PS3 60GB doesn't represent a price drop, it's a clearance sale
Anger, frustration, confusion, denial, shock ... these are all words that can be used to describe the emotional state felt by the gamer community after Sony went from officially announcing a price drop on Monday, to essentially making it all a moot point by Friday because the 60GB is being discontinued. The mainstream media still hasn't picked up on the story and we haven't seen anything from the Associated Press or Reuters* yet. You know, this may be considered a price drop, but the real phrase is "clearance sale."
That's what it is. We'll be right back to the $599 price we started at in a few months once the 60GB units sell, only with some "added value" thrown in (with a little something taken away). Is going back to the old price worth it to consumers for an extra 20GB and Motorstorm? Is that what Sony executives really think is going to move units at the magical $599 price? Of course, there is also the possibility that once the 60GB units sell out, the 80GB model will drop down to that price after Sony squeezes a little bit more cash out of having a premium model. If the 80GB takes the place of the 60GB the moment stock runs out, there will still be a PS3 model at the new $499 price.
As the story played out on Friday, there were many people at E3 scrambling to get what the real story was and comparing notes on the madness we had heard the night before. Most conversations regarding the subject started with, "There's no way it could be true." But here we are -- if the 80GB model doesn't receive a similar price drop, we'll be stuck with a new package for the PS3 at the old price of $599.
*Update: Reuters caught on and impresses with proper attribution.

Maybe becuase they dont want to wait and maybe because they want 5 free Blu_Ray movies. You can upgrade the HDD later or add a cheap exernal drive, when required. Again why wait?
Ren @ Jul 15th 2007 11:12AM
All the late posts about the price drop are correct. It's like the psp when they bundled stuff with the console (no price drop). Sony gets a bit of a cash/cost break by making you buy software and accessories bundled with a system. When there are enough sales, the price drops later on. The new bundle offer along with the price drop is still great. before the announcement, you could purchase a 599$ ps3 with no game/bundle. let's just say you dont get the 60gb option, you can still buy a 80GB model WITH 5 free movies and a game for $599 compared to what you can get before the announcement. Sony wouldn't offer an 80GB model as a stand alone for$599.99 with no movies and a game and still sell a 60GB model for $499(100 less). You can't really say 20GB = $100 retail with the games and movies useless to you when you got the option of buying a 60GB for $499.99. Consumer perception is sometimes wrong, but the electronics giant is definitely doing "some" things wrong to make people think the way they do. The media also doesn't help a whole lot either. But people are smart to assume Sony will likely drop the 80GB to $499.99 in the future as a standalone. Devalueing the ps3 is the last thing Sony wants people to think.

This is about the most sensible comment I've seen on hear. Of course there going to discontinue the 60gig, because they know everyones bitched about having 2 skus.
As soon as the 60gig runs out (probably around the holidays or early '08) they'll drop the 80gig down to $499. Simple as that.
Kylearan @ Jul 15th 2007 11:50AM
Wouldn't surprise me if the reason why no one could get Sony's story straight is because THEY hadn't gotten it straight.
Instead, they threw a little tidbit about a "price drop" out into the Internet-ether to see what would come back. I highly doubt the 80GB model will drop to $499 once the 60GB model sells out -- and the extra 20GB plus Motorstorm is hardly worth $100 MINUS the Emotion Engine.
Pretty clear Sony has no idea what it's doing at the moment.
Kcen @ Jul 15th 2007 11:59AM
Wait till the fights at stores start.
This ps2 game runs on my friends ps3 but not mine, mine must be broken take it back.
Alex @ Jul 15th 2007 12:20PM
To clarify.. i'm no fanboy.... i do not own any latest gen system .. this comment is based solely on my opinion and my speculation
i think the "clearnance sale" only tells 1/2 of the story.. remember a little while ago analysis says that it is likely that there will be another price drop by holiday season? and Sony claims that there an ample supply of 60gb that will last until a "foreseeable" future?
i think if you link those two together it makes sense.. i believe that once the 60gb "runs out" probably in a few months (which leads to around holiday season).. the 80gb will be drop in price to 499 (predicted price drop)... i dont believe that the price drop announce couple weeks was solely to get rid of 60gb but set as a final price point...
like some people have suggested, if Sony announce that the 80gb will drop to 499 then no one will buy the 60gb that they are trying to get rid of .. keep in mind that end production of 60gb was leaked information in the beginning..
as for the EE.... if they can without it thats fine.. i guess it will be like 360 with software rendering.. further updates may increase the backward compatibility list like 360 is doing .. it worked for MS.. and i bet thats probably what Sony is doing
Ian Von Porter @ Jul 15th 2007 1:11PM
They will sell the 60gb until inventory runs out, then the 80gb will be by itself until xmas shopping season. At that point, the 80gb will sell by itself for $400-450 while the 120gb version will come bundled with a game, a few BDs, and will sell for $550-600.
