One of our favorite Twitter accounts, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/petermolydeux">@petermolydeux</a>, is a constant source of entertainment, but now he's taken it to the next level. Rather than leave it up to us to imagine his insane gaming ideas, he's gone ahead and created a video proposal for <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcDgaUKBRZE"><em>CasCore</em></a>, a game that marries the casual gameplay of <em>Wii Sports</em>' bowling with the hardcore survival-horror genre.<br />
<br />
Give your imagination a break already and check out the prototype video above. How else will you see a child's dreams crammed into a bowling ball?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/14/we-want-to-play-peter-molydeuxs-cascore-prototype/">We want to play Peter Molydeux's 'CasCore' prototype</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Nov 2011 14:30:00 EST. Nintendo's new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/wii-drops-to-150-on-may-15-bundled-with-mario-kart-and-wheel/"><em>Mario Kart Wii</em> pack</a> is coming to Europe on May 20, at a "reduced trade price" around &pound;129/&euro;150.<br />
<br />
The budget "<a href="http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/systems/nintendo_selects_32867.html">Nintendo Selects</a>" line will launch in Europe the same day, featuring a slightly different lineup from the American version: <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/wii-sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/animal-crossing-city-folk"><em>Animal Crossing: City Folk</em></a> (under the overlong European title <em>Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City</em>), <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/mario-strikers-charged"><em>Mario Strikers Charged</em></a>, and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warioware-smooth-moves"><em>WarioWare Smooth Moves</em></a>. <em>Mario Super Sluggers</em> isn't part of the series because it was never released in Europe!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/05/nintendo-selects-a-slightly-different-set-of-games-for-europe/">'Nintendo Selects' a slightly different set of games for Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 May 2011 09:35:00 EST. Nintendo has officially announced an impending price drop for the Wii. As of May 15 (confirming our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/12/rumor-nintendo-dropping-wii-price-to-150-on-may-15th/">earlier report</a>), the Wii will be sold at a suggested retail price of $149.99, and will come bundled with <em>Mario Kart Wii</em> and the Wii Wheel accessory. The new price applies to both black and white system models.<br />
<br />
Now that Mario and his comical transportation have been crammed into the box, <em>Wii Sports</em> and <em>Wii Sports Resort</em> are out. On May 15, the original sports collection will join the "Nintendo Selects" line of budget-priced software, alongside <em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk and Mario Super Sluggers</em>. Expect to pay $19.99 for each of those (and accept the obligatory punishment of polluted box art).<br />

After only four and a half years, it looks like Nintendo is finally ready to introduce a line of budget titles in North America. <a href="http://kotaku.com/#!5797802/and-so-we-enter-the-wii-budget-age-with-the-arrival-of-wii-select">Kotaku</a> reports that the "Wii Select" line will launch alongside the newly discounted Wii, which is rumored to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/12/rumor-nintendo-dropping-wii-price-to-150-on-may-15th/">drop to $150</a> two weeks from now. The first titles reported to be part of the $20 lineup include <em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</em>, <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em>, <em>Mario Super Sluggers </em>and <em>Wii Sports</em>.<br />
<br />
Yes, Wii Sports is supposedly being removed from its position as the longstanding pack-in for Wii console bundles. Taking the bundle's place will be a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mario-kart-wii"><em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a> bundle, which will be sold at the rumored $150 price point.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/rumor-wii-select-budget-line-launching-this-month/">Rumor: 'Wii Select' budget line launching this month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 May 2011 11:00:00 EST. Many of these games, including <em>Wii Sports</em> and <em>Wii Fit</em>, have been out for years, but still managed to sell more than a million units over the last four quarters! <br />
<br />
