The nega-review just put into eloquent words what I've come to think of the whole series. Years ago, I had missed out on Metal Gear Solid and, with all the excitement surrounding the series, I knew as a gamer I needed to love it, too, so I played the original PS1 game, MGS2, and the MGS3 special edition to completion.

Reflecting on these experiences, I have concluded that the series, and if I can say without too much offense, even Kojima himself, don't deserve anywhere near the praise or attention they get. The nega-review could have been describing any Metal Gear game. All that stuff is there on purpose, and not because of technical limitations or because of a one-time bad call that they learned from, no: Kojima thinks it's fabulous the way it is, so I have to agree to disagree with him and Metal Gear as a whole.

It's not for everyone. So what if it's not for you? There are plenty of people who love things that you apparently despise. Get over yourself. The whole,"I needed to love it, too," argument just makes you sound like an idiot. Opinions aren't crated equally and thank God there are games that are created with enough integrity not to be made with the lowest common denominator in mind. And why would you have to love anything based on the opinions of others? Don't you think for yourself?

"It's not for everyone. So what if it's not for you?"

Nothing. That is why I said I'll just have to agree to disagree with the game.

"There are plenty of people who love things that you apparently despise."

I know that. And I don't despise it.

"Get over yourself."

Meaning what? Love the series? Stop thinking my own opinion matters? Do I think that?

"The whole,"I needed to love it, too," argument just makes you sound like an idiot."

It's not an argument. I said that to illustrate my willingness to appreciate the series and the absence of negative preconceptions.

"Opinions aren't created equally"

What does that even mean? Did I infer that they were?

"and thank God there are games that are created with enough integrity not to be made with the lowest common denominator in mind."

So you're saying Metal Gear is too high-brow for me to appreciate.

"And why would you have to love anything based on the opinions of others? Don't you think for yourself?"

You're saying my lack of appreciation of Metal Gear is caused by my lack of individuality? Or since that doesn't make sense, are you saying that because my initial interest in the series came from the abundance of glowing reviews and testimonials, I'm a fool?

I'm going to disagree with you on this one.

Heh heh, going by this "nega-review", MGS4 sounds *identical* to MGS2. And perfectly explains why I've never understood all of the hype and excitement surrounding MGS4.

No when youve played the other 3 games to completion and every review you read for MGS4 sounds like every review for the last 3 of them, im pretty sure I can conclude that this nega review reflects my opinions perfectly. Im not going to torture myself with something I know I wont like just because.

This is why MGS is a ground breaking franchise
Its main purpose in this universe is to separate posers from real gamers, and it does it in a best way possible.
Go online, or to your friends party, and you will quickly discover that true gamers know Metal Gear. They know the story (the basics at least) the know the gameplay and they know all the crazy Sh*t that has happened in each game over the years. And their opinion of the game can be broken down into two categories. They either Love it, or Hate it.
However, the people who are not part of the gaming community, but try to pretend like they are hardcore gamers (because they played 3 hours of SSBB at their friend's house last sunday) will stare at you with a blank expression when you ask them what they think about the upcoming MGS title.
I think these reviews prove my point, because there is a large consitency of companies giving this either a 10/10 (IGN, Gamepro, N4G, PSM..) or an 8/10 (1up, EGM...).
These reviews are not necessary when it comes to MGS games, because the players already know if they will like it or not.

Uh.. what? So you're saying that Hideo Kojima is trying to make a game that divides its player base in half, where one half spouts crazy convoluted gibberish and the other spouts bad word-of-mouth, driving sales down?

Sony wants to sell as many games as possible -- just look at the crazy advertising push they've been making to try and match GTAIV and Halo 3. Hideo was given, what was it, almost a thousand developers and millions of dollars.. only to make a controversial game?

Also, I don't like your tone about "real gamers". My grandmother could kick your ass at Wii Sports, because she plays it almost every damn day to stave off boredom and general senility. But because you're playing a higher-budget, convoluted mess of a game, you're suddenly a better human being than her.

Sorry, some people like to enjoy their games. What a novel idea.

I like it. Love the story, love the graphics, love the game play. It really isn't as immediate as Call of Duty or God of War. It's more of an interactive novel where grand themes are presented linearly, while the player partakes in intermittent action. The fact that it doesn't jibe well with a large number of players is a testament to what it's trying to accomplish, and nothing about its ambitions could rightly be regarded as main-stream.

It's the height of stupidity to adhere to this "one game fits all" mentality. While the FPS players are indulged to no end, it's games like MGS4 that keep gamers like me coming back for more.

Yesterday I got a wild hair and spent a few minutes trying to find the bundle around town. I am glad it was sold out, as I would have been pretty ticked for spending 500 bones on a game that sounds like I would have ended up not liking.

I was a huge fan of MGS2, but very disappointed in 2. I thought the game was too short, the controls old Gen, and way too many cut scenes (Though they where beautiful)

However I buy games to mostly game, if I want to watch a movie, I watch a movie. Mass Effect Did a perfect balance of Cut Scenes, Game Play and has an amazing storyline. It is easily one of my favorite games of all time.

I completed the game on thursday, i managed to get it a day early from play.com pre order. it wasn't meant to come a day early but ithey posted in on tues to make sure i got it by thurs and i got it on wednesday.

Personally I think it's the best game i've ever played, better Orcana of time or Bioshock and I LOVE those games. It all comes down to a love it or hate it. I LOVE the long cutscenes, I loved every single metal gear released (canon). I'm not a fan of Valves interactive cutscenes personally i mean I love half life and portal etc. but I like the long break just to listen etc. I can understand why someone wouldn't like it but I love it.