They will need a standalone SKU.. so, the current 80gb bundle wont cut it. Cnce the 60gb runs out, they will sell the 80gb alone for the $499 price point.. they will maybe have a bundle for $599.
Alex @ Jul 15th 2007 1:18PM
hmm.. i didnt kno there was news about 120gb.. not trying to bash on you.. but is that just pure speculation? Correct me if i'm wrong, but S. Korea is currently getting the 80gb only right? i dont doubt that a new 120gb MAYBE in the line somewhere..but i dont think it will be as soon as x'mas season... personally.. i think thats a bit soon to push out another version.. lets just hope that they'll keep the 80gb as a SKU for awhile
Alex @ Jul 15th 2007 12:44PM
oye... why so angry? did someone piss you off before you write this post? haha..
Squirrel3D @ Jul 15th 2007 5:21PM
I guess being passionate about the iusse is a crime to you eh? You shouldn't even talk when you don't even own any of the current gen consoles.
Alex @ Jul 15th 2007 6:05PM
hmm.. Squirrel3D .. i didnt kno that u have to own a current gen console to post on this blog? maybe i'm deciding which console is best for me to buy? .. maybe although i don't have the money from mommy like you to get consoles, i still care about the gaming community .. why is it any of your business who post here or not?
i think what i am trying to say is that people like you (Squirrel3D) are the people who cannot communicate with others in a professional, logical, and civil manner... my suggestion: maybe you need to grow up just a little
"screaming" and "yelling" on the internet is pointless.. everyone is brave on the internet because there are no consequences
Alex @ Jul 15th 2007 6:06PM
There is a fine line between being passionate and just being pointless angry.. Squirrel3D you crossed it
hotnutz @ Jul 15th 2007 1:12PM
lol... you guys are worried about a price fluctuation for the PS3. How about this news? A TOTAL XBOX 360 recall (all the EBs in Australia) from a decent news site?
http://kotaku.com/gaming/two-weeks/eb-games-australia-issues-total-360-recall-278562.php
I guess paying $400 for a crap console that fails 30% of the time is better than paying $600 for a console that works and has WAY more features. I quite like the fact there are tons of people out there because it gives me the hope that I can open a business with crappy equipment/software and you will buy it up if I put some Halo logo on it. haha...
rask @ Jul 15th 2007 3:54PM
If you had bothered to read the article, you would know that this only applies to 360's that had been sent to Aussie retail that had a batch of defective 20GB hard drives. This is in no way related to the RROD, the extended warrenties or any other 360 issues.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 15th 2007 1:45PM
"There's no way it could be true."
Those conversations were when the news was they would run out of 60GB units by August 1. And Sony has said this is not true, so we were all correct.
blooh @ Jul 16th 2007 1:37AM
the 60 ps3 is still advertised as 599 at the gamestop i walked by yesterday, lol
Icarus @ Jul 15th 2007 2:31PM
I'd rather wait until the 60gb models sell out and then talk. Sony said, they'll evaluate the market. If they're really going to stop producing the cheaper model and go with a single $600, it would be really stupid of them. Can't they see how the sales skyrocketed after the price cut? Price is the only thing what's keeping people from buying PS3s right now. From fanboys to casual gamers, they want a PS3 because in everyway they know[or believe] that it's superior.
DS1O9 @ Jul 15th 2007 3:14PM
clearance sale!
PSN:ummfada @ Jul 15th 2007 4:00PM
Think you rekcuskcoc the BUNDLED 80GB will be $599
Hmmmm? What price will an unbundled 80GB PS3 be with the cancelation of 60GB? Take a guess ssaemal.
Brad Lee @ Jul 15th 2007 4:00PM
Sony should have done one of two things. Either 1) be a responsible company and come out and say right away that the price cut is only temporary, or 2) be an asshole company and wait until the holidays for the "temporary price drop" and just say it was a limited time holiday deal.
