Codemasters' Fuel is big, and while some may argue that size doesn't matter, they're probably just jealous of the open-world racer's immense girth. In fact, the upcoming off-road racing game was recently crowned by Guinness World Records for having the largest playable environment in a console game ever with 5,560 square miles of accessible in-game terrain.
To help us wrap our heads around how big that is, the Codies say that's larger than Hong Kong, Singapore, St Lucia and the Isle of Man put together. Let's just hope developer Asobo (pictured) remembers to fill all that space with enough to do, else it's going to be a very long and boring ride. Are we there yet?

Sound great... but it needs more TDU.
MMO driving is an amazing concept... and I haven't been able to tell if the multiplayer world is going to be nearly as open in Fuel, or if it's going to be 16 players MAX at once.

sometimes I wonder how accurate the comparable measurements of in-game space to real life space are. There are plenty of games where the charachter or vehicle is actually much smaller than the surroundings. I know they're talking about a racing game here, but the last game I noticed this in was Killzone 2. Walk up to any door in that game, and the door handle will be around eye level. Either he's a midget, or something about the game engine requires scales to be off a bit.

I wonder the same thing, basically. How can you measure the virtual environments in games?. Couldn't these people say that each car is 10 miles wide and the game takes place in a giant world and therefore have 500,000 square miles?

This is dumb. I can just make a monster game where my creature has a stride of 1 mile, then make the world 1,000 strides on a side. Bam! 1 million miles area.

As someone mentioned earlier, that's about the size of Connecticut. The hype leading up to this game seemed to suggest a gigantic chunk of the American west to explore and race in. Connecticut is absolutely tiny. Driving across it lengthwise is 110 miles, and 70 miles north-to-south. You're talking maybe a major city and the surrounding area. Maybe 1.75x as much room to deal with as the Capital Wasteland area in Fallout 3. A huge area to walk around in, but not a daunting distance in a fast car, and a drop in the bucket compared to how big the West is.
I hope the area size is some sort of miscalculation, because that's not nearly what I was led to believe the size and scope of the game was.