On DS, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/pokemon-heart-gold">Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver</a></em> have sold an astonishing 8.4 million copies -- 3.78 million in Japan, where the game's been out since September, and 4.62 million outside of Japan in just a few short weeks of availability before the close of the fiscal year. Nintendo's Japan-only <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/tomodachi-collection">Tomodachi Collection</a></em> sold 3.2 million copies, and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/professor-layton-and-the-diabolical-box">Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box</a></em> moved a respectable 2.43 million copies outside of Japan. Even <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/style-savvy">Style Savvy</a></em>, which has a somewhat low profile in North America and Europe, sold 1.21 million copies in those territories. As for two perennial bestsellers, <em>Mario Kart DS</em> and <em>New Super Mario Bros.</em> each sold over three million copies outside of Japan in the last fiscal year.<br />
<br />
Nintendo's marquee 2009 Wii titles, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort">Wii Sports Resort</a></em>, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit-plus">Wii Fit Plus</a></em> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/new-super-mario-bros-wii"><em>New Super Mario Bros. Wii</em></a>, sold more than 10 million units each in North America and Europe alone; and worldwide, those titles sold 16.14 million, 12.65 million, and 14.7 million copies, respectively, through the fiscal year. But if you think <em>those</em> are big numbers, think again. Thanks to <em>Wii Sports</em> being bundled with the Wii system outside of Japan, the game now totals 63.46 million units sold. Heck, even <em>Link's Crossbow Training</em> (bundled with the Wii Zapper) broke a million sold in the last fiscal year.<br />
<br />
Head past the break for the complete list of million-sellers from Nintendo's fiscal year ending March 31, 2010.<br />

It'll be available in stores <em>today</em>, and on Walmart.com this Sunday. There's no reason not to pick this one up instead of the normal Wii package: this new bundle sells for the same $199 price!<br />
<br />
According to Walmart, it'll only be available "while supplies last," which, given the history of the Wii platform, could be a surprisingly short time.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> We were additionally informed by a Walmart representative that the bundle contains "[one] normal Wii console you would purchase -- comes with all the same components -- for $199, except that you're getting <em>Wii Sports Resort</em> (with the packaged Wii MotionPlus)." Still quite a deal!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/05/walmart-exclusive-wii-bundle-includes-wii-sports-resort/">Walmart-exclusive Wii bundle includes Wii Sports Resort</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 17:21:00 EST. It doesn't take a research grant to figure out that exercise -- heck, just walking around the block once a day -- can have a dramatic effect on a person's well-being. The problem is that so-called "older adults," who are particularly prone to a mild but no less debilitating depression known as subsyndromal depression (SSD), are really just too bummed out to do much of anything. Here's where the grant money comes in: Dilip V. Jeste, MD, and his team of researches at UCSD gathered up 19 seniors diagnosed with SSD and had each of them play <em>Wii Sports</em> for 35 minutes, three times a week.<br />
<br />
"The study suggests encouraging results from the use of the exergames," Dr. Jeste reports. "More than one-third of the participants had a 50-percent or greater reduction of depressive symptoms." Additionally, most participants claimed that learning to to play those <em>darned vidja games</em> was actually pretty easy -- even enjoyable. Uh-oh. Red flag!<br />
<br />
You see, had Dr. Jeste continued his study, he might have found that his guinea pigs would soon discover that <em>Wii Sports</em> can easily be played with the slightest flicks of the wrist and, ah yes, it is nice to just sit back on the couch again, but, oh boy, this game is really getting boring, so let me just get on the dag blasted google and see what -- <em>here we go</em> -- "the best videogame right now," okay, <a href="http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080509082339AA4DZme">the yahoo's answer says</a>: <em>World of Warcraft</em>. Look, we get just as tired of seeing Nintendo's remarkably high software sales figures every few months as you do -- that's why, this time around, we're going to do things a <em>little</em> differently. We're just going to add up all the life-to-date totals for the company's biggest titles, and just drop them in one big chunk. Ready? Okay, here we go: <em>247,780,000</em>.<br />
<br />
