"odds of that last event occuring [sic] are approximately one-in-a-thrillion"

Wait, isn't that the same odds the 360 had of selling out in Japan until a few weeks back?

Great. The world ends before I get to play Dead Space AND my 360 RROD on me this past Friday. It's amazing we can build such a complicated contraption while my simple video game console is crapping out.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think this'll end like the Instrumentality from End of Evangelion.

To put it in the simplest terms possible, they are looking for the missing element that makes everything work the way it does.

Hopefully they've prepared for unforeseen circumstances.

They aren't colliding particles yet, just doing test runs.

Pretty exhilarating, this accelerating. Should we start the looting? Surely I could explain that I thought it was my only chance to enjoy that 52" Bravia, so that's why I smashed in the window at the Best Buy with the stolen FedEx truck and absconded away with one? Not gonna fly? Oh well. I shall go out with a whimper then, probably watching 'Top Chef' or something.

I wonder what a black hole consuming Earth as seen from a satellite looks like in 1080p? No need to turn up the bass on the surround sound though, because you will probably feel it.

While I don't believe this would end the world, it still pisses me off that a bunch of stuff shirts gets to play Russian roulette with humanity. I say we lock them all in a room with a coked up Vietnamese hooker and see who doesn't get their wang cut off.

Am I the only one who remembers the video game Out of this World? (known as Another World to some and is one of Hideo Kojima's favorite all time games he didn't make) The kid was testing a particle accelerator, which is what this atom smasher is suppose to be, and a lightning bolt hit it while it was in a testing mode, then it transports him to... well another world.

This could happen here.

Remembering the intro, the description mentioned of the real life device reminds me of the brief description of the in game one.

Again, maybe I'm the only one who remembers this game to know what's going to happen when they run it. :)

Yeah, I thought of that too when I first saw it. Now that we're two, we can take out the beast without a problem.

If we value humanity, we should have Microsoft, not the scientists, operate the Large Hadron Collider.

They have, by far, vastly more experience in dealing with rings of death.

Or we could have Sony make the LHC then it would be to complicated even for Stephen Hawkings to turn on. Or let Nintendo do it and let the whole thing turn into a laser light show set to the Barny's Big Adventure soundtack.

Does anyone else laugh heartily every time they see PS2 with similar sales numbers to PS3? I certainly do and I own the darn things. Now, if only I could find a game worth purchasing on PS3...

I laugh even harder (and to be honest, die a bit inside) when the ps2 outsells the 360.

Pfft, this is whats gonna happen.

Tests tomorrow. Fine. Black holes 0...on this dimension...

By 2012, the black hole they open up on the other dimension will reach here..on 12/21/12 and pretty much what happened in The Mist will happen in The Earth.

I calls it like I sees it....whale biologist.

The fear of "black holes" is misfounded for a few reasons. As stated, the radiation they emit at that size will cause them to evaporate, but also, the black holes we usually think of as all powerful and inescapable are massive well beyond the size(mass) of our solar system. This is just earth here, and before something like that can become devouring and gigantic, it needs to be devouring and gigantic, that's how mass and gravity work.... also, get the facts right, its 17 miles.

ALSO... don't be confused into thinking this is anything completely new, we've been colliding particles here on earth for quite some time, this isn't the first particle accelerator, just the first of its kind, longest track etc. So yes, higher power output, faster collisions...

People shouldn't report about these things if they aren't going to get it right or have no clue what its about and decide to put spin on it, that's just the type of crap that will make people afraid and try to prevent the advance of our understanding.

http://public.web.cern.ch/public/en/LHC/LHC-en.html

-> The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument near Geneva, where it spans the border between Switzerland and France about 100 m underground

He's not between Germany and Switzerland, check your sources !
