No longer a scrolling shooter with a frustrating isometric perspective, Zaxxon Escape is now a behind-the-back third-person game for iOS and Android.

With only a few screenshots and the teasiest of teaser trailers, it's difficult to determine just how this new game plays, except to say it's probably nothing like Zaxxon. The game is due "soon" on iPhone, iPad, and Android. Get your SegaScope 3-D glasses ready!
Zaxxon is Baxxon iOS and Android originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 19:30:00 EST. There's nothing flashy or particularly complex about Zaxxon, other than the difficulty of quickly ascertaining your altitude and relative safety in your immediate surroundings. Basically, you crash into stuff or get shot by stuff or run out of gas and then crash into stuff, as you can see in the latest episode of VC in Brief above. It's a tough life out there in space, gunning down countless unmarked ships, missile silos and cannons -- believe.

The original arcade version of Zaxxon is available on Virtual Console this week! Trust us: this is very exciting if you're old. However, as we like to do when this sort of thing pops up, we're offering this public service announcement: if you have either the PS2 Sega Genesis Collection disc or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, you already have this game!

Check out all the WiiWare, Virtual Console, and DSiWare offerings after the break.
Coinciding with that amazing Bit.Trip Runner trailer, its predecessor Bit.Trip Void is now avaiable on WiiWare, along with the authentically NES-style Mega Man 10! There's even a real retro game available on Virtual Console -- a pretty good one, at that.

The theme even extends to DSiWare, where you can get Dark Void Zero, a promotional game that outshines the game it was meant to promote. You can play it on the DSi XL, which was released in Europe today!
On Virtual Console, for example, Sega's isometric arcade shmup Zaxxon is the only offering. Similarly, there's just one WiiWare game, but it's Phoenix Wright!

DSiWare gets the cool Photo FIghter X, which lets you build fighting game characters from DSi camera snaps. More Paint By DS joins it, this time all about dogs; and in the requisite "puzzle game" positions are a new G.G. series entry and a Jupiter-developed game about rotating blocks to match colors.
The tactical espionage action progenitor has snuck into December's lineup, along with another November refugee, Yie Ar Koutei no Gyakushuu.

December will also see the arrival of Final Fight 3 for SNES, which features Guy and Haggar along with two new characters, all doing what they do best: punching people, eating garbage, and destroying lots of barrels. Of course, no Virtual Console schedule is complete without shmups, and December will see two: Ordyne, an adorable side-scroller from Namco, and Zaxxon, a classic Sega shooter with a confusing perspective. See the list after the break.

[Via Andriasang]

Continue reading Final Fight 3, Metal Gear headline Japanese Virtual Console lineup next month

Final Fight 3, Metal Gear headline Japanese Virtual Console lineup next month originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. These work really well because they aren't so busy that your icons get lost in the background, plus they look snazzy to boot. When's the last time you had an image from H.E.R.O. on your computer? What about Super Zaxxon? Dang, time to fire up MAME for some gaming.

Check out the whole set of eleven here, and decorate your desktop to your heart's content.
