A new job listing on the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan website has us intrigued. It asks for someone to "evaluate/assess" a "new games machine," according to Gamespot's translation. The device will be "part of the PlayStation or PSP series and their peripherals." Considering the PS3's 10-year life cycle, we're not expecting its successor any time soon.
As for the PSP, there've been rumors recently regarding a PSP-2 of some description. This could be it, or it could just be yet another iteration of the PSP: an incremental upgrade, the PSP-4000, which could be arriving later this year, if Eurogamer's sources are to be believed. Alternatively, this "new device" could be something completely ... new. The long-rumored PSPhone, perhaps?
Regardless of what it is, it's comforting to know that Sony's got something cooking behind the scenes. We look forward to finding out more, but suspect it may be a while before we do.

As a rabbid fan of Nintendo and Sony who in fact foams at the mouth the instant my consoles are bad mouthed, I dislike PSP in any form. I do however applaud Nintendo DS, sadly I do not "buy into" PSP simply because it is just another portable media player, well invest in something good like a cellphone and quickly you've adopted music playback, video, communication, internet, what more do you want? Well gaming obviously then, well there is no doubt PSP games are simply Playstation stuff shrunken, and where is the fun in that? At least with the DS you get a handful of titles that would never be possible or considered on the Wii or the other consoles because it is simply "unique" and for me, that appeal of such titles continues to draw me to the DS because it will never be something rehashed and you'll always find gems over n over. Word.

If you have to ask then you're not a gamer
BTW, every DS game ever made could be done on other systems like smartphones, PDAs, Tapwave Zodiac, Tablet/UMPCs, even some MP3 players. It's no where near the only device with a touchscreen, not even when it came out.

lol, first and foremost, let me say i was trying to add a bit of sarcasm in my comment so no need to be nippy. In response to Extinction, it is fair to say that touch screen DS could be made on PDA, etc, of course the DS is not a powerhouse or anything and I'm not debating that. It is just that the duel screen added a new dimension of gameplay, and in reality gaming on a PDA etc, was not popular imo until recently with the iphone. So, with that said despite how juggernaut these phones can be etc, it doesn't seem to be worth it because the fanbase wasn;t necessarily there for it, maybe things have changed but ya.. buy whatever your heart contents!

I'm ready for a PSP2.
Hopefully Sony has learned the ins and outs of what makes a hand held popular, and grabs more developer support!

I hope they don't release the new psp for a while now since I just bought a psp 2 days ago (Red God of War edition!!). But that pic up above looks outrageous, I would pay another 200$ for that.

I don't think anything will be dethroning the iPhone anytime soon. And it certainly won't be a PSPhone

I love that "Fan-made" PSP2 mock up. I'll bet my left arm the real PSP2 won't look that sexy.

Not surprised at all, since the PSP is hitting the 5th year from its release, and I doubt Sony is coming up with a iPhone competitor/killer at this stage (I could be wrong); I mean there are small bit news that add up, such as signing a contract with a UK company, doing surveys...
Hopefully, Sony is always reminded of its success of the Walkman and the first two PlayStation's and its failure of Beta-Max/Mini-Disc. I do think this next machine (PSP2 for now?) won't disappoint many Sony fans, but I do wonder what does Sony have to attract new buyers. DSi does have 2 digital cameras + SD card storage space, which can expend portable gameplaying into the unknown territory; and iPhone keeps adding apps and new games by the minute.
I think a sure bet for the PSP2 is plenty of storage space (at least 16GB) with the elimination of the UMD drive + expendable memory space (please use the more common SD cards instead of the memory duo cards!), better connection with the PS3, and with 2nd analog stick/touch screen as an after thought.

I would also like them to ditch the UMD drive but I think they will keep it to keep backwards compatibility with the original PSP, or maybe they won't considering they scrapped backwards compatibility in the new PS3s.
Please let it accept SD cards in addition to memory sticks, a better web browser with more internal memory for other uses as well.
They should embrace the large PSP homebrew community, invite them to create games like on PSN but of course lock out anything piracy friendly. Also release more full games on PSN for digital distribution.

Maybe they can release games on mini blu-ray discs to combat software piracy. As far as I know it's the only medium that hasn't been cracked. That would eliminate piracy.

If Sony doesn't make the PSP2 EXACTLY like that mock-up,... I personally can't do anything, but millions of us will shake our tiny inconsequential fists at Sony.

Next PSP= Buy.
I hope its not like that pic up there tho.
I want it close to the current one(shape), with a sliding screen that has a keyboard under it.

If it is a new PSP, it's too soon for my tastes, especially when you consider how poorly supported the current console has been for the last 12-13 months. R&D should always continue, even in a downturn, but releasing expensive hardware anytime soon would be a tragic mistake.

This article got it all wrong.
Some one translated something and there comes a rumor... This is nothing to do with a new PSP. The Japanese page in question has no such content about a new machine in the first place.
I don't want to say that Sony does not have any plan for one, but this adv was not for any such position. It is a wrong translated interpretation.