I have the summer to watch cutscenes, and I basically get off on batshit-crazy plots (Go Stephen King!). So, MGS4 is a game I would want to play, then. Only I never finished MGS2... meh, whatever, read the Wikipedia article.

For some reason, I actually liked the gunplay in MGS3. This may be because my method of "sneaking" was to set up a bunch of claymores everywhere, fire a few rounds into the sky, and kill everyone. Then I would "sneak" over their bodies. It has worked for every MGS game so far, and I see no reason for it to work any less well this time 'round. So for me, I guess this still is a good reason to buy the PS3.

Although I do get very annoyed when modern combat games make faux-realistic stuff... but that's not a complaint most people have, I expect.

Can we please now collectively tell AOLJoystiq to go fuck itself? I'm really tired of reading a bunch of negatives for games I know will be good. They did it for GTA 4 and I wouldn't have noticed most of it's flaws (albeit tiny ones) if it wasn't for Joystiq. Please make sure this crap is not seen by the masses, thank you.

And in case this needs to be clarified, I do not even own a PS3 I'm just a big MGS fan and am having a hard time right now justifying a $400 pricetag for a $60 game.

These are not the rants of some insane PS3Fanboy, that blog is already owned by AOLJoystiq.

Wow. I think this is the longest commented thread I've seen on here.

Personally? I love it. I love the cut scenes, how long they are and what they do, though, I do agree that I wish I could particpate in some of them, and more than a few are completely fucking stupid.

However, anyone who's played a Metal Gear game before knew what they were getting into, the cutscenes have always been long, sometimes without reason!

Metal Gear Solid 2 is the prime example. One of the times when you save, if you sit through it, takes about 5 minutes of just Raiden and Rosemary talking about their relationship.

Well, I'm about to start act 4, I'll probably have my first run through the game done by tonight...and then I'll start all over again, redoing the same difficulty just so I can get extra items, and then when I'm done that, I'll move onto the next difficulty.

I just enjoy a good convoluted story I suppose. Then again, I read the entire Wheel of Time series in a week, so I have the patience to sit through anything.

you know why i love this game.

its made for the fan, they dont give a crap if a casual gamer doesnt like it, they never created the game for them in the first place.

iv completed the game in 19 hours, not very well but completed on solid normal none the less and i bloming loved it.

the last cutscene is long, but oh well, you know your not going to play after that so you just skip its so simple, i watched it to finish off the story.

the 10 minute gameplay 20 minute cutscene is complete BS. the game starts and it goes from about 5 minutes of cutscene to a minute of gameplay to give a quick breif of moving around. then you get a 1 minute cutscene and about 1 minute of gameplayto show that your aiming for stealth, you then have a 3 minutes cutscene with 10 minutes of stealthy gameplay and then a very immersive cutscene.

i played the heart out of this game, and the second i finished i went straight onto load and boss hard to start a new game, i enjoy it that much.

i also like how this game knows its a game, none of this acting real stuff, and then funny comments to contradict itself, "this is real life not some fantasy game"

i found the story telling good, and the cutscenes very immersive, dont like them skip its not hard to do.

thing is if you like this game, theres a big chance youll like the other games, even if you thought you dont. the shooting is great, the technique is a steep learning curve and the dumbing down is no where to be found, its pure MGS action, dont like it, Kojima dont care, and selling 1.3 millions copies in 2 days would you?

i can't believe what i'm hearing. cutscenes? you're gonna cry about cutscenes? why don't you stick to pac man. this game is so beyond just a videogame, it's an experience unlike anything before it. just the sound alone is enough to put it above any game i can recall. name one game that has PERFECT graphics. YOU CAN'T. this game knocked it out of the park and is so above and beyond anything that has come before it on ANY console. you all hear for weeks prior that there were long cutscenes so why are you crying now? if you're too slow to follow the story then obviously this game isn't for you.

this game has good graphics, but as far as the ps3 goes, i'd have to say heavenly sword had better graphics.

and the cutscenes in this game are just...unbearable.

the cutscenes don't really flow. to make a simple point such as "you are my son", takes at least 15-20 minutes.
i'm a fan of mgs, but i was really disappointed with mgs4.

The problem with most of the reviews is that they take into account just 1 playthrough.

I thought it was hard, albeit game was good but not perfect, now I'm on my 4th playthrough on The Boss Extreme.

You don't realize how good the game is until the 2nd playthrough, because on the first one you are trying not to get spotted, even though most of us end with hundreds of alerts.

But, why would people select NORMAL difficulty when there is EASY?, dunno...NORMAL is HARD for a beginner.

Basically, on the second playthrough you skip videos, some of them you watch, but you skip them to play, THAT IS WHERE YOUR LEARN THE WORD HARD and that the game is not that short, or that easy.

When you get to the point where you can finish the game in less than 5 hrs you know the game, and CAN make a review.

YOUR FIRST PLAYTHROUGH in METAL GEAR SOLID 4 IS A MOVIE, THE SECOND AND LATER ONES ARE YOUR GAME, and THEN YOU HAVE METAL GEAR ONLINE.

P.S. And no this is no "Casual Gamer stuff", Brownish and grayish colors all around? YES B/C ITS SAYS UNDER THE LOGO TACTICAL ESPIONAGE ACTION...you want pink and baby blue, go play viva piƱata or locoroco, thats like complaining because Master Chief is Green instead of Lavander or Fuchsia.
