Nintendo stated Super Mario Galaxy sold a half million units during its first week in the US. According to George "packing up his office" Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vp of marketing, Super Mario Galaxy has the strongest first week sales of any Mario game ever.
The critical acclaim would seem to say that Super Mario Galaxy deserves all the sales it's getting. We also know that Galaxy sold 250k units its first week in Japan. Oh Mario, you just know how to print money.

Right, flame! If anything, Nintendo used PH to prove that a traditional action/puzzle game like Zelda can be done with ONLY touch controls.
People also seem to forget that many of Nintendo's flagship titles are also used as proof of concept for their hardware. MP3/Wiisports/MarioGalaxy for Wii, PH for DS.

"If a game was 100% the same all of the time, it would get stale."
That's really ironic that you said that about PH's controls, considering that you're simultaneously defending a Zelda title (all Zelda titles are essentially retellings of the same story/legend).
"YOUR CRAZY!"

Have you played Phantom Hourglass? If not, then you should not be talking about it.
Phantom Hourglass felt like no other Zelda before it, except maybe Windwaker. The story was completely different, the game play was completely reinvented.

Silent Xenocide, Have you played Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn? Nintendo did not change the controls, they didn't think it would add to the experience.

@Flame: No I haven't. I haven't really played any Fire Emblem games before so I don't think I would know whats going on.
@Crono: Yea I know, Galaxy isn't a bad game or anything. Maybe I just haven't had enough time with it. I only have 3 stars to be honest.

Bingo. Mario Galaxy sales will likely blow past Halo, much like Wii blew past the 360. I'm not saying that for sure, just a prediction. Why compare opening numbers as if they will not continue to sell?
Posted: Nov 21st 2007 11:12AM (Unverified) said
Why are half the posts in here about Halo?
If you need to compare Mario to something, how bout something remotely timely, like Assassin's Creed or Uncharted (which VGcharts has at 25K for last week, aha)

I saw just as many commercials for Mario as I did for halo. and really, what else are Wii owners gonna buy?

Just out of curiosity, what shows have you been watching? I saw zero commercials for Galaxy, except on Youtube when Joystiq posted it. All I've seen is some commercials advertising the Wii and it's Mii and wii Sports systems.
Halo 3 was everywhere, completely inescapable.

Ok lets put it this way. Halo 3 for the west is like Dynasty Warriors for the East. They sell well, but the game? Not saying much.
Oh and Vidikron, stop fucking nitpicking. I have been playing games since I was 3 starting with the NES and you my friend are one of those new jaded as fuck gamers who should be shot. Fucking 8 year olds can play Super Mario Galaxy and beat it levels without losing a life. Just because you suck at a game does not mean that it is broken. Stop blaming the game people.
Oh and for Mr. "Buttons Work 100% of the time", I have a list of horrible games that will prove you wrong. 50 Cent Bulletproof being one of them....

It's nice to see a game get sales on it's own merit and not hype. No Mario Game Fuel or Cat Helmets!

Mario Game fuel would rock. I remember when there was Mario soda. The Mario and Yoshi flavors were awesome. Peach tasted like battery acid.

honestly is a good number of copies sales, if you count that nintendo do not use many publicity for the game.
Not like the brutal 3 millions of copies sale in the first week of Halo 3 and the 5 millions worldwide but we know that for make a million you have to invest two in ads.
This Mario game is my only reason for get a Wii.

Smash Bros. is a different beast entirely from Marvel Vs. Capcom.
MvC(2) is more like a traditional fighting game (life meter, no ring outs), but with some great team concepts. Every character has a mile-long list of combos and moves.
Smash Bros. is barely traditional. Simply pummeling your opponent won't work (unless you're in Stamina Mode). Character movesets are much more simple. Etc.

89 stars in and having played and beaten every Mario game except Sunshine, this is the best one yet. All the best element from the entire Mario porfolio rolled into a great game. If only the camera worked all the time this game would be just about touching perfect.

absolute truth.
sunshine got the bad press because it was the successor to mario 64....just like how windwaker (another great game in its own rite) got the same poor treatment since it came after OoT and majora...
both sunshine and windwaker have some great experiences wrapped up in them. Sadly some people might not see them

I find the concept of a Wii owner who is aware of Super Mario Galaxy and consciously chooses not to buy it... curiously infuriating.

Man every time nintendo does well you see it, fanboys just seem to line up to cry online. To all the people here talking about the haloz and MS. Hmmm seems MS wants in on Nintendo casual buck. I wonder why since the haloz did so well? Maybe because that even with Halo they can't seem to go past the Wii.
Now if MS can make more money off casual gamers, with out high cost towards the hardcore do you think they will still cater? Awww of course they will this is MS we are talking about they are nothing but upstanding when it comes to business.
Sweat it out fanboys know that Game companies don't care about you but a profit. You sit online talking about what is a fad and what isn't you are not even a blip on the radar you are a pebble in front of a tank; insignificant. Your hate your malice towards, Sony, Ms, or Nintendo means nothing to them.
I remember when I was sega die hard, I made a promise not to buy Konami games. Because of Castlevania man I showed them didn't I that business is done now! Even then I knew it would do nothing but make myself feel better, I have kept that vow till today. Did I flood every Castlevania post with "DEATH TO KONAMI" no. Did I crap on anything they created being a soar loser no. Why because I am an adult.
You don't like the WII, that is a conscious decision stick with it, stop hassling others, same goes with sony and MS. If you can't debate a topic with out bias, then your school failed you.

Best friggin game I've played in such a long time.
This year has been a dissapointment for me. Prime 3, Phantom Hourglass, Halo 3. Okok basically everything on all systems. But Galaxy. Sweet jesus it's like a golden star floating above some murky crappy planet.
The first game I've played that compelled me to play more, the first game since the N64 that makes me want to replay it again.

The ONE SINGLE THING that everyone seems to overlook is not that
"HALO WOULDN'T HAVE SOLD AS MUCH WITHOUT THE HUUUUGE ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN"
Because given the hardcore install base, it was a guaranteed seller.
What people seem to miss is that MARIO WOULD HAVE benefited from massive advertising. If the Wii is a casual system, most of those casuals wouldn't bother checking game stores, or online gaming news to see when the new mario came out. It would be almost solely up to whether they walked past a store and saw it there.
If the ad campaign for mario was as extensive as halo, things would be pretty different. Not for Halo, but for Mario it would have boosted sales HUUUUUGE. All the people who wouldn't know otherwise....all the kids who would see it on TV and go "i wannnt ittt" ...damn nintendo, this couldve been huuuuge

Hey, it's Mario, what do you expect? :)
I wonder how Europe did, it's been almost a week now.
And seriously, I gotta play it more, Earthbound is addicting stuff.
