I know a ten year old kid that would make a better lawyer than this turd.

Yep, it is Bill Gates fault that millions of parents don't give two shits what their kids watch. Way to go, Ace!

Seriously, the community as whole would be better served by never again posting anything to do with JT, other than his TIMELY DEMISE!!!

It's a bad thing he's not an elected official (god forbid if he were) ... if he was, you could at least circulate a recall petition to remove him from office.

The bad thing is also this ... elected or not, important and influential people listen to this cretin's ramblings.

Mr. Thompson ... you are now one of the reasons I am a Democrat. Because you use scare tactics. fearmongering, and misinformation against the gaming industry in general, I sincerely hope you suffer defeat after defeat until you finally are forced to leave us gamers alone and our industry alone. Either that or you're struck down by God, take your pick.

You've gotta hand it to him - the guy has balls.

Microsoft could buy and sell him a million times over and he's threatening a simple lawsuit? It's especially funny in light of the almost neverending stream of failure he's had introducing bills prohibiting the sale of games to minors into law. He has no legal precedent to stand on and he threatening a lawsuit on a megacorporation.

Yeah, good luck with that buddy. You'll have about as much success as you did with that Louisiana law you were so smug about.

Lol, I doubt Bill Gates is actually concerned, let alone keeps his eye over the xbox corner of his entire Microsoft Company. Maybe a memo or two, other than that, I see him at a golf meet with his best buddy, George Washington, A trillion of them, Going " Lol what the heck is a xbox 360?" Or Better yet, this is a goodway of reminding you all of Concerned- The rise and fall of Froman .

From Wikipedia:

In 1990, after his election loss, Thompson began a campaign against the efforts of Switchboard of Miami, a social services group of which Reno was a board member. Thompson charged that the group placed “homosexual-education tapes” in public schools. Switchboard responded by getting the Florida Supreme
Court to order that he submit to a psychiatric examination. Thompson did so and passed, and since then has stated on more than one occasion that he is “the only officially certified sane lawyer in the entire state of Florida.”

Not entirely relevant...but entirely hilarious.

Even if he's a wacko, he does have a good point. Why isn't it illegal to sell M rated games (or movies or music for that matter) to minors? There is evidence that violent games do affect people negatively. Why not enforce the ratings?

MrBlank, there's something called "legal interest". For the government to make a law enforcing the ratings, there would have to be concrete proof that violent videogames (or music, etc) lead to real-life violence. Or at least that the presence of violent media makes it more likely a child is going to present a harm to others.

Without such proof, it would be illegal (unconstitutional) for the government to interfere with private citizens' lives. The U.S. gov can enforce seatbelt laws because of the positive effects for citizens. They can enforce no-smoking laws in public areas because of the harm second-hand smoke presents to other citizens. There's no such connection with media violence.

At 4) I could have sworn that someone DID make a game about him. [Wikis] Well, it WAS about him, but He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was the PC and not a "victim" (for lack of a better word).

At 44) This makes me think of what I *think* was a line from Full Spectrum Warrior: "That's not balls, that's stupid!" (Said by one soldier watching another soldier run directly in front of a tank. Yes, a tank.) Forgive me if I'm wrong; it's been forever since I played that game, and I only went through it once (rental).

At 50) I find a great irony in the types of people who are giving games like Bully actual approval:

http://www.almenconi.com/reviews.php?art_id=720

Note: This is a CHRISTIAN website, which rates games based on content (language, violence, et al.), giving its approval. So Jack Thompson really has his work cut out for him (considering he cut ties with Tyndale House Publishing following the release of the PC RTS Left Behind: Eternal Forces) if he's trying to give the impression that Christians somehow have to be against all violent gaming (he calls himself a conservative Christian, but bigger government isn't conservative, and not all Christians are against violent gaming, even those that DO care about what's in their games).

At 51) Please accept my apologies on behalf of Jack Thompson ("for Jack Thompson, because Jack Thompson won't"--Penny Arcade). Not all conservatives, Christians, or people who are both, think like this man does.

Personally, I think that even if, by some oddball series of events, Jack Thompson did manage to convince the federal government to stop the sale of M-rated titles to minors (with or without their parents' permission), I'm not wholly convinced that would solve the problem.

