Microsoft was offering the most awful BC, very few of their tiles were avaiable from the beginning (and still they do)...

Sony did offer a great BC from the beginning, they tried something and then decided to change routes and do software emulation, they are taking a bit, but they'll catch up, besides, if you really want BC you can just go get a 60GB unit...but then again, by your comment I think you wouldn't want a PS3 :]

I'm still looking for comments from all of the Sony fanboys who were criticizing the 360's backwards compatibility as half asses while praising the PS3's superior hardware enabled backwards compatibility.

*crickets*

Yeah, thought so.

Well at least SONY is continuously working on the backward compatibility, Microsoft just gave up.

As I said, with future firmware releases the backward compatibility will improve.

@Night Elve:

Err MS still updates the Back Compat list. The last update was on July 2007.

Face it, Aside from the 20 and 60GB units out there, MS and Sony now offers the same in regards to Back Compat. MS is this way cause the hardware in the 360 is different from the original xbox and incompatible, Sony does this to save a couple of bucks on manufacturing costs.

To translate all that, that's only one game effecting problem on the list with Godai: Elemental Force out of 10 PS2 games I checked. The PSOne titles aren't so lucky, with possible game effecting problems in 4 titles, two of them top games rather than the PS2's only 1 game effecting problem from a rather shitty game.

If that says anything PSOne emulation isn't the best, but the PS2 titles are pretty much covered.

Well I'm an owner of an 80GB PS3 and every PS2 title I've thrown at it so far works great, Sony is doing a much better job with BC than Microsoft has, so as far as im conserned, this isn't a problem, look at how cheap the PS2's are, just go out and buy one if you need to play a PS2 game so badly.P.S Im doing this from my PS3's Internet browser! XD I love this thing!

You can use your crazy internet browser to look up the price of a PS2 and find that it's more than just "let me run out and grab one cuz I wanna play a game".

P.S. My computer also has an internet browser.

why not do youself a favor and stop being a fucking sony fanbot. allthe games they picked are major ps2 games. so how does it equate to them being biased, except that you dont like them saying anything about sony?

Like i said most of my games dont work, and thats a pretty fucking big deal. It eally doesnt matter how many work on ps3, it matters if the biggest ones do.

so you can suck my ass for all I care sheppy, cause i happen to own 3 of the 4 games they listed as wella s 24 otehr ps2 games and 12 ps1 games (4 of which say they dont have problems).

Jesus christ, do you see anyone attacking your beloved sony? no we are just talking about the list. just be a sensible fanboy and say "well at least its better then 360's list"

I'm still undecided on which next-gen console to get. Right now I'm leaning toward 360 but that changes frequently. Backwards compatibility does matter to me because I still have PS2 games I didn't finish and my PS2 has started scratching discs so it'll probably have to be retired soon. All that being said the PS3 software BC is obviously not as good as the Emotion Engine but it's still LEAGUES above 360's BC.

Also, found this - Devil May Cry 3 (original and special edition). "At a specific point during gameplay, the user's character is unable to progress." Doesn't that pretty much make the game completely broken? Also, Devil May Cry 1 isn't listed for 80 GB.

My personal top 5 PS2 games came out like this:

God Hand: No problems

Okami: No problems

Odin Sphere: When the user attempts to create new game save data, a message indicating that all previous save data files are corrupted appears.

Psychonauts: Throughout various FMV sequences, the title performs at approximately 90% of the normal performance speed.

Raiden III: No problems

Being that I haven't beat Odin Sphere yet (I'm slowly making my way through it), I guess there's no way I'm buying an 80gb PS3 anytime soon.
But at least God Hand and Okami work. I still play those games pretty often.

Some kids on the IGN board were trying to claim I was wrong that about 80GB having poor backwards compatibility. I linked them to this article and the sony database and they still wouldn't change their opinion. I guess they're just stubborn 80GB owners. I'm glad I got the 60GB, even if I don't use the backward that much, it's still worth more to me than an extra 20GB. Plus, you can get the console + motorstorm for cheaper than the 80GB bundle so it really is just a matter of emotion engine vs 20GB.

I have a PAL PS3. The BC isn't poor at all. It's not perfect but even games with issues are generally playable. And lots of games don't have issues or if they do they're extremely minor.

Well, from looking at the databases on the UK and US sites, it's very poor. I wouldn't want to put up with the described issues while playing a game. I haven't personally used one though, I bought the 60GB.

This is another reason i wanna get the 60 gig, 20 gigs extra minus the EE chip for an extra 100$? Really not worth it. I would reccomend you guys to get the 60 gig with EE and shove in an 120 gig for about less than a 100$. Plus you get an extra 60 gig hdd which you can encase in a hdd case and sue it as a portable disk. You can plug it into the ps3's usb and bam 180 gigs. All this with the emotion engine.

Seems I am the only person VERY pleased with the quality of software emulation of PS1/Ps2 games on my Euro PS3.

I have about 80 games, every single one works fine, and only 2 titles out of 80, I can spot anything even remotely resembling dodgy emulation (Gran Turimo 4, graphic corruption block on the L/H side f the screen sometimes, and a couple of flicking glitches on Crazy Taxi).

I think before the Xbots come here and throw stones, I think they sould consider the laughable emulation that Microsoft offers.

I'd like to know, from actual console owners, do you actually use BC? I mean when I got my 360 I started a new 'Jade Empire' and 'Sid Meier Pirates!' just for the sake, and because I only had one 360 game... but now i've got 9 or 10 games and all my xbox 1 games are in the basement in a box with an inch of dust.

It seems like BC sometimes factors a lot into the purchase of a system when after a month or two you'll probably never use it again.

I mean Goldeneye I played for hours a day years ago, and maybe once every 5 years I'll hook it up, realize it hasn't aged as well as i'd hoped, and return it to a box. I'd rather play bioshock.

Am I alone in this?

Damn, everyone is spoiled over this. You young'uns are lucky to have all this backwards compatibility stuff. Back in the day, when we upgraded our NES and Master Systems, we just had to keep them around with the new one. Be happy these companies are wasting time and millions of dollars to give you the ability to play the old games for the 6 months it takes before you get bored of them and never look at last gen again.

The only reason they even HAVE BC is because Microsoft and Sony know perfectly well their hardware is awful and will not last 20 years like an NES or Genesis will.
