
Major Nelson demos Vision camera originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Sep 2006 15:10:00 EST. No retail box here, just the tiny little camera and its accompanying PR fact sheet ("Microsoft Corp.'s line of Xbox 360[TM] Authentic Products continues to grow while ..."). The sheet does detail the two bundles that will be released on September 19th, clipped after the break.

We hurriedly grabbed some snaps before hooking up the Vision to the ol' 360 and taking it for a spin around the UNO block ... where IT happened. We've grown (abnormally) accustomed to the sort of blue language one finds while playing outside of the confines of your Xbox Live friends list -- this is of course, entirely different than the blue language you enjoy while playing with your friends, but we digress -- but it wasn't ten minutes before we had our first PG-13 exposure. They note two missing features: 4-way chat and the ability to save pictures to the hard drive. I would add making the video chat window full screen, but that's what dash updates are for, right? These guys don't demonstrate the "vibrate the other dude's controller" capability, which is probably a good thing. Personally, I'd buy it just for the trippy water effect.

Check out Gamasutra for some detail on the really interesting stuff like the DigiMask facial mapping soon to be displayed in
World Series of Poker: Tournament of Champions.

Anybody else who managed to get their hands on a Vision, please give us your first impressions.
Vision Cam video review originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 03 Sep 2006 18:15:00 EST. Not the old "Captain America and the Avengers" Vision. Some may confuse the two. Some meaning one. The announcement of the camera isn't breaking news, but the price is right. About $40 nets you all the features of the old PS2 eyetoy, plus an extra feature or two. Consider Microsoft's little toy a mixture of the Wiimote and the PS2 eyetoy and you'll kind of understand. Other specs are detailed here.

While this Vision thing doesn't exactly push the limits on its competition (Wii, PS3 EyeToy), it's still a sort of tool to limit the ability of the other consoles. Sort of a "we can do that, too, so just spend $40 instead of another $250 or, heaven forbid, $600." Not saying anything about stealing ideas, because in the business world, that's how advancement works. Of course, they don't call it stealing, but alas. If you had every next-gen console in your house (delivered by a stork made of gold... and chocolate), which would you use as a camera-esque toy of sorts?
Xbox's EyeToy -- oops, Vision originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Aug 2006 10:00:00 EST. Originally set for an September 19th release, Toys R Us has beaten the official street date by an entire month. Wait to go, Toys R Us! Any of you lucky enough to grab one early? Better act now before Microsoft wises up, thus preventing you from contributing to the burgeoning 360 video sex chat boom.

[Via Joystiq. Titles include Bankshot Billiard 2, Hearts, Spades and Backgammon. Juicing up the old games should add some depth to a cam-enabled line-up that already looks pretty solid with Uno, Totem Balls and World Series of Poker leading the way.

Meanwhile, Godfree from Gamertag is campaigning hard for votes in the Podcast Awards, and he's doing it the old-fashioned way: With bribery. The aforementioned games will be joined by UNO, which is already compatible with the camera.

The games will be Vision-compatible via updates when the Vision Camera launches on September 19.
Current XBLA to be updated for use with camera originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Aug 2006 23:27:00 EST. If you'd like information on what other peripherals are coming out "Holiday 2006" (so sometime in the 4th quarter) and at what price, read on for more.
Continue reading $40 XBL Vision camera & UNO bundle detailed by MS source along with prices & dates for other 360 accessories

$40 XBL Vision camera & UNO bundle detailed by MS source along with prices & dates for other 360 accessories originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Jun 2006 00:26:00 EST.