There are a lot of games whose content is rather questionable or disturbing that aren't rated Mature (I wonder what he'd think of Fatal Frame ... has anyone here played it? I've heard it's scary as heck; also, a PC game called "Soulbringer" was so bloody that I'm surprised it was rated Teen), and there are a lot of Mature-rated games that are not only fun, but they really make you think (Deus Ex).

Besides, if I'm not mistaken, GTA2 was on GBC and PlayStation with a Teen rating. [Checks ESRB's website] Yep.

So it seems to me that the question here is content, not necessarily ratings (content may not be labeled, because the ESRB doesn't play games through in their entirety).

Besides, what do we do about games like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which was re-issued a Mature rating because of circumstances that were completely out of BethSoft's hands?

All of this "violence and video games" controversy has gotten very, very messy, ad nauseum.

God bless you all, anyway. Happy New Year. ^_^

I dont know if anyone else has mentioned this but I feel the need to comment. This Thompson guy should be aiming his energies at anti-gun lobbying in America, i honestly dont know anything about the guy, ill personally would rather attack computer game geeks than say the American National Rifle Assiocation imagine taking on an organisation where every member has a gun.

Anyway I digress I live in the UK and we have some gun crime but I can assure you that none of it has been done with legally owned firearms for a long long time and in comparison to the population of the UK I believe that we purchased as many copies of the GTA games as any country.

And in terms of retailers not selling M-rated games I think that you would find that most individuals working in retail stores take a certain amount of pleasure telling kids they can't have the next GTA game. I used to work for GAME Stores UK as a manager they had excellent policies in place about selling to minors, but the children usually convince their parents to come in and buy the Game for them and its usually the middle to upper class parents because where they might have brains they certainly dont have commonsense.

However this gave me great pleasure when i would tell the childrens parents about blow job sequences and heads exploding in Vice city, oh how I would laugh as they left my store with an embarrassed looks on their faces.

MS is doing everything it can to prevent minors under 17 to get M games. They also made a bus tour with the ESRB to educate people how to use the built in 360 parental controls and what they mean. MS policy also states that AU adult rated games are banned from there console. Right no there is no laws on ppl entering R movies or buying M games. Industry cleans itself out. Most retailers ID minors to buy games and DVD's that are Rated M or R respectivley. In the last nine months game inforcement went up in all retailers i've been to. (Gamestop,Eb games, Bestbuy, Circut City, Target, and Walmart) all card and follow the voluntary ESRB rules. A few months ago as a sixteen year old, I wanted to but a Xbox Official Magazine but they wouldn't sell it to me because the demo disc had one game rated M. Now I am 17 and I help my friends rated M video games when I go to the mall with them. P.S. somebody should chainsaw this motherfucker. Gears.

i love when people act all morally superior and think theyre better and have the right to tell us what is right for us and our children. they always come off as complete idiots who just want to control everyone and everything about everyones lives.
people like this just need to get laid and get a life.

JT this is still supposedly a FREE CAPITALIST COUNTRY people will buy and sell whatever they can. if theres a demand people will make it, done.

start preaching personal responsibility then people will take you seriously. i know thats a harder sell and makes you work actually rather than just scaring everyone. next youll be trying to convince people theres a boogie man to come get people if they buy GTA.

This guy's an idiot...

A) why is he only focusing on GTA? *Ah-Hem* Gears of War and Resistance, anyone? This guy is a moron, a complete and utter moron who believes that companies have direct control over sale of their product. Target best buy, target wal-mart, target..well..Target! I could never buy games at gamestop when I was 15 if it was M-rated, and I'm a manager there now who strictly enforces the ESRB within his employees. But back then? I could walk into my local Wal-Mart or Target, get them to grab the game out of the case and pay for it without them even giving me a second glance.

..This guy is just a jack-ass who loves his name in the news and the internet is the prime place for him to get the recognition he craves. Ignore him and you end the problem. Hell, start trying to correct him and make him focus on retailers, to where he's atleast getting his attention the smart way.

I'd almost think he's actualy working for microsoft. why else would he only attack them then to give the game an extra sales boost by making it controversial.
it's a mechanism he and microsoft should know very well: try to bann annything and it will become "cool", causing it to sell even better. only thing he's doing is generating more sales for Microsoft. And if he's not working for them, then he's doing it for free. Lucky Lucky microsoft, they'd better thank him for that