I don't really care one way or another. I thought $400 was expensive for a game console, but I sucked it up for a 360. Sorry, but I ain't doing that again. That means PS3 has to be less than $400 or I ain't buying it. And $500-$600? Sony can kiss my ass. I'll buy a whole new gaming PC before I shell out that much for a video game console.
PunchPudding @ Jul 15th 2007 4:43PM
This is how I understand the situation: Sony announced a price cut that developers and consumers alike have been hoping for. They basked in the attention and praise (and sales too) that followed for a few days. Then they cryptically and quietly reveal to the press (confirming, then disconfirming, then confirming again) that it's not a real price drop-- hoping that everyone whose interest level went up still ends up buying one later. It's a very "car salesman-ish" tactic, though there's nothing wrong with that.
I think that nobody is reacting angrily to it (well, maybe a few who were planning to pick one up this holiday) but we are reacting the same way we would whenever we can see through questionable (or unfavorable, if you like) corporate business tactics masquerading as "generosity". We're "calling them out" on their latest little trick, we're allowed to do that aren't we?
kevin @ Jul 15th 2007 5:25PM
lets see, the 60gb ps3 was 599 before. Now it is 499, get over it. you can try to call it something else but it is a price drop.
Joe P @ Jul 15th 2007 6:40PM
Is it just me or is Sony really REALLY bad at E3? This is the second time that they've started E3 on a high note and then ended it on a low one. Someone in their PR department needs to be shot.
Paviel @ Jul 16th 2007 12:28AM
Just when we all though that SON¥ had learned its lesson about prices and consumers...
This stuff convinces me that we'll never see a PS3 priced below $499. I'd love to be proven wrong as much as the next guy, but I'm becoming cynical. Speculate all you want about a price drop of more than $100 for the 80gb model, but I won't believe it until I see it.
And none of us will see it until the 60gb units are all sold out, which will probably take a while...
Consolcwby @ Jul 16th 2007 5:25AM
Erm... I did see somewhere that the PS3 80gig (non-bundled edition) would retail for $499.99 once the 60gigs sold out. That the $600 one was for the bundle (which includes a second controller and a game)... =o
so why all this fuss if the $500 price point isn't going to be going away?... o=
Some people act as if a 'price cut' means something other than 'cutting the price'...
lawrence @ Jul 16th 2007 7:09AM
Microsoft selling defective systems to there fans looks just like the price of 80gb ps3 to me .oh yeah they just repair it for the extra !!!!200$!!!!.you xbox fans are just stupid because you bought the 360 first and you cant get your money back if you wanted it back .so the no change for it.when you sell the 360 you only get back 30% off of it and sony might be getting gears of war 2 any way so Microsoft fans might convert just to play gears 2 and ut3 which might be a ps3 exclusive so don't keep quiet now about Microsoft losing 3rd party exclusive .when sony were having trouble with the exclusive you microsoft fans prayed that they would get all of sony exclusive but now what games your gonna be playing this year exclusive on the 360 ...my..katamari!!!!sounds like you got the shitty exclusives any way ..thats a micrsoft ass fuck.sony pissed on bill gates for showing off all his money until he got broke
Bullseyetm @ Jul 16th 2007 1:47PM
I am a little confused at the outrage in this news story. So, before E3 you could buy a 60GB PS3/Blu-Ray player for $600. After E3, you can buy an 80GB
PS3/Blu-Ray player w/ 5 free Blu-Ray Discs and Motorstorm for $600. Like you weren't going to buy a $60 game with your PS3 anyway, or try out that new Blu-Ray player with a $30 movie purchase.
Maybe the problem isn't that Sony is pulling a "bait-and-switch", but that they couldn't control the message. The gaming media proclaimed this a "price-cut", when in actuality it's something of a "SKU-shift". This also leaves open the possibility of a price drop before the holidays once the 60GB sells out. Would anyone complain with a $500 80GB PS3 w/ Motorstorm in 3 months? Depends on how well the 60GB sells at $500.
Honestly, this was a move I expected from Microsoft, switching the "Premium" down to $300 and packaging the Premium with pack-ins (Gears of War, extra controller, etc) at $400. When that happened, I was planning on jumping on the 360 train.
Thaddeus @ Aug 18th 2007 10:49PM
I've had my PS2 for years and its never failed. And between all my videos, demos, and Linux my 60gb is getting close to full. I wouldn't mind an extra 20gb right about now :P
