The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that just over half of Xbox Live subscribers have paid Gold accounts as of February 2008. The information comes directly from an Excel workbook from within Microsoft. According to the document, 56 percent of worldwide Xbox Live subscribers paid for Gold accounts, while a full 60 percent of American subscribers did so. As the Post Intelligencer notes, these numbers existed well before the launch of the New Xbox Experience, which ushered in a surge of Xbox Live activity and presumably new members.
Though it would not confirm exact numbers, Microsoft did state that the majority of its 17 million current Xbox Live members do have Gold accounts. Assuming last year's percentage has held steady, that's $50 a year from 9.5 million users. No matter how you slice it, that's a lot of teabagging.

Oh yeah, MS, rape, expensive, don't pay, burn town, loot, plunder.
I would like to stay and hold a debate, but i only have 6 months to enjoy my Gold account. Maybe if i stop living a life full of sin, i might manage to save 50 dollars. Last time i checked i("we") can blow way over that in one night.
"Im telling you bro she wants me, that lap dance meant something, i see it in her eyes.."

Strange.... 60% of Americans are also overweight or obese! Is this a correlation?

Even stranger is the fact that your statement is redundant. In order to be obese you have to be overweight. Actually most of my friends, with a Gold account, are in good shape (14 of my 16 Gold account friends). So while that would be an interesting correlation, I have to declare a miscount!

Well. I guess that proves the strategy, right? Pretty impressive revenue number for a service.

Don't forget. Not all people get a years worth of XBox Live. If you argue that at any time 50% has gold you have to throw in the poor smucks that paid $8 for a month.

I was under the impression that they have been losing gold subscriptions (in Canada at least) because I canceled mine in January (because of school) and they offered me 500 MS points to keep my subscription going (which i turned down).
So far the only frustrating thing has been waiting a week to play the demo of halo wars ... a game I'll never buy ...
I like gaming online, but MS is going to have to find new reasons to pay in order to get me at gold again. for me, on line gaming just isn't enough ... just saying.

Microsoft is genius. Twice I've thought about cancelling my annual xbox live sub, twice have I failed to do so. I just can't be arsed to call somewhere and start spelling my gamertag out for them, doesn't help that I'm not native speaker. Seriously can't they just add a goddamn cancel subscription button somewhere. I remember when I first thought about cancelling and it took me like hour to find out how do I even cancel this shit.

Meanwhile PC gamers are smart enough not to pay extra for the use of their internet...

I hate paying for Gold, but a drop in price would make me hate it a lot less. Amazon recently sold 13 month Gold subscriptions for thirty dollars... I can live with that price, and I hope it becomes the official price point for subscriptions very soon.
