Has the Jonathan Blow Statue been erected in his local town square yet?

I cannot comprehend the massive number of handjobs this game gets. Look, he took some time aspects from BLINX and Prince of Persia and shoved in stuff "influenced" by Super Mario Bros. And it does have an interesting (although poorly miked) soundtrack.

It's an okay game for a DL game, it's totally not worth this level of ridiculous worship though.

It is.

And I have a degree in English and Philosophy.

That makes me an expert in this field. Or a loser.

You decide.

"...A lot of people on the Internet were somehow raising a stink while simultaneously demonstrating that they have no idea what they are talking about. So there was a lot of negativity out there (a lot of it on Joystiq), but it was all baseless..."

Not pretentious at all. Blow may be intelligent and may have something different to offer gamers, but that does not change the fact that he has the tact of a walrus out of water. I appreciate being able to experience his unique game, but I felt constantly sneered down upon by the very guy who was supposedly trying to do me a favor by developing God's gift to gamers.

I get what you're saying, but I think a change of perspective might help you a little bit. On one end we have the internet firing squad, and on the other end we have just one guy who spent a large amount of time/money making a game he was hoping some of us might like. Would you rather be him in this situation?

I agree that he'd do best to hold in some of his remarks and give the internet a break considering a lot of us really loved the game. Give the man a break, though, he's new to this sort of thing. :)

Walruses out of water have no tact? That one that comments on here all the time seems nice.

...Wait, a Braid Patch? What would it be fixing? I didn't think the game was broken at all...

About the PSN, he has said often that XBLA exclusivity is NOT indefinite, that once it is up there is a chance of the game seeing a PSN release. And:

"It's the internet, everyone has an opinion about everything. Get over it." --from reading his comments, I think it's pretty safe to say that he's "over it." I don't think he was ever under it, or whatever. Liking or not liking Braid the game doesn't mean you're smart or stupid. But making piddling remarks about Jon Blow the person based on direct responses to questions that people ask him (over and over) seems to reveal a certain sense of being threatened. Somehow, people actually seem to feel threatened by the things he says. I can't think of any other reason for taking potshots at him, or feeling looked down upon, or sneered, or any of the rest of it. And I wonder what it is about what he says that is so threatening. Disagreeing with something someone says is one thing, but getting angry about it is a different beast, and says more about the speaker of the anger than the subject of it.

He is pretentious, but in general, I don't think he is a dick. The fact that he basically doesn't care what you or I think doesn't make him a dick.

The game is a really good piece of work -- though the writing in it is not nearly as rich and wonderful as he seems to think it is. And it is cool that he was able to get it done pretty much on his own, and that XBLA supported him in his efforts.

If the sales numbers rumored are true, it is also cool that he is making a bunch of money off of all that work. Assume it sold over 100,000 copies at $15 and he gets to keep 2/3 of that, he gets a check of $1M. And it's good enough that it will keep selling for a long time. So he should be a happy man.

Saria the Cat: As a representative of the Walrus Out of Water support movement, I am offended by your comparison. Many walruses are quite tactful, even when out of water.

It seems to me the guy says what he thinks and makes sure he explains himself very clearly and straightforwardly. Even when he's writing on a blog. Maybe he's mentally insane?

I find the most polarizing aspect to Blow's post launch attitude is that he's so damned candid. He'll speak his mind on anything really, even sometimes when He should keep it to himself, unfortunately.

As for the Space Giraffe plug, not that it's not worth a look (it didn't twist my knobs) I think that Jeff Minter is a friend of Blow's. Also, Giraffe tanked and Minter really took it to heart: http://stinkygoat.livejournal.com/?skip=100