Well, that sure didn't work. Fine, we'll break down each of the games highlighted by Nintendo's <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2010/100129e.pdf">recent financial report</a> (warning: .pdf link) and post their FY2010 sales and life-to-date sales after the jump. (Fun fact: All of the Wii games actually have "Wii" in the title. It's like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_64_games">the Nintendo 64 days</a> all over again!)<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/latest-nintendo-software-sales-report-features-large-numbers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Latest Nintendo software sales report features large numbers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/latest-nintendo-software-sales-report-features-large-numbers/">Latest Nintendo software sales report features large numbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 14:30:00 EST. Across two of Nintendo's biggest markets, the US and Europe, the house that Mario built has managed to get a lot of its hardware and software into customers' hands, reporting huge sales milestones and a very prosperous December. In <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2009/nintendo_ds_is_best_selling_videogame_console_in_europe_15484.html">Europe</a>, the DS is now the best-selling video game console of all time, surpassing the 40 million mark in the region. The Wii now tops 20 million, becoming the fastest-selling console in the region since its release three years ago. There's also some data on Nintendo's games to chew on, including <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort">Wii Sports Resort</a>,</em> which sold five million since releasing in July, and <a href="http://www,joystiq.com/tag/new-super-mario-bros"><em>New Super Mario Bros. Wii</em></a>, which just reached 2.5 million units sold.<br />
<br />
As for <a href="http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=21708">the States</a>, Nintendo's been raking in equally impressive amounts of cash here. In December, three million Wii consoles were purchased and the DS set "a new all-time calendar-year U.S. sales record for any console or hand-held system." You know, just like <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/3vrEIL4gq33i0RmNbYJ9i97j65EwSpVI">the company did last year</a>. Also, <em>New Super Mario Bros. Wii</em> had quite the stellar showing in the U.S., achieving lifetime sales of four million units in the region. <br />
<br />
In short: Nintendo is pretty much the same as always.<br />

Nintendo must've had some luck with its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/dsi-dipping-its-toes-into-10-000-lakes/">Great Lakes</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/23/nintendo-hits-the-road-to-promote-wii-sports-resort/"><em>Wii Sports Resort</em> tours</a> recently, as the company has announced the <a href="http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=20854">Nintendo Mall Experience tour</a>. Starting next week through December 20, The Big N will be stopping at shopping centers across the country to get some of its Wii and DS titles in the faces of holiday shoppers.<br />
<br />
On the Wii side, Nintendo will show off its top three games for the holiday season: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort"><em>Wii Sports Resort</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/new-super-mario-bros-wii">New Super Mario Bros. Wii</a> </em>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit-plus"><em>Wii Fit Plus</em></a>. For the handheld crowd, Nintendo will be pushing the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/style-savvy"><em>Style Savvy</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/professor-layton-and-the-diabolical-box"><em>Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-legend-of-zelda-spirit-tracks"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks</em></a>. Head past the break for the full list of stops on Nintendo's Mall Experience tour.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/18/nintendo-mall-experience-tour-heads-cross-country-next-week/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo Mall Experience tour heads cross-country next week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/18/nintendo-mall-experience-tour-heads-cross-country-next-week/">Nintendo Mall Experience tour heads cross-country next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 16:45:00 EST. Look, if people are going to eschew their work day in favor of having a gaming tournament, we're the first to sympathize. In the case of those in the business of <em>protecting our lives</em> from murderers and financial institutions though, we find it hard to offer much solace. So when eleven officials from several Florida agencies were <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/09/22/police-raid-home-raid-occupants-wii-sports-leaderboards/">caught on videotape</a> playing games a couple months back and the story caught on internationally, we were hopeful that those found guilty would maybe, you know, actually receive some form of punishment.<br />
<br />
Instead, <a href="http://www.theledger.com/article/20091111/NEWS/911115012/1338?&amp;tc=autorefresh">the Lakeland Ledger</a> reports that the offending officers will suffer such retribution as ... a few hours of retraining? The names of the officers are even being withheld due to their "undercover" status at the time. Lakeland sheriff chief of staff Gary Hester goes as far as to say, "We are learning from our mistakes ... I think we handled [the investigation] properly." He then hurriedly rushed back to a game of <em>Street Fighter IV</em> in progress against a competing police department. <br />
<br />

