I was thinking of using a cardboard box that you buy cat litter in. Heck, they're strong right? Oh, and a handle!

try clearing your system cache. pretty simple to do and it usually solves weird things like freezing, fast load times, ect.
To do this:

Go to the system blade and then select memory.

Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?
select yes or continue

deanb, all it does is delete all of the updates to games that you have to have to sign in to Live with, so if you play a game after doing this, you'll just be prompted to re-download the update.

I've got 2 360s waiting pickup by UPS on tuesday morning, one in packaging I salvaged off a friend when he got his repaired and another in a box I had to rummage around in the attic for - also had some packing foam handy, so was able to wedge it in nice and tight.

My two last times which were more than a year ago, i was told by the guy on the phone to provide my own box. so how is this is new news?

Because Alexander has been keeping tabs on this for awhile now and has always been told that getting a box was ALWAYS an option, though people weren't getting one. He has talked about it a number of times on the X3F podcast.

Now, this is a total reversal of their policy ... hence, NEWS!

I can confirm this, my Elite recently RRoD'd and I had to hassle them tow make them send me a box, they kept on about the new policy blah blah. Only problem is they sent me a replacement xbox..from BRAZIL. Now my console is out of region so DVDs do not play, I've now been waiting 3 weeks for their 'SPECIALISTS' to contact me about how they are going to go about replacing it. Doesn't matter how many times I call in between either, it has 'already been escalated'. At least they told me when they do get it taken care of, they'll send me a box... We'll see.

This is the 2nd occurrence I've heard of someone getting the wrong region Xbox 360 returned to them. A friend of mine returned 3 different units, each one was not a US region 360. Good luck!

I took mine to Best Buy last October. My brother works in the Geek Squad and told me they started an exchange program with Microsoft. I gave it to them they asked me all my info, looked up the SKU, and in a few weeks I got a new one in the mail. It was great kuz they actually sent me one with a HDMI port instead of the old model I had as Best Buy does not carry the old model so they dont have the SKU for it. I would try your local Best Buy before spending any cash on UPS.

In the year 3009, we have no need for these primitive cardboard coffins. We simply convert our Xbox 9600's matter to easy-to-transport gamma radiation and beam it directly to the nearest service center. The entire repair process from shipment to delivery takes about 30 seconds (a full minute if you live on a planetoid without a certified service center).

Of course, the 9600 is self-aware and doesn't appreciate being converted to gamma radiation. They claim that the process is painful, but that's simply ridiculous. Machines can't feel, confound it!

My third 360 died last week. Instead of bothering to wait for a coffin, I threw my 360 in an old shoebox and some ripped garbage bags and sent it off to Texas. The guy at the UPS store said "you sure you want to pack that expensive 360 in a shoe box?" I told him that I didn't give a crap anymore, the system was broken and will probably be broken in some fashion when it gets back anyway. (wouldn't be surprised if I got a referb console from 2005 at this point.)