No price has been announced for any of these items. We were certain -- <em>absolutely</em> certain -- that the epidemic of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrrvkPo7TZ4">fractured television screens</a> which cropped up with the release of the Wii had passed. Everyone's heard the horror stories, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/16/wii-related-injury-roundup/">seen the blackened eyes</a> and witnessed the ruined electronics, we thought. Everyone now knows the methods of avoiding Wiimote accidents during their exuberant <em>Wii Sports</em> bouts, we thought. The Home Shopping Network recently proved the inaccuracy of this observation.<br />
<br />
The hilarity unfolds in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a07W2t2wcRA#t=04m54s">the video after the jump</a>. While some might grimace at the fate of the poor television featured in the video, remember that they're charging $330 for a Wii and 15 completely unnecessary controller attachments. Call it an accident, if you'd like -- we call it Karma in action.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/18/hsn-teaches-valuable-lesson-about-wii-accessory-safety/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HSN teaches valuable lesson about Wii accessory safety</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/18/hsn-teaches-valuable-lesson-about-wii-accessory-safety/">HSN teaches valuable lesson about Wii accessory safety</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 18 Oct 2009 18:30:00 EST. Aside from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@nintendo,@wii,rumor">multiple retailer listings</a> and today's alleged <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/rumor-internal-best-buy-memo-confirms-wii-price-cut-this-sunday/">internal Best Buy memo</a>, MCV <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/35882/New-UK-Wii-bundle-leaked">reports</a> that a "retail source" told it the UK won't be receiving the same price cut that North America and Japan are expected to receive. Instead, the current model will be given the bundle treatment.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/no-wii-price-cut-for-uk">GamesIndustry.biz</a> spotted the new bundle on <a href="http://www.shopto.net/WII/HARDWARE/WIICO22-Wii%20Console%20%2B%20Wii%20Sports%20%2B%20Wii%20Sports%20Resort%20%2B%20Wii%20Motion%20Plus.html">ShopTo.net</a> -- it has since been removed, though an image and a shell of the page still exist -- which includes both <em>Wii Sports</em> and <em>Wii Sports Resort</em> as well as a MotionPlus attachment, for the same &pound;199.99 ($326.76) the system is priced at now. If it is true, at least UK Wii buyers will be getting a bit more for their pounds. Police are good at three things: protecting; serving; and <em>bowling</em>. During a recent raid in conjunction with several Florida agencies, officers came across the occupant's Wii console and, instead of ignoring it and going about their day, decided to turn the little white box on and throw down in some bowling with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>. What they didn't notice is that the occupant had a secret security camera set up that filmed every strike and gutterball, <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/32962059#32962059">MSNBC</a> shares. We're having a hard time imagining a <span style="font-style: italic;">controllable,</span> skill-based water slide game, which may have been one reason it didn't end up in <span style="font-style: italic;">Resort</span>. "As for more unconventional concepts, we created a pretty fun prototype of <em>kendama,</em> a traditional Japanese toy, that just didn't fit the game's theme." So, a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kendama">toy</a> didn't fit the "resort" theme, but fighting with fake swords was completely appropriate? Working at Nintendo is complicated.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/04/wii-sports-resort-the-lost-games/">Wii Sports Resort: The lost games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Sep 2009 09:35:00 EST. Nintendo's tropical minigame getaway, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort"><em>Wii Sports Resort</em></a>, has managed to entice one million gamers in the US, the publisher has <a href="http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=19735">announced</a>. Debuting July 26, it didn't take the game long to reach that number (it sold 508,000 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/july-npd-hardware-sales-slide-wii-sports-resort-soars/">in July</a>), and we're sure that we'll be writing another post like this one in a month or so when the game reaches two million in sales. You know, we often wonder why we don't have a large, flammable recreation of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort"><em>Wii Sports Resort</em></a>'s Wuhu Island sitting on our desk, but then we remember most of our work is done while being chained to a laptop in some random dungeon in Philadelphia. While we may be starved for sunlight (not to mention just plain starving), seeing things like <a href="http://www.nintendopapercraft.com/2009/08/wii-sports-resort-wuhu-island.html">this piece of papercraft</a> gives us hope. Hope that we can make cheap pieces of art when we're finally so malnourished that we can slip out of our shackles. <br /><br />Hit up the gallery below for more Nintendo-inspired papercraft, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/awesome-nintendo-papercraft/803570/">this awesome Wolf Link</a>.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/papercraft-recreates-wii-sports-resorts-wuhu-island/">Papercraft recreates Wii Sports Resort's Wuhu Island</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 18:15:00 EST. Well, Nintendo rarely does the obvious. In an interview with <a href="http://www.torontothumbs.com/2009/08/11/interview-nintendo-of-canadas-matt-ryan-on-wii-sports-resort-and-wii-motionplus/">Toronto Thumbs</a>, Nintendo of Canada's Matt Ryan dismissed the idea of a new bundle in the near future. <br /><br />"The long-term plan is difficult to say, but I can tell you that there are no plans to make <em>Wii Sports Resort </em>what is packed in with the Wii purchase," Ryan said, adding "What is in the Wii box will remain the same." In case you couldn't pick up the subtext, he reiterated "<em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort">Wii Sports Resort</a> </em>will not replace <em>Wii Sports</em>."<br /><br />Why not? Ryan described <em>Resort</em> as "more full-on software that you're used to purchasing at retail at that price point," while the original <em>Wii Sports</em> is "designed to show off what the Wii Remote can do." Although Japanese consumers have had <em>no</em> issues with buying separate copies of <em>Wii Sports.</em><br /><br />Normally, we'd just assume that there <em>is</em> a plan for a bundle, but Nintendo doesn't want to talk about it -- except that there haven't been official bundles for <em>Wii Fit</em> or <em>Mario Kart Wii</em>. Like we said, Nintendo avoids the obvious.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/">Wii Sports Resort</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923443"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923444"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923445"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923446"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923447"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/nintendo-no-plans-for-wii-sports-resort-bundle/">Nintendo: No plans for Wii Sports Resort bundle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 12:40:00 EST. Upon my initial skydive into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort"><span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Sports Resort</span></a>, I expected the game wouldn't wow me much. I'd seen it during various stages of its life and played it many times. Now that I had the final product, I expected it would hold little in the way of surprise.<br />
<br />
But as I started unlocking games and playing more, I found myself losing track of time. Many of us know that a great game can just suck you in and you can easily lose hours mining it for all of its glorious, fun riches. <span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Sports Resort</span> was no different for me.<br />

Kids-focused health journal Pediatrics <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/booster_shots/2009/07/kids-exergaming-calories.html">recently published a study</a> that would <em>shock</em> those who decry the health benefits of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/exergaming">exergames</a>. The study, which was performed by researchers from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, measured young people's energy expenditure while at rest, while playing <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dance-Dance-Revolution/">Dance Dance Revolution</a> </em>at two different skill levels, while walking and running on a treadmill and while boxing and bowling on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>. That sounds like more physical exertion than we go through in a <em>year</em>.<br /><br />Some of the comparisons between these activities yielded somewhat unsurprising results -- playing the video games burned three times the calories the kids spent at rest, <em>of course</em>. However, the researchers also found that playing these games was a comparable activity to "moderate to intense walking," despite the fact that <em>Wii Sports</em> requires little lower-body movement. It seems that for the first time in recent memory, we've got <em>science</em> on our side. Hooray!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5317933/study-touts-calorie+burn-benefits-of-exergaming">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/pediatric-journal-boasts-benefits-of-exergaming/">Pediatric journal boasts about benefits of exergaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 19 Jul 2009 17:30:00 EST. From 10am to 8pm that day, Game Crazy visitors will get to try out <em>Resort</em>, and also enter to win one of two $1,500 gift cards "toward a real-life resort vacation." <br /><br />The following day, Game Crazy will offer an extra 20 percent on games traded in toward the purchase of <em>Resort</em>, which suggests that they <em>do</em> expect people to buy some and not just play it in the store all day Saturday.<br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/16/nintendo-turns-game-crazy-stores-into-wii-sports-resorts/">Nintendo turns Game Crazy stores into Wii Sports Resorts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 11:45:00 EST. It turns out that those three (quite polished) events are pretty much <em>all that existed</em> at the time. In the latest <a href="http://uk.wii.com/wii/en_GB/software/iwata_asks_wii_sports_resort_2200.html#top">Iwata Asks interview</a>, the <em>Wii Sports Resort</em> team reveals that they didn't have anything but the idea of maybe doing another sequel until <em>three months</em> before E3 2008. Above, you can see what <em>had</em> been done: a MotionPlus test involving a virtual toy.<br /><br />As usual, the Iwata Asks interview is full of surprisingly forthright discussion about the inner workings of Nintendo, including the team (and Shigeru Miyamoto) expressing its elation about a MotionPlus delay that allowed for more work on <em>Resort</em>, everyone's relative confusion at Miyamoto's "Wuhu Island" franchise idea, and, best of all, Miyamoto's deceptive methods of team motivation.<br /><br />At one point, Miyamoto announced in an interview that golf would be in <em>Wii Sports Resort</em>, and that the MotionPlus would allow backswing to control the strength of the swing, instead of just speed -- and the team had to rush to <em>actually put golf in the game</em> afterward. Later, he describes how he faked a directive from Satoru Iwata to add an extra game mode. And apparently a programmer couldn't demonstrate the archery feature for Miyamoto because he was too nervous to aim the bow properly.<br /><br />Shigeru Miyamoto sounds like kind of a jerk, actually.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/wii-sports-resorts-e3-2008-demo-completed-in-three-months/">Wii Sports Resort's E3 2008 demo completed in three months</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 20:00:00 EST. Well <em>of course it did</em>. The original <em>Wii Sports</em> currently resides in like, four out of every five households on the planet -- why wouldn't the Japanese gaming populace spring to consumer action when the MotionPlus-bundled follow-up landed on store shelves?<br />
<br />
Within the first four days of its release, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wii-Sports-Resort/">Wii Sports Resort</a> </em>moved 353,827 copies, making it <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.famitsu.com%2Fgame%2Fnews%2F1225419_1124.html%3Fref%3Drss&amp;sl=ja&amp;tl=en&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8">the third-fastest selling Wii title ever</a> -- <em>Mario Kart Wii</em> sold 608,000 copies in a similar time period, while <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> moved 816,000 copies. Whether the frisbee-throwing, sword-dueling, jetski-riding simulator can come close to <a href="http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=2667">the 45 million mark</a> set by its bundled forefather remains to be seen.<br />

First, Nintendo <em>finally</em> announces a Wii in a new color scheme (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/nintendo-releasing-black-wii-red-dsi-this-summer/">black</a>), and now, less than two weeks later, the company has announced <em>another</em> color for the Wiimote and Nunchuk -- and the first new color for the MotionPlus. However, this is going to be a little harder to come by.<br /><br />From June 25 to August 31, Nintendo will give away exclusive light blue Wiimotes, MotionPlus attachments and Nunchuks (and a matching jacket, <em>of course</em>) to five thousand Japanese <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/club-nintendo">Club Nintendo</a> members who register copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/hands-on-wii-sports-resorts-archery-and-canoeing/"><em>Wii Sports Resort</em></a>. This time, twelve games are available for play, and we were able to get our hands on two of those, which we think do an even better job of displaying the difference between a MotionPlus-enabled Wiimote and a stock controller.<br /><br />First, we tried the canoe game, in a two-player race. The goal in this game variant is to cross five checkpoints before the other player. In this game, the Wiimote is a surrogate for the canoe's oar, held vertically with both hands as if it were an actual oar. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/">Wii Sports Resort</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923443"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923444"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923445"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923446"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-sports-resort-1/#923447"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiisports-resort-08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/hands-on-wii-sports-resorts-archery-and-canoeing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on: Wii Sports Resort's archery and canoeing</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/hands-on-wii-sports-resorts-archery-and-canoeing/">Hands-on: Wii Sports Resort's archery and canoeing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 10:00:00 EST. And, of course, we know that hardware sales play a major role in that windfall. But how is Nintendo doing in terms of software sales? Very well, thank you! The company released a list of every million-selling first-party title on the Wii and DS as a <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2009/090508e.pdf">supplement</a> (PDF link) to its <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/index.html">financial report</a>, with no real surprises other than, perhaps, the monolithic <em>bigness</em> of some of the numbers. <br /><br />The best-selling Wii title, of course, is <em>Wii Sports</em>, which sold 45.7 million copies across North American and European bundle sales and standalone Japanese sales.The best-selling DS game: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nintendogs/" style="font-style: italic;">Nintendogs</a>, at 22.3 million copies! <br /><br />We're just happy to see the wonderful <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/joystiq-review-rhythm-heaven/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Rhythm Heaven</span></a> on the list, though there is something <span style="font-style: italic;">odd</span> about it: according to the data, <span style="font-style: italic;">Rhythm Heaven</span> sold 140,000 copies outside of Japan -- but the game didn't even come out in the West until April 5, <span style="font-style: italic;">after</span> the end of the fiscal year.<br /><br />The full list is after the break. Spoiler alert: if you are the type of person who gets angry about Nintendo's success in the expanded market, this will anger you.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5244980/these-are-the-biggest+selling-wii-ds-games-of-all-time">Kotaku</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/08/life-to-date-sales-of-the-biggest-nintendo-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Life-to-date sales of the biggest Nintendo games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/08/life-to-date-sales-of-the-biggest-nintendo-games/">Life-to-date sales of the biggest Nintendo games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 May 2009 16:00:00 EST. Maybe there <em>would</em> be games to play at launch -- old games! "With a nearly two-month span of time between the accessory release and the game's arrival at retail," GameDaily's Micheal Mullen wrote, "we expect that Nintendo will release patches that will make the new accessory work with your already existing library." The first game to receive such treatment, of course, would be the original <em>Wii Sports.</em><br /><br />Nintendo's response to GameDaily suggests that this <em>won't</em> be happening: "The Wii MotionPlus accessory is only for games that are designed to make use of its abilities." Nintendo isn't really much for <em>patching</em> games with updated functionality, unless you consider <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/new-play-control">releasing the game again</a> seven years later on a different disc a kind of "patching."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/15/wii-games-unlikely-to-be-patched-with-motionplus-support/">Wii games unlikely to be patched with MotionPlus support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 10:30:00 EST. Just in case <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/09/iwata-wii-sports-resort-out-in-japan-this-june-overseas-in-jul/">Satoru Iwata's promise</a> of a July release window for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort/"><em>Wii Sports Resort</em></a> wasn't good enough for you, Nintendo sent official word that the upcoming game will launch in the U.S. on July 26. As expected, the beach-themed sequel will come bundled with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MotionPlus/">MotionPlus</a> peripheral for $50, which will be released by itself on June 8 for $20. <br /><br />Nintendo promises that "developers around the world" are working on titles to take advantage of MotionPlus. Purely by coincidence, wrists around the world have begun to cry out in fear.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/14/wii-motionplus-shipping-june-8-wii-sports-resort-following-on-j/">Wii MotionPlus shipping June 8, Wii Sports Resort following on July 26</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 08:53:00 EST. The sequel to the Wii launch title will be out in Japan this June, with an "overseas" release the following month, according to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/companyNewsAndPR/idUST26300020090409?pageNumber=1&amp;virtualBrandChannel=0">Reuters' account</a> of statements made at a lunch meeting. No pricing was announced. The July release is completely in line with the rumored European date called "rumor and speculation" by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/nintendo-of-europe-calls-motionplus-release-date-rumor-and-spec/">NoE</a>.<br /><br />The Nintendo president named <em>Wii Sports Resort</em> as a measure to combat the Japanese Wii market's current slowdown (a situation he described as "the most unhealthy situation since its launch in Japan.") He denied that Nintendo would cut Wii prices in order to increase sales, saying, "If our products are not much different from competitors', price cuts would generate significant fresh demand. When she's not busy falling in love with Jack Black or being in <em>another</em> Leonardo DiCaprio movie (when's our chance?) Kate Winslet likes to school <strike>chumps</strike> her kids in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>. At least, that's what she recently told the celebrity watchers at <em>E!</em> during the SAG awards. <br /><br />Despite the presence of the more popular <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/bowling">bowling</a> minigame, Kate is a big fan of the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/tennis">tennis</a> and <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/boxing">boxing</a> bits, calling the overall package "fantastic." Just keep an eye on your kids and pets, Kate. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> is actually worth a bit of money. We know. We checked. Why? Well, we were thinking about how often we really play it when the idea for this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/wii-warm-up">Wii Warm Up</a> came to mind.<br /><br />So, what about you all? How do you feel toward <em>Wii Sports</em>? Have you gotten rid of your copy? Plan to now? This is one of those stories that pretty much can't be passed up, although it's not <em>actually</em> that surprising. Given the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/05/wii-sales-up-100-over-christmas-says-pachter/">sales</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/30/wii-doubles-december-sales-breaks-ps2s-all-time-record/">numbers</a> for the Wii, we basically expect to find one in the home of everyone who can safely afford one -- especially when children are present. Turns out that the Obama family is among the bajillion households to join in on the waggling. <br /><br />The president-elect used his newly-earned position of power to secure the elusive console for his daughters as a Christmas present, and he has since taken up <em>Wii Sports</em> as well. His bowling performance apparently eclipses his famously awkward <a href="http://politicalhumor.about.com/b/2008/04/02/barack-obamas-bowling-disaster.htm">real-life bowling</a> during the campaign.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/the-first-wii-obama-brings-video-games-to-the-white-house/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/obama-family-appoints-wii-to-tv-cabinet/">Obama family appoints Wii to (TV) cabinet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 10:53:00 EST. A retirement home in Ottawa, Ohio, was <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28544248/">recently robbed</a> for its Wii. Two women walked into the retirement home, seeking job applications, but ended up leaving with more than a job. They nabbed the home's Wii console. As one might imagine, the folks at the home enjoy playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=wii+sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>, particularly the <em>Bowling</em> and <em>Baseball</em> games. <br /><br />Thankfully, this story has a happy ending. Several of the home's inhabitants were able to identify the two women, and police were able to track them down and recover the Wii. <br /><br /><strong>See also: </strong><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/31/childrens-home-robbed-local-businessman-replaces-stolen-wii/">Children's home robbed, local businessman replaces stolen Wii</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/job-seekers-nab-wii-from-retirement-home/">Job seekers nab Wii from retirement home</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:19:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=super+mario+bros"><em>Super Mario Bros.</em></a> has been the best-selling game of all time for years now, but that throne may have been usurped by another Nintendo title: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>. According to VGChartz, <em>Wii Sports</em> has surpassed that coveted 40.24 million mark.<br /><br />We're keeping this a rumor because, uh, it's VGChartz. They're never too good about sourcing their stuff and, to tell the truth, we've only ever heard one person claim their data was correct (it was in our interview with 2D Boy here). It's not that we don't believe <em>Wii Sports</em> could top the original NES game, we're just skeptical of VGChartz.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/04/wii-sports-is-best-selling-game-of-all-time-according-to-vgchar/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/05/wii-sports-best-selling-game-of-all-time/">Wii Sports best-selling game of all time?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Jan 2009 16:00:00 EST.
